Letter from President Happy New Year to all Columbia Sheep Breeders! I am happy to report, 2021 is ending on a very high note!

Registrations are up. Transfers are up. The CSBA has responded to a difficult 2020 in fine fashion. On behalf of the CSBA Board of Directors, I would like to thank our members for their continued support. I wish everyone a prosperous New Year filled with beautiful Columbia lambs!

During the November Board meeting, the annual budget was presented by the Budget and Audit Committee. The budget is one of the most important tasks handled by the Board of Directors. The 2022 budget is meant to be conservative and realistic.

You will notice a shortfall of ($4,137.50).

Is this shortfall likely? No, it is not. I doubt the CSBA will see any negative numbers. Let me explain.

This budget is a conservative fiscal approach to 2022. Income is variable. Income will increase with more registrations and transfers. Income from the NSS Auction varies by year, location, and popularity of items up for sale. Expenses are estimated on the high side. The Junior Association may or may not need additional support.

Currently, their treasury is in good shape. The Promotion-Membership Committee often sees significant changes in anticipated expenses due to changing needs of the CSBA. The starter flock may not need as much help if one flock is awarded instead of two. If you have questions give Charlie or me a call.

When this issue reaches you, most will be in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season and most likely lambing. It can be a crazy time of year, but we hope you are able to take a moment to enjoy the reason for the season and some time with family.

We have been honored to work with all of you this year and take this publication to new heights. It has been great meeting the Columbia sheep breeders and making those new relationships.

Letter from Executive Secretary Happy holidays and best wishes for

the new year! Despite a difficult 2020, the CSBA is bouncing back in 2021. Members are catching up with registrations.

Transfers are brisk. We see new memberships and interest in Columbias.

The numbers are promising for our breed.

In recent months, I worked with four prospects. Isaiah Tsosie, from New Mexico, purchased a set of quality, whitefaced ewes at a Colorado sale barn. He knew nothing about the ewes but connected-the-dots and learned they were Columbias. Using ear tag numbers, Isaiah was able to transfer and register the ewes. At the NAILE, I met Zane Newland from Ohio. Zane is the Ohio Starter Flock recipient. He jumped into Columbias by showing at NAILE. What a great kid! Two other prospects are young producers who see a favorable future in the sheep business. They purchased bred ewes.

The 2022 National Show and Sale will be in Cheyenne. Cheyenne is anxious to host the NSS. The Chamber of Commerce is offering a $10 per person stipend to assist with expenses. I hope you and your family can join us.

Finally, let me say, “Thank you members.” I appreciate the positive, phone conversations that I get from members every week. There is optimism for Columbia sheep. Members appreciate the work done by the Board of Directors. CSBA members are the envy of the purebred sheep world. Other breeders often ask, “How do you do it!” The answer is simple. We have one heck of a “base.”

Join the CSBA in Cheyenne!

Cheyenne is a name that summons images of cowboys, cattle ranches, trains, and the wild, wild, west. Cheyenne, once called the “Magic City of the Plains,” continues to create a magical experience for those who visit. Tourists step back in time when walking the streets of this legendary city.

Self-guided tours take visitors to legendary sites such as the Cheyenne Depot, the historic Governor’s Mansion, the “Big Boots” art tour, the Wrangler Department Store, or the State Capitol Building. For a modern-day experience, discover Cheyenne’s “thirst parlors” by “sipping” along the Craft Beverage Trail with a visit to four breweries and two distilleries.

The city welcomes the CSBA with a warm “howdy!” Bring the family and enjoy all Wyoming has to offer. Come to the National Columbia Show and Sale and pair it with a western vacation.

The Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce is generously offering a $10 stipend for all who attend the NSS. The stipend will defray costs on the building and host barbeque meals. We thank the Chamber for their hospitality.

The eight-foot-tall cowboy boots have been painted by local artists. Each boot depicts the history of Cheyenne and Wyoming. Go on a scavenger hunt and find them all!

NSS Judges Announced

Dave Julius will judge the 2022 Wool Show. Dave is a prominent breeder of Rambouillet and Natural Colored sheep. Dave resides in Box Elder, South Dakota.

Justin Benz will judge the National Open, Natural Colored, Production, and Futurity Comeback shows at the 2022 NSS. Justin’s family is a long-time breeder of Rambouillet sheep in St. Marys, Kansas. Justin is asked to judge many prominent shows each year.

These include state fairs, national breed shows, the All-American Junior Show, and the NAILE Junior and Open Shows.

