Welcome to the annual Croissant Red Angus bull sale. This is the 17th year of holding a bull sale on our ranch, starting with a small private treaty event. We are grateful to the numerous family members and friends that have pitched in over the years to make each one a success. The Croissant Red Angus family has grown and the format of the sale has evolved as we have been able to increase the number of bulls offered for sale, yet our commitment to produce high quality bulls that excel in our environment remains. We hope you find the set of bulls offered this year continues to meet the high genetic & phenotypic standards you are accustomed to.

We are pleased to continue our partnership with Kelly & Kitty Sorensen. This is the third year they have cooperated with us in the bull sale, bringing quality bulls to the program. The commercial heifers this year include sets from three different herds that have used Croissant Red Angus bulls for several years.

At Croissant Red Angus, we strive to provide accurate data to help you make an informed choice for your bull selection. We are committed to using all the tools available, providing our customers with the information needed to make the best selection. We added DNA enhanced EPDs three years ago and began PAP testing all the bulls last year for our high altitude customers. If you have any questions regarding the data provided, please contact us.

Red Angus cattle continue to provide value in the marketplace. There are a variety of value added programs to help the commercial cattle producer market their Red Angus sired calves including FCCP and Top Dollar Angus. All calves sired by Croissant Red Angus bulls qualify for FCCP. Bulls noted with the Top Dollar Angus logo in the catalog qualify for that program.

In addition to viewing the cattle on sale day, you are welcome to come out anytime, just give us a call. A ranch visit prior to sale will allow time for us to visit with you more in-depth about your cowherd goals and pick bulls that will work best in your operation.

We hope you will join us on March 25, 2017. There’ll be plenty of donuts and coffee in the morning as you prepare to view the bulls or look through the data one more time. Lunch will be served starting at 11am and the sale will start at 1 p.m. MDT. DV Auction will broadcast sale as well, allowing those that can’t be here to view the sale and place bids.

It may be hard to imagine a best 1% Calving Ease bull this wide-based and with such a big loin. But, that perfectly describes this Trilogy son out of our “512” donor dam – every calf she has produced has gone into a Seedstock program!

Since his dam was in our ET program he was in a single head contemporary group so his EPDs won’t reflect that his adj ribeye was 20% larger and that his ADG was 10% greater than the average of our 2016 bull crop. Advantage has made quite an impact on the Croissant program – he’s the sire of three of our herd sires, several of our most productive young cows and some standout bulls in this year’s sale. None more so than 05D, whose dam is a halfsister to Mission Statement and #1 Marbling sire, Commitment – so it’s no surprise that 05D dominates quality grade with a 132 IMF ratio and best 1% Marblng EPD. This bull is seven weeks younger than the bulls ahead of him so he had to be pretty unique to be compared to the powerhouse bulls just ahead of him. Truth is he is as strong of an “All-Around” genetic package as you’ll find with best 1% rank for both Red Angus Profitability indices and lowest 9% birthweight to 109 YW and he’s the second best ADG bull in the entire offering. His maternal brother, whom we retained a semen interest in was the high selling bull in our 2015 sale. He has several good sons in the sale. Retaining 1/3 interest.

COMMERCIAL HEIFERS Lots 100 – 101 are on-site, and on the same development program as our replacement heifers. They will have passed a pre-breeding exam, received all vaccinations (respiratory and reproductive), and are ready to breed.

Lot 100 – Lazy H Ranch commercial heifers 13 head of March born heifers will sell as one lot.

We have had the opportunity to sell these heifers for the past few years and once again the Harms family brought a quality set. These are deep-bodied heifers that will be a good addition to your herd to make a positive impact in the beef supply system. We have had the opportunity to feed previous year’s calves; and you or the feedyard you sell to will be happy that you made the investment in these heifers.

COMMERCIAL HEIFERS Lot 102 – Shaw Ranch commercial heifers 40 head of May/June born heifers, selling in “gate-cut” sorts of 10; the winning bidder will have the option of “rolling” subsequent and consecutive 10 head sorts.

