SALE TERMS AND CONDITIONS All bulls sell fully guaranteed under Suggested Sale Terms and conditions of the American Angus Association.

Terms are CASH. All bulls are to be paid for during or immediately after the sale and will not be released until settlement has been made. Cattle will not be transferred until paid for in full.

HERD HEALTH All bulls are on a complete health program. All bulls have been vaccinated for 7-Way, Blackleg, BVD, Haemophius and BRVS. Bulls were recently poured with Ivomec. All bulls have been tested negative for trich and PI BVD. FERTILITY AND SOUNDNESS All bulls have been semen tested and certified as satisfactory breeders. Scrotal measurements will be available sale day.

PAP SCORES All cattle have been PAP tested by Dr. Tim Holt. These bulls were born, raised and developed at high altitude. They spent the summer at 7,500 to 9,000 feet. Lazy JB Angus has been PAP testing for over 25 years.

INSPECTION OF BULLS & HEIFERS Cattle may be inspected at any time prior to the Sale.

INSURANCE Insurance will be available sale day. Please notify sale clerk if you wish to purchase insurance.

FIRST BREEDING SEASON All bulls selling for $3,500 or more are guaranteed to be satisfactory breeders for the first breeding season. A breeding season is defined as the 90 day period following the first turnout of the bull. All animals become the responsibility of the buyers when the animal leaves the ring. This guarantee does not cover illness, injury, death or neglect. If a replacement bull is available he will be provided or if the buyer prefers, credit for the amount of purchase minus $1,500 will be applied toward one bull will be given in the following sale. Buyer keeps the salvage value. Please notify Lazy JB as soon as possible should breeding injury occur prior to the injured bull being sold for salvage. All breeding injuries must be diagnosed by a veterinarian and all claims must be made by September 1, 2018. This is not a mortality insurance policy nor does it cover mismanagement or neglect.

Thank you for taking the time to look at our 2018 Annual Bull Sale catalog, we are excited to offer you the deepest, most complete set of yearling Angus bulls and females ever produced at Lazy JB! Our offering this year is the direct result of a successful program that has been over 5 decades in the making. As you look through this year’s catalog you will see more “outcross” sires offered and a lot of new young high performance sire groups.

Buying a bull is not only an investment, but a promise to your cows that you are making an effort to help them succeed in production. The bulls offer the muscle, performance, eye appeal and longevity to help your cows improve the quality of their next calf crop and your bottom line. At Lazy JB we don’t believe every bull born should remain a bull and therefore the bulls in the sale are the “cream of the crop”, the highest performers in some of the country’s roughest environments, the thickest made, longest bodied and overall highest quality individuals our herd has to offer. Our selection criteria is not taken lightly; quality ranks at the forefront followed by the ability to adapt to different environment settings and we put as much emphasis on the sire’s track record as we do the dam’s. The bulls offered were born at 6,500 feet and spent their summer and part of fall grazing at elevations ranging from 7,500 to 9,000 feet.

We’ve taken the offering one step further this year in that we not only have outstanding phenotype, but as you study the catalog you will find bulls backed with breed topping EPD’s as well. Unquestionably the bulls have performed above expectation at high altitude and the entire offering including the heifers collectively averaged a PAP score of 39.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE AS AN ABSENTEE BUYER

We have made preparations to bid and buy livestock through Superior Productions’ “Call or Click-To-Bid” service for those unable to attend in person on sale day. Please note that all of the lots in the sale will also be available for viewing online prior to sale day at www.superiorlivestock.com.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS

Turn in Bids Over the Phone. This is our traditional method of buying livestock. To get started simply go online to www.superiorlivestock. com and click on the tab titled “Register for a Buyer Number”. Select the registration form for Superior Productions and print the registration form, fill it out and fax it in to Superior Productions at (817) 378-3380 with a signature on it, or scan and email the form to info@superiorauction.com. You can also mail it in to the address provided on the form. Upon receipt of this information Superior will call you with a buyer’s number and the bid line phone number that you will use on sale day to place bids over the phone.

Click-To-Bid. This is Superior’s online bidding platform for cattle buying. Please note that high speed internet is required – this is not for dial-up or satellite internet. Registration is free, but you must become a member of www.superiorclicktobid.com to sign up. Becoming a member is easy - just go to the homepage of www.superiorclicktobid.com and follow the out-lined steps to get started. Input your information and select a username and password. You will receive an e-mail confirming you are a member. From that point forward you just have to sign in and select the sale you would like to register for and once approved you will receive an e-mail confirming which sale you are now registered for.

riginally located outside of Louisville, Colorado, Lazy JB Angus was founded on land purchased by John and Rose Biella and their son, Frank and his wife, Elizabeth in 1924.

The brand was purchased in 1926, and the belief that if you work hard enough, you can be successful kept the ranch going during the depression. Frank worked in the coal mines, and Liz milked the cows and took care of the chickens; she then sold milk, cream, eggs and butter to folks living in Louisville. They had three children, June, Donna and Richard.