Hettinger Extension Fall Ram Test RAM TESTS UNDERWAY IN ND AND WY

Eight Columbia sheep producers are measuring ram performance and wool traits by participating in the fall ram tests at Hettinger Research Extension Center or the University of Wyoming Laramie Research and Extension Center.

Both trials run for 140 days. The Hettinger ram test is under the direction of Dr. Christopher Schauer and Dave Pearson. Whit Stewart oversees the Wyoming trial. The trials focus on whitefaced rams. HREC has Columbia, Dorset, Targhee, Gene Link, and Rambouillet rams entered. The Wyoming trial includes Columbia, Targhee, Natural, and Rambouillet rams.

Each trial begins when the rams are sheared and given time to adjust to feed and environmental conditions. After that, rams are weighed six times to measure Dr. Chris Schauer (left) and Dave Pearson growth. Producers receive information are the ram test managers for the HERC. on average daily gain, rib-eye area, and fat thickness. The trial concludes with a final weigh-in, a second shearing, and a wool analysis. The measurable traits provide tangible benchmarks for producers to improve wool clip and pounds of lamb.

Seven Columbia breeders are involved in the 2021 Hettinger Ram Test. They are Don Lawson, ND, Hettinger Research Extension Center, ND, Blackman Columbias, MT, Faith Gasvoda, MT, Doug Hitch, MT, Timber Coulee, MT, and Margaret Eller, MT. Russel and Kathy Bell, WY, are entered in the Laramie trial.

A field day will conclude each ram test. Hettinger’s Field Day and Ram Sale is Saturday, March 13, 2022. Laramie’s Field Day is April 2, 2022.

Zane Van Horsen and Kirsten Holbo will coordinate the 2022 NSS Fleece Sale. The 2021 Fleece Sale was a success with fleeces selling for an average of $65. The Fleece Sale Guidelines give potential participants background in how a fleece sale is handled. The Fleece Sale is optional for Wool Show participants.

If a fleece is consigned, it will be re-evaluated based on its readiness for a handcrafter’s market. The marketing criteria for a handcrafter’s market is different than the criteria used to judge a fleece in a wool show. Fleeces will be sold using a Facebook Live sales platform. Be sure to contact Zane or Kirsten if you are a wool show entrant and wish to consign to the fleece sale.

Fleece Sale Guidelines CSBA FLEECE SALE GUIDELINES

Purpose: The CSBA Fleece Sale is held in conjunction with the CSBA National Show and Sale. The purpose of the sale is to get high quality Columbia wool into the hands of fiber articles and hand spinners in order to increase Columbia wool viability and visibility in hand crafting markets.

Requirements: • Fleece sale consignors must be current CSBA members by the conclusion of NSS consignor check-in, 7-9 pm, June 7, 2022.

• Entries may be submitted by:

-Contacting the Fleece Sale A fleece sale differs from a wool show.

writing by the consignor, to the coordinator of the fleece

sale within one hour upon the conclusion of the evaluation

of all fleeces submitted to the fleece sale.

o A written or personal reply will be provided to the maker

of the dispute if requested.

-Fleece Specifics:

o Staple must be 3 inches or more in length

o Average micron must be between 22.05µ and 30.99µ

o Must be strong without weak or tender areas page 30

o No excessive dirt, kemp, guard hair, evidence of lice,

scurf, second cuts, foreign matter, and/or vegetable matter (VM)

o Expected clean fleece yield must exceed 55%

o Appropriate fleece style for the purpose of a hand crafter

fleece sale.

• If skirtings are included for weight in the wool show, the skirtings will be removed, and the fleece will be reweighed prior to offering the fleece for sale.

-The consignor decides if skirtings, from the wool show, will be

disposed of by the wool sale committee, or if the consignor will

pick up the skirtings at the NSS. If neither are determined, skirtings

will be disposed of. Skirtings must be picked up by the consignor in

a timely manner.

• Skirtings will be disposed of unless requested by the consignor. An informational card will be included with the fleece when offered for µsale.

-The card will include:

o Fleece ID / Name

o Staple length o Weight

o Estimated Yield

o Estimated Micron

o Fleece description comments

o Consignor information • Fleeces, entered in the sale, will be offered for bid online for 24 hours in a CSBA hosted Facebook event. Communication with bidders and successful buyers, regarding a bid or purchase, will be handled by the Fleece Sale Coordinator and Committee • Minimum starting bid will be $50.00

-A consignor may set the starting bid for their fleece(s).

• The CSBA will handle collection of fleece sale money, pay the consignor, and collect an 11% commission from the consignor.

-10% of the commission will go to the CSBA while 1% goes towards

the National Show and Sale activities.

• Private treaty sales shall be handled between the wool show participant and the potential buyer.

