Data In equals Data Out The Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding (CDCB) had a glitch in their 4/22 release. Only evaluations for the Holstein breed were affected. For non-Holstein animals, producers, animal owners and breed associations can advance with confidence in use of the April 5 evaluations. However, official NAAB active (A), foreign (F) & genomic (G) status updates for all breeds were re-released simultaneously for all breeds on Thursday, April 14.

Post analysis could be over analysis, but this is what some of the

numbers look like. There are 109 available A.I. sires on the 4/22 list. They are sired by 68 different bulls. Of the bulls listed, 43 of these or 39% have daughter proofs, meaning 66 are unproven young sires. For those who want more information on just proven bulls, you may go to the Brown Swiss website: brownswissusa.com. When there, click on View Genetic Evaluations Page. Then select, Top 500 PPR Proven Bulls. For a Complete List including young non-A.I. bulls, select Top 500 PPR Complete Bulls List.

GENOMIC ROUND TABLE: A Perspective on the Advantage of Genomic Testing from Brown Swiss Breeders

Tell me about your farm and your herd…

Kylie Quesnel Chittenden, Richville Farms: We have 1000 cows (130 of them are Brown Swiss) and 800 heifers located in Vermont. Our farm name is Richville Farms, and our prefix is Perry Brook. We have had All-American nominations in the past; but more recently, we have had some high PPR heifers. Perry Brook Myra Gret, and Perry Brook Lucky Chance India, and Perry Brook Lucky Chance Kim are some of them.

These families have bulls going to stud this summer. We are really proud to be the home of the #1 PPR heifer and #1 PPR bull from the April 2022 proof run. We took a break from showing while we had three children, Tenley 10, Sutton 8, and Ellis 5. We are fortunate to have my brother Jed working on the farm heading up the outside crew and an incredible staff to keep progress moving on the farm. We also have an on-farm IVF center through Boviteq where we flush cows and heifers every few weeks.

Tanner Mashek, Hilltop Acres: Hilltop Acres is home of 420 registered Brown Swiss located in Northeast Iowa. I, along with my parents Dennis and Barb, and my brother Josh, own and operate Hilltop Acres along with four full-time employees and three part-time employees. We currently run around 1,000 acres of land consisting of corn and alfalfa.

I am the herdsman at the farm in charge of all the animals, plus I manage our whole genetic/genomic program. My mom, Barb, feeds the baby calves plus does the bookkeeping for the farm, and my dad is the “General Manager” of Hilltop Acres. He does the TMR mixing almost every morning, then helps where needed after that with overviewing the whole operation. My Brother, Josh, is the mechanic and crop manager of the farm. Ever since genomics came out in the later 2000’s, we have been very aggressive from the start. We currently have a lot of heifers, bulls, and cows that rank in the top 100 of the breed from many different cow families. Embryo work is currently being done every other week, mostly IVF. I will do some conventional flushing on my younger donors that range from 8-12 months old.

Matt Hendel, Hendel Farms: Hendel Farms was established in 1869 by our great grandfather, Nicholas. The farm, located in Minnesota, consists of about 1000 acres with 30 registered Brown Swiss cows and 370 registered Holsteins. The Brown Swiss herd was started in 1922 so it is our one-hundredth year of registered Brown Swiss. All of these females trace back to the first bred heifers my grandfather bought in 1922.

The cattle are registered under the HF prefix. My brother Karl works on the farm. I’m married to Pam and our daughter Lauren works for New Generation Genetics.

Why did you start genomic testing your cows, and what value does it bring to your farm and the breed?

Kylie: We started testing the Holstein and Brown Swiss herd casually six years ago. We were given 20 free tests as a promotion, so we tried out a few. We were looking at the time for a baseline on our Holstein herd. I was also pleased to see our accuracy on parentage. With many employees I wondered about that. We have been testing all Brown Swiss now for three years and all animals in the herd since last summer.

Tanner: We started genomic testing when genomic testing was first introduced into the Brown Swiss breed in the later 2000’s. We started at that time genomic testing about 40-50% of the heifers. Today, we are genomic testing around 95% of all females born on the farm, plus any males that could have AI potential. Genomics bring big value to our farm when it comes to making mating decisions.

