Come Blow Your Horn U.S. Livestock Genetics Export, Inc. (USLGE) is a nonprofit, nationwide trade association that brings together a broad base of U.S. livestock organizations. Since the start of USLGE in 1993, they have been a service organization of the U.S. Department of Agriculture–Foreign Agricultural Service (USDA-FAS). They represent the international marketing interests of the dairy, beef, swine, horse, and small ruminant (sheep and goats) breeding industries. Their members also include the embryo and semen industries, livestock export sector, and State Departments of Agriculture. The Brown Swiss Association is a paid member of USLGE. The United States has long been recognized as the world leader in dairy genetics and now genomics — Why? Because they are backed by years of successful performance evaluation from generations of cattle that have been bred for good health and high milk production and quality. Producers benefit from offspring from many sires that are nationally distributed across many herds, environments, and management types. Producers also benefit from a selection focus on total economic merit: production, type, health, and longevity.

has been in the form of Brown Swiss staff members and classifiers as well as the many Brown Swiss breeders who have served as judges at shows throughout the world. The recent World Brown Swiss Conference held in Madison, WI, benefitted from our membership in USLGE. My recent trip to the International Dairy Week (IDW) in Australia, to help staff the USLGE booth, gave me firsthand exposure as to why we want to have not only a US representative but a US Brown Swiss representative involved. Other countries and other breeds want to sell their genetics. There are reportedly 2.1 million dairy cattle in the land down under, with eight A.I. companies competing for semen sales at the IDW, several based in Australia.

There is competition not only for semen sales but live cattle and embryo exports to China and other countries in the Asian sub-continent. Our involvement in USLGE has provided your chosen breed and your genetics actual “boots on the ground” global exposure.

If we don’t blow our own Brown Swiss horn, nobody is going to blow it for us!

With funding provided through USLGE to promote US genetics, the Brown Swiss Association, as have others, has been able to send in-person representatives to every populated continent. Our representation

The 2022 All American contest is the 57th in this annual competition. The judges of the 6 National Shows placed 151 individuals and 25 groups to narrow the nomination field. There were 103 single entries and 17 group classes approved to move forward in this competition. Between the 874 head that were presented at National shows and the additional twenty-nine qualifying shows, there was plenty of superior entrants to work with!

The new Summer Junior 2-Year-old class had 8 entries and produced a 3-way tie in the nomination process. The tie breaker solved one tie. The remaining two cows had exactly the same votes, so both were included, making a class of seven.

Below are a few interesting stats from this year’s contest!         

The 2022 All American contest is the 57th in this annual competition. The judges of the 6 National Shows placed 151 individuals and 25 groups to narrow the nomination field. There were 103 single entries and 17 group classes approved to move forward in this competition. Between the 874 head that were presented at National shows and the additional twenty-nine qualifying shows, there was plenty of superior entrants to work with!

The new Summer Junior 2-Year-old class had 8 entries and produced a 3-way tie in the nomination process. The tie breaker solved one tie. The remaining two cows had exactly the same votes, so both were included, making a class of seven.

Both Chilli Pepper and Carter were some of the first Brown Swiss bulls genomic tested as young bulls and both tested high for type. As stated before, Chilli Pepper went to Select Sires and Carter headed for New Generation Genetics (NGG). “Jake (Jake Hushon, U.S. Sales Manager for NGG) and my dad formed a special connection over the years based on Carter,” said Dayne. My dad always said, “I would rather have Premier Sire at World Dairy Expo than Grand Champion cow,” explains Dayne. Charles passed in the summer of 2018, just months before Carter was named Premier Sire of the Heifer show of the International Brown Swiss Show at World Dairy Expo.

At one time, Voelkers were milking 30 Carter daughters. Today, 12 milking daughters are in the herd and average +1242 on milk deviation compared to herd mates. Even as a high-type bull, Carter is still plus 1012 pounds of Milk on his 12/2022 summary. The highest-scored Carter daughters on the Voelker Farm are Voelkers Carter Almighty 2E93, the Honorable Mention All-American 4-Year-Old 2019; R Bay Carters 3737 E93; and Voelkers Carter Rachel E91, the Reserve All-American Jr. 3-Year-Old 2017. “We still use Carter as a mating sire today, primarily in our in-vitro program,” said Dayne.

On April 22, 2010, a bull calf that would be named Voelkers TD Carter was born. Not known at the time was the tremendous impact that bull calf would have on the Brown Swiss breed over the next thirteen years.

Carter was born on a dairy approximately one hundred miles south of St. Louis, Missouri, at Voelker Swiss Farm, Perryville, Missouri. At the time, the farm was owned and operated by Charles and Nancy Voelker with their children Chad, Suzanne, Katie, Dayne, and Grant. Since then, Charles passed in 2018, Suzanne’s last name is now Schamburg and Katie’s last name is Hill, Katie is the official breeder of Carter. “My grandfather started the farm in 1946 when he came home from his service in World War II, and we have had Brown Swiss ever since,” said Dayne. Today the farm is owned and operated by Nancy, Chad, and Dayne, with the herd consisting of 175 cows and 140 heifers, all Registered Brown Swiss.

