Hello from the Nebraska Angus Association office! A new year is upon us, and so far, it's starting off with a bang, with cattle prices slightly higher than last year. As of the latest report for the week ending February 2, 2025, the average live cattle price in Nebraska was around $210.11 per hundredweight (cwt). Prices ranged from $210.00 to $211.00 for live FOB purchases. (Source: https://www.ams.usda.gov/mnreports/ams_2485.pdf) Last year, at this time, the average live cattle price in Nebraska was around $208.00 per hundredweight (cwt), according to the USDA. For members of the Nebraska Angus Association, their production bull sale figures at this time averaged $5,500-$11,000 per head. So far in 2025, the average per bull is trending at $6,500-$12,000 per head. The future of the cattle industry is looking bright, and we hope it continues for all our hard-working Angus breeders.
In January, I attended the National Western Stock Show in Denver. The new complex will be completed in the coming months, so all the cattle events on the hill will move down to the stockyards in 2026. It was really bittersweet to watch the final shows in the Stadium arena. The history, memories, and friends made in that building for all breeders will always be cherished. I am super happy to have been able to experience that part of the National Western Stock Show and see how well Nebraska was represented in the junior and open show. Congratulations to the Nebraska breeders, judges, and anyone who played a part in the final Stadium arena show! Other events I attended were the foundation sale and carload/pen show. Nebraska was very well represented at both of these events and brought home placements. Please check out page 22 for all those placings.
As much anticipation is held for the year regarding cattle prices, so is the Nebraska Angus Association with our events. One event that is being planned is the Nebraska Angus Tour. This year, the tour will head to the beautiful Sandhills of north-central Nebraska from September 21st to 23rd. Headquarters will be in Valentine at the Niobrara Lodge, and the tour will coincide with an annual meeting and banquet that was previously moved last year to this event. A great lineup is being coordinated for the event, starting with a golf tournament and lunch on Sunday, followed by the annual meeting and banquet that evening. The next two days will include several cattle displays and special interest stops, including Niobrara Valley Vineyards, CCS potato farm, and Larson Vet & Embryo Transfer. We want everyone to know that anyone is welcome to attend, so please check out page one of this issue for more details!
Lastly, I want to remind you of the 2025 membership form. This form was mailed out at the end of December and is due May 15th. The information on this membership form is what is used in the annual directory, so please list all the information you would want to see in the directory. For anyone who has not been a member but wants to join, you can find our membership form on our website at www.nebraskaangus.org under the join tab, or simply by reaching out to me! If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask.
Have a great spring, and thank you for your support of the Nebraska Angus Association!
Sincerely,
Margo Lehn

President Speaks
By: Adam Sawyer, NAA President
Dear Fellow Nebraska Angus Breeders,
As we move through another season, we’re seeing continued positive momentum in our industry. Cattle prices remain strong, providing our producers and customers with an excellent opportunity. The bull sales have gotten off to a strong start, with demand for top Angus genetics at an all-time high. It’s clear that the reputation of our breeders and the quality of the cattle produced here in Nebraska continue to drive demand both locally and nationally. It’s a testament to the hard work, dedication, and innovation that each of you put into your operations year after year.
This January, The National Western Stock Show provided another great opportunity to showcase the strength of Nebraska Angus cattle. We were proud to see Nebraska breeders and exhibitors shine at the show. Nebraska had a fantastic presence in the ring and a strong offering in the numerous sales in Denver further solidifying our state as a leader in the Angus industry. The success and recognition our breeders earned at the National Western Stock Show is a true reflection of the high standards we uphold here in Nebraska.
Thankfully, the weather has been favorable for calving so far this season, providing us with optimal conditions for strong, healthy calves. As we continue through this critical time, I want to wish all of you a smooth and safe calving season. I know how much effort and attention goes into every aspect of this process, and I hope you see success with your calving this year.
As we move further into the year, it’s clear that the future is bright for the Nebraska Angus Association. We have vibrant, hard-working members that continue to drive the success of the Angus breed. Thank you for your continued dedication! I look forward to what’s to come this year.
Wishing all of you a safe and prosperous spring, and a successful calving season.

