Welcome to the 25th Annual Sunflower Genetics Production Sale. Hard to believe I have written this welcome for 25 sales. We have been blessed with family, friends, and customers to help us along the path. We have genuinely enjoyed the past 25 years and are really looking forward to the next 25 as our family grows along with Sunflower Genetics.

Wow, what a year. We could talk about all the things in the news, but the most important thing for us, revolves around family and livestock. We had our first wedding this past summer as Joe and Morgan were married.

Maybe not the as big as of a wedding as they wanted, but we sure had a great party afterwards. Who knew a sale barn could be transformed into a wedding venue? The weddings continue this summer as Becky and Pat will tie the knot. Who knows after that?

While there are many changes taking place, some things never change. We continue to strive to produce the best genetics to help you improve your cowherd. We realize our decisions are reflected years down the road and most importantly many years down the road for you. That simple fact compels us to put in endless hours looking for the genetics we use in our cow herd and in turn, yours. The simple truth is, it is a complicated search. Sure, you can simply look at only epds but that is only part of the puzzle. Many of the most important traits cannot be found on paper. While many of the traits found in the epds are of utmost importance, the most important ones such as feet and leg structure, udder quality, maternal instinct, or longevity can only be found through research and lots of time. Naturally, we want it all and feel you deserve it also.

Directions Sunflower Genetics is located south of I-70, west of Topeka and east of Manhattan. Take exit 346 (Carlson Rd) off of I-70 and go south 3.5 miles to 33rd street and go east.

Our goal in developing bulls is to have the bulls grow and express their potential, but not get fat. Ideally, the bulls gain just over 3 pounds a day. This is enough for comparison in the groups, but keeps the bulls from getting too fat. We know the bulls can gain more, but the race to have the biggest yearling weight or highest ADG is not as important as providing you with a bull that will last for many years and be a good investment for your cowherd.

Explanation of Performance Data, EPDs and $Indexes Definition of Terms

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels.

Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on 1st calf heifers.

Carcass Weight (CW): Estimates average differences in carcass weight. Expressed in pounds at a given age endpoint.

Birth Weight (BW): Expressed in pounds and predicts the average difference that can be expected in an animal’s offspring compared to the average.

Yield Grade (YG): Predicts differences in progeny carcass YG scores at 475 days of age.

Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight.

Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight.

Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters.

Milk (MM): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk.

Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth.

Marbling (Marb): Predicts the average difference in USDA Quality Grade in an animal’s progeny, when compared to the progeny of another animal at a given age endpoint.

Back Fat (BF): Expressed in inches of back fat, a predictor in difference in inches of carcass back fat at 475 days of age.

Rib-eye Area (REA): Predicts the average difference in REA in an animal’s progeny, when compared to the progeny of another sire.

Color and Polled Status: Homozygous: Sire all black or polled calves.

Heterozygous: Red calves may be sired by bulls, depending on the genetic color status of the cows.

Actual Birth Weight (Act. BW): Body weight measurement taken at birth.

Weaning Weight Ratio (WWR) & Yearling Weight Ratio (YWR): Weight ratios compare an individual to the rest of his or her contemporary group at a given time. Ratios are expressed as a number with 100 being average. Any animal above 100 performed better than the average calf in their respective contemporary group. ET calves and twins do not ratio for WW or YW. Scrotal Circumference (SC): Scrotal measurements will be made available on sale day.

“K.I.S.S.” - A Word on Selection Indexes Selection Indexes

K.I.S.S (Keep It Simple Silly) K.I.S.S was an acronym I can remember being used growing up. Whether it was basketball coaches or livestock judging coaches it all meant the same. Sometimes we can make things more complicated than they need to be and K.I.S.S. is a good reminder to acknowledge that sometimes a simpler path does exist. Selection indexes do just that. However, they are based on complex calculations that are hard to follow and sometimes make you scratch your head, in the realm of indexes few fully understand the fine details. Nonetheless, the simplicity and impact one selection tool can have on your cow herd is unmatched. Most if not all breeds publish selection indexes, for this sale we will focus on the ones that relate to Angus and Simmental cattle respectfully.

Simmental

$EN–Expressed in dollar savings per cow per year, based on a sires daughters. Takes into account lactation energy requirements and differences in mature cow size. $W—Expressed in dollars per head. The expected average difference in future progeny performance for pre-weaning value. $B—Expressed in dollars per head. Helps explain differences in post-weaning and carcass value compared to calves of other sires.

TI—Evaluates sires use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.

API–Evaluates sires use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.

How do Angus and Simmental Indexes relate to each other?

When we look at selection indexes as they relate to each breed we try to simplify. API and $W are similar to one another. These indexes both focus on important traits that impact the cow herds long term profitability. In contrast TI and $B are similar to each other.

Both favor cattle who’s progeny grow well after weaning and perform on the rail, ignoring maternal value.