Carter was almost done before he ever got started. At just a few weeks old the bull was found one morning with his back feet and legs caught in a panel and he was hanging with his knees on the ground. “He couldn’t walk or stand for 2 weeks after that incident,” said Dayne, “We gave him extra care and he came back as if it never happened.”

Carter’s greatness can be seen in his pedigree with multiple generations of EX and VG dams that carry the Voelkers prefix. “His granddam, Candid, is the matriarch of the cow family,” states Dayne. Voelkers Migel Candid was 4E94 and E95MS and produced 5-03 335d 33,090 5.1 1,673 3.6 1,189 with a lifetime production of 3,186 days 222,610 Milk 9,947 Fat 7,389 Protein and was the All-American 5-Year-Old in 2009. She is backed by two generations of Voelker-bred dams that are both VG. Candid was mated to the 2014 World Dairy Expo Premier Sire, Top Acres C Wonderment, a son of the well-known cow, Top Acres EJ Whizzbang 5E93. That mating produced Carter’s dam, Voelkers Wndrnt Carabella E90, that produced at 4-05 365d 2X 32,300 4.2 1,368 3.4 1,106. “My dad made the Wonderment X Candid mating that also produced Chilli Pepper,” said Dayne. Voelkers Wndt Chilli Pepper *TM was a high-type bull that was marketed by Select Sires.

Voelkers TD Carter *TM arrived at New Generation Genetics (NGG), Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, at approximately one year of age, and his semen was released in August 2011.

“Carter was the number-one Genomic-tested bull for PTAT in the Brown Swiss breed,” notes Jake Hushon, U.S. Sales Manager for NGG, “We sold his semen from the time he was released up to [the] present day.”

Carter-sired heifers started to be seen and placed high in the show ring in 2012, with more daughters being added to and placing high in heifer classes in 2013 and 2014. In 2014, the first two All-American Nominations were added to his resumé. One of those nominations was for the All-American Jr. 2 Yr. Old, Rockstar Carter Fergie, owned by the Tuman Family of Minnesota. “Fergie was Carter’s first daughter in milking form to be Nominated All-American,” explained Jake. Carter continued to have daughters Nominated All-American, with three nominated in 2015, two in 2016, and five in 2017.

In 2018, Carter-sired daughters erupted with ten All-American Nominations. He was named Premier Sire of the Heifer Show at the International Brown Swiss Show at World Dairy Expo, and Carter daughters were first or second-place in four of the seven heifer classes.

He also sired the Reserve Junior Champion and Honorable Mention Junior Champion females of the Open Show as well as the Reserve Junior Champion of the Junior Show. A Carter daughter was the Intermediate Champion and Reserve Grand Champion of the Junior Show.

2019 saw Carter daughters earn nine All-American Nominations.

He was again named Premier Sire of the Heifer Show at the International Brown Swiss Show, World Dairy Expo. His daughters won three of the heifer classes, and he sired the Reserve Junior Champion of the Open Show, the Junior Champion, and the Intermediate Champion/Grand Champion of the Junior Show.

2020 had Carter daughters again at ten All-American Nominations.

There was no International Brown Swiss Show that year since World Dairy Expo was cancelled because of COVID. In 2021, Carter daughters earned twelve All-American Nominations. He was the third NGG sire to be awarded the Ted Krueger Premier Sire Award as Premier Sire of the International Brown Swiss Cow Show. Carter was also the Premier Sire of the Heifer Show at World Dairy Expo. His daughters placed in the top five of all but one of the heifer classes. The young cow classes saw numerous daughters place in the top 10 of each class. Carter sired the Reserve Intermediate Champion and HM Intermediate Champion of the Junior Show.

It is incredible to see the animals that are creating the next generation of excellent Brown Swiss Cattle and advancing our breed for the future. Breeders and exhibitors should be proud of everything they put into breeding and developing these great cows.

Spring Shows

Spring shows will be fast approaching now that we are already into February. Do not forget to prepare the lease paperwork or transfers in time for our youth to show their cattle in the upcoming shows. I am excited for the start of the 2023 shows and cannot wait to see you all there!

Contest Applications

Next month ALL applications for the National Youth Brown Swiss Contests will be due March 31st. Do not wait to start these applications in case you have any questions. I highly encourage all youth to apply for at least one of the contests. There is a wide array to choose from, and I guarantee at least one will pertain to you! For

One contest that I will particularly push youth to apply for is the National Brown Swiss Ambassador. Our breed needs passionate young adults to advocate for us and continue pushing us into the future. I have truly enjoyed my time serving as the National Brown Swiss Ambassador and would love to pass down the position to someone excited for the future of our breed and who wants to give back to those that have given us so much as Brown Swiss youth.

