HEALTH: Interstate health papers will be furnished on all cattle selling. The bulls have had Vista 5L5, Vision 7, and ontogenous pinkeye on or before May 1, 2016. Weaning shots of Vista 5L5, Vision 7 and ontogenous pinkeye were given in September 2017 along with Valbazen wormer, and another dose of Vista 5L5, Fusoguard footrot vaccine and Agrimectin pour on 3 weeks after weaning. Bulls were poured with CyLence pour on February 4, 2018. The bulls have been PI BVD tested negative, and were semen tested on February 27, 2018, by Nick Luke, DVM, scrotal measurements will be on a supplemental sheet sale day and on our website as soon as available. The bulls were ultrasound scanned for carcass values on February 10 and information if not shown in catalog, will be available sale day and on our web site. All the cattle selling today are tested.

We have tested for DD most animals that had that potential and if they are a carrier it will show as DDC by their names, otherwise if tested and they are free of the defect it will show as DDF, if they have a potential for the defect it will show as DDP. Neither OH, nor DD, are recognized as Lethal Defects by the American Angus Association, so registration is not affected and those animals are still recognized by the Association.

PERFORMANCE: All cattle have current 2018 EPDs and Adj. 365 weights

EPDS AND $VALUES:The American Angus Association is now calculating EPDs on a weekly basis using all available carcass harvest data, ultrasound data and the Igenity specific genomic profile data. It is possible new data has been submitted between the date the sale book was finalized and sale day, which will affect the individual EPDs and $Values indexes of the animals selling. If your purchasing decision relies highly on the most current carcass data available, please look up animals of interest on the American Angus Association web page, www.angus.org, prior to viewing the sale offering.

TERMS: Cash - please settle for cattle promptly. Animals will not be loaded until settlement is made. All animals selected sale day must be paid for on sale day.

INTEREST RETAINED IN BULLS: We are retaining 1/3 semen interest in every bull in this sale, because it generally takes several years for a sire to be “discovered,” we feel we can help our customers find and market bulls that float to the top. You will own full possession and 100% salvage value of the bull. We are retaining the right to 1/3 of the semen sales revenue from the bull if sometime in the future semen sales become a possibility. If you decide to have semen collected for your own herd use, that semen is 100% yours. Please contact Black Velvet Cattle for an opportunity to collect him in a joint venture, splitting semen production costs and revenue of semen sales on a share basis.

GUARANTEE: All bulls are guaranteed against breeding injury for the first breeding season. If a replacement bull is available, he will be provided, or if the buyer prefers, credit toward one bull will be given in the following year’s sale, figured according to the following: The injured bull shall be sold in the name of Black Velvet Cattle with freeze brand and ear tag notated by sale barn or packing house, and the base value for the injured bull shall be $1500, unless the injured bull sells for more than that amount, and all credits will be figured on such base amount. Please let us know as soon as you have a problem, waiting until the following year will void the guarantee.

TRUCKING: We will be glad to assist in making the best possible trucking arrangements. We offer free delivery within 300 miles on all bulls purchased and if further than 300 miles on a total purchase of $5,000 or more, bulls will be delivered to a central point. Delivery will begin April 1st, if bulls need to be left longer than that, a $3.50 per day charge will apply.

INSURANCE: Will be available sale day through Jason Ortman, a Hartford Insurance Agent.

LIABILITY: All persons attending this sale do so at their own risk, legal or otherwise for their safety or the behavior of the animals. The Owners, Auction Service and Sale Staff assume no liability for property loss or any accidents that may occur.

LUNCH: You are invited to be guests of Black Velvet Cattle for a complimentary lunch on sale day.

DISCOUNTS: There will be a discount of $100/purchaser on bulls that are picked up by April 1. We will keep all bulls free of charge through April 1, 2018. If you want your bulls delivered, we can do that, but you will not get a hauling discount and we will need to deliver them on or around April 1, as we will be too busy past that point. Multi-bull discounts are as follows: Same buyer purchases 3 bulls, 3% discount. Same buyer purchases 4 bulls, 4% discount. Same buyer purchases 5 or more bulls, 5% discount.

Welcome Dear Friends & Fellow Cattle Producers, Welcome to our 9th Annual Sale, BVC Top Cut Event. We will be offering our top 50 bulls in an auction and private treaty format. We have included all 75 of our bulls in our catalog, but only the Top 50 will be offered on March 10th. We think with this format, we will have a more relaxed atmosphere. We will be able to assist our customers in their bull selection process, without much auction pressure. The top 10 bulls will be offered on an auction basis with a base price. If not sold for more than the base price they will be offered private treaty for that base price. The remaining 40 bulls will be priced in 4 more groups, according to their base prices. After the top ten bulls are auctioned, we will start taking purchases. Bull numbers will be announced as purchases come in and if another purchaser has that particular bull selected there will be a bid off on that bull. As soon as all customers have submitted their purchases that day, we will close the auction.

You are welcome to come any time before the sale, or earlier on that day, to pick your favorites to be sold on March 10. If you don’t get a bull purchased that day, there will still be bulls that we will offere for sale private treaty beginning March 11, they will be semen tested, but will not be clipped, freeze branded, ultrasound scanned or DNA tested.

We will keep your purchased bulls until April 1, free of charge, if you agree to pick them up by April 1, you will then receive a haul your own bull discount of $100 per customer. If you would like to have your bulls delivered, there will be no discounts applied at sale time and they will need to be delivered on or around April 1, as we get too busy past that point in time. If you would like insurance on your purchases, it will be available sale day. Breeding injury will be covered by our guarantee, but death should be covered by an insurance policy.

