While this is our 22nd Annual sale it also marks our 37th year of marketing seedstock to progressive cow herds. We are proud to offer an exciting group of cattle that represent the genetics we have worked tirelessly to develop over almost 40 years.

Productive, well-rounded cattle that come easy, perform at all stages and do it in a real-world setting. We spend what seems to be never ending time weighing and measuring cattle at every stage of their life. When we look at the progress we’ve made, it shows up in how the cattle perform. From birth through all the stages, we’ve seen dramatic improvements over the years. However, one trait still is the base of profitability of the cow herd. That being productive efficiency of the cow.

Her ability to breed, calve, raise a good one and then repeat for many years is the real key to success. Finding the cows that have longevity takes time. Our goal in developing bulls is to have the bulls grow and express their potential, but not get fat. Ideally, the bulls gain just over 3 pounds a day. This is enough for comparison in the groups, but keeps the bulls from getting too fat. We know the bulls can gain more, but the race to have the biggest yearling weight or highest ADG is not as important as providing you with a bull that will last for many years and be a good investment for your cowherd.

Explanation of Performance Data, EPDs and $Indexes Definition of Terms

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels.

Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on 1st calf heifers.

Carcass Weight (CW): Estimates average differences in carcass weight. Expressed in pounds at a given age endpoint.

Birth Weight (BW): Expressed in pounds and predicts the average difference that can be expected in an animal’s offspring compared to the average.

Yield Grade (YG): Predicts differences in progeny carcass YG scores at 475 days of age.

Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight.

Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight.

Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters.

Milk (MM): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk.

Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth.

Marbling (Marb): Predicts the average difference in USDA Quality Grade in an animal’s progeny, when compared to the progeny of another animal at a given age endpoint.

Back Fat (BF): Expressed in inches of back fat, a predictor in difference in inches of carcass back fat at 475 days of age.

Rib-eye Area (REA): Predicts the average difference in REA in an animal’s progeny, when compared to the progeny of another sire.

Color and Polled Status: Homozygous: Sire all black or polled calves.

Heterozygous: Red calves may be sired by bulls, depending on the genetic color status of the cows.

Actual Birth Weight (Act. BW): Body weight measurement taken at birth.

Weaning Weight Ratio (WWR) & Yearling Weight Ratio (YWR): Weight ratios compare an individual to the rest of his or her contemporary group at a given time. Ratios are expressed as a number with 100 being average. Any animal above 100 performed better than the average calf in their respective contemporary group. ET calves and twins do not ratio for WW or YW. Scrotal Circumference (SC): Scrotal measurements will be made available on sale day.

“K.I.S.S.” - A Word on Selection Indexes Selection Indexes

K.I.S.S (Keep It Simple Stupid) K.I.S.S was an acronym I can remember being used growing up. Whether it was basketball coaches or livestock judging coaches it all meant the same. Sometimes we can make things more complicated than they need to be and K.I.S.S. is a good reminder to acknowledge that sometimes a simpler path does exist. Selection indexes do just that. However, they are based on complex calculations that are hard to follow and sometimes make you scratch your head, in the realm of indexes few fully understand the fine details. Nonetheless, the simplicity and impact one selection tool can have on your cow herd is unmatched. Most if not all breeds publish selection indexes, for this sale we will focus on the ones that relate to Angus and Simmental cattle respectfully.

Simmental

$EN–Expressed in dollar savings per cow per year, based on a sires daughters. Takes into account lactation energy requirements and differences in mature cow size. $W—Expressed in dollars per head. The expected average difference in future progeny performance for pre-weaning value. $B—Expressed in dollars per head. Helps explain differences in post-weaning and carcass value compared to calves of other sires.

TI—Evaluates sires use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.

API–Evaluates sires use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.

How do Angus and Simmental Indexes relate to each other?

When we look at selection indexes as they relate to each breed we try to simplify. API and $W are similar to one another. These indexes both focus on important traits that impact the cow herds long term profitability. In contrast TI and $B are similar to each other. Both favor cattle who’s progeny grow well after weaning and perform on the rail, ignoring maternal value.

What selection index is right for my cow herd?

As with EPDs, an evaluation of your own herd is a good place to start when it comes to determining what index is right for your cow herd.

If decisions are based upon the wrong index the results could be catastrophic. For example, if your goal is to build a cowherd anchored by reproductive excellence, longevity, calving ease, moderate cow size and optimum milk production to avoid high feed costs selection emphasis on $B or TI would likely result in a disaster. Same can be said if feedlot performance and retained ownership are goals and selection pressure is placed on $W and API, substantial profits would more than likely be left on the table.

The proper scenario to use TI and/or $B? If you sell all of your calves at weaning or retain ownership through the feeding phase use TI and $B. Rewards from selecting high TI and $B cattle will be evident when the calf crop goes to the rail and your check comes in the mail. These cattle generally speaking are built to run on a race track and in this analogy the pasture is a dirt road and the feedlot is a nascar speedway.

