Margo Lehn, NAA Secretary

Greetings from your new NE Angus Association Secretary/Manager,

T

he past month has been a whirlwind of information as I learn the ropes of the Nebraska Angus Association, I am quick to appreciate the fascinating opportunity my new role affords. January was busy meeting and training with former Nebraska Angus Association Secretary/Manager Suzy Hebbert. Learning the entire realm of her job took many hours of visiting and going through each aspect of the Association and events. Bless her heart for making the trip to my home and passing on a part of her previous life. There was a lot to pass on, but with her kindness and desire for a successful transition I think we are off to a great start. Thank you Suzy Hebbert for your commitment to the Association, and for being such a great mentor! One big highlight in my first few weeks as Secretary/Manager was attending the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado, for the very first time. Being able to represent you as producers for the state of Nebraska was an honor and one I will gladly do in the future. I attended the ROV Female Show, Foundation Female Sale, and Bull/Heifer Carload Show. While there I was able to meet several Nebraska Angus producers, semen company representatives, our Nebraska Angus queen, a few of the current board members, and the artist CJ Brown. I distributed many Nebraska Angus News magazines, directories, and sale postcards to help promote and advertise for our members. After the stock show it was time to start compiling my first magazine. In order to make sure my first magazine was a success we moved up the due date for advertisements, sorry for any inconvenience. One article you will find on page 16 is this year’s current Nebraska Angus Queen, Caitlin Nelson of Anselmo. Caitlin, who has many previous queen mentors is making her own way with the Nebraska Angus Association. She truly is a person with a great heart and a passion for the Angus breed. Make sure to check out her story.

Another item of business accomplished was setting the dates for the 2019 Angus Tour. Members selected September 22nd and 23rd as the tour dates in the Central Sandhills portion of our Central district. The tour will run from Mullen to Broken Bow. Stay tuned for more event information or contact me for any questions you may have. 2019 membership renewals were mailed out mid-January, and are due May 10th, 2019. If you did not receive a membership renewal and would like one please do not hesitate to contact me, or you may find membership information on our website, nebraskaangus.org. New members are always welcome! In order to be included in the annual directory you must have a current membership. If you would like to advertise in the directory your reservations are also due on May 10th, with the final copy of your ad due June 1st, 2019. However, I would appreciate your advertisements as soon as you are ready. Calving and sale season is upon us, everyone has more to do than time allows. If you have any questions or concerns please contact me; I have a lot to learn and appreciate your feedback! Also, if you have a Facebook account check out our Facebook page Nebraska Angus Association. I will be posting periodically event information and articles from other beef medias as it comes. I wish you all a prosperous spring and will be looking forward to meeting everyone! Margo Lehn NAA, Secretary/Manager (402) 760-0386 info@nebraskaangus.org

President Speaks By:

Brett Weers NAA President

Fellow Angus Breeders,

Nebraska Angus Association President Brett Weers, Diller 402/806-1627

O

nce again here we are right in the middle of calving and bull sale season. It is definitely one of the most exciting times of the year in the Angus business. There’s no doubt old man winter has made his presence known, but hopefully spring will show up sooner than expected. With all the catalogs that go out, social media posts, consignment lists and postcards it’s great to see what all of the members are doing with there programs. It really makes a person appreciate how many people are selling and promoting this breed. Keeping the commercial cattlemen in mind this season is always important. With a stressed ag economy, weather, and high hay prices, it doesn’t leave much room for error. Therefore solid genetics, performance, fertility, feed efficiency and many other traits will be on everyones mind when bidding at sales. With all the diversity in this breed, there’s plenty of potential to accomplish the goals of today’s commercial cattlemen. I’m excited to see 2019 tour meetings being setup. Once again that

baweers2@gmail.com

is a great opportunity for all members to meet others, understand each other’s program, and view great cattle. I highly encouraged everyone to participate in this activity. For those of you that have had your sales I hope they were successful, and for those upcoming good luck this season. Also to all of the membership best wishes during this calving season. I’ve always felt that it’s a privilege to be in this business and I hope you feel the same. Once again good luck this season!