Hello Angus Family,
Show and sale season are upon us – and what a season this brings!
Along with taking on new adventures with new show stock, many are welcoming new members of their herd during calving season. My hope is that you all remember your purpose in being a part of this great family of raising Angus cattle, no matter your level of involvement. What a great season to be in and the Nebraska Angus Auxiliary is happy to support you all along the way!
If you plan to attend the NCC –The Classic later this month, look out for our Nebraska Angus Auxiliary officers. Many will be in attendance to support our breeders, juniors and even exhibit themselves! It’s a great opportunity to network with breeders across the state from all breeds and see great cattle throughout the week and the weekend.
The 2025 Nebraska Angus Queen Loganne Barta and 2025 Nebraska Angus Princess Zoey Malander, represented our state well as they assisted in the ring at the National Western Stock Show in Denver. They will be attending various shows and sales throughout the year to engage with our members and network as well. If you would like them to attend your event or sale – please reach out to Margo or myself!
We are always thankful to meet more women involved in the Angus breed and welcome any new members, now matter your level of involvement. While we strive to find a central location to meet in person, our next meeting will be via Zoom. Our hope is to have an early summer meeting in person with a speaker and activity. We would love for anyone interested to join us at our Zoom meeting on Sunday, February 16, 2025 at 7:00 pm. Join our Facebook group –Nebraska Angus Auxiliary – to get access to the link or email our secretary, Emily Dethlefs, at emily.k.johnson4@gmail.com.
As we move into the Spring season – enjoy all the new beginnings! In your pastures, in the show ring and at your sales. With new beginnings come new opportunities for all. Reach out to new members, your queens, the adult or junior associations and learn how you can support them!
Here’s to new beginnings in 2025!

Loganne Barta
The Nebraska Angus Association would like to introduce our 2025 Miss Nebraska Angus Queen, Loganne Barta. Loganne has lived in Yutan, Nebraska, her entire life. Her family includes her dad, Jeff Barta; mom, Kristan Barta; younger brother, Tucker Barta; and older sister, Brittany Jensen, along with her husband and three kids. When asked what inspired her to become the next Nebraska Angus Queen, she replied, "The very first time I attended a Nebraska Angus show, I saw the current Nebraska Angus Queen and the impact she made on the kids. That really encouraged me to want to give back as well. Plus, I enjoy dressing up sometimes, so that was a fun aspect of trying to be Nebraska Angus Queen too."
Loganne’s path in the Angus business started when she was little. She explained, "It all started on my grandparents' purebred Angus operation in Gordon, Nebraska, where we would always help them with branding, calving, AI-ing, and more. I began showing Angus cattle with a bottle calf from their ranch, and I’ve been showing Angus cattle ever since. Currently, we have a small purebred Angus operation at our place in Yutan as well."
When asked about her favorite part of being Queen so far, Loganne responded, "My favorite part has definitely been interacting with other members of the Angus Association, especially the kids. I love having an mpact on
relationships with people in this great industry."
She also offered advice to any girl looking to become the next Nebraska Angus Queen: "My advice to other girls interested in becoming Nebraska Angus Queen is to give it your all and never give up. The contests have become more competitive as more people want to become Queen, so even if you don’t get the title your first year, don’t give up, and remember that everything goes according to God’s plan."
Loganne has set future goals for herself, including getting as involved as possible in the Angus industry, whether through showing or participating in contests at nationals. As she prepares to go off to college, she hopes to stay as involved as she can. Another goal is to apply for her bronze and silver awards and eventually work her way up to the gold award.
Loganne plans to attend Kansas State University in the fall, majoring in Animal Science to become an embryologist. She intends to stay in the cattle industry, an industry that has had a significant impact on her
Throughout her life, Loganne has been involved in many events. In school, she participated in FFA, volleyball, track, Student Council, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, journalism, and the National Honor Society. She has also been active in her community, serving as President of her 4-H club and attending church every weekend. She said, "In the past few years, I have become really interested in showing livestock, so that is one of the top priorities of my life right now, and I hope it will be in my future as well."
bers' lives, particularly the younger girls who look up to the Angus Queens so much. I can’t wait to get to know Zoey more and more as our reign goes on, and I also can’t wait to build better
If you would like to meet Loganne or have her attend your upcoming production sale, annual events, or just invite her to your place for a visit, please contact the Nebraska Angus Association office!

