Here in Nebraska, there are great opportunities to find some great Angus genetics. By the time this issue of Nebraska Angus News hits mailboxes the sale season will be nearly six weeks old.

You can check out sale reports at www.angus.org and also on page 34 in this issue. As for upcoming sales, check out our website www.nebraskaangus.org and also on page 42in this issue. There are over 40 sales in March!!!

The Nebraska Angus Board of Directors is pleased to announce they are able to offer scholarship dollars in a onetime scholarship program partnering with Zoetis, to college age Angus producers.

Last summer, Zoetis and the Nebraska Angus Association entered into an agreement to promote a i50K rebate program, where Zoetis would return $1-$3 return per DNA test run during June 1 to August 31, to Nebraska. The money earned was to be used as in scholarship or education programs. The scholarship rules can be found on page 25 and the scholarship form on page 26. These are also available on our website, on the home page. Application deadline is April 15, 2016. A total of $800 is available and a scholarship selection committee will determine the selection and number of recipients and dollars for each winner. It could be one $800 scholarship, four $200 scholarships or any combination the selection committee deems appropriate based on applicants.

The scholarship funds are available to current college students enrolled in a 2 year or 4 year college or trade school program in their second or third or fourth year of study.

This is shaping up to be an exciting year as Nebraska and our co-host state South Dakota team up to host the 2016 Junior National Angus Show in Grand Island July 3-9th. There are many opportunities for Nebraska breeders to be a part of this great event. One way will be to be a part of our Annual directory. We’ll have this publica-

tion available during the national junior show. To be listed in this book, 2016 membership dues must be paid by May 15th, 2016. If you’d like to place an ad in the directory, ad space reservations are also due May 15th and final ad copy will be due by June 1st.

There will be no wiggle room in these dates!! We need this additional lead time to get the book properly assembled and back from the printer by July 1st.

In this issue is an article on our current Nebraska Angus Queen, Savannah Schafer. She is a hard working, talented, determined and outgoing young lady. She has taken her role as Queen seriously as she is our Angus Association Ambassador for our state. She has a dream job in mind following college and her role as Queen fits a part of that job. Check out her story on page 30.

Watch our website for upcoming information on our Annual Angus Tour to be held in the North Central region. Our North Director Dave Nichols is wrangling this year’s event and planning is currently underway for an outstanding tour. As soon as more details are available, they will be listed on our website.

Dear Membership, Greetings and Happy New Year from my desk in good old Clinton, Nebraska. The start to 2016 has been a fast and furious one at our ranch as I am sure it has for you all as well.

Stock shows, production sales and family sporting events keep the tires rolling and miles racking up on the vehicles. Thank goodness for cheaper fuel prices although I am sure we would all pay a little more at the pump if our commodities price structure would improve. It looks like so far to date, production sales are holding on to near last year’s prices and I have been told of a few that are even better. Demand for top notch Angus genetics continues to be the envy of other breeds as our registrations continue to dominate them all.

In traveling and spending nine full days at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, I visited with numerous people and I think the attitudes were in the “decent” category.

The demand for top notch Angus genetics was evident in the yards and on the hill as the sales and crowd attendance was reported as record breaking. The weather was decent and that sure helps as well.

With the Cattlemen’s Classic and upcoming production sales approaching quickly, I would like to wish everyone good luck! I also hope for outstanding weather and great turnouts for all events because this time of year can get interesting for sure. As I write this I am also happy to report Punxsutawney Phil predicts

Nebraska Angus Association an early spring so I am thankful. Elections and caucus, I won’t even go there!!!

In closing I would like to take this opportunity to thank all who voted for me to lead our organization for the next fiscal year. I hope all of the membership continues to support our group, as we are a non-profit group and all of us on the board and in offices, as well as our Sec/Mgr are here to help promote the Angus breed but most importantly all of our top-notch NEBRASKA breeders!! Our annual banquet was a huge success this year and I hope the momentum continues throughout the year with all of our activities .