Matt: We were testing some of our Holsteins for genomics when it was first introduced. This increased the value of many animals a lot. As the Brown Swiss tests became available, we started testing some of the higher index ones. Throughout the years, we’ve had a number of higherranking index Brown Swiss and wanted to try to expand on marketing opportunities. www. brownswissusa.com

How are you currently using the data?

Kylie: We are using the data as a tool when we mate animals. We pay particular attention to udder, components and DPR. We have doubled down our focus on DPR since 2016 when it felt like we sold too many incredible cows that we just couldn’t get to settle. We also are using it to rank the quality of our genetics and using more angus and sexed semen than we used to. We are identifying families that transmit with the results that we are getting and focusing on some key families in our herd to advance our breeding program. We are culling calves from our Holstein herd who have lower net merit. We figure it costs the same amount to raise a good one as a bad one, and we are focused on raising the bar on our whole herd (both breeds).

Tanner: I am using the genomic data the most when it comes to mating decisions. When mating each animal, I will pull up their current genomics and see where their improvement needs to be made. I put a lot of focus into milk, components, DPR, UDC, and PTAT. My main goal is always to try and breed for the “complete cow.” I like the smaller, functional type cow, with good feet and legs to go with a welded-on udder. While trying to fix flaws on one’s genomics, we have learned over the years too, that you still have to try and improve their positive traits also, to keep improving the next generation’s genomic numbers. Just picking a bull to fix a couple bad genomic traits can decrease the positive numbers also. It’s definitely not the easiest job in the world to make mating decisions. Another area I use genomics is selecting recipients for embryos. Lower genomic heifers will usually get an embryo implanted in them instead of AI. Matt: We are currently testing all of our Brown Swiss females and higher parent-average males. We use this data to determine if any recessives are present and to try to multiply the best PPR individuals through embryo transfer. Some top males are sold to AI and in the case of females to AI or other breeders. It also enhances export marketing as buyers have confidence in higher genomic-tested females.

What surprise benefits have you seen since you began testing and what has been difficult?

Kylie: We have been really surprised at our impact on our DPR baseline since we started. By eliminating bulls in our program that are negative and paying attention to the numbers on the females, we have a better handle on our whole herd reproduction. I firmly believe that we can improve our repro through this tool. We have also used our genomic data to look for the haplotypes in our cattle. One of the more difficult things is getting the data organized between the DHIA, CDCB and the association. The identification that you send in on those samples must match; and in the beginning, we were sending the samples in with an 840 number but registering with a Brown Swiss number. It took some extra steps to connect it all. It seems to be more streamlined now that we are using 840 numbers for everything.

With our donors, we have learned to always test them. I know in the breed that isn’t publicized well, but it’s really important that you test them so all offspring can be registered. We missed a donor and had to start with genetic recovery to register offspring of hers that were from a flush.

Tanner: I have been very happy with the DPR and milk progress that we have made. We don’t use many bulls in our mating programs that are minus on DPR or lower than +400 of milk. One thing I really like with genomic testing also is that it is confirming the parentage on the animals too. It really surprised us when we first started genomic testing that we were wrong on more sires than we thought. By genomic testing them, I know exactly who the dam and sire are. The only problem that I had was I used to register all the animals before they were genomic tested; whenever there was a sire or dam error, edits had to be made at the Brown Swiss Association before genomics were released. To solve that problem, everything I do now gets genomic tested before they get registered. I use 840 RFID tags to get all animals genomic tested first, then when I have parentage confirmed, then I register calves after that.

has really increased our ability to make progress in many important traits.

For example, a trait like DPR just by getting rid of the negatives that really are detrimental to the breed, you can make huge progress in the trait. By having the young sires tested, we reduce the impact of negative bulls that produce unprofitable animals.

How do you think genomics will influence your farm and the breed down the road?

Kylie: We do a lot of flush work here (specifically In Vitro Fertilization) and we are trying to replicate the type of cattle that are pleasing to the eye and profitable and eliminate the cattle that don’t have the health traits or repro traits to make it in our herd. We are focusing on the genetics of our youngest animals and are really hopeful to see the breeds PPR and Net Merit numbers increasing all the time. So many Swiss don’t make the show ring and we are trying to make sure if they have a spot in our barn they are carrying their weight, so to speak. We love pretty cows too and as our kids are getting into showing we will focus on that a little more as well, but our primary goal is creating greater profit in the Brown Swiss cow.

