50 years. A monumental milestone for the Angus breed. 150 years ago, Angus cattle first arrived in the United States. According to the American Angus Association, George Grant settled in Victoria, Kansas, in 1873 with four Angus bulls from Scotland. For Nebraska, it wasn’t long after that Angus started making its mark. In 1900, Eugene B. Laflin purchased his first Angus cattle for his family’s operation and today the operation remains as one of the oldest continuous Angus herds in the United States. Eugene was one of the first breeders of registered Angus cattle in Nebraska and his early dedication to turn the west “black” set the stage for generations committed to the Angus breed. Today this Angus legacy is continued in Olsburg, Kansas, and Crab Orchard, Nebraska.

To start the 150th year celebration, the Angus Foundation held a celebration on January 6th in Oklahoma City during the Cattlemen’s Congress. During this celebration nearly $20,000 was raised to support the Foundation’s mission. A solid foundation for the Angus breed has been proven and continues to grow. The Nebraska Angus Association is proud to have our state be a part of this monumental milestone and we are excited to help celebrate through educational and promotional programs. 150 years later, the Angus breed continues to be the leader in all cattle production, and it is because of you, the committed Angus registered and commercial producers. The Nebraska Angus Association is here to help promote your operation, provide education of the Angus breed, and represent our beef state. I

hope you’re all losing some snow by the time you are reading this, and the ground has hardened up.

Since we have around 400 cows due around that time, my prediction is mud…which for once I’ll be thankful for. This drought has been challenging but good times are on the horizon for the industry.

This spring, I would encourage you all to try to get out and support the production sales happening statewide. There’s a handy list that was mailed out in December and it’s also available on our website.

Whether you plan to buy cattle or not, adding to the crowd is always helpful and appreciated by those hosting the day. There are few things worse for a sale host than to look out at empty bleachers or to pack up a bunch of leftover food at the end of the day. The energy of a crowd can make or break their day. You never know what deals you might find or what you might learn for your breeding program or for your own sale by attending.

Regarding attendance, the state of Nebraska was well represented at the National Western Stock Show (NWSS). Krebs Ranch exhibited Champion Carload as well as the Champion Pen of Three bulls. Several NE Angus lots highlighted the Foundation Female and the Females on the Front Range sales. My congratulations to all. In short, the Yards at the NWSS are back and open for business. As someone for whom the first trip to the Yards was like a trip to the Grand Canyon, it’s great to have them back. The facility is one of the most unique and technologically advanced show and sale arenas in the country. The staff are exhibitor

friendly, and I highly recommend a trip to Denver in 2024.

As I write this I’m also working on footnotes and the sale letter for our catalog. Every year as I work on it, I wonder how many people will read them. Every animal that we offer has a story and I find that to be part of the fun of raising seedstock but I might be the only one. That leads me to the question, Do you as breeders and buyers like to read the footnotes? Are they relevant to your decision or should we just stick to the black and white information?

I guess I’ll just keep on writing and hope that they’ll be read. If you’d like to drop me a line or give me a call to discuss, I’d be interested in hearing your opinions.

Finally, I ask that you keep Clint and Suzy Hebbert of E D Angus in your prayers. Clint has been fighting a battle with cancer for several years and has decided to stop further treatment. Suzy served this association for over 10 years and has meant a lot to our organization along with Clint. May God bless them both and bless you all.

YOU ALL ARE INVITED! There will be several activities throughout the year for the auxiliary. Feel free to join us! Plans are in the works to attend the junior shows and we would like to remind everyone that junior Nationals are in Grand Island this year hosted by the National Junior Angus Association. Mark your calendars for the American Angus Auxiliary meeting on July 5th. Our other activities for the year will be State Fair, Husker Harvest Days, and the Angus Tour.

