ur recently completed annual meeting and banquet has let me reflect on my journey as Sec/Mgr. When I began my role in January of 2008, we had 165 members.

Today our membership stands at 198 members at the beginning of 2016.

The growth in membership hasn’t happened overnight. We began with a vision to grow our visibility as an Association in the state – meaning that encompasses everything from our roles as a board, as members, our publications and our typesetters who create those publications (Kami and Jessamyn, thanks so much for your contributions to our “vision”). Communications to our members and our public, our activities, our shows and our Junior State Association members too. We ALL have played a role in that growth…we now have a “value” to being a member of our association.

And it started with that “Great Momma Cow”!! Thanks to all of you (past and present) who are the foundation of our success. Let’s keep moving forward.

As part of moving forward… check out our newest columnist on page 16. Regional Manager Jay Nordhausen will be joining our magazine from time to time with his “View From The Top”. Jay has been with our state for 18 months and he is just a great joy to work with. Again, that young, enthusiastic, theme comes through.

2016 will be an exciting year for our Association. Nebraska, along with South Dakota, are hosting the National Junior Angus Show in Grand Island, at the Nebraska State Fairgrounds, July 3-9. The preparation has been underway now for many months, and according to Jake Scott, show chair, our progress is right on schedule. Watch our website, your personal membership newsletters and email updates for ways you will be able to contribute to the success of the show. See page 30 for a look at the print that Falls City artist Amanda Raithel has created to benefit the show. “The Good Life” will be auctioned at the “Angus On The Mountain” event January 13, 2016, during the 2016 NWSS. My congratulations to our Pioneer Producer Award winners that were recognized at the banquet -- Bob and

You can see their photos and read their stories on page 28 & 34. Also recognized during the banquet was the 2015 Nebraska Angus Producer of the Year, Todd and Donalynn Hasenauer of L Bar L Angus of Wallace.

See their story on page 26. Each year, during the presentation of these awards, I think about how much these producers mean to the achievements of Angus cattle breed in our state.

Now it’s time to congratulate our newly elected officers and directors for our Association for the coming year. Vince Bickel will lead our Association as President, and Brock Foxhoven will serve as his Vice President.

Trevor Lienemann moves into the Past President advisory role. Just saying “thank you Trevor” doesn’t seem adequate enough for his leadership this past year. What a year we had as we celebrated our 75th Anniversary as an Association. Each one of these officers and directors have a passion for our Angus cattle and it shows in the decisions they reach in their individual roles and districts. But first and foremost, they always, always keep in mind “What’s the best for our membership”.

Our directors and their individual districts are: West – Matt Dolezal, Rushville; North – Dave Nichols, Chambers; Central – Danny Poss, Scotia; South – Brandon Meyer, Blue Hill; Northeast – John Carlson, Columbus; and Southeast – Brett Weers, Diller; and Commercial Director – Chris Fryzek, Madrid. These fella's are young, visionary, hard working, dedicated and a good bunch to work with.

I appreciate all they do to make my job easier. Please see the photo of our new board on page 8. Looking at that photo, I think we all “clean up pretty good”!!

Our busiest seasons for each us is rapidly approaching and production sales fill the calendar. Please check out the list of member sales this spring on page 52. Also, you’ll find a pullout sale calendar for you to keep close at hand during the coming months.

I

am honored to have been chosen to lead the Nebraska Angus Association for the 2016 calendar year. It is an office that has been held by many astute Angus breeders since its inception and I am looking forward to serving the many outstanding members we have.

This fall of 2015 has put increased pressure on prices of calves and it becomes more evident the “added value” of Angus genetics in the marketplace. Whether it be at our local sale barns across our great state, seed stock sales, or at the grocery counter, the brand “Angus” adds value to our products. And I, having traveled many states over the past several years, truly deep down believe we have the greatest Angus genetics in the country right here in Nebraska, along with the best producers. I wish you all success in the upcoming bull sales, female sales and all of your Angus endeavors. I truly believe there will be great demand for top Angus genetics this year even with lower fed cattle prices.

It is also and exciting year for me to serve as President with the 2016 NJAA show coming to Grand Island.

