Welcome to our 7th Annual Red Angus Bull and Female Sale!

My son Ethan and I took a road trip to Montana in November to buy some good bred females. It was a great adventure taking a long drive, studying the sale catalog on the way, seeing great friends, and selecting females to bid on. The sale went well for us. Thrilled with the females we purchased, we made a quick stop with a trailer load of Red Angus at Mount Rushmore and home we came. Last night was part of the payoff, as Ethan got to head to the calving pen with his Papa Jim and I to see a JUST born bull calf from one of the Montana heifers. We don’t always get to watch birthing, so it is extra special when we get to do that as a family. It is also pretty special for our son to see to see the results of his purchasing decisions.

I hope that all of our customers create similar memories from their experiences with purchasing and raising cattle from our sale. We strive to offer cattle that are easy-doing and easy to work with. We are excited to welcome you to participate in this year’s sale! We will have a live auction, broadcast on DVAuction. If you are comfortable joining us inperson sale day, please do so! We encourage you to come enjoy our pre-sale meal, look over the bulls and females, and “bid early and often”. We strive to provide a friendly, transparent, low-pressure event and especially enjoy meeting new customers and catching up with repeat customers. We will be playing videos of the cattle during the auction instead of running cattle through the sale ring to reduce stress on cattle and crew.

I encourage you to study the catalog closely as we are very excited about the quality of the cattle and have provided as much information as we can. The artic blast in February set back sale preparations a couple weeks, so we will have ultrasound scan data and updated EPD’s available before the sale. We develop bulls with longevity in mind and feed them to be fit and rugged, not soft and fat.

Bulls are developed on pasture, across the fence from their sisters and we probably sacrifice 50-plus pounds of gain by placing them in an environment where there is always something in the next pasture to distract them from eating.

We are switching our program to fall-calving. This change in management will result in reaching our long-term goal of providing more age-advantage bulls while matching our calving season with our off-farm business schedules. You’ll notice there are several late-December bulls in the offering as we are pushing our cows to breed up on their first cycle post-calving. We are also overstocked and need to trim back cow numbers, so we are offering more purebred females than ever before. The commercial females are from the heart of our replacement pens, not culls. Complete pelvic and tract score data will be available online by March 20th and on sale day.

A Solid Foundation…

Just trying to raise good stock and better people. A friend posted this quote recently and it could accurately describe what we do in our operation and our family. We thought we’d share a little of our legacy with you this year.

We’ve heard several friends say, if you are farming the way your grandad did, are you really farming the way grandad did? In our case, I sure hope we can say “YES.” We sure think Papa Estle Lile would be proud of the innovation we implement in our program. He loved new technology, had a passion for taking care of the land and preserving it for the future generations, and believed in selecting the best bulls he could possibly afford to bring home. He always insisted on seeing their mothers. He said his steers would be his paycheck, but the daughters would be his future cow heard and he had to like the dam of the new herdsire he was purchasing.

We have the sale on the farm he moved his family to in 1955 during a drought.

Estle and Cleva raised 5 kids on the farm, while raising dairy and beef cattle, horses, hogs, sheep, chickens, crops and more. Jim was the 4th of 5 kids and had a passion for farming and entrepreneurship. Jim and his daughter Jamie carried on the tradition of beef cattle and horses and added custom combining and buffalo to the operation for a time.

Steven and his dad Raymond purchased the Harold Henry Red Angus herd in 2003 – just about the time Steven and Jamie started dating. Jim and Jan got married in August 2004 and Steven and Jamie tied the knot in December of that same year. It took a while for us to “get serious” about marketing Red Angus seedstock, but when Steven and Jamie had the chance to move back to southwest Missouri in 2010, that opened the door for us to focus our efforts on building the herd we have today.

The ranch is truly a family affair. Jim’s expertise in caring for the land, maintaining equipment and caring for the cattle is priceless. Jan is a constant help in all aspects of the ranch, especially during calving season. Steven guides genetic selection, marketing and record keeping. Jamie is the true promoter and has an eye for picking great cows. She helps us all communicate and stay focused on what matters. Eli and Ethan, the 5th generation to raise cattle on the Lile Farm, are the best helpers we could ask for and each have developed their own areas of expertise already. Eli can run a backhoe better than his Daddy and Ethan is a whiz at genetics and EPD’s.

When it comes to being innovative like Papa Estle, we often talk about how he would get a kick out of the things we do that weren’t available in his day. We started ShowMe Genetics in 2019, a custom bull semen collection business. Additionally, we host embryo transfer services twice a month here at the sale facility. We believe if Estle was with us today, he would be in the middle of everything on sale day, would be standing beside the embryologist on IVF day asking questions and fascinated by the process, and we hope he would be proud of the herd sires we are selecting and the herd bulls we are raising for YOU! We are passionate about Red Angus. We love the maternal traits, carcass quality, heat tolerance and gentle disposition of this breed. We believe Red Angus is a great part of any cross breeding program and see many of our bulls and females go to commercial herds as our customers utilize the advantages of heterosis.