Jerry Connealy AAA Director

Dear Nebraska Angus Friends,

I

t has been a little over two years since we first learned of Tyson Food’s initial investment into a startup that boasts a ‘burger’ completely devoid of any animal protein. For the first time for many of us, this investment pushed the company Beyond Meat onto our radar screens. Since then, many other alternative protein companies have hit the headlines with stories of growth, expansion and success. Beyond Meat was founded in 2009 in Los Angeles. This past October they applied to be listed on the Nasdaq under the ticker BYND. They have received investments from Microsoft founder Bill Gates, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Tyson Foods among others. They secured spots on the menus at TGI Fridays, Carl’s Jr., Yankee Stadium, and at Harvard University. WalMart, Kroger, Fresh Thyme, Hy-Vee, and Publix all carry the Beyond Burger, with Whole Foods carrying it right next to ground beef in the meat case. In the battle over nomenclature for who gets to call their products ‘meat’ and who does not, Beyond Meat stands right at the front of the line, fighting for the right to claim their products as meat. This is because, unlike many other alternative protein companies, Beyond Meat is not trying to catch the attention of vegetarians and vegans. Rather, they are going straight after carnivores, trying to pique their curiosity. Due to better technology in production, the product becomes less expensive, enticing more consumers to give it a try. For example, Memphis Meats, a competitor of Beyond Meat, can make a pound of meat for less than $2,400 start to finish, which is down from $18,000 only one year earlier. This demonstrates that the products can scale and someday become economically competitive. Our industry may be inclined to believe that companies such as Beyond Meat and Memphis Meats are only on the fringe and will not pose a real threat to our industry. Perhaps this is true. But perhaps it is not. Since 2010, annual global sales of plant-

based substitute meat have gained 8% each year, and are growing at twice the rate of processed meat, according to a Bloomberg report. The market may continue to grow at 8.4% annually over the next five years, with China helping to speed the expansion as it seeks to cut meat consumption in half by 2030. Even in our own Beef State, the Beyond Burger product is available for purchase at several grocery stores in Grand Island, Lincoln, and Omaha, as well as at fast food locations. It will likely continue to gain traction, and will surely experience a certain amount of success in converting the hearts and stomachs of those who used to exclusively consume beef grown by the likes of you and me. Whether or not we believe that alternative protein poses a real threat to our market share, it would behoove us all to learn from the success they have already attained, the root of which lies in the American consumer’s belief that beef does not contribute to a greener future for the earth. There has never been a better time to tell our own story, and perhaps take a look in the mirror at our industry standards to discover whether we could be doing things better. At the end of the day, the consumer is right…whether they really are or not. They are our lifeblood. They vote with their wallets, and if we are losing votes, we best take a good hard look at why. One way to start is to know what we’re up against, tip our hats to their creativity, and then put our noses to the grindstone and find our own creative ways to keep our beef-loving American customers coming back. Sincerely, Jerry Connealy • AAA Director (308) 544-6552 jconnealy@gmail.com

nebraska Angus Queen Spotlight Nebraska’s Angus Queen

Caitlin Havelka Nelson The 2018/2019 Miss Nebraska Angus Queen, Caitlin Nelson, is not unaccustomed to the duties of the Nebraska Angus Queen. Through the 70’s and into the 2000’s several family members have held the title of Nebraska Angus Queen, including a great aunt and three aunts. You can say being queen and representing Nebraska is in their blood, and she has had plenty of advice on wardrobe, presentation, and principles to reign as queen. For her, representing and setting examples for our younger generations is a major priority. When asked what she is most looking forward to in being queen Caitlin ecstatically answered, “making more connections with other queens, junior members, the National Junior Angus Association staff, traveling, and learning more about the Angus breed.” Caitlin is from Anselmo, Nebraska, and is the oldest of six children. She knows what it takes to be responsible, caring, and a role model for younger kids. In her spare time she likes to read and draw, and her favorite subjects in school are English, Language Arts, Anatomy, and Physiology. She plans to continue her education at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with intentions of becoming a physical therapist or athletic trainer; true to her roots she aspires to provide sports medicine team for rodeos. As a fourth generation Angus producer Caitlin helped her 16 • Nebraska Angus Association News • March/April 2019

