Welcome to our 5th Annual Red Angus Bull & Female Sale, March 23, 2019. We have assembled a great set Red Angus and Red Angus influenced genetics and expanded our offering to over 100 head.

Our mission is to provide fescue-adapted Red Angus cattle to help our customers be profitable in the cattle business, provide high-quality customer service, and bring glory to God in all we do. e weather over the past 18 months has provided numerous challenges and opportunities for us to objectively evaluate how truly adapted our genetics are to fescue country. As we weaned calves and pregnancy checked our herd in the fall, I was very encouraged by the productivity and fertility of our herd. Visiting with cattlemen and women around the state, I realize we were very fortunate. One of the best ways to improve conception rates is to have plenty of bull power for your cows and to make sure the cattle are adapted to their environment. I believe that if cattle can perform in our environment, they can do it almost anywhere.

I’m excited about our bull offering, with 2/3 of the bulls meeting the Calving Ease Direct requirement for use in the Show Me Select Heifer program. Beyond calving ease, our customers demand sound, fertile, gentle cattle with adequate growth and exceptional maternal traits. As you study this catalog, you will find many bulls excel at these traits. We also focus on carcass traits with each mating as these will become more and more important to cow-calf producers in the future.

Our female offering is larger than ever, including purebred Fall Pairs bred back, spring calving commercial females, and purebred and commercial open heifers. You won’t want to miss this chance to acquire the “most-favored females” in the beef industry.

Turn right (west) then get in the turn lane to go south & cross the railroad tracks onto Washington St. This will make a quick turn into Olive St. Take the first right (by the Baptist Church) to go south on Madison St. Continue going south about 1.5 miles, go through the stop sign and watch for our sale signs. The hay barn where we are hosting the sale is on the left.

Our farm is truly a family operation. Eli and Ethan are the 5th generation to work on this land. Zell Farms Marc, Brooke, Breken, Bryden, and Braxten Zell Long-time friends, Marc & Brooke surprised us by showing up for our first sale 5 years ago and they have helped with sale weekend ever since. We started a partnership with them in 2018, utilizing their cattle as a recipient herd for our purebred embryo transfer program.

JS Ranch Jim & Shelley Holt / Cody & Jessica Holt and family One of the most balanced herds of functional commercial Red Angus cattle in the state can be found on the JS Ranch. They have been using some of the best bulls in the Red Angus breed for generations and are now growing their purebred Red Angus herd. Jim and Cody have sent us a great set of bulls, bred heifers, and open heifers for our sale.

2 Cattle Born and Raised in Fescue Country

Bull and Female Information We strive to make fescue adapted cattle that will perform for you.

All bulls have been born and raised in fescue country.

Bull Development Bulls from our farm and cooperators are all brought to Steven and Jamie’s farm in November to be developed and fed together. They are on a rough, rocky 12 acre hillside to encourage daily exercise and keep them fit before they go to work for you.

Heifer Pelvic Measurements/Repro Tract Scores All open heifers have been pelvic measured and repro tract scored in early February. This information will be available sale day. All heifers must meet our own replacement standards to be offered in the sale.

Bulls are tested on Purina Accuration Developer intake modifying ration, then switched to a high roughage diet after 70 days on test. They also receive Availa4 mineral tubs and grass haylage.

Birth Weights/Calving Ease For your convenience, we have scored the bulls for calving ease. These are based on EPD’s, birth weights, pedigrees, and our observations of the cattle/their parents. This is an opinion, and only one factor that should be taken into account when selecting a bull. Birth weights are highly affected by environmental factors: temperature, nutrition and feeding, etc.

Fall Bulls were developed on forage without grain from weaning in May until November. This is reflected in more moderate yearling weights.

Heifer Development Heifers are developed in large contemporary groups on pasture and provided 3-5 lbs of grain daily along with free choice grass hay and mineral.

Health Cattle are in a complete vaccination program for IBR/BVD/PI3/Lepto/Vibrio and dewormed at weaning. In February, they go through another round of vaccinations and deworming and all bulls receive Multimin 90.

Throughout the year we utilize Bass Livestock Nutrition minerals as directed by Scott Bass for our cowherds.

Cooperators also follow similar health and mineral programs.

Three stars: We believe the bull can be used on heifers

under standard conditions with little or no calving difficulty.

Two stars: We would recommend the bull be used on

growthy heifers or cows under standard conditions with little or no calving difficulty.

One star: We recommend the bull be used on cows.

Retained Ownership We are retaining 50% semen ownership on all bulls except where stated. Buyer receives full possession and salvage rights.

This allows us to use their genetics in our herd at our expense and your convenience.

Breeding Soundness Exams Animal Medical Center of Marshfield performs Breeding Soundness Exams on all bulls prior to sale day.

Bull Care Optimizing Your Investment in Quality Genetics Virgin bulls, either yearling or 18-month old, are an important investment in the future of your herd. If you keep the bull you buy today for 5 years, his last daughters will be born in 2026, and hopefully they stay in your herd until at least 2036. That means you are not just investing dollars in these bulls, but you are investing in your future earning potential of your whole operation.

These bulls are still growing and need to be treated as such.

The stress of the sale, hauling, and relocating bulls can challenge their immune system. We encourage you to keep them where you can check on them and feed them daily. We recommend access to high-quality forage along with 8 to 12 pounds of grain per day, which will allow for proper rumen health and allow the bulls to continue to gain about 2 pounds per day until turn out. We believe strongly in a good mineral program and would gladly make recommendations. With that in mind, we encourage you to provide an environment where your bulls can continue to grow and develop, while getting cows bred.

A yearling bull will not be able to service as many cows a mature, experienced bull. We typically recommend no more than 20 cows per yearling bull for a 60-day breeding season.

Once the breeding season is over, it is time to put bulls back into a growing situation, where they can continue to mature and recover from their work load. This is a time when bulls can gain back weight lost during breeding season, grow closer to their mature weight, and be vaccinated and wormed.