Steven and Jamie started ShowMe Genetic Services, a custom bull stud, after purchasing a former Genex facility in Strafford, MO. We believe in adding value and creating winning opportunities for our fellow beef producers and that is the heart of ShowMe Genetics. We not only collect and freeze semen for a wide variety of customers, but provide storage, shipping and breeding supplies, as well as work with ReproLogix to provide embryo transfer services. We have started working with our customers to market semen and are excited to expand this service and others.

Bull Information

Bull Care

All bulls meet the requirements of the newly introduced Missouri Red Angus “Fescue Belt Certification” being bred and raised in Missouri by members of the Missouri Red Angus Association. Additionally you will see “badges” by each lot indicating if they will have genomicallyenhanced EPD’s GGP. Several bulls meet the calving-ease EPD requirement to be used as clean-up bulls in the Show-Me Select Heifer program. We encourage customers to use the Red Angus FCCP tgging program and will pay for 25 FCCP tags per bull purchased. Please visit with us about these value-added marketing opportunities for your calves.

Optimizing Your Investment in Quality Genetics

Bull Semen Evaluation All bulls will undergo a bull semen evaluation. If not turning out immediately after the sale, we recommend you retest your bulls.

Health Cattle are in a complete vaccination program for IBR/BVD/PI3/Lepto/Vibrio and dewormed at weaning. In February, they go through another round of vaccinations and all bulls receive Multimin 90.

Heifer Development Heifers are developed in large contemporary groups on pasture and are provided 3-5 lbs of grain daily along with free choice grass hay and mineral. Our cooperators raise their heifers under similar conditions.

If you read about our history earlier in this catalog, you know our Papa Estle believed in buying the best bull out of the best cow to develop his future cow herd. He also believed in caring for that bull to keep him as long as possible. Virgin bulls, either yearling or 18-month old, are an important investment in the future of your herd. If you keep the bull you buy today for 5 years, his last daughters will be born in 2027, and hopefully they stay in your herd until at least 2037. That means you are not just investing dollars in these bulls, but you are investing in the future genetic and earning potential of your whole operation.

These bulls are still growing and need to be treated as such. The stress of the sale, hauling, and relocating bulls can challenge their immune system. We encourage you to keep them where you can check on them and feed them daily. We recommend access to high-quality forage along with 8 to 12 pounds of grain per day, which will allow for proper rumen health and allow the bulls to continue to gain about 2 pounds per day until turn out. We believe strongly in a good mineral program and would gladly make recommendations or share info on what we use. With that in mind, we encourage you to provide an environment where your bulls can continue to grow and develop, while getting cows bred.

A yearling bull will not be able to service as many cows as a mature, experienced bull. We typically recommend no more than 20 cows per yearling bull for a 60-day breeding season. Once the breeding season is over, it is time to put bulls back into a growing situation, where they can continue to mature and recover from their work load. They may need extra care as they grow and lose their baby teeth after their first breeding season. This is a time when bulls can gain back weight lost during breeding season, grow closer to their mature weight, and be vaccinated and wormed.

Heifer Pelvic Measurements and Repro Tract Scores All Open heifers have been pelvic measured and repro tract scored.

This information wil be available sale day. All heifers must meet our own replacement standards to be offered in the sale.

Bulls with this logo qualify for the Missouri ShowMe Select Heifer Program.

These bulls are among the very elite among CalvingEase, Heifer bulls.

Certified to be bred & born in Missouri by Missouri Red Angus Association members.

Fertility Guarantee Based on these suggested Bull Care guidelines, we also recommend that bulls be run in single-sire pastures or in multi-sire pastures (large, not small pens) with only bulls of their own age/experience. We will guarantee bulls to be breeders for one 90-day breeding season if these recommendations are followed. In accordance with the RAAA suggested Terms & Conditions, bulls are considered to be a breeder if they either: A.) Settle one-third or more of the healthy cows he serves.

B.) Is the sire of 20 or more animals. C.) Settles cows by natural service and passes a fertility test made by a competent veterinarian during any six-month period or trial. This guarantee is not an insurance or mortality policy, but a guarantee on functional fertility. It is not a substitute or replacement for poor management. Buyer assumes all risks for injury due to running bulls together or management decisions outside genetic control. For the guarantee to apply, we ask that you contact us as soon as a condition is observed and before the animal is sold. We will work with you to determine whether the animal is returned or sold for slaughter. We will attempt to provide a suitable replacement. If one cannot be provided of equal or greater value, we will issue a sale credit to be used in a future sale for the full purchase price less the salvage value of the animal.

Selecting the Next Addition to Your Herd We hope the following tools and EPD guide will aid you in making selection decisions.