Zoey Malander
Zoey Malander, the Nebraska Angus Princess for 2025, resides near Belgrade, Nebraska. She has been actively involved with her family at the Malander Family Farm, which includes farming and operating a feedlot. Additionally, she has worked with the Sonderup Angus Ranch near Genoa.
Family is a significant part of Zoey’s life. Her father, Dan, is the hardest-working person she knows, while her mother, Cassie, motivates her to excel in everything she does. Her sister, Lexi, is her biggest cheerleader, and her brothers, Jett and Jake, always manage to make her laugh. Zoey’s grandmother, Lori Wagner, and her late grandfather, Darrell, both served as Presidents of the Nebraska Angus Association. Notably, Lori is honored as the only woman to have held this position. Zoey stated, “My aunt Ashley is a huge help to me and teaches me a lot about the Angus breed. She was a past Angus queen, and I used to wear her crown around when I was younger!”
Zoey's journey with the Angus breed began with a bucket calf, which was an embryo transfer calf, that she turned into her first bred-and-owned show heifer and is now part of the donor pen. Zoey mentioned, “That bucket calf showed me that quality and hard work can get you far!”
As the Nebraska Angus Association Princess, now in its third year, Zoey was asked what motivated her to pursue the title. She replied, “I really want to get more involved in the Angus breed. I’m kind of shy, so I hope this
push myself
to meet more people and make more connections. I believe in the breed for its quality and the people involved.”
So far, Zoey has had the opportunity to assist at the Nebraska Junior Angus Winter Show and the National Western Stock Show. When asked about her favorite part of being Princess, she said, “I really enjoyed going to the National Western Stock Show and helping Miss American Angus Rosalind Kidwell hand out ribbons for the last time in the historic coliseum. I really like history, so I thought it was pretty cool to be there and meet all the other queens and princesses from other states.”
She also offered advice to any girl aspiring to be the next Nebraska Angus Princess: “My parents always tell me, ‘You get out what you put in,’ so by putting in the effort and giving your best, you can achieve a sense of fulfillment and pride, knowing you’ve done everything you can. Enjoy and learn from every experience, from the interview to the speech, and all the smiling pictures. Don’t stress and be confident.”
Zoey's passion for the Angus breed is evident, and she has set goals for herself, including running for the National Junior Angus Association board and aiming to become Miss American Angus someday. If you would like to meet Zoey or invite her to your upcoming production sales, events, or just to visit, please contact the Nebraska Angus Association office.
In terms of involvement, Zoey has participated in 4-H and events and contests with the Nebraska Junior Angus Association and the National Junior Angus Association. Additionally, she has been involved in cross country, track, horse riding, goat showing, and church activities.