'm sure you all have been keeping busy this winter with the freezing cold and snow. The juniors have kept busy also and the months ahead of us are going to be just as busy. We will start off our summer with our state show on June 2-4 in Broken Bow, Nebraska. Early entries along with the ownership deadline are set for May 15th. Also, Phenotype and Genotype (PGS) entries need to be received by the 15 of May, as we will not be accepting late PGS entries. There have also been some changes made to the PGS show. To enter the PGS, all animals must be genomic tested (either Angus GS™ or HD50K for Angus) with a DNA sample on file with Angus Genetics Incorporated (AGI), by the ownership deadline for both the NeJAS and NJAS. The 2023 National Junior Angus Show will be held in Grand Island, Nebraska from July 1st through the 8th. Early entries and ownership deadlines are set for May 15. 2023 Nebraska Jr. Angus Show June 2-4, 2023 Fairgrounds – Broken Bow, Nebraska May begin arriving anytime on Friday, June 3, 2021 Cattle Check-in: Saturday from 9-noon (cattle must be on the grounds and checked in by noon) National Team Contests Saturday afternoon (fitting, sales, quiz bowl) Junior Meeting Saturday Afternoon Family Picnic on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Show Begins Sunday, June 4, 2023 at 9:00 a.m.

Early Entries & Early Entry Fees due May 20, 2023 The Nebraska Junior Angus Show is a “No Fit” show defined as exhibitors may NOT use glue, adhesive, foam, coloring or paint products. Oils and “Kleen Sheen” type products are allowed. No stomach pumping or artificial fillers allowed.

A.ELIGIBILITY OF EXHIBITORS AND ENTRIES 1. Exhibitors must be members of the NeJAA and must be between the ages of 8-21 as of January 1 of the current year. Junior membership shall be issued only to an individual and shall expire upon attainment of age 21. Participation is acceptable through the calendar year of the individual’s 21st birthday.

2. Animals must be registered in the name of the exhibitor.

3. Eligibility of entries will be determined by age and the National Junior Angus Association show classification.

4. Exhibitors in the bred-and-owned categories must be the breeder and first and continuous owner of the animal entered.

5. Exhibitors may show up to six entries in the owned heifer category and up to four entries in the steer category. They may also show as many bred-and-owned bulls, bred-and-owned heifers, and cow-calf pairs as they wish.

6. Must present original certificate or electronic registration at check-in. All tattoos must be legible.

7. The show will be blow and go.

8. The ownership deadline for the State Angus Show shall coincide with the National Junior Angus Show, May 15th, 2023.

B. CLASSES 1.The classes will be the same as recommended by the National Junior Angus Association. There will be classes for bred-and-owned heifers, bred-and owned bulls, owned heifers, phenotype/genotype heifers, registered steers, cow/calf pairs, and predominantly black hided crossbred steers and heifers. There must be at least 5 or more head to have a separate bred and owned division.

2.There will be an additional class for best pair of heifers. Both heifers must be shown by the same exhibitor on show day to qualify as a pair.

3.There will be a Supreme Champion selected from the Champion owned heifer, bred-and-owned heifer, cow-calf pair, and bull.

C. SHOWMANSHIP 1.Showmanship classes will be divided according to age as of January 1 of the current year following the National Junior Angus Association’s age divisions for contests. The Junior Division: 13 and under, Intermediate Division: 14-17, and Senior Division: 18-21. To be eligible for showmanship contests, partic ipants must be exhibiting an animal at the show.

Unless otherwise stated, National Junior Angus Show rules apply.

PARTICIPATING IN NATIONAL SHOWMANSHIP CLASS: Two contestants will be selected to represent Nebraska at the National Junior Angus Show from a specified NJAS showmanship class at the State Junior Show. To represent Nebraska at the National Showmanship contest, the exhibitor must be a Junior or Life Member of the Nebraska and American Angus Association, an active member of the Nebraska Junior Angus Association. All fees must be paid before entering the contest. Contestants by entering agree to abide by the NeJAA and NJAA rules. Contestant’s birth date must be from Jan 1, 2001 through Dec 31, 2007.