Birth Weights/Calving Ease

Retained Ownership

For your convenience, we have scored the bulls for calving ease. These are based on EPD’s birth weights, pedigrees, and our observations of the cattle/their parents. This is an opinion, and only one factor that should be taken into account when selecting a bull. Birth weights are highly affected by environmental factors: temperature, nutrition, feeding, etc.

HHH Three Stars: We believe the bull can be used on heifers under standard conditions with little or no calving difficulty.

HH Two Stars: We would recommend the bull be used on growthy heifers or cows under standard conditions with little or no calving difficulty.

H One Star: We recommend the bull be used on cows.

We are retaining a 50% semen ownership on all bulls except where stated. Buyers receive full possession and salvage rights. This allows us to use the genetics of the bulls we are offering in our herd at our expense and your convenience. Some bulls may be collected and have a semen bank at ShowMe Genetics prior to sale day. Supplement sheet and information from the block will be stated if new bull owner will receive part of semen bank collected prior to sale day.

Docility Gentle cattle are easier to care for and more fun to own. Our kids farm alongside us and we have zero tolerance for bad dispositions. We have scored each bull throughout their development for docility HHH Three Stars: Gentle, easy through the chute. Dam/sire exhibit similar disposition.

HH Two Stars: Gentle in the pasture, exhibits a larger flight-zone in the working pen. Dam/sire exhibit similar disposition H One Star: Too nervous/flighty. We rarely have cattle in this category.

They are culled and not offered in our sale.

Our program focuses on fescue tolerance, sound feet, quality udders and early hair shedding. Our cowherd is not pampered by any means; they are placed in an environment that requires them to be fertile, easy fleshing and docile. All our cattle are exposed to electric hotwire fencing, ATV’s and kids. All bulls have been born and raised in fescue country. We strive to give you the most up-to-date and valuable information to help you make your selections.

Guide to Indexes & EPDs: ProS Index – ProS stands for Profitability and Sustainability. This new index is an allpurpose index that predicts average economic differences in all segments of the beef supply chain. While we are very excited to have this tool, it is important to realize that ProS takes into account both HerdBuilder and GridMaster. There are several ways an animal can earn a high ProS ranking. Use this as a tool to find cattle that do many things well, but don’t forget to also look at individual EPD traits you need to focus on in your herd.

DMI – Dry Matter Intake predicts differences in daily feed intake as measured in a feedlot during the post-weaning period. While this is a relatively newer and lower accuracy EPD, we select for lower intake cattle that still gain adequately.

HB – HerdBuilder is a maternal selection index that predicts the economic differences of animals for traits that are important from conception through weaning. Recently updated, this is an important tool to use when selecting for cow/calf traits and retaining replacement heifers and marketing all steer calves.

ME – Maintenance Energy predicts the difference in maintenance energy requirements.

GM – GridMaster has also been updated and is a true post-weaning, carcass driven index, predicting the average economic difference of non-replacement calves through the postweaning phase of production. GM places selection pressure on growth, feedyard performance, and carcass traits. Expressed as dollars per head born, GM is calculated based on the scenario that progeny are fed out to slaughter and marketed on a qualitybased carcass grid.

CEM – Calving Ease Maternal predicts differences in the percent of daughters who are able to calve unassisted as 2-year-old heifers. We focus on this trait in tandem with CED and taking pelvic measurements on yearling heifers.

MILK – Milk predicts differences in weaning weight attributed to the milking ability of the animal’s daughters. Too little milk affects weaning weights, too much milk can have a negative impact on fertility and breed back.

HPG – Heifer Pregnancy predicts differences in the percent of daughters who are able to conceive and calve at 2 years of age following exposure to breeding.

STAY – Stayability should predict differences in the ability of an animals’ retained daughters to remain productive in the herd – calve every year – through 6 years of age.

STAY heavily influences both ProS and HerdBuilder Indexes.

CED – Calving Ease Direct predicts differences in the percent of calves born unassisted out of 2 year old dams (Percent/High Value). We recommend selecting for adequate CED without getting too extreme.

MARB – Marbling predicts differences in marbling score – amount of intramuscular fat measured at the 13th rib. We continually focus on this trait.

BW – Birth Weight predicts differences in actual birth weight of progeny. We recommend utilizing CED, as BW is part of the CED calculation.

YG – Yield Grade predicts differences in USDA Yield Grade, which is calculated using CW, REA and Fat.

WW – Weaning Weight predicts differences in 205-day weaning weights.

CW – Carcass Weight predicts differences in actual hot carcass weight.

YW – Yearling Weight predicts differences in 365-day yearling weights. Excessive YW may lead to larger cows than your environment can support.

REA – Ribeye Area predicts differences in square inches of ribeye area measured at the 13th rib.

ADG – Average Daily Gain predicts differences in weight gain between 205 and 365 days of age.

FAT – Fat predicts differences in the depth of backfat measured between the 12th and 13th ribs. While this can impact YG, we prefer cattle that rank lower for this trait as they tend to stay in better flesh and breed back better.