• The CSBA will ship fleeces to successful buyers with buyers responsible for postage and related costs.

Montana Columbia sheep producers held their annual show & sale August 28th, 2021, in Lewistown, Montana. Wade Van Every of Sidney was the judge.

Grand Champion ram was consigned by Doug Hitch of Hobson and sold to Mark & Becky Bappe of Riverton, Wyoming for $400.

Reserve Champion ram was consigned by Timber Coulee Columbias of Sunburst, Montana and sold to Jordan Leach of Ledger, Montana for $450.

Grand Champion ewe consigned by Timber Coulee Columbias of Sunburst, Montana and sold to Faith Gasvoda of Big Sandy, Montana for $600.

Reserve Champion ewe consigned by Hart Sheep Company of Great Falls, Montana and sold to Emma Myhre of Custer, Montana for $350.

Hart Sheep Company also had the first and second place ewe lambs. They both went home with Kate Maxwell of Lewistown, Montana for $350 and $300.

Yearling registered ewes averaged $400 and yearling commercial ewes averaged $330.56. The registered ewe lambs averaged $368.75. Volume buyer was Kate Maxwell who bought 13 ewes.

The holidays are a time to make memories around unforgettable meals. Those memories can be more special by serving up American lamb!

The Promotion and Membership Committee is excited to announce we are partnering with Dan Kohler, Senior Culinary Producer for Hallmark Channel’s Home & Family.

Dan has worked with some of the top chefs in the country including Scott Conant, Carla Hall and Buddy Valastro.

Dan is a lover of lamb. He created this recipe with your holiday table in mind. We will continue to have Dan share his culinary expertise in the spring issue of the Speaking of Columbias magazine when he unveils an original recipe for our Easter and Passover menus. Watch for more on the CSBA website and social media.

INGREDIENTS:

2- pounds Lamb Spareribs 2 cups Red Wine ¼ cup Poppy Seeds 2 large Red Onions ½ teaspoon Black Pepper ½ teaspoon Salt Balsamic Vinegar for serving

• Trim ribs of the exterior fat leaving a thin layer

• Pull the translucent skin away from the muscle tissue • Place the lamb in a plastic bag or covered dish for marinating • Combine wine and poppy seeds and pour over the ribs • Allow to marinate several hours up to overnight in a refrigerator • Remove from the refrigerator and allow to warm up to room temperature • Set oven to 250 degrees while lamb reaches room temperature • Slice the onions thinly and scatter on the bottom of a large roasting tray.

• Remove the ribs and sprinkle both sides with salt and pepper • Lay the ribs meat-side down on top of the onions. The bones should curve up.

• Pour the remaining marinade over the ribs.

• Roast for 2.5-3 hours until fork tender.

• Remove the lamb from the oven and increase heat to 500 degrees • Cut the ribs into individual bones and flip over, so the meat is on top.

• When the heat is up, slide the tray back in for 10-15 minutes.

• The ribs should be crackling and crisp • Remove the ribs to a plate and drizzle a touch of balsamic vinegar before serving. page 34

Fall Culling Submitted by Margaret Eller after Review by Brent Roeder

At MT CSBA’s annual show and sale, Brent Roeder, MT Sheep Extension Specialist, discussed decision-making tools to reduce problems during lambing season. Those tools—“mouthing” and “bagging”—assess ewe age and udder condition. Brent illustrated his points using ewes culled from MSU’s Red Bluff flock.

Ewes typically are removed from the flock at 6–7 years of age. Because of that rigorous schedule, none of the demo ewes were toothless “gummers” or “broken mouthed” with missing incisors, but several demonstrated space between and lengthening of teeth, both of which occur with aging. Because ewes must take in forage efficiently to maintain condition and raise lambs, mouthing is an important tool for evaluating ewes.

Udder issues, such as mastitis, are more complex and less easily evaluated. According to 2012 USDA APHIS data, udder-related issues account for 14% of ewes culled each year (https://www.aphis.usda.gov/animal_ health/nahms/sheep/downloads/sheep11/ Sheep11_dr_PartII.pdf).

Studies overseen by Dr. Whit Stewart, WY Sheep Extension Specialist, suggest that over 50% of ewes have sub-clinical mastitis that is diagnosed through microscopic examination of white blood cells in their milk.

Such sub-clinical bacterial infection usually cannot be discerned by palpation, but in the studies it reduced pounds of lamb weaned by 11.4-pounds when compared to healthy ewes (Knuth et. al., Translational Animal Science, Volume 3, Issue Supplement_1, December 2019, Pages 1739–1743), (https://academic.oup.com/tas/article/3/ Supplement_1/1739/5678653).