Tanner: With genomic testing 95% of the females on the farm, we can make decisions on which animals to use as recipients and which ones to breed AI. While breeding back the best to sexed semen and using the bottom genomic animals for recipients, we are able to make the next generations out of the top end of the herd. Also, with doing a lot of embryo work, we are creating more high genetic animals to keep increasing the genetic baseline of the herd. I think genomics will help the future of the Brown Swiss breed because of the DPR issue in Swiss. I feel the breed has made progress on DPR, but I still feel there is a lot of work to do yet. We have to focus on fixing the negative trait of DPR, but not hurt the positive traits of the breed also.

Matt: Genomic progress will continue down the road as we keep eliminating the bad strains of the population. The only negatives that could crop up are not identifying some outcross bulls that could potentially interact with the population on a positive way, but genomics is based on historical data and its performance. That being said, we are currently experiencing great advancement in our ability to select the next generation.

How do you see the value of genomic animals changing in the sale ring?

Kylie: Our breed is where the Holsteins were a few years ago. We are learning about how this tool can help the breed and how to value it in the sale ring. Other herds like mine are seeing the value to these higher genomic animals, and the studs are helping us to figure this out as well. There is a demand for these animals and today they are still few and far between. As more producers test and we see them highlighted in the Brown Swiss Bulletin and sales, we will have a greater idea of their value. Last year, the high seller at the Eastern Breeders sale was a high genomic heifer. This tells me there is a strong future for this caliber of animals also!

Tanner: I think the future value of genomic animals will be increasing. With more people starting to genomic test and seeing the positives to it, I think it will start creating more interest in buyers. If we want to grow the Swiss breed as a whole, we will need to keep more and more people genomic testing to have a larger database for the breed.

Matt: I think that some of the lines that are from families that produce really good individuals will become more profitable in the sale ring. Many families that have higher genetic abilities have increased in value already.

As the world population sees the benefits of genomics, it can only increase the value.

How can the breed support this more production-based aspect to the national herd?

Kylie: It comes with developing programs that recognize this type of genetic improvement in our breed. As we promote and encourage more people to test their youngstock, we can focus on more of the breeds weak(Cont.)

ness and increase our strengths in a scientific way. Recognizing these high animals for their merits in our breed will encourage producers to look for these animals in their herds. It is possible that we need to amend the BSA program to encourage or incentivize producers to take the ear punches.

The data received benefits all Brown Swiss breeders.

Tanner: I think it’s by finding ways to recognize the progress the breed has made. By encouraging more people to genomic test, it will help tell the positives of the breed. As a breed, we need to be focusing on both the show side and the genomic side. There is a lot of recognition for the All-American and show-winning animals, but does the genomic side of the breed get the same recognition as the show side? As a breed, we need both kinds of people, the show end and the commercial end, but we need to work together to make the breed even better.

Matt: To make the Brown Swiss a more popular breed, it has to compete strongly with other breeds. So you have to compare production and what progress other breeds are making in production. More focus needs to be put on the traits that add value to the breed to make it more interesting to people in the United States and around the world. The world population of Brown Swiss is very large, and I think there is a lot of potential with A2/A2 milk and BB kappa casein.

How do you think furthering genomics will benefit the US Brown Swiss potential genetic exports with foreign countries like Europe and others?

Kylie: Genomics is a common language. We can evaluate our genetic choices from overseas by comparing the genomics in our US system.

This tool can help us to evaluate genetic diversity and how it fits in our

herds the same way farmers in Europe and abroad will look at our genetics. There are a lot of Brown Swiss beyond the US borders, and the US Brown Swiss genetics are sought after. We have an opportunity to push the ceilings on our breed and make what the industry is looking for: high production, longevity, sound reproduction with great mobility and high components.

Tanner: By furthering genomics, we can create more new cow families for the breed. Some cow families may be higher in other countries than the USA, or it can be the opposite way too. Creating new cow families in the USA that rank high in other countries gives new bloodlines to people all around the world. The only way that will happen is getting more people to genomic test! I hear people say we need more new cow families, but until more people start genomic testing, we won’t be able to create more genomic families. The foreign market is a very important part for the Brown Swiss breed in the USA. A lot of foreign countries like the high genomic numbers, but they are way pickier on PTAT to go with the numbers (which I’m happy with). I am not a fan of bulls that rank on the top lists that are negative for PTAT and UDC. The high NM$ numbers are good for the breed, but we also don’t want to go backwards on PTAT and UDC. We all want pretty cows that are high producers no matter where you live around the world!