Dear Nebraska Angus friends,

T

he 2015 Angus Means Business National Convention and Trade Show that was held in Overland Park, Kansas in November seemed to be a great success. Over 2100 folks in the beef industry, including commercial cattlemen, feeders, and seedstock producers were in attendance.

The International Angus Genomics Symposium featured speakers who addressed the human genome and the advancements in chicken genomic testing.

It wouldn’t seem like those two areas would be applicable to the cattle industry, but they absolutely were!

It was enlightening to hear about all of the discoveries being made in genomic research for the advancement of human medicine.

It was also fascinating to learn about the field of chicken genetics.

One of the facts that sticks in my mind is that 25% of the chicken gene pool is turned every seven weeks. By comparison, our bovine genetics are turning at a snail’s pace.

Keynote speaker Ken Schmidt, the former director of communications for Harley-Davidson Motor Company, was very entertaining and informative. He challenged all of us in business to build customer loyalty in creative ways, and he had the audience laughing throughout his presentation.

Breakout sessions were offered on a variety of topics, and seemed to provide information of interest for nearly everyone.

Also, the new AAA CEO, Allen Moczygemba (pronounced MitchEh-Gemba), was introduced at the convention. He comes to the Association with a diverse background in production agriculture, and will perhaps offer a fresh perspective to our organization. His employment commenced on December 1st.

If you weren’t able to attend this year’s convention, I would encourage you to consider attending in 2016. Unfortunately for those of us in Nebraska, it’s going to be a bit more of a trek next year as it will be held in Indianapolis. However, keep it in mind. It’s a great time to see old friends, make new friends, and to learn more about our industry.

am writing this article after returning from spending a weekend in Kearney with my Angus family.

What a wonderful weekend it turned out to be! The temperatures were mild (especially for December) and there was no snow on the ground. The time was spent catching up with friends, meeting new people, and showing cattle. The weekend turned out to be jam-packed! The Nebraska Junior Angus members and Nebraska Angus Association members came together with their families to celebrate the accomplishments of our Angus association at the annual banquet.

The Nebraska Junior Angus members put together an outstanding semen auction that raised over $8,000 for future events. A silent auction with items donated by breeders raised an additional $500. I want to personally thank those junior members who served as chairmen for the auctions.

Both were a total success! On behalf of the members, I also want to thank the Nebraska Angus Association for providing the space and time to hold both events. Thank you to the semen donors, bidders, and buyers. You are an important part of the Nebraska Junior Angus Association’s success and we members truly appreciate your support.

The Nebraska Junior Angus Association members held their annual winter meeting on December 5th.

New members introduced themselves before participating in icebreaker activities. Juniors discussed changing the officer election process from the slate procedure to an application and written ballot for the second time. A written proposal was made and will be voted on at the February meeting during the Cattlemen’s Classic. Juniors affirmed Michaela Clowser’s candidacy to run for the National Junior Angus Board of Directors at the 2016 National Junior Angus Show in Grand Island, Nebraska. The next meeting for the Nebraska Junior Angus Association will be February 20th at 1:00 during the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic. A

post card will be sent to all juniors as a reminder with the location of the meeting.

The weekend ended with the Winter Show on Sunday. This blow and go show is a great opportunity to give new calves experience while showing this year’s heifer one more time. A total of 75 heifers, bulls, steers, and market heifers entered the ring. The judge often shared his opinion that the quality was high from top to bottom class after class. On behalf of the Nebraska Junior Angus Association, I would like to thank the chairmen, the advisors, and our regional manager for organizing and assisting with this event. A huge thanks you to our parents as well.

A View from the Top…

I

n my life, I’ve been called a 6’ footer many times and that comment is usually followed by “just how tall are you?” Yes, I’m 6’5”. My height has created many nicknames and wisecracks throughout the years but now it’s time to shed light on my outlook of the world through a magazine column known as, “A View from the Top”. As a matter of fact, “The Business Breed” shares the same advantage point, “A View from the Top”.

It’s hard to imagine my height could have such a high correlation with my profession.

The purpose of the column (outside the witty name) is to give an association perspective through the eyes of your regional manager. Who knows where the road can take us. It will allow for an opportunity to touch on common issues or questions among members, association highlights, upcoming events, or maybe even a sale report from the road.

