NUTRITION AND REPRODUCTION The primary goal for cow/calf producers is to obtain a live calf from each cow, every year. Unfortunately most beef cattle operations fail to achieve an annual 100% calving rate. Cows are required to conceive within 83 days after calving to achieve a calving interval of 365 days or less. Many cows may not have even resumed their estrous cycles by this point. Several factors can contribute to delaying the onset of estrous cycles, however, nutrition and nursing are the two critical factors. Since most cows are going to nurse a calf, nutrition becomes the major component that can be managed to enhance reproduction.

Similarly, age and weight are the primary factors that determine when a heifer reaches puberty. Although new data indicates that prior management and genetics may adjust this, a general rule has been that heifers need to reach approximately 65% of their mature weight by the beginning of the breeding season. This requires well-managed nutrition programs to ensure weight targets are met.

There are several complex relationships in the nutrition/reproduction interaction. Energy, protein, minerals and vitamins all play a role. The organs and glands responsible for hormone secretions necessary for reproduction can be affected by nutritional deficiencies.

BODY WEIGHT AND CONDITION: Body condition scoring (BCS) is a reliable method to assess the nutritional status of your cowherd. On the standard 1 to 9 scale, each unit change is associated with approximately 90 pounds of body weight. Live weight at calving itself has no effect on reproductive performance, whereas calving condition score can be a good indicator of how long it will take a cow to return to estrous. When cows are thin at calving or have a BCS of 4 or less, additional energy will likely be required for a reasonable return to estrous. Research has shown that as BCS at calving increases the percent of cows cycling at the onset of the breeding season tends to increase.

PREPARTUM NUTRITION: The general belief is that cows maintained on an increasing plane of nutrition prior to calving usually have a shorter return to estrous as compared to cows which

lose BCS pre-calving. Energy restriction prior to calving results in thin cows at calving, prolonged return to cycling and decreased and delayed pregnancies during the breeding season. While increased nutrient intake after calving may partially overcome some of these effects, it does not completely eliminate the impact of negative nutrition prior to calving. It is clear that poor conception rates during a breeding season may have more to do with nutrition than an A.I. technician, bull, or synchronization program.

ENERGY BALANCE: Insufficient intake of energy, protein, vitamins and micro- and macrominerals have all been associated with suboptimal reproductive performance. Of these, energy balance may have the biggest impact. When considering cows' metabolic priorities, reproduction comes after most other needs such as meeting minimum energy reserves and milk prodution.

MANAGEMENT: Shortly after weaning, beef cows should be in mid-gestation. This is when producers can most easily manipulate diets to either increase or decrease a cow's condition since they require very little to maintain metabolism. If cows are in poor condition there is no better time to adjust feed to increase BCS. 60-90 days before calving, the fetus is growing rapidly and the cow is preparing for lactation. Trying to adjust BCS at this stage requires more feed and often occurs during the worst time in terms of weather and feed quality. The period of greatest nutritional need is from calving to rebreeding. She is required to produce milk, regain weight lost at calving and repair her reproductive tract in order to become pregnant again. At this stage, the cow is consuming as much as she can just to support herself and it is nearly impossible to adjust BCS. The nutrition/reproduction interaction is complex, but is still the most responsible for conception and pregnancy maintenance. Without a full appreciation for the delicate balance between nutrition and reproduction, we may fail to achieve optimal production from our cows.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION LONGRANGE® (eprinomectin) should be given only by subcutaneous injection in front of the shoulder at the recommended dosage level of 1 mg eprinomectin per kg body weight (1 mL per 110 lb body weight).

WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS Withdrawal Periods and Residue Warnings Animals intended for human consumption must not be slaughtered within 48 days of the last treatment.

This drug product is not approved for use in female dairy cattle 20 months of age or older, including dry dairy cows. Use in these cattle may cause drug residues in milk and/or in calves born to these cows.

A withdrawal period has not been established for pre-ruminating calves.

Do not use in calves to be processed for veal.

Animal Safety Warnings and Precautions The product is likely to cause tissue damage at the site of injection, including possible granulomas and necrosis. These reactions have disappeared without treatment. Local tissue reaction may result in trim loss of edible tissue at slaughter.

Observe cattle for injection site reactions. If injection site reactions are suspected, consult your veterinarian. This product is not for intravenous or intramuscular use.

Protect product from light. LONGRANGE® (eprinomectin) has been developed specifically for use in cattle only. This product should not be used in other animal species.

When to Treat Cattle with Grubs LONGRANGE effectively controls all stages of cattle grubs. However, proper timing of treatment is important. For the most effective results, cattle should be treated as soon as possible after the end of the heel fly (warble fly) season.

Environmental Hazards Not for use in cattle managed in feedlots or under intensive rotational grazing because the environmental impact has not been evaluated for these scenarios.

Other Warnings: Underdosing and/or subtherapeutic concentrations of extendedrelease anthelmintic products may encourage the development of parasite resistance. It is recommended that parasite resistance be monitored following the use of any anthelmintic with the use of a fecal egg count reduction test program.