Squish, squoosh, brrrr! This winter has certainly been the muddiest! Our barnyard has been muddy since early December and the wind continues to blow. The blizzard on Groundhog’s Day will certainly be remembered for incredible amounts of snow! We were fortunate to receive just a few inches but were thinking of those who were hardest hit. I also want to send a “tasty” thank you to Dick Hollman and the Nebraska Angus Association for competing in the Nebraska Cattlemen’s first Battle of the Breeds during the Classic! As I’m writing this early and the contest has yet to be held, the Angus steaks just had to be delicious and award winning!

Now, my Angus family, we need to discuss the National Junior Angus Show. Nebraska, along with South Dakota, is planning on hosting the most memorable National Show yet! All eyes will be watching! The Nebraska Angus Association and the Nebraska Junior Angus Association combined equals one strong and mighty force but every member is needed. Now is the time for all members to join the effort to organize this great event! An army of members and volunteers is needed for the National Show to be a huge success! Please look through the list of committees and choose one that you feel comfortable joining. A View from the Top…

S

ince 1906, the National Western Stock Show has served as the meeting place between commercial cattlemen and their Angus seedstock providers. For the American Angus Association, the celebrated weeklong event is filled with shows and sales. The week allows our members the opportunity to showcase their genetics to cattlemen across the country. I can’t think of any better place for cattlemen to philosophize about the cattle business other than Denver, Colo., in January.

After celebrating 110 years of western heritage, a new dawn is rising for the city of Denver and the National Western with a projected $1-billion project — the new National Western Complex. A majority of the funds for the project comes from extending the lodging and car rental taxes in the county of Denver. The project will give ex-

hibitors, vendors and spectators a new venue to last the next 100-150 years. The construction will happen during the next several years and will be broken into three phases: Phase 1: The historic stockyards will be completely new and will grow to 20 acres in size, which is 30% growth in that area along the South Platte River. A new Event Pavilion in the Yards will be the home for the pen and carload shows. The addition of new drives, streets and bridges will be completed during this period. The targeted completion date for the stockyards is 2020 to 2021.

Phase 2: A new 230,000-squarefoot (sq. ft.) livestock center will be constructed, providing a 30% larger venue for cattle showing on what we would refer to as the Hill.

Don’t worry, the history in the Stadium Arena will be kept intact and will be renovated to celebrate agricultural markets in the state of Colorado. Details are being worked on for a “parade of champions” in the Stadium Arena to keep the tradition of the countless champions selected in that historical building throughout the last century. The Livestock Center will have 2,500 seats with state-of-the-art lighting and sale facilities. Also during this time, the building of the Equine Center will take place. The completion of both centers should take one year or more.

Phase 3: This is the final phase of the project. Although the timeline for all three phases is unknown, the last phase will

encompass a new Trade Show/Exhibition Hall and Rodeo Arena.

The Trade Show will be 450,000 sq. ft. in size, allowing for 200 more industry, clothing and western vendors. The new rodeo arena will hold 10,000 seats with 40 high-rise box stadium suites.

The newly revamped National Western Complex will serve to increase year-round program opportunities for education of food and food production, agriculture and livestock, and water resources.

There are many different masterplan ideas, partners and visions for the new Complex that I encourage everyone to take a longer look at.

It’s expected that the new Complex will bring $250 billion of economic impact a year to the area.

Paul Andrews, CEO and president of NWSS, sums up the future of the new National Western Complex best, “This will be the largest celebration of agriculture in the entire world!”

The future of the National Western will only bridge the gap between our consumers and the agricultural community. For those of us in the business of feeding the world, how could we ask for anything more?

HORMONE BALANCE Successful breeding program begins with understanding hormones and how they affect the estrous cycle.

The dictionary defines the term “hormonal” as being of, relating to or affected by hormones. The reproductive cycle definitely is hormonal. Specific hormones induce the physiologic changes necessary for the establishment of pregnancy in the mammalian female. According to reproductive physiologist Mike Smith, an understanding of hormonal changes occurring in the bovine female can make estrus synchronization and artificial insemination (AI) programs for beef breeding herds more successful.