The 2016 calendar appears to be very active and busy for Nebraska.

After the National Western in Denver, bull sales will be solid till the middle

of April. Don’t forget to keep up with the sales calendar and sale reports on the Nebraska and American Angus Association websites.

We are all very excited about the “Beef State” hosting the Junior National Angus Show in Grand Island, NE, July 3-9. I can’t think of any better way for Nebraska to showcase our heritage, way of life, and passion for the Angus breed at a national level.

Also, in the works is Cattleman’s Boot Camp, which will be held in the fall at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in the Animal Science Building, Lincoln, NE, sometime in the fall of 2016. Cattlemen's Boot Camp provides Angus breeders and commercial producers the ability to learn further about all segments of our ever-changing beef industry. These comprehensive educational programs address a wide range of beef cattle production topics.

In closing, it was great to see everyone in Kearney at the annual meeting and banquet! It’s been a year now since I started my new beginnings with the American Angus Association. And what a year it has been!

She and her husband, Brent joined Beelaert Angus in 1992. Their three sons; Miles, Jace and Tucker Stagemeyer are members of the Nebraska Junior Angus Association and Miles is currently serving as a director.

In 2000, Bob and Joyce decided to sell their cow herd and let the next generation take over the work load and responsibilities and plan for their future.

This was the beginning of their semi-retirement, although they continue to be active in the operation.

The Beelaerts have been active in the Page Methodist church, teaching Sunday School and holding many offices, including the Christian Men’s Benefit Pancake and Sausage Suppers for 23 years and Worship chairman for over 40 years.

Joyce served as Holt Co. Red Cross chairman and they were 4-H leaders for many years.

They started the Holt County 4H Foundation in 1993 and they enjoy supporting the 4-H program and the Holt County Fair.

Bob is currently serving on the Holt Co. Zoning Board and is Chairman of the Verdigris Township Board.

They were honored to be selected as Grand Marshalls at Nebraska’s first State Fair in Grand Island in 2010 and to receive the Nebraska Pioneer Farm Award in 2008. Their grandsons are the sixth generation helping to care for the land homesteaded by Jacob Harper.

The Quirk Family's cattle involvement started in the early 1900's when Elmer Quirk, John Quirk's grandfather, moved to central South Dakota from his native Wisconsin to escape the constant mud. After working as a butcher and running a meat shop for a few years, he purchased some ranch land in 1921 that started what is now Quirk Ranch just south of Highmore.

Elmer had a commercial Hereford cowherd until his death in the early 1950s.

Then, John P. Quirk, the current John Quirk's father, who had earlier moved to Hastings, Ne, sold the Hereford herd and replaced it with commercial Angus cows. In the late 1950's an artificial insemination program was started using fresh unfrozen semen from Jorgensen herd sires. In the early 1970's these cows were bred with Beef Friesian semen from recently imported bulls, resulting in the crossbred Amerifax herd still on the ranch.

John Quirk's mother's family raised registered Red Poll cattle in southeastern South Dakota, winning ribbons at the South Dakota State Fair as early as

1906. In 1959 John P. Quirk and a partner started M-Q Angus Ranch near Hastings consisting mostly of Marshall bred cattle.

Lefty Kluge and Jerry Fitzgerald managed this herd which was sold in the late 1960s.

The current Quirk Land & Cattle Co, was started in the early 1970s with Western Canadian pedigreed cows being bred to Canadian and Emulous bred sires. Later a number of cows from Ankony Angus were added to the herd. From 1976 until 1999, Rex Harl managed the herd and the show string. During the late 1970s and early 1980s five QLC shown bulls, Hobo, Mr. Angus, Warrant, Sentry and, in 1984, QLC Winchester were National Champion bulls.

In 1996 QLC bulls, all sired by Krugerand of Donamere, were the Grand Champion Carload at the National Western in Denver.

After Rex's retirement in 1999, Dave Walker, who had worked at QLC since 1996, became the manager. Between 2001 and 2006 three QLC raised bulls were Grand Champion at the Nebraska State Fair. QLC LaGrand Forum was twice named National Champion Angus bull in 2004-5 and 2005-6. Current QLC herd sire, Hy-View Phantom, is the Angus breed EPD leader in four categories including for weaning and yearling weight.