TARGET ANIMAL SAFETY Clinical studies have demonstrated the wide margin of safety of LONGRANGE® (eprinomectin). Overdosing at 3 to 5 times the recommended dose resulted in a statistically significant reduction in average weight gain when compared to the group tested at label dose. Treatment-related lesions observed in most cattle administered the product included swelling, hyperemia, or necrosis in the subcutaneous tissue of the skin. The administration of LONGRANGE at 3 times the recommended therapeutic dose had no adverse reproductive effects on beef cows at all stages of breeding or pregnancy or on their calves.

Not for use in bulls, as reproductive safety testing has not been conducted in males intended for breeding or actively breeding. Not for use in calves less than 3 months of age because safety testing has not been conducted in calves less than 3 months of age.

BULL SELECTION CONSIDERATIONS Selecting your next herd bulls and A.I. sires can be tough decisions. There are several key things to keep in mind. Sire selection may have a greater impact on genetic improvement in cow herds than we realize. Since a bull is likely to produce more progeny in a herd than an individual cow, the sire contributes a larger portion of the genes in the herd.

Therefore, it is important to minimize the risks associated with the contributions of new bulls by considering the goals for your herd and evaluating all of the information available.

Herd Goals: To begin, what are the desired impacts you are seeking with your new bulls? These are likely related to the overall goals you have for your cowherd and your production system and create your starting point. Questions to consider related to your starting point include: What type of cattle do I have?

How does my environment influence my cow type?

What industry segment(s) do I belong to (cow-calf, stocker, feeder, seedstock)?

What are the needs/expectations of my customers?

What impact do my cattle have on different industry segments?

Current herd status for performance and profitability: With a clear understanding of your herd goals, you need to know where you are currently. It is difficult to make improvements on performance and profitability if the current status is not known.

Performance records, herd averages, costs of production and sales records all may need to be considered to understand the current position and set the baseline for determining future gains in performance and/or profitability.

Selection: Once you know your goals and your current status, then you must consider what traits

to emphasize in your bull selection. There are large amounts of predictive information available to consider in selecting animals to match your production and marketing environments - such as actual performance data, EPDs for many traits and genomic data.

It is important to determine the traits of economic importance, meaning; do they contribute to reducing production costs and/or increasing revenues? Additionally, do your selection traits contribute to the success and profitability of your customers?

Keep in mind, the economic relevance of traits may be significantly tied to your production and marketing system.

For example, Calving Ease may have more relevance if you are calving heifers than if you don't.

Carcass traits may have more relevance to the buyer of your cattle if you sell feeders. On the other hand, these same carcass traits may be more relevant to you than early growth if you feed out your cattle.

The Purchase: You have many choices when it comes to buying your next bull(s). One way to consider this is like buying a new car. First, what are the basic features required? These basics include physical and reproductive soundness, acceptable attitude and breed. Then, what are the add-ons that you require and determine an associated value for them.

These can include calving ease and performance traits, carcass traits, color, polled, etc. Finally, who do you want to deal with? Find a genetics provider that exceeds your expectations with not only the selected bulls but with service after the sale.

ESTRUS SYNCHRONIZATION AND A.I.

With the predictability and ease of management of today's synchronization protocols, A.I. is the most practical and cost-effective way to create value in your cow herd. Implemented appropriately - it is possible to get 60% or more of your cows to conceive on the first day of your breeding season. By increasing the average age of your calf crop, this alone will often pay for all costs associated with synchronization and A.I. Then, consider the implications of genetic gain from proven superior sires and the possibility to decrease herd bull needs. Add in the value of extra pounds through added proven performance, more maternal predictability in retained daughters, predictable calving ease, carcass traits, etc. and the incremental value created is substantial. And, while A.I. in most cases does not eliminate the need for bulls, it may mean you need fewer. This can raise the bar on the quality of bulls you can afford - increasing the genetic gains of every calf born.

There are some considerations to ensure success with your synchronization plan.

REPRODUCTIVE RESPONSE:

Pregnancy rates after a 60 day breeding season should be 85 to 90% before considering an intensive synchronization and A.I. program. Lower fertility may indicate that some other aspect of management, such as nutrition or health, is less than optimal and would reduce the success of an A.I. program.

CALVING DISTRIBUTION:

The greater the proportion of cows calving in the first 21 days of the calving season, the better response expected from a synchronization and A.I. program. Although some synchronization protocols can induce estrus and ovulation in some non-cycling cows, those that calved within 30 days of the start of program are unlikely to respond. Using a synchronization protocol every year increases the proportion of cows calving in the first 30 days of the season, and

subsequently increases A.I. pregnancy rates.

COW AGE:

First calf heifers generally take 20 days longer to return to estrous than mature cows.

BODY CONDITION:

Cows need to be in a positive energy balance to resume normal estrous cycles.

Over a range of BCS from 4 to 5.5, data shows an increase of 18% cycling for each unit change in body condition at the beginning of the breeding season. This response likely levels out at BCS greater than 6.5. A target should be to have cows in a BCS of 5 or greater at breeding.

CHARACTERISTICS OF SUCCESSFUL SYNCHRONIZATION PROGRAMS: • Good year-round nutrition program • Mature cows in a BCS of 5 at calving and first-calf heifers BCS-6 • Functional facilities for sorting, administering treatments and A.I. • Skilled help • Good record keeping • Effective vaccination and health program • Attention to details