grandparents, Randy and Joan Nelson, on their ranch, as well as her parents, Kent and Michelle Nelson, prepare their first bull sale that was held

last year. She is a member of the Nebraska Junior Angus Association, and has been involved in multiple actives including quiz bowl, cook-off, and exhibiting her own cattle. She plans to remain active as a junior member through officer positions and competitions, but does not plan to continuing showing. Instead, she plans to help her sister Kali show cattle for the first time this year. Caitlin was crowned queen during the 2018 Nebraska Junior Angus State Show and served her first duty at the 2018 Nebraska State Fair. Since then she has upheld her responsibilities as queen by attend-

ing local and national shows. Last month she attended the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado, where she assisted Miss American Angus, Madison Weaver, by handing out awards for the ROV Angus Heifer shower, the Junior Heifer Show, and the Angus Carload Show. Caitlin plans to attend local Angus bull sales and the National Junior Angus Show in Louisville, Kentucky. Caitlin relishes the wonderful experience provided by honor of Nebraska Angus Queen. Through her passion for the Angus breed, and a caring heart for the younger generation, she has set a fantastic example for our Angus Family. For future Nebraska Angus Queen candidates Caitlin gives them advice to “put themselves out there.” She also advises to take advantage of your time as queen, reach out and make connections, and make the most of every opportunity. The relationships you build today will likely benefit you in the future. The Angus Association provides a great network that will give you many lifelong friends. Present yourself in the best light possible, but always be true to yourself.

NGUS FoUNDAtioN RAiSeS $127,500 At the NAtioNAL WeSteRN StoCK ShoW Angus breeders support education, youth and research by purchasing Foundation Heifer Package and heifer pregnancies. Since 1980, the Angus Foundation has delivered an elite Angus Foundation Heifer Package at the National Western Stock Show (NWSS) in Denver to generate unrestricted funds for Angus education, youth and research efforts. The Angus Foundation also offered five cutting-edge confirmed heifer pregnancies from notable Angus breeders. Combined, the six lots raised an impressive $127,500 in support of the Angus breed’s future. Foundation Heifer Package Tari Hoagland and Rick Smith of Lakeview Angus in Mead, Colorado, purchased the Angus Foundation Heifer for $65,000. The package also includes: 30 days of free insurance from American Live Stock Insurance Co., Geneva, Illinois; free transportation to the buyer’s ranch provided by Lathrop Livestock Transportation, Dundee, Illinois; and an advanced reproductive technology package from Trans Ova Genetics, Sioux Center, Iowa. Krebs Ranch of Gordon, Nebraska, donated the elite heifer, KR Queen 8213. The scarcity in her genetics made her a valuable investment for the buyers, as she is the only ET calf of that particular mating to leave the ranch. “We are so excited to be bringing this heifer back home with us,” Hoagland said. “She’ll be a great

donor and will be instrumental in developing our bulls.” Several Heifer Pregnancies were offered by: Blackstone Cattle Company, Mineral Point, Wisconsin - Deer Valley Farm, Fayetteville, Tennessee - Musgrave Angus, Griggsville, Illinois Riverbend Ranch, Idaho Falls, Idaho Top Line Farm, Tremont, Illinois.

The Angus Foundation Heifer Package has raised more than $2.5 million since the inception of the event. “The Angus Foundation Heifer Package continues to be the premier fundraiser to increase opportunities for Angus education, youth and research,” said Milford Jenkins, Angus Foundation president. “We can’t thank our donors and buyers enough for investing in the future of the Angus breed through their generous support of this year’s event.” For more information about the Angus Foundation or the annual Angus Foundation Heifer Package sale, visit angusfoundation.org. — Written by Kate Ryan, Angus Communications