Currently the cowherd, cared for by Lee and Sharon Dana, is located on ranches in Webster County both north and south of Red Cloud. The bulls and sale heifers are developed and sold in March at the QLC facility just east of Hastings. The 40th an-

ANGUS NAMES ALLEN MOCZYGEMBA CEO

Texas native to lead the nation’s largest beef breed organization Allen Moczygemba, a native of San Antonio, Texas, is the new chief executive officer of the American Angus Association, effective Dec. 1, 2015.

Moczygemba will serve as the chief executive officer for the American Angus Association and for each of the Association’s subsidiaries: Angus Productions Inc., Certified Angus Beef LLC, Angus Genetics Inc. and the Angus Foundation.

He will also be responsible for implementing the Association’s longterm strategic objectives and leading a team of more than 200 employees. The Association Board of Directors announced the decision today.

“This is a great day for the American Angus Association and the Angus breed,” said Steve Olson, Association president. “Allen not only brings a fresh, strategic vision to our organization, but also a detail-oriented, handson approach to leadership that will ensure our resources are focused on continuing to grow demand for Angus genetics and the Certified Angus Beef brand.”

Moczygemba possesses nearly three decades of experience in the cattle business, managing business units, overseeing brands and building strategic relationships across the beef industry.

He most recently served as vice president of marketing for Advanced Animal Diagnostics, a tech company developing on-farm animal-health diagnostic platforms.

While serving as beef segment marketing director for Zoetis Animal Health and Pfizer Animal Health, he developed partnerships with organizations such as the American Quarter Horse Association, CattleFax, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association and the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.

He managed Progressive Beef, a

program of standard operating procedures for the fed cattle sector that includes an independent third-party audit. The program’s standards align closely with major retailers, such as Performance Food Group.

Moczygemba also was senior vice president for Farm Journal Database Strategies and vice president for Farm Journal Livestock Group, where he was publisher of Beef Today and Dairy Today magazines.

“AAA enjoys a long and successful history in developing innovative ways to advance the Angus breed,” Moczygemba said. “I am excited about helping to write the next chapter for the breed and blazing new trails of opportunity for our members.”

Moczygemba received his degree in 1987 in agriculture communications from Southwest Texas State University. He and his wife, Venetta, have two sons, Lane and Ross.

Q&A with Allen MoczygeMbA American Angus Association’s new CEO talks about Angus — and what members can expect as he takes the reins of the organization.

Q: First, how do you pronounce your name?

A: “I get that a lot… It’s ‘Mitch-ehgemba.’”

Q: Tell us about your background.

A: “I’m a fourth-generation Texan who grew up on a commercial cowcalf operation in south Texas. I graduated from Southwest Texas State University with a degree in agricultural communications in 1987 and have spent nearly three decades in agribusiness and the cattle business, working in different sectors to oversee teams and lead brands, manage business units and build strategic relationships across the beef industry. My wife, Venetta, and I have two grown sons, Lane and Ross. Our boys live in Texas and are both in the final year of

receiving their MBAs.” Q: Why are you interested in serving as the CEO of the American Angus Association?

A: “For starters, it’s the American Angus Association — the most successful cattle breed association in the world.

“Second, I feel that my collaborative leadership style and management skills will be a good fit for the Association.

“And, finally, my business background allows me to bring a different perspective to American Angus, which I believe will be beneficial as the Association begins work on updating the Long-Range Strategic Plan and creating new opportunities for growth in the years ahead. I’ve had the opportunity to work for market leaders such as Farm Journal Media and Pfizer Animal Health/Zoetis, which I believe has prepared me well for my new role with the American Angus Association.”

Q: How do you plan to grow demand for registered Angus seedstock?

A: “While there’s been a tremendous amount of growth in demand for Angus cattle in the past decade, we must continue to grow relevance for everyone from seedstock to commercial users. A high priority will be to develop a more comprehensive focus that creates more value through the chain, especially at the commercial level. We need to continue exploring how to reach commercial ranchers and providing meaningful programs and services for commercial cattlemen that are technologically based. We need to create a data stream from the packer back to the feeder and ultimately to the ranch to ensure that we have all of the information that producers need to make informed decisions about genetics, breeding decisions, etc.”