From meeting breeders at shows to interacting with other youth at different events, serving as the Brown Swiss Ambassador has been a great and wholesome experience. Giving back to the breed and breeders has truly been rewarding. If you are passionate about the breed, enjoy going to shows and events with other Brown Swiss enthusiasts, and want to give back to this breed and the breeders, apply for the National Brown Swiss Ambassador position today!

William A. Siegert

Madison Rose Johnson

June 13, 1939 - December 7, 2022 William A. Siegert, 83, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, December 7, 2022, at MercyOne surrounded by his family in Dubuque, Iowa.

Bill was born June 13, 1939, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Walter and Clara (Kress) Siegert. He was a graduate of Senior High School in Dubuque, Iowa. He was united in marriage on July 26, 1960, to Janet McKenna at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Garryowen, Iowa. Together the couple farmed in the rural Dubuque, Iowa, with Holstein and Brown Swiss dairy cattle. He enjoyed driving tractors and doing field work until the end. There were days bill could hardly walk, but he would always find a way to climb into a tractor. Bill spent many summers driving his red tractors with friends and family on the WMT Tractorcade.

Bill was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, who truly loved spending time with his family and friends. He enjoyed playing cards with his friends, especially at Breitbach’s. He also enjoyed his casino outings and afternoon rides in his Pink 1959 Ford Galaxy.

He was a member of the St. John the Baptist Parish in Peosta, Iowa.

Bill was also a member of Farm Bureau and Farmer’s Union Milk Marketers. He was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears, and the Iowa Hawkeyes and Iowa State Cyclones fan.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Janet Siegert of Dubuque; seven children, Peggy (Mark) Kass of Peosta, Thomas (Melissa) Siegert, Sandra (Mark) LaRue, David Siegert all of Dubuque, Wayne Siegert of Minneapolis, MN, Daniel (Trish) Siegert of Peosta, Cynthia (Dan) Hilkin of Dubuque; grandchildren, Jason (Amanda) Kass, Curtis (Sheena) Kass, Marty (Liz) Kass, Matt Kass, Stacy (Matt) Cook, Emily Hermsen, Dr. Sydney LaRue, Josh LaRue, Mallory Siegert, Jayden Siegert, Carson Siegert, Amber Siegert, Chris Webley, Wyatt Hilkin, Gwyn Hilkin, Taylor Hilkin, and Evey Hilkin; 9 great grandchildren; two sisters, Shirley Bergfeld and Jeanette (Gary) Fagan both of Dubuque; two sister-in-law, Maureen Siegert of Dubuque and Rose (Joe) Staner of Cascade; brother-in-law, Robert McKenna of Bernard.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Kenneth Siegert; one brother-in-law, John Bergfeld; his Father and Motherin-law, Lawrence and Florence (Donovan) McKenna; one niece, Laurie Valentine; and one grandson.

December 31, 2006 - December 28, 2022 Madison Rose Johnson, age 15, of Cochranton, Pennsylvania, passed away unexpectedly on December 28, 2022, from injuries sustained in a car accident. She was born on December 31, 2006, at UPMC Northwest, the daughter of the Kevin R. and Holly L. (Deeter) Johnson.

Maddie was an avid dairy showman in many show rings, in PA, NY, and MD. She won numerous awards for showmanship, along with numerous accolades with her prized Brown Swiss show cattle herd. From feeding calves to milking cows, she was a steward of animal care and loved her family and dairy farm fiercely.

She was a Junior member of the Brown Swiss Cattle Breeders’ Association and a member of Venango County 4-H Teen Council, Canal Ag, Milkmasters, Crawford County Jr. Holstein Club, Dairy Quiz Bowl Team, Dairy Miss with the Dairy Princess Program, former Franklin YMCA Starburst Gymnastics from 2nd grade - 2020 and Sugarcreek United Methodist Church. She was in the tenth-grade class of Franklin High School where she competed for the pole vault team for track and field. Additionally, she was Secretary of Class of 2025 Student Council and was part of the Yearbook Publication Staff.

Maddie enjoyed deer hunting with her Uncle Brad and cousins, as well as hanging out with her friends. She also enjoyed many shopping trips with her grammy and mom.

Left to cherish her memory are her parents and her brother, Kyle R. Johnson. She is additionally survived by her grandparents, Robert and Debra Deeter of Utica and Dave and Rona Johnson of Meadville; her great-grandfather, Ronald DeWoody of Saegertown; her aunts and uncles, Brad and Brittany Deeter of Cochranton and Eric and Michelle Johnson of Erie; and her cousins, Brandon, Brynlee, Brendall, Alexis, and Bryson.

Maddie is preceded in death by her great-grandparents, Rose and Wayne Deeter, Sarah DeWoody, and Isabelle and Robert Johnson; great-aunt, Diane Deeter; and great-uncle, Paul Deeter.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Maddie’s memory to the Maddie Johnson Memorial Fund c/o Venango County Fair Grounds, 867 Mercer Road, Franklin, PA 16323.