The University of Missouri professor’s review of the bovine estrous cycle set the stage for subsequent speakers at the Applied Reproductive Strategies in Beef Cattle (ARSBC) conference Aug. 17-18 in Davis, Calif.

Smith said the estrous cycle consists of three stages — the follicular phase, estrus and the luteal phase.

These phases are regulated by the following hormones: • gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) secreted by the hypothalamus; • follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) secreted by the anterior pituitary gland; • estradiol and progesterone secreted by the ovary; and • prostaglandin secreted by the uterus.

“These hormones serve as chemical messengers that travel in the blood to specific target tissues, which contain receptors, and regulate the phases of the estrous cycle,” explained Smith. He elaborated on the specific hormonal changes that must occur during a cow’s estrous cycle for pregnancy 20 • March/April 2016 • Nebraska Angus Association News

“Estrus synchronization protocols have been designed to mimic the physiological changes controlled by these [naturally occurring] hormones,” he continued.

Smith said commercially available progestin products used to manage the luteal phase include melangestrol acetate (MGA), which is administered orally, and the controlled internal drug release (CIDR®) device. Prostaglandin and GnRH are administered by injection. Numerous synchronization protocols that prescribe the timing of product administration and insemination have been developed for heifers and cows (see pages 121 and 122).

According to Smith, it is not uncommon to hear producers blame a particular synchronization product or protocol for poor results. He reminded the audience that all of the commercially available products have been proven effective when properly stored and administered.

Unsatisfactory pregnancy rates can most often be attributed to cows or heifers being unsuitable candidates for synchronization, poor choice of synchronization protocol or noncompliance with the chosen protocol.

“It’s critically important that synchronization products be administered at the correct time and at the correct dosage,” emphasized Smith. “Attention to detail is essential.”

Fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI) protocols work, but attention to detail for use in both heifers and cows is absolutely necessary for success, said David Patterson, professor of animal science at the University of Missouri. At the 2015 Applied Reproductive Strategies in Beef Cattle (ARSBC) symposium in Davis, Calif., this fall, he shared management considerations to improve the success rates of these protocols.

61% of calves were born by Day 21 in the calving season, 85% by Day 42, and 94% by Day 63.

Heifers that conceive earlier during their first breeding season stay in the herd longer and produce more pounds of beef over their lifetime, so it’s important to set them up for success, Patterson noted. Management considerations include health, prebreeding evaluation, estrus synchronization, and sire selection, but he emphasized prebreeding evaluation the most.

Target weight, reproductive tract scores (RTS) and pelvic measurements are some of the most unused tools that could contribute to reproductive success.

RTS range from 1 to 5, with 4 and 5 being the most mature reproductive tracts. Patterson recommended that an RTS be collected four to six weeks before breeding or two weeks before synchronization. Additionally, synchronization should not be done until at least 50% of heifers have an RTS of 4 or 5. Data from the Show-Me-Select Replacement™ Heifer Program indicate FTAI pregnancy rates dramatically improve with higher RTS, showing RTS 1 with 8% pregnancy rate, RTS 2 with 32%, RTS 3 with 46%, RTS 4 with 49%, and RTS 5 with 52%.

In choosing a protocol for FTAI in heifers, he suggested considering pretreatment estrous cyclicity status and reiterated performing an RTS four to six weeks before breeding. Protocol compliance — product administration and timing of insemination — determines success.

In cows, when considering a choice between the five-day and seven-day protocols (see Fig. 1), he shared that both protocols work effectively in postpartum beef cows with evidence of up to a 3% advantage to the five-day protocol. However, he warned that cattlemen should consider the increased labor and treatment costs associated with the five-day protocol.

One of the advantages of using FTAI among cows is that it tends to jump-start cycling of cows that 22 • March/April 2016 • Nebraska Angus Association News

are anestrous, or have not yet expressed estrus after calving. Patterson shared data revealing a 72% pregnancy rate to FTAI among cows that had expressed estrus and a 49% pregnancy rate among cows that had not expressed estrus.