Q: What do you think is the Association’s greatest strength?

A: “Without a doubt it’s the members and staff and their relentless commitment to improvement of not only the Angus breed but also the beef industry as a whole.”

Q: What surprises you most about AAA? A: “I wouldn’t say I’m surprised by it, but I marvel at the breadth of influence that Angus has across the entire cattle industry. What the American Angus Association does impacts all the various sectors of the cattle business. And while that’s good for Angus and all of our members, it also carries with it a large measure of responsibility because our decisions and actions will ultimately have more influence on the US cattle industry than any other organization.

Q: What should people expect from your style of leadership?

A: “My leadership style is built upon collaboration, building consensus and ultimately creating a culture of empowerment that is energized by a shared vision. It’s also very important to me that all views or perspectives have a seat at the table and not be excluded from having input.”

Q: You came from outside the Association. Why is that an advantage?

A: “I have a diverse background and that allows me to bring a different — and I think broader perspective — to American Angus. In turn, that allows me to see new opportunities. I’ve worked for some great organizations that have provided me a myriad of experience. I feel like all of those experiences have prepared me specifically for my new role at the Association.”

Q: What do you want people to know about you?

A: “First, I’m honored and humbled to be selected to lead such an outstanding organization. I really do understand and appreciate the legacy and heritage of the American Angus Association — and everything it’s meant to the beef industry. It’s important that we continue to build on this legacy, and make economic conditions even better for our members as we move

MAKE PLANS FOR 2016 NATIONAL WESTERN STOCK SHOW

The 110-year-old tradition continues in Denver, Colo., with Angus events Jan. 13-16, 2016.

For many individuals and families, the National Western Stock Show (NWSS) in Denver, Colo., is an extension of their holiday celebrations. The NWSS is a cherished tradition that dates back more than a century, and thousands are expected to travel to the National Western throughout the month of January.

Angus events kick off Jan. 13, 2016, and continue through the week with the annual NWSS Angus Bull Sale, Super-Point Roll of Victory (ROV) Shows, the Junior Angus Heifer Show, as well as special events hosted by the Angus Foundation. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The best of the Angus breed come together to compete at the National Western Stock Show each year,â&#x20AC;? says Jaclyn Clark, American Angus Association director of events and education. â&#x20AC;&#x153;New this year, we look forward to hosting the first Angus Heifer Pen Show on Saturday, Jan. 16, down in the Yards.â&#x20AC;?

For years, the carload and pen Angus bull show has been a unique tradition at the NWSS, and now exhibitors are able to showcase their registered-Angus heifers in the competition that ranks their ability to present a uniform group of cattle.

While walking through the Yards, be sure to stop by the Angus Tent, where Association, Angus Genetics Inc. (AGI) and Certified Angus Beef LLC (CAB) staff members will be on hand to visit about the latest programs and news from the organization.

The show begins with the bull carloads at 8 a.m. in the Livestock Center Auction Arena, followed by the Angus heifer pens and Angus bull pens.

Arlen Sawyer, Bassett, Neb.; Doug Slattery, Chappell Hill, Texas;and Phil Trowbridge, Ghent, N.Y., will serve on the three-judge panel evaluating the group competitions.

The 13-year-old daughter of Brandon and Kami Meyer attends Blue Hill Schools and is a member of the NJAA and the Nebraska Junior Angus Association where she serves on the fundraising committee.

She has participated in state and national shows and showmanship contests. At the National Junior Angus Show (NJAS), Kyra participated in quiz bowl, team sales and photography contests and the All-American Certified Angus Beef® Cook-Off. She has consigned cattle in the 4M Angus/Burken Cattle Co. Bull Sale and is actively involved with her local 4-H and FFA chapter.

Junior Angus breeders must apply for the awards, then meet point requirements in many areas of participation before receiving the honors. Applicants are evaluated in areas of junior Angus association activities and leadership, participation in showmanship, contests and shows, using performance testing to improve their herd and their progress in producing and merchandising Angus cattle.

The NJAA promotes the involvement of young people in raising Angus cattle, while also providing leadership and self-development opportunities for the nearly 6,000 active members nationwide.