How often do you combine a 78 pound birth weight with a top performing bull with a 125 weaning and a 120 yearling ratio? Then you take a look at the bull and I’ll bet he’s on your favorite list. Very impressive in terms of added fleshing ability and muscle in a sound structured pakage.

The fall bulls have been managed drastically different than the spring bulls. Fall bulls were weaned in early April, grazed all summer and fed more of a grower ration this winter. Bulls are ready for heavier service and can handle more cows.

Has been all summer, fall and winter. Definitely one that gets found fast when visitors come to walk the bull lots. Impressive from every angle.

A couple years ago we had some PB AN bulls and a few SimAngus bulls sired by Cash and were very impressed with how they were able to come small, grow, have added muscle and eye appeal. It was a no-brainer to make more SimAngus Cash bulls and Z22 was the perfect match.

Most every breeder, us included, tries to improve growth performance with each calf crop. Mostly we do a good job of that facet of genetics. However, longevity and reproductive efficiency of the cow herd is of utmost importance. With that in mind we flushed SFG Katherine W31 because of the fact she has had an AI calf every year of her life and built up her resume to include an average weaning ratio of 114, yearling ratio of 112 and 108 rib eye area on her calves. She has a great udder, sound feet and legs and appears to be able to continue that feat to a ripe old age. She may not have the best EPDS but longevity of a cow herd trumps paper every day of the year. She flushes very well, so today you have the opportunity to analyze and purchase 8 Blueprint sons. The single most important trait driving profitability of a cow herd isn’t weaning weight, feedlot performance or carcass quality, it’s longevity of the cow herd and replacement heifer cost. Hard to select for though, as the only way is to let cows work for years to find the ones to build upon.

Bull Development Program

Striving to have the bulls grow and express their potential, but not get fat, is our main goal in developing bulls for our customers. We do not want to buy over-fat bulls ourselves and do not feel you do either. Ideally, the bulls gain around 3 pounds a day.

This is enough for comparison in the groups, but keeps the bulls from getting too fat. We know the bulls can gain more, but the race to have the biggest yearling weight or highest ADG is not as important as providing you with a bull that will last for many years and be a good investment for your cowherd.

Bulls are developed in pens that offer plenty of wide open space for the bulls to exercise. These pens are surrounded by high tensile electric fence.

COWHERD MANAGEMENT We have always felt our cows should not only survive but thrive under very similar management conditions as our commercial customers expect their cow herd to provide them a profitable business.

With that said, our cows are in a forage based system designed for them to take care of themselves. We strive to make the cows graze as much as possible with very little harvested feed. Under decent weather conditions the main cow herd grazes about 10 months of the year and are brought closer to home for calving. During winter months, a least cost forage based diet is fed. As soon as our cool season grasses are ready, cows are moved back to grazing cool.

With a little tricticale and corn silage we have gotten our hay needs down to about 1000# a cow for the winter. Best of all, those grazing days the cows take care of themselves. In this type of management our cows have the opportunity to show their genetic potential and we know the resulting bulls will work for our customers.

Ratios vs. Raw Weights...

As you have probably noticed, we have not put our weaning and yearling weights in the catalog.

Two very simple reasons for doing this: First, raw weights don’t tell the whole story.

How they compare to the contemporary group is what matters. Using a basketball game as an analogy, just because a team scores 80 points doesn’t mean they always win. The formula for winning isn’t just about how many points your team can score, its much more complicated than that. At this point the deciding factor is how many points the opposing team scored. Contemporary groups work the same way, by answering how a given animal compares to the average of his or her group. Ratios, not the actual weights are used to calculate the EPDs. EPDs themselves are even more important than ratios.

Secondly, environment has a huge influence on a calf ’s actual weight.

We know nutrition can push weaning weights up by several hundred pounds. We also know in our operation weaning weights can vary as much as 100 pounds from pasture to pasture. Then to further complicate matters, embryo transplant calves out of donor females are at the mercy of their recipient dam’s ability to raise a calf. Finding the best calves by simply using weights makes it extremely difficult to determine an animals true genetic value.

Ratios show how the calf compared to the group and the environment he was raised in.

In the American Simmental Association, our average animal is well above average in almost every EPD trait. In API which is the All Purpose Index, our average animal is in the top 25% of the entire breed. Likewise in TI, which is more of a terminal index, our average animal is in the top 20% of the breed.

Sunflower Genetics Exclusive Bred Heifer Option We extend to you, an opportunity to buy an open yearling heifer at our sale in the spring and turn her into a guaranteed bred heifer in the fall. For an additional $400/heifer, we are willing to keep the heifer through the summer and provide breeding and development services.