This data led to a research project to delay AI after GnRH of females that do not express estrus prior to FTAI. Intended to optimize fertility by better aligning the window of sperm fertility to ovulation, this management strategy is called split-time AI. The researchers evaluated the technique using both conventional and sexsorted sperm, as well as cows and heifers (see Figs. 2 and 3).

Split-time AI increased pregnancy rates by 34% among non-estrous cows inseminated with sex-sorted semen. When using conventional semen, Patterson explained that it worked better in heifers than in cows. Split-time AI increased pregnancy rates by 15% among non-estrous heifers using conventional semen. There was no significant improvement in pregnancy rates with split-time AI using conventional semen in nonestrous cows.

In cows, the delayed administration of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) increased total estrous response by 5%, but there was no improvement in pregnancy rate, he shared.

It is not necessary to administer GnRH to heifers or cows that express estrus prior to 66 hours, using the 14-day CIDR-PG in heifers and the seven-day COSynch + CIDR in cows. He added that GnRH could be administered concurrently with AI at 90 hours for heifers or cows that fail to express estrus prior to 66 hours. This results in a greater overall estrous response in cows.

PLANNING ASSISTANCE Improve protocol compliance with Estrus Synchronization Planner.

Choosing and executing a program for synchronized artificial insemination (AI) can be easier with a tool called the Estrus Synchronization Planner (ESP). Speaking during the Applied Reproductive Strategies in Beef Cattle Symposium (ARSBC) in Davis, Calif., Kansas State University animal scientist Sandy Johnson said a majority of ESP tool adopters have called it a user-friendly way to plan and schedule implementation of estrus synchronization protocols.

The computer program was developed by Iowa State University and includes a list of recommended synchronization protocols.

According to Johnson, even computer-challenged users can navigate their way through a process of selecting an appropriate synchronization protocol for cows or heifers, utilizing heat detection, fixed-time AI or a combination.

When users enter the day and time they want to begin breeding, the planner calculates the precise day and hour that each protocol treatment, including correct dosages of products, should be administered. The information is then placed on a printable calendar.

Johnson said up to three different protocols can be compared for cost analysis at a time. A cost per synchronized female for each system is based on expected concep24 • March/April 2016 • Nebraska Angus Association News

tion and estrous response rates.

“Along with other costs, it will estimate the number of labor hours required, based on the protocol you select, which is useful if you are breeding females for others and need to calculate appropriate charges,” added Johnson.

The planner can be downloaded, free of charge, from the Iowa Beef Center website, www.iowabeefcenter.org/estrus_s ynch.html.

“Users are asked to register so they can receive notices of updates to the program,” explained Johnson.

The ESP has also been adapted for use with mobile handheld devices.

The mobile version is not downloadable but can be used online wherever cell service is available.

The mobile version includes the most critical features, but lacks a few aspects of the full version, such as the printable calendar.

“Producers tell me that ESP is easy-to-use. It helped direct them to the most appropriate protocols and reduced errors in implementation,” added Johnson.

Nebraska Angus Association to Award Scholarships to Young Angus Producers

Application deadline is April 15, 2016 The Nebraska Angus Association (NAA) Board of Directors are excited to announce that the NAA will award $800 in scholarship funds to young college-age (already enrolled and attending a 2 or 4 year college or technical school) Nebraska Angus producer. The number of scholarships and funding level for each scholarship will be determined by the selection committee.

The scholarships are made possible through Nebraska breeders utilizing Zoetis HD50K tests during Zoetis’s annual state association program, (test purchased through Angus Genetics, Inc., June 1-Aug. 31, 2015).

The scholarship winner(s) will be announced during the NJAA Junior Preview Show Annual Banquet on May 28, 2016 in Broken Bow. The application deadline is April 15, 2016, applicants will be required to submit an application and essay. The application is also posted on www.nebraskaangus.org.