If you are a regular at the sale, you have seen the Shaw family make investments in high quality genetics. They have been purchasing top end Croissant Red Angus bulls for 15 years and are a Top Dollar Angus qualified herd. This is the first year the Shaw Ranch has consigned heifers to the sale.

The Shaw heifers will be a great addition to a summer or fall calving program. They bring quality from top to bottom, raised to last in tough range conditions. Their bulls purchased are packed for performance averaging in the top 7th percentile in HB, top 15% in GM, and growth traits in the top 1/3. The bulls add calving ease for the sleep at night program averaging in the top 11%.

SALE TERMS: • Animals are unconditionally guaranteed to be sound breeders for the first breeding season. Bulls are guaranteed to have libido and heifers are guaranteed to cycle. We do not guarantee against injury or illness.

• Each animal will be at the buyer’s risk as soon as sold, but will be cared for by the seller for a reasonable time after the sale. Animals need to be picked up by April 15th.

• The bulls will have passed a Breeding Soundness exam before sale day.

• Free delivery of bulls within Colorado, or within 500 miles. $20,000 or more in purchases qualifies for free delivery in the continental US. Deliveries will be scheduled as soon after the sale as possible. We do not offer free delivery on heifers but will work with the buyer to arrange delivery if needed.

• A $50 credit will be given to purchasers who pick up their bulls by April 15th.

• A $50 credit will be given to purchasers of multiple bulls.

• We will be retaining a 1/3 interest in bulls we designate or wish to collect and use in our herd. They will be noted in this catalog. Semen collection is at buyer’s convenience. Buyer has full possession & full salvage value.

• Registration papers will be transferred to the buyer which provides eligibility for RAAA FCCP. • Announcements from sale block take precedence over printed catalog.

SALE PROCEDURES: • Animals are always available for inspection at the ranch.

• Each animal will sell in catalog order in a video setting, rather than through a sale ring.

OUR GOAL: Produce functional cattle for our short grass semiarid environment and provide honest value and service to our customers.

OUR PROGRAM: Our program is founded on balanced trait selection using proven sires. We put the emphasis on Carcass, Maintenance, and Reproductive traits including low birth weight and do not chase extreme growth. These traits add value through carcass quality, lower maintenance costs, increased longevity of the females, and reduced labor inputs with the added benefit of the accompanying “convenience traits”. We focus on fertile, easy handling females with mothering ability.

DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM: The bulls are developed on the ranch.

After weaning the bulls are grazed out on pasture for a month and then fed a high quality roughage ration with a vitamin-mineral supplement to gain 3.25 lb/day on average. The bulls are kept in a large dry pen, which gives plenty of exercise. We do not target 1,300 or 1,400 lb. yearling weights.

The development program is designed for the bulls to make their own way on the range and hold up to the rigors of their first breeding season.

They are guaranteed breeders & ready to work!

The cattle presented here are out of cows that are bred to work within our limited resources, producing calves that excel at weaning, perform in the feedyard and add value on the rail. We hold our females to a “no excuses” production criteria. If they can’t raise a calf every year in our environment they are culled from the herd.

HEALTH: Bulls have had their branding, preconditioning, and weaning shots of 5 way BRD, Pasteurella, 7-way Somnus, parasite control, and StayBred VL5. Dr. Shoemaker will fertility test all bulls and the results will be provided for each bull sold.

In addition, Dr. Holt will PAP score all bulls for those interested in taking bulls to higher altitude. This information will be available as a sale day supplement. If you have questions regarding this information, please contact Kevin, Larry or Dr. Holt.

Percentile rankings are listed below the EPD table. The measurement data with their in-herd performance ratios are listed in a table just to the right of the pedigree. Scrotal measurements and PAP scores will be on a supplement sheet available sale day and posted on our website as soon as they are completed.