•Active Member being defined as having participated in state, regional, or national Angus shows/activities in one of the past two years, current year excluded.

Nebraska Angus Queen Spotlight N EBRASKA A NGUS Q UEEN Kacey Dethlefs The Nebraska Angus Association would like to introduce to you our 2023 Miss Nebraska Angus Queen, Kacey Dethelfs. Kacey was born in North Platte, Nebraska, and spent the majority of her childhood there until her family moved back to Ravenna, Nebraska in 2016 for her to attend high school and help on the Dethlefs Angus Ranch. She is the daughter of Craig and Laurie Dethelfs and has two older sisters, Aliesha Meusch who is married to Brad with daughter Etta, and Emily Johnson who is married to Ben. When asked what made her decide to try and become the next Nebraska Angus Queen she replied with “I became interested in being the Nebraska Angus Queen when I saw all the connections and networking it provides for the Nebraska Angus Association and for my personal gains”.

Kacey’s path in the Angus business started when she was really little and got her first heifer to start her herd. From there, she is following in her family’s legacy of raising and showing Angus cattle.

Kacey has been a part of the Nebraska and national Angus Associations ever since she was able to by attending shows and competing in contests. She has also been an active member in 4H and FFA. Aside from cattle, Kacey was a member of the Ravenna cross country and track team where she had great success. Currently, Kacey is a member of Block and Bridle, the Nebraska Industry Beef Scholars 16 • Nebraska Angus Association News • Spring Issue • 2023

program, and Engler at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

When asked what has been her favorite part of being Queen so far, Kacey re-

Kacey’s biggest goals to stay involved in the Angus industry include growing her herd and networking with Angus breeders and establishing a relationship with them to further promote Angus in the industry. Kacey currently is a sophomore attending the University of NebraskaLincoln studying Animal Science with minors in Engler and the Nebraska Beef Scholars.

After graduation she plans to help her dad continue the legacy of the Dethlefs Angus Ranch and work in reproduction in the beef industry.

Nebraska Angus Princess Spotlight N EBRASKA A NGUS P RINCESS Brianna Brown

For the first time in history the Nebraska Angus Association we would like to introduce to you our Miss Nebraska Angus Princess, Brianna Brown. Brianna resides near Pleasanton, Nebraska on the Schulte family farm. The Schulte family have been farming in the area for over 100 years. She loves living on the farm near her grandparents Robert and Darleen Schulte. Brianna currently is a 7th grader and is the daughter of Tony and Lisa Brown (Schulte) and is the oldest of four siblings, Eva (10), Jazmine (8) and Markus (6).

Brianna was first introduced to the Angus breed and Angus family by her uncle Jeremy Schulte. She loved spending her weekends and summers checking the cattle in the pastures with her uncle Jeremy. Brianna joked that her mom would bribe her with the reward of getting to go check cattle if she got her chores done.

By spending time with her uncle Jeremy, she learned a lot about the Angus breed. She stated “He has taught me about the importance of quality genetics as he would AI within our herd and I learned what signs to look for when it was calving time”. Riding through the fields checking on the new calves was always fun to Brianna and she thoroughly enjoyed watching her cousins Mathias and Braden show cattle growing up. “I loved going to shows and spending time with their family. As I grew older, I started taking bucket calves as a clover kid in 4H and worked my way up to showing everything from steers to heifers and even bulls. I can’t imagine my life without cattle”.

Brianna has been a part of several activities so far. One activity she has taken part in her whole life has been attending her church. She enjoys playing piano and percussion instruments and has been involved in 4-H, FFA, and of course showing cattle.

She also plays on a competitive traveling soccer and basketball team.

When asked what made her decide to try and become the first Nebraska Angus Princess she replied with “As I attended the different cattle shows I would see the Angus queens helping in the ring and promoting the love of Angus cattle. I always knew that I would one day hope to become an 18 • Nebraska Angus Association News • Spring Issue • 2023

Angus queen so that I could share my love of Angus with others. When the announcement came that they would be adding an Angus Princess I knew this was something that I wanted to be a part of. It was my chance to help promote and share my love of Angus at an early age

with more people”.