Nebraska Angus Queen Spotlight Nebraska’s Angus Queen Is A “Can Do Kid”

The 2015-2016 Nebraska Angus Queen, Savannah Schafer, comes from a small but mighty family.

Being an only child, the nineteenyear old daughter of Craig and Stephanie Schafer learned the value of hard work at an early age.

She grew up on their fourth-generation Angus farm near Nehawka, which is located halfway between Weeping Water and Murray off of Nebraska Highway 1. Savannah credits her parents for being great role models and teaching her to always have a “good work ethic”. Her father, Craig runs their family farm, raising diversified crops and an Angus herd with only Savannah and her mom as the “hired help”.

Her mother is an early childhood teacher at Weeping Water Public Schools.

Having a parent as a teacher instilled a strong educational foundation for Savannah. Her elementary years were spent attending a Class 1 school through 3rd grade. Her mom was the teacher for grades Kindergarten through 2nd.

Stephanie calls her students “CanDo Kids’ because she teaches them that they can do anything anyone asks of them.

During her school years, Savannah discovered that her favorite classes were hands-on learning classes such as Introduction to Animal Science, Horticulture, Floriculture, and Biology. Classes and activities that related to everyday life or living on the farm really spiked her educational interest. She was active in her local FFA chapter and held several leadership offices. Savannah earned her State Degree and has set a goal of 30 • March/April 2016 • Nebraska Angus Association News

earning her American Degree this coming summer.

As a “Can Do Kid”, Savannah has set many goals in life. One goal is to be selected to represent Nebraska and its’ Angus Association members as Nebraska Angus Queen. As a member of the Nebraska Junior Angus Association, Savannah noticed that the queens were always helpful,

friendly, and knowledgeable. The older girls were absolutely wonderful, allowing her to tag along, be part of the group, and always encouraging the younger girl. Being an only child, Savannah truly cherished the time spent with the older members and decided this role would allow her to “pay it forward” by providing her an opportunity to be a positive role model for the younger members. She enjoys the younger members and always wants to hear what they have to say or are thinking. Savannah sees the role of Queen as that of being an ambassador for the Angus breeders of

Nebraska.

As the Nebraska Angus Queen, Savannah’s top two objectives are developing friendships with queens from various states as she attends different national shows and sharing information about the Angus breed and agriculture. Savannah has visited several classrooms and shared books about agriculture and livestock with students.

This is an activity she plans to continue during her reign. Savannah is often amazed to learn what kids think and believe. On one occasion while visiting a classroom, a student told her that pink milk comes from pink cows. This provided a great opportunity to teach about agriculture and the food process.

Savannah is looking forward to attending Angus sales and different events throughout the spring. While this isn’t one of her “required duties”, she knows Nebraska breeders will appreciate having the Nebraska Angus Queen attending sales when her college schedule permits.

Official Queen duties include handing out ribbons and awards at the Nebraska State Fair, Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic, and at the Nebraska Junior Angus State Shows.

Her duties also extend beyond Nebraska’s borders. She has handed out ribbons with other state queens and the 2015-2016 Miss American Angus at the American

Royal in October. In January, she attended the 2016 National Western Stock Show where she handed out ribbons for the Junior Heifer Show and spent several hours getting to know the Kansas Angus Ambassador, the Kansas Angus Queen, and our new 2016-2017 Miss American Angus.

Savannah has been an active Nebraska Junior Angus member, both on the state level as well as the national scene. Nationally, she has competed in quiz bowl, livestock judging, mentoring, beef cook-off, photography, carcass steer, and extemporaneous speaking events. Savannah’s family and her Angus calves have traveled to nine National Junior Angus Shows. She has attended several Raising the Bar as well as LEAD conferences and is eagerly planning on attending both conferences in 2016. Savannah has held the offices of Director and President; and she has served on numerous committees over the years.

She was the co-chairman for the Junior Winter Preview Show hosted by the Nebraska Jr. Angus Association for one year and she currently is serving as Junior Co-chair for the hospitality committee during the 2016 National Junior Angus Show in Grand Island, Nebraska.

