The Livestock Merchandising Class at North Carolina State University will be holding its 13th Annual Wolfpack Roundup Sale on Saturday, April 18, 2026 at 1 pm. An educational program will start at 10 am and consist of research updates, a presentation on feeding for reproductive success, and sale updates. Lunch will be served at 12 pm.
The Livestock Merchandising class is responsible for the organization, preparations and running of the Wolfpack Round Up sale. The class was started to give students the opportunity to learn about different methods available to merchandise livestock. Students also gain hands-on experience through promoting and conducting a livestock auction. You can get to know our 2026 Livestock Merchandising class on the following pages and meet them in-person on sale day.
In order to broaden the student learning experience, the sheep portion of this year’s sale will be hosted online by Production Livestock Auctions. The sale offering will be on display at the Wolfpack Round Up sale, with online bidding set to finish at the conclusion of the live cattle sale. Assistance will be available to anyone on sale day unfamiliar with the online format and lots will be available for pick-up on sale day.
The cattle offering will go through the sale ring and sell live in-person. For those that cannot attend, we will be showing the sale via Facebook live. If unable to attend on sale day and interested in cattle lots, please call Matt Morrison by Friday, April 17th and we will make arrangements for you to bid on the animal(s) of your choice on sale day. You can also leave us with a bid and we will make sure to get business handled. Check our Facebook page (link below) for updates.
If you would like to view the sale offerings before sale day, you can contact the respective Educational Unit representatives to make an appointment to visit.

We’d like to give a special thank you to Dr. Paul Siciliano for his 20 years of service to NC State University. Paul has served in recent years as an Associate Department Head and Extension Leader for the NC State Department of Animal Science. As Associate Department Head, Paul has played a critical often unseen role in facilitating the many changes and improvements at the teaching farms. His steady helping hand and sage wisdom will be sorely missed as he retires to be a fulltime family man and devote Christian. From the depth of our hearts from the crew at the E. Carroll Joyner Beef Education Unit and the countless students Paul has impacted over the last 20 years, we simply say thank you.

We believe that the 130J Donor cow is the missing piece needed to take the E. Carroll Joyner BEU Hereford program to the next level. We’re grateful for the opportunity to partner with Five J’s Cattle Company on this journey to take a solid set of Hereford cows and try to build an elite operation. 130J comes from the heart of the Innisfail program in Georgia, she’s slick haired, dark red, short marked, and sets an almost impossible amount of muscle and rib shape on a near flawless skeleton. In a world where numbers help market cattle, she excels in growth and carcass traits, while keeping maternal traits well above the average. Did we mention that she has the feet and udder quality true cattlemen dream about.

As a true commitment to having the highest quality offering in the Wolfpack Round Up, we’re going to let everyone have a shot at getting a 130J son. Without a doubt the best pair of bulls we’ve ever raised at the Beef Unit. 130J is the crown jewel of our program and flushing her to NJW Steadfast simply made sense. The result, a pair of slick haired, rugged, big footed bulls with true muscle backed by an elite set of numbers. The EPD’s behind these bulls are so good there’s too many traits and indexes in the top 25% to list them all. We believe these bulls structure and rib shape can improve purebred cow herds and generate crossbreds that stay in production to make a profit. Make sure to study this pair of bulls in person, we still haven’t figured out which one’s better.

Don’t get caught up in the paperwork, we’ve got confidence in this one’s pedigree he’ll make the kind of feeder steers that push the scales down at the barn. There’s too much power and growth behind this bull to recommend him for use on heifers but turn him loose on mature cows and count your dollars. With the cattle market on fire, you can’t afford to not capitalize by buying a black bull with growth and hybrid vigor. Will have a breeding soundness exam prior to sale day.

The Upper Piedmont Research Station (UPRS), located in Reidsville, NC, operates as the seedstock operation for the NC Beef System. UPRS focuses on improving maternal genetics while grazing Kentucky-31 fescue. The NC Beef System is a cooperative effort between NC State and the NC Department of Ag, managing over 500 registered Angus pairs across 6 research stations. Multiple research stations have installed the Vytelle Sense feed intake monitoring system. We are excited to be consigning cattle with feed efficiency data.
(RFI), is a measure of feed efficiency calculated as the difference between an animal’s actual feed intake and its predicted feed intake for a given level of production. Lower RFI values are more favorable representing more efficient cattle.
FEED CONVERSION RATIO (FCR), represents the amount of feed (in pounds) needed to gain one pound of body weight. This value is expressed in comparison to the group average, so a lower value represents a more efficient animal (i.e. a -0.5 FCR means the animal consumed .5 less pounds of feed for every pound gained in body weight).

She ranks in the top 15% and 20% for growth, 10% and 15% for Marbling and Ribeye Area. Her indexes are beyond solid, every one of them in the top 45% or better with $AxH, $AxJ $G, and $B in the top 10%. Her impressive 304 $C puts her in the top 15%. With a functional longevity EPD in the top 3% of the breed, and her power, she ought to make some easy to market bulls and daughters that stay in production.

RFI: -1.68 FCR: -0.16. Don’t let the fact that K502 isn’t pictured concern you. She’s not mean, high headed or displeasing to the eye. If you’ve ever worked a picture pen you know that not all cattle cooperate, kind of like getting a 4 year old to smile for the family photo. This young female does some neat things on paper being as balanced as you can make one. Talk about covering the spread, in the top 3% for CED and BW and still makes it into the top 35% for growth. Great Teat, Udder and longevity figures and her 98 $M puts her in top 2%. $W, $F, $B and $C all in at least the top 30 percentile. In a world where input costs never stop climbing, she leads the offering with a RFI of -1.68.

An October daughter of Beal Breakthrough, serves as a great testament to the L505 cow’s abilities. Don’t miss the value in this pair just because they sell without papers.

The 2026 Livestock Merchandising class is grateful for the opportunity to market cattle for the Cherry Research Farm. Their offering last year was such a huge hit, they have agreed to consign 10 pairs this year.
The Cherry research farm is a late fall calving herd located in the Coastal Plains of Goldsboro NC. They have worked diligently to build a cowherd that is moderate slick haired and thrives in a low input minimal supplementation system. Heifers are developed in large silvopastures and work well through the North Carolina summers. Historically the Cherry Research Farm incorporated the slick gene with Senepol genetics, over the last several years, they have been AI’ing females to Angus bulls with a focus on maternal traits and improved hair-shedding EPDs. The crew at the Cherry research farm are true believers in low stress animal handling and it shows, these young slick haired pairs are easy to handle and doing a great job raising a nice set of calves.