So far as the princess Brianna has been able to help at the Nebraska Junior Angus Winter Show and plan for this year’s events. When asked what her favorite part of being princess has been she said “So far, my favorite part has been helping young kids show

during the pee wee showmanship at the winter show. I look forward to more opportunities this year as we celebrate 150 years of Angus to teach students and the communities about the importance of the Angus breed and the cattle industry.” She also commented her advice to any girl looking to be the next Nebraska Angus Princess “My advice is to be confident.

Surround yourself with people who build you up. My aunt Stacy is another person who is always helping me to be more confident in myself. The support of others is so important. It takes a team not only on show days but on the days in between. I would also tell you to learn as much as you can about the breed so that you can share with others why Angus is the business breed”.

The Angus breed as you can see is a huge passion of Brianna’s and she has set goals for herself.

Her biggest goal is to run for the NJAA board. She has set stepping stones for herself to reach that goal by becoming more involved in the Nebraska Junior Angus board and to learn ideas from others that have more experience. Her final comment for her future goals was “As Angus Princess I hope to make connections with others so that I can continue to learn more about how to represent the Angus breed. When I become old enough, I would like to run for the Angus Queen. My future plan is to attend college and study animal science. I one day hope to work in the cattle industry both as a producer and owner and as an animal nutritionist”.

Nebraska Champions Grand Champion Carload of Bulls:

Krebs Ranch, Gordon, Neb., won grand champion carload of bulls at the 2023 National Western Stock Show's Angus Pen and Carload Show, Jan. 15 in Denver, Colo. Tucker Stagemeyer earns Junior Bronze and Silver Awards Tucker Stagemeyer, Page, Neb., has earned the National Junior Angus Association’s (NJAA) Bronze and Silver awards, according to Caitlyn Brandt, events and junior activities director of the American Angus Association® in Saint Joseph, Mo. Stagemeyer is the 18-year-old son of Brent and Carla Stagemeyer and attends O’Neill High School. He is a member of the NJAA and the Nebraska Junior Angus Association, where he has served as director and vice president.

He has participated in state and national shows and showmanship contests. At the National Junior Angus Show (NJAS), Stagemeyer participated in the team sales, livestock judging, quiz bowl, photography, public speaking and extemporaneous public speaking contests. In 2021 he served as a voting delegate. He was also a participant in the mentoring program in 2015 and 2016.

Stagemeyer has consigned cattle to the Major League Sale.

The Bronze and Silver awards are the first two levels of the NJAA Recognition Program that began in 1972. Junior Angus breeders must apply for the awards, then meet point requirements in many areas of participation before receiving the honors. onald Sabata “Ron” 81, of Lincoln passed away January 11, 2023. Born May 30, 1941, in David City, NE to Frank and Evangeline (Mazanec) Sabata.

Ron served in the Nebraska Army National Guard for 20 years. He was a realtor for Caldwell Banker and raised registered black angus cattle.

Ron was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, past president of Nebraska Realtor’s Association, served as director for National Realtor’s Association, and was very active in Nebraska Angus Cattle Association.

Family members include his brother Val (Deanna) Sabata and nephew Brian (Sarah) Sabata; sister Marlene (Joe) Rerucha; niece and nephew Jennifer Siefkes and Mark Rerucha.

Rosary took place at 6:30 p.m.

Monday (1-16-23) at Roper and Sons South Lincoln Chapel, 3950 Hohensee Drive.

Mass of Christian Burial was at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday (1-17-23) St. Joseph Catholic Church, 7900 Trendwood Drive.

he Nebraska Angus Association annually offers scholarships to Angus youth. In the past, $1,000 was awarded to winners at the Nebraska Junior Angus State Show.