We are offering females on a private treaty basis, let us know if you are interested in females.

Tour of Duty is the only bull in the Angus breed with his combination of Birth to Yearling Weight spread, Docility, superior Maternal traits and highly profitable $B, all with over 6,000 registered progeny. He is a stand out performance bull that uniquely combines stoutness, base width, and muscle with depth of fore rib, phenotype, and eye appeal second to none. Musgrave Angus top selling bull of the 2013 sale at $77,000. He is a tremendous individual that is high volumed, very thick and eye-appealing. The heaviest quartered, biggest boned and footed calving-ease prospect produced from their herd. He has an impressive 50K test score of 6 for CED and 8 for birth weight while ranking in the top 30 percent for weaning and yearling weight. His daughters are turning out to be moderate framed and great producers. The cowman’s favorite at ORIgen, he’s medium framed, full bodied and thick. You’ll be even more impressed when you see the robust ribcage, the muscle down his top and the way he carries depth in to his lower quarter. This bull is full of meat. A sleep-all-night heifer bull with high accuracy EPDs, great feet and docile disposition. He is setting the industry standard for calving ease, muscle and phenotype. Aviator is homozygous TT for the Leptin gene that improves feed efficiency, appetite, marbling and maternal strength. Since coming across the Canadian border in March, 2016, he has sold more semen this year directly through ORIgen than any bull in the lineup. BVC Ace 4009 was the top bull of our 2014 calf crop, sired by the great Aviator and having a 65# birth weight, adj. weaning weight of 782# to ratio 118, adj. yearling wt. of 1348# to ratio 112, ratioing 120 on IMF and 100 on RE. He also ratioed 110 on rate of gain on test. He is definitely a low birthweight sire, even on high birth weight cows. His calves are born small and vigorous and grow fast. We expect him to be a great sire here at Black Velvet.

He can be described by those who saw him sale day as the thickest, heaviest muscled bull ever produced at Musgrave Angus. His progeny are the evidence, the caliber of Invision ranks him as a sire of muscle and performance. His calves are light and vigorous at birth and none have been born with assistance when mated with virgin heifers. He has out produced himself and those who have used Invision are very well pleased with the results.

A great Invision son here. Invision is a truly great bull we’ve had the good fortune to use. His offspring are great cattle, and this one is one of the greater ones. If you want pounds on your calves at weaning or as yearlings this one will deliver. All of these Invision bulls are truly great bulls, and the females are just as awesome. 7010 has a weaning ratio of 110 and his i50k results show that he is truly a growth bull.

We recommend you not use birth weight very much in your selection decision.

The BW EPD is a much better indicator of what’s in the calf genetically, and in natural calves, his own birth weight has been factored into his BW EPD. Studies have shown EPDs to be as much as nine times more accurate than ratios or raw weights as a selection tool.

We believe in breeding heifers to low BW EPD bulls, with a CED of +7 or higher.

CED is only a measure for use in breeding heifers and is not meant to be a measure for breeding cows. It seems to us that the Angus breed has gotten a bit carried away with the concept of birth EPDs, when it comes to breeding cows. Our experience is that a big, stout calf at birth is usually the big stout calf at weaning. So remember that a +8.0 BW EPD in an Angus bull is equivalent to a +2.8 BW EPD in Simmental or a -1.3 BW EPD Charolais according to the 2010 Across Breed EPDs of the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center.

Also, an old University of Missouri study showed that cows will naturally try to produce a calf that weighs about 7% of her own body weight. Seven percent of a 1,000 pound cow is 70 pounds, but 7% of a 1,500 pound cow is 105 pounds.

Our cows are by no means small, and our average mature cow weight is close to that 1,500 pound figure.

EPD EVALUATION

We have the following abbreviations throughout this sale book with regard to EPDs. Remember that an EPD is an estimate of how future progeny will perform, relative to other Angus cattle with EPD values. The accuracy figure, just after the EPD, indicates the possible future change in the EPD. The higher the accuracy, the less likely the EPD will change appreciably.

BW - Birth weight, expressed in pounds.

WW - Weaning weight, expressed in pounds adjusted to 205 days of age.

Milk - Influence of the dam, due to her milking ability, on weaning weight, expressed in pounds of calf weaned.

YW - Yearling weight, expressed in pounds adjusted to 365 days of age.

CW - Carcass weight, expressed in pounds at a given end point.

MB - Marbling, expressed as a portion of a marbling score (one point of marbling score = 1/3 quality grade).

REA - Ribeye area, expressed in square inches, at a given end point.

FT - Fat thickness, expressed in inches, at a given end point.

SC - Scrotal circumference, expressed in centimeters, at a year of age.

CED - Percentage of unassisted births when a sire is mated to virgin heifers. Higher values indicate more unassisted births.

CEM - Percentage of unassisted births as first calf heifers.

DOC - Percentage increase in number of progeny scoring 1 (most docile).

Remember that no EPD is absolute. It simply allows you to compare genetic differences in sires. As an example, if you were to use a high accuracy +30 WW EPD sire in your herd, and the weaning weights average 550 pounds, then you could expect a high accuracy +40 WW EPD sire to sire calves averaging 560 pounds, if used in exactly the same situation. A sire with a +6.0 BW EPD should sire calves averaging four pounds heavier at birth than a sire with a +2.0 BW EPD.