As a Junior Angus member, Savannah has set her sights on future achievements. These goals include placing in the

top five in National Showmanship, running for the National Board of Directors, earning her Gold Award, setting an example for younger members, and continuing to promote the Angus breed whenever possible. Ambassador, advocate, role model, director, teacher –- all characteristics that can describe this year’s Nebraska Angus Queen that fall in line with her chosen field of study. Savannah is currently a freshman at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, with a declared major in Agricultural Education and minor in Animal Science and Agricultural Business.

Her dream job upon graduation would be to visit Nebraska schools to educate the student population about agriculture and the beef industry. It’s a career choice that would allow her to be a qualified and educated advocate to decrease the gap between consumers and producers.

Now that she’s reached a goal of being Nebraska Angus Queen, Savannah offers this advice to future Nebraska Angus Queen candidates: “Believe in your skills and have fun”. The interview and speech sections are tough but being prepared will lead to success. The experience will build your leadership and public speaking skills. The events you attend and the people you meet will provide an awesome experience. Representing the Angus breed at every opportunity will be something you will enjoy. Just be yourself, be honest, be respectful, and be professional. Be a “Can Do Kid”.

HOW LOW IS TOO LOW WHEN SELECTING LOW BIRTH WEIGHT BULLS?

Whitman, NE - An interesting question came up when a panel of seedstock producers took the stage during an open house at the University of Nebraska Gudmundsen Research facility in Whitman, Neb. A producer from the audience wanted to know if he selects bulls for lower birth weights, is he short-changing himself?

There has been a lot of buzz around the industry lately about how low is too low when selecting bulls for birth weight. No one wants to pull a calf, but is there a point where selecting a bull for too low of a birth weight is going too extreme?

The panelists seem to think so.

Jerry Connealy of Connealy Angus in Whitman, Neb., reminds producers that birth weight and yearling weight are highly correlated traits. “When generations upon generations spread bulls with heavy birth weight or light birth weight stacked upon each other, we have defeated those antagonisms,” he says. “That correlation is still real, and it’s still there. In the Angus breed, we have conquered a lot of that. I wouldn't recommend to anyone stacking light birth weight on top of light birth weight. Piling negative upon negative, you will eventually get a finer boned, frailer calf that will be a less rugged animal in the end,” he added.

Loren Berger of Berger's Herdmasters in North Platte says producers should select bulls for birth weight based on what their end point is for their cattle. “I visited several feedlots who wanted to feed my cattle, and they all told me they want to take the Continental cross cattle to 1,450 to 1,500 pounds,” he says. “Most 65 pound birth weight calves will struggle to get to that, and still have an acceptable yield grade.”

Berger sees producers who are concerned about birth weight making some adjustments in their herd. “I think those producers need to separate the cows from the heifers. A cow can give birth to a heavier calf, and have the calf get up and nurse right away, and do all this in a harsh environment. If these cows are limited to giving birth to a 65 pound calf, in my mind, that calf is a loss. I think 85-90 pounds may be more ideal in most situations,” he explains. “I feel most producers are making a big sacrifice if they take low birth weight to the extreme in the mature cows.”

Connealy says too light a calf can also have more health issues. “There is certainly some buzz out there that short gestation calves have less developed lungs, causing us to see 36 • March/April 2016 • Nebraska Angus Association News

more sickness and other negative ramifications,” he says. “In this industry, we are guilty of being plungers. We can't moderate,” Connealy continues. “We think if a lighter calf is good, then an even lighter one is better. We have to stop somewhere. I think we are pushing that more than we need to. A cow can have a calf that weights 85-90 pounds, and we can still use the natural correlation between birth weight and yearling weight to our advantage. Heifer bulls need to be used as heifer bulls, even if we don't like to pull calves,” he states.