Nebraska Angus Association Scholarship Application
Due March 15, 2025
Send to Margo Lehn
PO Box 245, Long Pine, NE 69217
Please return by mail or email to: info@nebraskaangus.org (if sending by email please confirm it is received)
The Nebraska Angus Association annually offers scholarships to Angus youth. This year we are proud to announce that the Nebraska Angus Auxiliary will be partnering with this scholarship again and we will be offering $1,250 in scholarship money. The winners will be announced at the Nebraska Junior Angus State Show. Individuals who have been awarded this scholarship in past years may reapply but no more than $1,000 will be awarded to any one individual.
Applicant must be a Nebraska resident, current member of the Nebraska Junior Angus Association and current junior member of the American Angus Association or, if over 21, a former member of both organizations. Applicant must be a graduating high school senior or undergraduate who will be enrolling in a 2 or 4 year post high school educational program in the coming year. Applicant’s parents must be members of the Nebraska Angus Association.
Angus Foundation scholarship applications open now
Youth can apply for Angus Foundation scholarships until May 1.
Scholarship applications are now available for college students involved with the Angus breed. The Angus Foundation awarded more than $358,000 in scholarships in 2024 alone. The Foundation offers scholarships to undergraduate,
graduate and trade school students each year to help Angus youth achieve their educational goals and offset the rising costs of tuition. Applications are due May 1.
“The Angus Foundation’s scholarship program is one of the most prominent and consistent ways our donors support Angus youth,” said Jaclyn Boester, Angus Foundation executive director. “Our scholarships pave the way for a bright future for our industry by ensuring young people have the opportunity to reach their full potential.”
The Angus Foundation undergraduate and graduate scholarship applications are available to National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) members through their American Angus Association® login, similar to the National Junior Recognition Program Bronze and Silver award applications. The Foundation’s Certified Angus Beef®/National Junior Angus Association and commercial cattlemen scholarships will still be accessed at AngusFoundation.org and submitted through email.
“Angus Foundation scholarships have provided incredible support as I have furthered my education,” said Marcie Harward, National Junior Angus Board Foundation director and past scholarship recipient. “I'm grateful for my involvement in the Angus breed and its investment in the success of juniors like me.”
Since 1998, the Angus Foundation has awarded more than $4.5 million in undergraduate and graduate scholarships. For more information about the Angus Foundation and its scholarship program, visit AngusFoundation.org.
Undergraduate and Graduate Scholarships
Applicants for undergraduate and graduate scholarships must have, at one time, been a member of the NJAA and currently be an active junior, regular or life member of the American Angus Association®. The following documents are required to be considered for a 2024 undergraduate or graduate scholarship: the 2024 scholarship
application; three letters of recommendation; a copy of current high school/college/university transcript; and the applicant’s Association member code.
Access to Application: AAA login (www.angusonline.org/Account/Login), “Programs” tab
Submission: Through AAA login

Certified Angus Beef®/National Junior Angus Association Scholarship
Since 1990, the NJAA has teamed up with Certified Angus Beef® (CAB) to help Angus youth pursue their higher education goals. The selected applicant will receive a $1,500 scholarship. A separate application from the Angus Foundation scholarship application is required for the CAB/NJAA scholarship.
Access to Application: Download application at AngusFoundation.com
Submission: Email to scholarships@angus.org
Deadline: May 1, 2025
Commercial Cattlemen Scholarship
The Angus Foundation will award four $1,500 scholarships to undergraduate students who use Angus genetics in a commercial cattle operation’s breeding program or whose parents use Angus genetics. Emphasis will be placed on applicants’ knowledge of the cattle industry and perspective of the Angus breed. The applicant or their parent/guardian must have transferred or been transferred an Angus registration paper in the last 36 months (on or after May 1, 2021) and must be considered commercial and not seedstock in their operation. The scholarship applies to any field of study.

Submission: Email to scholarships@angus.org
Deadline: May 1, 2025
2025 Auxiliary Scholarships
Available for Junior Angus Members
The American Angus Auxiliary scholarships are presented annually. The total amount awarded will vary. The exact amount of the first, second, third, fourth and fifth place awards given to both male and female qualified applicants will be determined by May 1, 2025. Scholarships may be defined as financial grants for which no equivalent work is required.
Each state is entitled to submit one girl and one boy application for the national scholarships. The two applications must be submitted by the state or regional scholarship chairperson to the American Angus Auxiliary Scholarship Chairperson. If your state does not have an Auxiliary State/Regional Scholarship Chair, a designated representative from the
State/Regional Angus Association, or the State Junior Angus Advisors should submit the completed application. Please contact the American Angus Auxiliary Scholarship Chair with questions.
All scholarship applicants are encouraged to attend the National Junior Angus Show in early July.
The scholarship application is the basis from which the candidates are chosen to compete for Miss American Angus. Each young lady submitting a scholarship application will be required to complete a form declaring her intent to compete/not compete for Miss American Angus if given the opportunity. The five highest placing ladies choosing to compete for Miss American Angus will be announced at the National Junior Show. These ladies will be required to attend the Miss American Angus contest held in November at the Angus Convention. The intent form and additional
information on the role and requirements of Miss American Angus will be mailed to each female applicant AFTER her scholarship application is received. (Please note: choosing not to compete for Miss American Angus does not affect scholarship eligibility.)
The application for the American Angus Auxiliary Scholarships is available online. Interested Junior Angus members may download the application, access directions and general information. Deadline to your state representative (Margo Lehn) for state selection is March 15th. The post-mark for applications from the state contact to the American Angus Auxiliary is May 1. If you have any questions please reach out to the Nebraska Angus Association Office at info@nebraskaangus.org, or American Angus Auxiliary scholarship chairperson Emma Powell at emmacollinsc@gmaill.com.