Matt: If you compare the genetic list from around the world, the US population has a great advantage in production, health traits, and type combined to make a great total performance animal. Some countries have a higher type average. Some countries excel the US in production transmitting ability. We need to use genomics to keep our position as a great total performance genetic pool. This will continue to add value to our Brown Swiss domestically and internationally.

The Brown Swiss Bulletin Celebrates Its 100th Anniversary Late 1940’s to 1960 In 1947, Bernard Baruch coins the term “Cold War” to describe the relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union.

The sale averaged $2,366 on 37 lots and becomes the highest-averaging auction sale in the history of the Brown Swiss breed to date.

From 1947 through 1960 the Bulletin averaged over 100 pages per issue each year.

Reports are broadcast that an Unidentified Flying Object or UFO crash landed in Roswell, New Mexico, in what became known as the Roswell UFO incident. Captain Chuck Yeager of the U.S. Air Force flies a Bell X-1 rocket-powered experimental aircraft, the ‘Glamorous Glennis’, faster than the speed of sound. Jackie Robinson becomes the first black American to play in the Majors and is voted Rookie of the Year.

In July 1947, George Opperman becomes Editor of the Bulletin.

Reported in the Bulletin, during the 67th Annual Meeting, November 1947, the first Ira Inman Trophies were awarded. The recipients were the John Ingold Estate, Monroe, WI, winning the HIR Trophy and Lee’s Hill Farm, Morristown, NJ, received the ROP and Premier Breeder awards. The awards were three 14” silver bowls.

Early in 1948, the Bulletin reports research by Earl Weaver, Dairy Dept. Head at Michigan State College, verifies that Brown Swiss have an extended gestation period of 291 days compared to the generallyaccepted 283-day length of other dairy breeds.

The Bulletin informed readers that in August 1950, Blue’s Beauty R’s Babe 141803 becomes the top milk-producing Swiss with 30,465 lbs. milk and replaces Illini Nellie as milk champion. She is owned by J. Franklin Michels of Greenhills Swiss Farm, Greenhills, Ohio.

Eisenhower

June 22, 1955, President of the United States, Dwight D. Eisenhower, became the owner of his first registered Brown Swiss animal. Brown Swiss President Allen C. Alfred presented the President with the animal Mansinolass of Ethan Allen 278469 at the Vermont Dairy Festival.

Secretary Idtse then presented President Eisenhower with an Honorary Lifetime Membership to the Brown Swiss Association. The August 1955 Bulletin cover shows a photo of this presentation.

The National Bell Ringer Program began in 1957 and was similar to the All American Programs of other breeds. Beginning in 1970, the program was restricted to Juniors and became one of the first national junior programs.

While milk and fat lactation records were being broken, one cow, Lady’s Gypsy Girl F 86633, just kept pouring out the milk and butterfat.

In May 1958, “Gypsy” was creating her own record as Top Lifetime Fat Producer over all breeds. She had accumulated at that time 265,393 lbs. milk and 11,343 lbs. fat. She graced the cover of the May 1958 Bulletin.

Icon Holstein Dairy

The Icon Holstein Dairy was founded by Aric De Jager in 2016. It started on a rented farm with a double-8 that was quickly purchased and expanded to a 30-stall Lely Box Robot barn what was completed in 2019. Aric was born in California with rich history in the dairy business on both sides of the family. His two brothers milk 3500 and 4500 cows in California and Colorado, respectively. Icon milks 2000 cows and has one of the best performing herds in the state.

Hirsch Dairy was originally started in 1984 by Jake Hirsch. He started out with a couple hundred head and milking out of a leased barn in Loveland. Jake then built the current dairy in Eaton, Colorado from the ground up. The first cows were milked in October 1994. Today, Hirsch Dairy milks 950 head with around 1100 head of heifers. The dairy contains almost 95 percent Holstein with a couple of Brown Swiss, Crossbreds, and Jerseys.

Historical Society Museum

With the World Conference being held October 1-5 in Madison, Wisconsin, the US National Association and the Brown Swiss Historical Society invite all attendees to visit the National Office in Beloit, Wisconsin. Beloit is just 50 miles south of Madison. The Historical Society Museum is located within the National Office building located at 800 Pleasant Street. Whether a visit is possible or not, the next few Visiting the Past articles will take you on a tour through the Museum.