Despite a trend toward lighter birth weight calves, the panelists still see cow size continuing to climb. “I see cow size continuing to increase as an industry,” Connealy says. “In the Angus industry, and particularly in our own business, we are struggling to hold cow size, and even decrease it from what it was in the 80s, when we were selecting those taller frame bulls,” he explains.

As an industry, these panelists see cow size continuing to increase unless there is a joint effort to select replacement heifers that aren't on top

or even at the higher middle end for size. “We need to select the smaller heifers,” Connealy -says. “It is easy to say, but when you are standing out there selecting your replacements, it is very hard to do.”

Panel moderator, Matt Spangler, points out conversations he has had with ranchers looking to decrease the size of their cows. “A lot of the time, I talk to the rancher who wants to moderate his cowherd, and walk him through what he needs to buy for a bull. Then, at load out, I see him loading up the highest growth, heaviest muscled bull on the sale. The problem is in part what these guys put on offer, but it is also having the discipline to go to the sale and say 'I may buy the bull that is below the breed average for milk, or above the breed average for birth weight, because I plan to use him for my cows'.”

“In the end, the key is having the discipline to buy what you truly need,” Spangler tells the audience.

“That is what will have the most tremendous impact on where we go from here with cow size.”

NICOLE NICHOLS EARNS JUNIOR BRONZE AND SILVER AWARDS Nicole Nichols, Chambers, Neb., has earned the National Junior Angus Association’s (NJAA) Bronze and Silver awards, according to Jaclyn Upperman, education and events director of the American Angus Association® in Saint Joseph, Mo. The 13-year-old daughter of David and Lynn Nichols attends Chamber Public School and is a member of the NJAA and the Nebraska Junior Angus Association.

She has participated in state, regional and national shows and showmanship contests. At the National Junior Angus Show (NJAS), Nicole participated in poster, livestock judging, graphic design, creative writing and photography contests. In 2014 she participated in the mentoring program.

She has submitted weight data to the Angus Herd Improvement Records (AHIR®) and consigned cattle at the Nichols & Sons Angus Sale.

Nicole is also involved with her local 4-H chapter.

The Bronze and Silver awards are the first two levels of the NJAA Recognition Program that began in 1972.

Junior Angus breeders must apply for the awards, then meet point requirements in many areas of participation before receiving the honors. Applicants are evaluated in areas of junior Angus association activities and leadership, participation in showmanship, contests and shows, using performance testing to improve their herd and their progress in producing and merchandising Angus cattle.

The NJAA promotes the involvement of young people in raising Angus cattle, while also providing leadership and self-development opportunities for the nearly 6,000 active members nationwide.

ANGUS ASSOCIATION IMPLEMENTS BYLAW CHANGES Nomination period begins April 11, reflects member-passed amendments to electoral process American Angus Association® members will now notice a change in voting eligibility following bylaw amendments passed at the American Angus Association 2015 Annual Convention of Delegates last November.

During that meeting, Association voting delegates passed three amendments to the bylaws that affect who can serve as an “eligible voting member” and the timing of the nomination period.

Eligible voting members are those who are able to nominate, be nominated, vote or be elected in the annual election of delegates. To be considered an eligible voting member and participate in the election process, individuals must meet all of the following requirements within the preceding 12 months from when the nomination period begins: • Active regular or life membership • 18 years of age or older • Registered at least one animal or completed a minimum level of business with the Association or Angus Genetics Inc. (the dollar amount specified by the Board of Directors is $250, exclusive of membership fees, merchandise or other exclusions) The nomination period for 2016 begins April 11; therefore, above criteria must be met by the end of the previous business day, Friday, April 8, to participate in the 2016 delegate process, according to Chris Stallo, vice president of operations.

trative assistant, also explains delegates amended the nomination period to take place in 60 days versus the previous 90 days, and to begin no later than 210 days and end no later than 150 days before the Annual Convention of Delegates.

“These changes passed by the delegates will help to ensure voting members have a vested interest in the Angus business and will also allow staff to conduct the ballot process in a timely fashion prior to the meeting at the National Angus Convention,” Stallo said.
