Welcome!

Once again, the Chain Ranch family and crew want to thank you for your interest in the Spring Red Dirt Roundup Sale. We have a great lineup of bulls to offer, and the females look exceptional as well. We are also offering the final 50 units of the season from DAMAR Mimi E381. We are extremely excited about our newest “Use Anywhere” herd sire. We feel like he is going to bring change to our program as well as the industry.

Change. This word can strike fear in some, excitement in others and some won’t accept it, but change is unavoidable. This past December, we lost our patriarch, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, boss and friend. Ralph (except at Christmas when he was Grandad) was a very progressive man, even at 91. He didn’t like change, but he accepted it and embraced it. I do think this is one of the reasons for his success. His passing has brought change. Things are different and will never be the way they were with him here, but we are trying to accept and embrace the change as he would have.

In any business, relationship, or just life in general, we must learn we have to change from time to time, and sometimes we are forced to. Make no mistake, things will always change; we just have to learn to accept and adapt.

Change in a breeding program can be a difficult decision, but change is necessary in all breeding programs.

Changing out an old bull for a new one can sometimes be a daunting task. With change comes questions, so please feel free to grab one of us if you need assistance.

It takes a host of people to pull off a sale. We have a crew on the ranch that is second to none; they are like family.

We have been in the registered Red Angus business for 11 years now and have used Red Angus in our commercial herd for more than 25 years. Our primary source of income in the beef business is selling meat on the rail, as well as producing commercial replacement females. This is sometimes a juggling act. Throw in the fact that we also enjoy putting a halter on one from time to time, and the challenge increases tenfold!

We found Damar Mimi E381 in Denver last year. We didn’t purchase him hoping he’d be a successful show bull, but his phenotype combined with his EPD profile was intriguing. E381 has 8 EPD traits in the top 25% of the breed, top 2% Herd Builder and top 11% Gridmaster. We believed this bull had the potential to keep us in business selling beef, plus we liked the way he looked!

A year later E381 has been named Champion Bull at NAILE, Iowa State Fair and Minnesota State Fair; and Champion Red Angus Bull at the National Western Stock Show in Denver. We have limited the amount of semen we are selling from him this spring to 110 units total. These are the last 50 units that will be available from him this season.

I challenge you to find another Red Angus, or any bull for that matter, that has won these titles and still carries the EPDs to work in the commercial world! Get in on the front end. He is going to be a breed changer.

The Right Red 8021F, aka “Cowboy,” was the leadoff bull in the 2019 National Western Stock Show Champion Red Angus Pen of Bulls for BJ Farms. After the pen show, Roger Erickson with Bar E and I decided to partner on Cowboy. Cowboy has 6 EPD traits in the top 35% of the breed and is in the top 10% of the breed for Gridmaster.

This is another bull that potentially will put pounds of beef across the scale while maintaining the show-ring look. We plan on showing him next fall at Oklahoma City and Tulsa.

Selling 1/3 semen interest and 100% walking rights after his show career.

GM ...... GridMaster Index – If you market all of your calf crop and want to increase the value of that calf crop, select a bull with a high GM value to maximize your profit.

CED ..... Calving Ease Direct – Breeding Heifers? Select bulls with a high CED to increase the probability that the heifers will calve unassisted.

BW...... Birth Weight – Predicts differences in birth weight. BW is included in the CED EPD, so simplify your decisions by selecting bulls based on CED instead of BW. WW ..... Weaning Weight and YW ....Y earling Weight – Predicts differences in weight at weaning and yearling. While selection based on these growth measures can increase your payweight, be cautious what the bull’s other EPDs are.

Milk .... Milk – Predicts differences in weaning weight of daughter’s progeny due to milk production.

ME ...... Maintenance Energy – Selecting bulls with a lower ME EPD will decrease the amount of feed his daughters will require to maintain body weight.

HPG..... Heifer Pregnancy – Retaining heifers? Select bulls with a high HPG to increase the percentage of exposures that result in a calving observation.

CEM .... Calving Ease Maternal – Another number to pay attention to if you are retaining heifers. Selecting bulls with a high CEM will increase the probability of those daughters calving unassisted.

STAY.... Stayability – The most important trait if your goal is developing cows that stay productive, thus increasing your profitability. Bulls with a high Stay EPD are expected to sire daughters that remain productive in the herd until at least 6 years of age.

MARB .. Marbling Score – Select bulls with high MARB EPD to increase the number of progeny that grade Choice or Prime.

YG ...... Yield Grade – Marketing calves on a grid? Placing selection pressure on YG EPD will decrease the number of YG discounts on grid-marketed progeny.

CW...... Carcasss Weight – Selecting bulls with a high CW EPD will increase the weight of the hanging carcass, which directly impacts revenue.

REA ..... Rib Eye Area – Need to add muscle? Select bulls with a high REA EPD to increase rib eye area, which favorably increases Yield Grade.

FAT ..... Backfat – Need to reduce waste in carcasses? Select bulls with a low FAT EPD to reduce backfat, which favorably increases Yield Grade.