What selection index is right for my cow herd?

As with EPDs, an evaluation of your own herd is a good place to start when it comes to determining what index is right for your cow herd. If decisions are based upon the wrong index the results could be catastrophic. For example, if your goal is to build a cowherd anchored by reproductive excellence, longevity, calving ease, moderate cow size and optimum milk production to avoid high feed costs selection emphasis on $B or TI would likely result in a disaster. Same can be said if feedlot performance and retained ownership are goals and selection pressure is placed on $W and API, substantial profits would more than likely be left on the table.

The proper scenario to use TI and/or $B? If you sell all of your calves at weaning or retain ownership through the feeding phase use TI and $B. Rewards from selecting high TI and $B cattle will be evident when the calf crop goes to the rail and your check comes in the mail. These cattle generally speaking are built to run on a race track and in this analogy the pasture is a dirt road and the feedlot is a nascar speedway.

Last fall after countless searches, phone calls and hours studying semen catalogs we were at a loss as to what to breed our heifers to for the next generation. We then realized the solution was right here at home.

SFG Good News G9502 was collected in time to breed heifers and we will have calves this fall. He was a standout admired since birth in the pasture. Sired by Cowboy Logic his looks and performance were bred in and his dam we could write a book about. Longevity is one of the most important traits and 551 definitely exceled. Not only did 551 produce for many years but looked great doing it. We talk about feet, legs, udders, and fleshing ability and she is a prime example. Pictured at 12 years of age she was admired by anyone who appreciated her quality. While Good News is not the big power bull his best trait will be years down the road for his daughters.

This is an easy bull to find because he simply sticks out not just because of his performance but he will probably come up and help you look at the catalog. A big teddy bear that not only will add pounds but make great cows. He combines two of our best cow families into one great genetic package. Looks, performance and cow family equal a win, win option for your next herd bull. We don’t have to discuss his sire much as most of you saw him first hand several years ago as our high selling bull.

To be honest I saw H0154 1st when this pair got off the trailer. I was impressed with his similarity to my first sighting of Cowboy Logic. Solid in every physical trait combined with an eye-catching look that really grabs your attention. Lot 16 doesn’t disappoint you when you look at the paperwork either. H0150 has the look of a calving ease bull in terms of his head shape and smoothness of shoulder. However, as you get to studying him from there back he offeres balance and eye appeal from the side and is very sound and correct on his feet and legs. A WORD ON INDEXES The last few years a considerable amount of interest has been on the indexes. In the case of the Simmental cattle, API and TI are the driving decision maker for many breeders. We are complete believers in data and epds. However, a word of caution about indexes.

The Indexes are generated by a complicated set of assumptions that your situation may or may not have. For example, there are several ways for a bull to have a high API index. He might be a calving ease deluxe bull with great maternal traits which would be great if you’re looking for those traits to breed heifers and keep replacements. Or maybe he gets a high API by being high growth and great carcass traits. The thought is that while these indexes are a great tool, keep in mind what traits are important to you and find bulls that fit in your criteria. Finally, as with any epds, there are extremely important traits that aren’t found on paper that only a critical eye on the cattle can judge.

Bull Development Program Striving to have the bulls grow and express their potential, but not get fat, is our main goal in developing bulls for our customers. We do not want to buy over-fat bulls ourselves and do not feel you do either. Ideally, the bulls gain around 3 pounds a day. This is enough for comparison in the groups, but keeps the bulls from getting too fat. We know the bulls can gain more, but the race to have the biggest yearling weight or highest ADG is not as important as providing you with a bull that will last for many years and be a good investment for your cowherd.

As you have probably noticed, we have not put our weaning and yearling weights in the catalog. Two very simple reasons for doing this: First, raw weights don’t tell the whole story.

How they compare to the contemporary group is what matters. Using a basketball game as an analogy, just because a team scores 80 points doesn’t mean they always win. The formula for winning isn’t just about how many points your team can score, its much more complicated than that. At this point, the deciding factor is how many points the opposing team scored. Contemporary groups work the same way, by answering how a given animal compares to the average of his or her group. Ratios, not the actual weights are used to calculate the EPDs. EPDs themselves are even more important than ratios.

Secondly, environment has a huge influence on a calf’s actual weight.

We know nutrition can push weaning weights up by several hundred pounds. We also know in our operation weaning weights can vary as much as 100 pounds from pasture to pasture. Then to further complicate matters, embryo transplant calves out of donor females are at the mercy of their recipient dam’s ability to raise a calf. Finding the best calves by simply using weights makes it extremely difficult to determine an animals true genetic value. Ratios show how the calf compared to the group and the environment he was raised in.

In the American Simmental Association, our average animal is well above average in almost every EPD trait. In API which is the All Purpose Index, our average animal is in the top 25% of the entire breed. Likewise in TI, which is more of a terminal index, our average animal is in the top 15% of the breed.