As you enter the building, to the right you are greeted by the large 4 by 6-foot portrait of Jane of Vernon. The memorial picture was presented to the Association on November 10, 1955, and has graced that wall ever since.

The building which houses both the Association Offices, and the Historical Society Museum has a history of its own.

Hello All: I am so excited about the National Brown Swiss Convention in Loveland, Colorado. I have just booked my flight and it is all becoming real that my time is about up as the National Brown Swiss Ambassador! I have had such a great time traveling and meeting so many juniors across the country. I am so thankful for the connections I have made and all of the networking I have done over the past year! Dalton Freeman: Hello, I am Dalton Freeman, I am 20 years old and a pro cattle fitter. I have grown up in the dairy industry and have been around it my whole life. I grew up on a small farm in northern Indiana. My farm exhibits Brown Swiss and other breeds at local, state, and national levels. I enjoy the Brown Swiss industry because of the people. I have met so many people across the globe thanks to the Brown Swiss industry.

It gives you the opportunities to talk to and connect with people from different parts of the world. In addition, the Brown Swiss industry and its network have helped me learn new things.

Don’t forget to register for the 2022 National Brown Swiss Convention in Loveland, Colorado. During the convention, there will be several exciting youth activities such a Junior Welcome Event at the Summit, a dairy judging clinic, a dairy bowl, and a social event. At the Summit, there will be bowling and arcade games. This welcome event will be a lot of fun and allow youth members to get to know other youth from across the country. At the dairy judging clinic youth members will have the opportunity to learn more about the basics of judging cattle and giving reasons. The dairy bowl will allow youth members to test their knowledge of the dairy industry and Brown Swiss.

At the social event, there will be yard games and more time to get to know other youth members. Additionally, there will be a national heifer show and showmanship at the convention. I highly encourage all National Brown Swiss Youth to attend this year’s National Brown Swiss Convention! I hope to see you all there!

For youth members showing at the convention heifer show, there will be another youth show nearby in Colorado. The Colorado Dairy Youth Extravaganza will be June 12th through June 14th, following the convention. SALES Stars of Twinkle-Hill Celebration Sale Fond du Lac, Wisconsin / March 25, 2022 109 Lots Average $2507 Owners, John and Dee Winkelman have decided it is time to slow down just a little bit. Along with family members, Jeannie & Mike, Gracelyn & Garrett Bishop & Laurie Winkelman, the date was set and the best of Twinkle-Hill was offered to the public. The Celebration Sale was held at the Great Northern Sale Arena with a full house in attendance. The 109 head sold for an average of $2507.00. The 52 cows averaged $2983.65, - 25 bred heifers averaged $1846.00, - 32 open heifers average $2248.44. Buyers were from 6 states, with the lion’s share staying in the Badger state.

The most impressive post sale analysis that shows the appreciation gained in Brown Swiss is this… The 109 head sold were purchased by 57 buyers of which 25 have never owned a Registered Brown Swiss.

The sale was managed by Brown Swiss Enterprises Inc., Beloit, WI, with assistance from facility owners Rick and Paula Bovre.

Norman C. Magnussen highlighted the impressive pedigrees. Darrell A. Worden handled the gavel. Fielding the brisk bidding was Pete & Bill Stade, WI - Jake Hushon, PA - Dennis Mashek, IA, Allyn Paulson, WI - Jordon Siemers, Cowbuyer.

Special recognition must go to the Winkelmans. Their cattle were well managed every day, not just sale day, and that was appreciated by all involved. The promotion campaign was outstanding and on point. Those who saw the Twinkle-Hill cattle can verify the quality was not overstated.

Topping the sale was a first stall headliner at $8200. Lot 28, Twinkle-Hill All Spiri 1363. She is fancy uddered with 1,030f at 2-0 and sired by Twinkle-Hill Cadnc Allstar. Spiri is fresh at 3-0 milking 119 lbs. She is a 14th generation Ex/VG direct from the Kilravock Snowstorm 5E SBC family. Cole & Carter Kruse added her to their growing Swiss herd in Dyersville, IA. From another branch of the Snowstorms came the 2nd high seller at $8100, Twinkle-Hill SS Starlove 1562. A pop-out 9/21 PineTree Svr Sandstorm ETV. She is a potential 11th generation Ex/ VG.