Addi Crouse, Belgrade
My name is ADDISON CROUSE, I am currently 17 years old and am a senior at Fullerton High School. I have been involved with the Angus breed for my entire life. These past few years my family and I have gotten more involved with the Angus Association. The Angus Breed is something that I hold very close to my heart. This past year I was crowned the Nebraska Angus Queen, where I got to experience so many great opportunities! To say my family and I have had a great run while showing Angus cattle these past few years is an understatement. Some of our greatest accomplishments include, Reserve Supreme Angus Female at the 2025 National Western Stock Show, Supreme Angus Female at the 2023 NILE, Supreme Angus female and 3rd overall female at the 2024 Nebraska State Fair Open Show. Being involved in the Angus Association is one of the greatest experiences I have ever had. This association has opened so many doors for not only me but also my family. After Highschool I plan to attend Kansas State University, where I plan to major in Animal Science and Agricultural Communications.
TUCKER STAGEMEYER has been actively involved in both the state and national Angus associations for 11 years. During his time, he hasn’t missed a junior national since his first in 2014. Over the course of his membership, he’s served in NeJAA officer positions with multiple times as a

director, along with serving as vice president for two years. Growing up on a diversified farm/ranch outside of Page has been a great asset for contests such as being the 2020 Jr. National Quiz Bowl Champion Team, the 2022 Jr. National Champion Intermediate Stockman, and being a part of two CAB Cook-Off Black Kettle winning teams. Not only that but having highlights in individual contests like being a public speaking winner and career development winner has greatly contributed to his success in the future. Tucker is currently a sophomore at Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kansas as a member of their nationally recognized livestock judging team. He currently has a double major in Agribusiness and General Agriculture and plans to transfer after graduation to Kansas State University. There he will major in Ag Economics with a Pre-Law option with intent to attend law school.
Tucker was recently selected to be one of four members for Team USA at the World Angus Forum this April in Brisbane, Australia. He looks forward to this event and hopes his contributions in subjects like livestock judging, equipment operation, and public speaking can help lead USA to the win. Rounding out his career as a junior, he puts most emphasis on one thing- showing Angus Heifers competitively. Tucker is thankful for his success in exhibiting multiple

division champions at the American Royal in Kansas City and Supreme finishes at the Nebraska State Fair throughout the years.
Hello! Im TAYLOR RUGGLES. I am the 18 year old daughter of Jeff and Kelcy Ruggles and am a senior at McCook Senior High School on track to graduate this May. My plans after high school are to attend a junior college and compete on either a ranch horse team or a livestock judging team, and pursue a degree in beef reproduction sciences and animal nutrition.
I was born and raised on a registered angus cow/calf operation in southwest Nebraska and our cowherd has been the center of my world for quite a while now. I became heavily involved in 2018 when I purchased my first heifer and started growing my herd. Along with my involvement at home with the family operation I have worked at Nebraska Bull Service as a lab technician for four years.
I feel blessed to say that I was raised in the agriculture industry but more specifically on a cow/calf operation. The Angus breed has opened so many doors thus far and it continues to shine light on opportunities that I didn't see possible for me. I am so honored to have received this scholarship through the Nebraska Angus Association and can't thank the rest of the association enough for the support of young cattlemen and women like me.
HEIFER RAFFLE
The Nebraska Angus Association offers this scholarship to youth involved with the Angus breed through the contribution of a heifer donated by a current Nebraska Angus Association member. The drawing for the heifer takes place at the annual Nebraska Angus Tour. Raffle tickets are sold with all proceeds going to the scholarship fund. This program was started by George Marcy of Marcy Livestock. He wanted to work with the Nebraska Angus Association to start a program to pay it forward to our younger cattle producers. When he was young he had received a heifer from a raffle like this that helped him start his own herd. That is our hope with this program to help pay it forward to our younger generation.