This year we are proud to announce that the Nebraska Angus Auxiliary will be partnering with this scholarship and we will now be offering $1,250 in scholarship money. The winners will be announced at the Nebraska Junior Angus State Show.

Individuals who have been awarded this scholarship in past years may reapply but no more than $1000 will be awarded to any one individual.

Applicants must be a Nebraska resident, current member of the Nebraska Junior Angus Association and current junior member of the American Angus Association or, if over 21, a former member of both organizations. Applicants must be a graduating high school senior or undergraduate who will be enrolling in a 2 or 4 year post high school educational program in the coming year. Applicant’s parents must be members of the Nebraska Angus Association.

The Angus Foundation awarded more than $318,000 in scholarships in 2022 alone. The Foundation offers scholarships to undergraduate, graduate and trade school students each year to help Angus youth achieve their educational goals and offset the rising costs of tuition.

Applications are due May 1.

“The Angus Foundation’s scholarship program is one of the most prominent and consistent ways our donors support Angus youth,” said Jaclyn Boester, Angus Foundation executive director. “Our scholarships pave the way for a bright future for our industry by ensuring young people have the opportunity to reach their full potential.”

New this year, the Angus Foundation undergraduate and graduate scholarship applications are available to National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) members through their American Angus Association® login, similar to the National Junior Recognition Program Bronze and Silver award applications. The Foundation’s Certified Angus Beef®/National Junior Angus Association and commercial cattlemen scholarships will still be accessed at AngusFoundation.org and submitted through email.

“Angus Foundation scholarships have provided incredible support as I have furthered my education,” said Marcie Harward, National Junior Angus Board Foundation director and past scholarship recipient. “I'm grateful for my involvement in the Angus breed and its investment in the success of juniors like me.”

Undergraduate and Graduate Scholarships Applicants for undergraduate and graduate scholarships must have, at one time, been a member of the NJAA and currently be an active junior, regular or life member of the

Commercial Cattlemen Scholarship The Angus Foundation will award four $1,500 scholarships to undergraduate students who use Angus genetics in a commercial cattle operation’s breeding program or whose parents use Angus genetics. Emphasis will be placed on applicants’ knowledge of the cattle industry and perspective of the Angus breed. The applicant or their parent/guardian must have transferred or been transferred an Angus registration paper in the last 36 months (on or after May 1, 2020) and must be considered commercial and not seedstock in their operation. The scholarship applies to any field of study.

2023 Auxiliary Scholarships Available for Junior Angus Members

T

he American Angus Auxiliary scholarships are presented annually. The total amount awarded will vary. Ten (10) scholarships will be awarded. The exact amount of the first, second, third, fourth and fifth place awards given to both male and female qualified applicants will be determined by May 1, 2023. Scholarships may be defined as financial grants for which no equivalent work is required.

Each state is entitled to submit one girl and one boy application for the national scholarships. The two applications must be submitted by the state or regional scholarship chairperson to the American Angus Auxiliary Scholarship Chairperson. If your state does not have an Auxiliary State/Regional Scholarship Chair, a designated representative from the State/Regional Angus Association, or the State Junior Angus Advisors should submit the completed application. Please con-

tact the American Angus Auxiliary Scholarship Chair with questions.

All scholarship applicants are encouraged to attend the National Junior Angus Show in early July.

The scholarship application is the basis from which the candidates are chosen to compete for Miss American Angus. Each young lady submitting a scholarship application will be required to complete a form declaring her intent to compete/not compete for Miss American Angus if given the opportunity. The five highest placing ladies choosing to compete for Miss American Angus will be announced at the National Junior Show. These ladies will be required to attend the Miss American Angus contest held in November at the Angus Convention. The intent form and additional information on the role and requirements of Miss American Angus will be mailed to each female applicant AFTER her scholarship application is received.

(Please note: choosing not to compete for Miss American Angus does not affect scholarship eligibility.)