It was from Richard’s desire to raise Angus that Lazy JB Angus came to be. At the age of sixteen, Richard received his first Angus heifer. She was a Christmas present from his parents. “Black Diamond”, named after the coal mine Frank worked in, was the foundation female of the commercial Angus herd that would eventually become a registered operation.

Richard married Elaine DeSantis in 1954. They had four children, Kathi, Chris, Jenny and Richard, Jr. All the children showed cattle at the local county fair. In the 1970’s, they exhibited at the Colorado State Fair, Western Regional Junior Angus Show and the National Junior Angus Show. In 1974, Kathi met Forrest Toyne from Sedgwick, Colorado. Cy Winkler, a consultant for many of the “elite” Angus herds of that time, had helped “Frosty” put together a herd of high value cattle. His cattle were sought out by cattlemen across the United States. It was an honor and a privilege to have the pick of the herd and that opportunity was

given to Richard and Kathi in the fall of 1974. They selected a young Emulous bred heifer that would be awarded Grand Champion of the Colorado State Fair Junior Show.

Kathi’s desire was just as strong as her father’s and she continued to help her parents care and show their Angus cattle. In July, 1985, Kathi married Jeff Creamer, and they continued to help with the cattle operation. The family continued to grow with the birth of Brandon and Britney. Both children would tag along to check cows, feed and livestock shows.

The operation moved to Montrose, Colorado in March of 1998. The ranch had survived the Depression and a major highway cutting through it, but could not survive with development surrounding it. The cattle were already accustomed to summering on mountain pastures, so adjusting to the new environment of the western slope of Colorado was minimal. The operation continues to grow in numbers and quality just 2 miles south of Montrose.

The work ethic that kept the ranch in the early 1900’s continues today with each individual playing a major role in the success of Lazy JB Angus. It is the first hand knowledge of what the cattle carrying the Lazy JB brand can do and the desire to produce superior Angus cattle that will continue to bring customers and visitors to Lazy JB Angus.

UNDERSTANDING BIRTH EPDS

There’s not a single person out there who wants to spend every waking minute with their cows and assisting with births. And in a search to reduce the labor and death loss of calving some producers have been selecting primarily for low-birth-weight-EPD bulls. What we’ve noticed is that the birth EPD is NOT fully understood. So let’s take a look at what these numbers actually mean…………….

An EPD is a prediction of the average progeny performance, not a guarantee. To demonstrate how birth weight EPDs work, consider the following two bulls in Example 1.

EXAMPLE: BIRTH WEIGHT EPD

EPD in pounds:

Sire A +5.1

Sire B +1.2

The expected difference in the progeny of Sire A and Sire B for birth weight is 3.9 pounds. Sire A has an EPD of +5.1 and Sire B has an EPD of +1.2. On the average, it would be expected that the calves from Sire A would be 3.9 pounds heavier at birth than calves from Sire B. This is assuming that all calves are man-aged uniformly and are from cows of similar genetic merit and age.

How one selects their bulls will more than likely change when an understanding of “Birth EDPs” is developed. Rather than searching for the lowest birth EPD in the sale, we should compare the birth EPDs using the mathematical equation demon-strated above.

Before heading off to the next bull sale an evaluation of your cow herd, including birth weights, calving issues is important before selecting a bull, but don’t forget to look at all the traits! Selection based on a single trait can cost you performance and money. We are in the beef business; there is no substitute for fertility, soundness and performance.

In the February 2012 edition of the Angus Beef Bulletin, American Angus Association Regional Manager, David Gazda, “At the risk of being controversial, many of these small calf scenarios could be eliminated if the producers would simply be willing to accept more birth weight, particularly when breeding mature cows. One only has to attend a production or test station sale to witness firsthand how the heavier-birth-weight-EPD bulls are penalized and therefore sell at a substantial dis-count. Have calving-ease and low-birth-weight EPDs been overemphasized to commercial producers? Maybe; maybe not.”

PAP MEASUREMENTS

Over the years cattlemen have attempted to reduce the selection and the development of cattle to numbers on a piece of paper. In reality there are numerous factors that affect the production and performance of cattle. We believe that PAP scores are an important selection tool but are often misunderstood. The registered bull business is extremely competitive creating a “NUMBERS RACE”. Every breeder has a different theory and philosophy regarding PAP scores.

In all fairness to our customers who graze cattle at high altitude and those who do not we want to share with you the facts:

q Cattle at 6,000 or above feet are most at risk for “Brisket or High Altitude Disease”.

q Cattle PAP tested at low elevations (less than 5000 feet) may have acceptably low scores at that time, but when re-tested at higher elevations the score may increase. To increase the repeatability of the PAP test cattle should be tested at 6,000 feet or higher and must be at that elevation for at least 3-6 weeks

44 and below – low risk

45 – 49 – moderate risk

50 and above – high risk

q The PAP test can HELP determine which animals are most at risk for brisket disease or a possible genetic risk, de-tecting the early stages of the problem, and elevated PAP measurement.

q Interestingly, the problem sometimes appears in feedlot cattle, even at low elevations, as they get heavier and closer to finish weight. This entire situation is not fully understood at this time but may be related to growth, size and the body’s demand for more oxygen, because the heart must work harder.