For most producers, the first sign of mastitis is udder asymmetry, followed by udder heat and ewe depression and lameness. If noted quickly, the condition can be treated with a pain reliever and an antibiotic. At later stages, the ewe should be milked and given udder infusions of antibiotic to try to prevent gangrenous “blue bag.” page 38

Mastitis is most common immediately following weaning. Brent offered the following insights: • Milk production in young ewes peaks three weeks after lambing; milk production in older ewes peaks four weeks after lambing.

• Terramycin crumbles fed prophylactically—starting one week before weaning and continuing for two weeks after weaning—can help protect ewes.

An older ewe that lacks milk in one or both sides of her udder, but is neither depressed nor feverish, may be infected with Ovine Progressive Pneumonia (OPP). Scar tissue from OPP is palpable as a hard core in the affected teat when it is rolled between thumb and index finger.

In addition to discussing conceptual information, Brent provided an opportunity for participants to palpate the following udder problems in Red Bluff’s cull ewes: external cysts, internal cysts—including a case of well-named “gravel bag,” a mastitis-caused “half-bag,” and scar tissue caused by moving through brush.

Shepherd Lost Gordon Darlinton, 86, of Bozeman, Montana, passed away Monday, November 15, at Hillcrest Senior Living in Bozeman.

Gordon was an iconic figure in the Columbia Sheep Breeders Association. He showed the National Champion Ewe in 1978, served on the Board of Directors, and was Board Chair in 1987 and 1988.

Gordon grew up on the Darlinton Ranch near Three Forks, Montana. Gordon and Marilyn were married in 1957.

They continued ranching and raised three children on the ranch. They moved to Bozeman in 2018. Gordon is survived by his wife, Marilyn; children, Norman (Eileen) Darlinton of Three Forks, Steve (Belinda) Darlinton of Great Falls, Diana (Mike) Aughney of Henderson, Nevada, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

2022 is Just Around the Corner A Reflection by Steve Hampson

Perhaps, you noticed me wandering around the barns at the National Show and Sale in Sidney. I tried to visit with everyone at the NSS. I had great conversations about many topics. I took a lot of notes in my red notebook. When I looked through my notes after the NSS, one topic stood out to me.

The topic was data collection, data analysis, and record keeping.

Data collection and data analysis has been discussed quite a bit in the past year. As I just mentioned, I learned you had a lot say to at the NSS. You made it clear that record-keeping is a personal preference.

Every Columbia breeder makes different management decisions. Each of us market’s differently because of our location and the wants and needs of our buyers. Each of us has different benchmarks for performance in our flock.

One thing, however, stood out from my conversations. You want something that is user and barn friendly. You want something you can use on your phone. You want something that produces YOUR results. Those responses led me to a google search so all of us can consider record keeping our friend, rather than foe, in 2022. And, yes, a new record keeping year is just around the corner.

I, also, sought out the advice of Zane Van Horsen. She is one of our largest flock owners (multiple breeds) and a newcomer to Columbias. Zane is one of those young “techies.” She gave me excellent advice. Here are a few recommendations if you are looking to move toward a more databased decision-making system in 2022.

FlockFiler (Pro & Lite)

• Has a one-time set up/purchase fee.

• $ but it is a onetime set up/purchase fee.

• A downside, it’s not available on mobile.

• Does not require internet after initial download.

• Lots of data points.

Livestocked

• Mobile app and online.

• Works offline.

• Subscription for rates various flock numbers.

• Easy to link pedigrees and progeny.

Herdboss

• This is what I use. It is user friendly— something I really like.

• Straightforward and good for general record keeping.

• Free if you have less than 25 head, $5 a month if you have more.

• Great website for instruction.

Shearwell Data

• From the UK. Dan Persons, from Minnesota, is the US contact.

• Very accurate • Reads EID tags and can sort records.

• Great for larger operations keeping a lot of data. (On Zane’s Xmas list.)

• Can scan ear tags under any situation.

• May be considered expensive.

Finally, let me comment on NSIP. We are all familiar with NSIP, the National Sheep Improvement Program. It is the industry’s go-to for data collection and analysis. Some of our producers take part in NSIP. Their annual sale in Spencer, Iowa, results in high prices for rams and ewes because of data. The August 2021 issue of the ASI magazine was dedicated to databased technology. There is a strong push to bring the sheep industry up to speed with the other meat industries. Hogs use PigCHAMP. Dairy uses the DHIA, Dairy Herd Improvement Association. The beef business uses EBVs, estimated breeding values, and EPDs, expected progeny differences.
