Kansas Angus Association Annual Meeting & Banquet ▪ Jan. 30, 2021 Futurity Jr. Show- Jan 31, 2021 Hutchinson, KS The Kansas Angus Association (KAA) Annual Meeting, Banquet isr January 30, 2021 in Hutchinson. The KAA annual meeting and educational presentations are on Saturday, January 30 at the Kansas State Fairgrounds. The annual banquet which will include a social hour, the Kansas Angus Auxiliary scholarship auction, honorary member induction, KAA Directory page auction, Miss Kansas Angus crowning and the KJAA t-shirt fundraiser auction will be in the Cottonwood Court building on the fairgrounds later on Saturday evening. Please make banquet reservations-by January 22 at www.kansasangus.org. The Kansas Junior Angus Association members have opened their traditional Futurity Junior Show to include all junior Angus members and will welcome out-of- state exhibitors to the Sunday show. See page 7 for more information on the show, entry deadline is January 22.

The President's Pen

Dear Fellow Angus Enthusiasts, As I set here this morning writing my farewell letter, the end of 2020 is coming to an end rapidly! I know this is something that many will celebrate to put this in our rear view mirror and hopefully life will return to a new state of normal soon!

I want to take this opportunity to personally thank each member of the KAA for what has been my “lifetime” leading up to this moment, grooming, teaching, instructing and following many of you as far back as I can remember. I can remember many past presidents throughout the years at what is now the old Futurity banquet taking charge and then the retiring addresses- wondering someday if I would ever get to serve in that role. Now that has come and went in what seems like a blur! I want to personally thank each and every board member before me, but special thanks goes to the team that I have had the pleasure of serving with over the last few years.

If I can leave everyone with a single message – I would LOVE to encourage all members of any size, scale, or involvement to mark your calendar for January 30 at the KS State Fairgrounds for a special informative, educational workshop in regards to ANGUS LINK, our annual meeting and banquet to follow at the Cottonwood Court on the fairgrounds. What a great event this was last year and look forward to another great Angus enthusiasm filled evening this year! See page 1 for schedule and more information.

Notes & News from Anne

Out with the Old in with the New As I was thinking about what to write for this column, the phrase “out with the old in with the new” came to mind. Upon researching its origin, I learned it first emerged in pop culture in the late 1970’s and is believed to mean— Move Forward. When writing for this, I also look back on what I wrote the previous year. In the January 2020 Kansas Angus News, I wrote about having a plan B in reference to the banquet and hotel venue contracted for the annual Kansas Angus Banquet closing down just a month prior to the event.

Little did I know that within a couple months 2020 would bring many plan B’s. Some of those plan B's led us to slow down, some brought anxiety and sorrow and some new opportunities to grow as a person.

Move Forward I know we are all ready to move forward into 2021 with the anticipation of leaving 2020 behind and all the “new normal” we experienced. I wish each of you a very Happy New Year as we move forward in to the new year and take on the challenges and opportunities, joys and sorrows, sunny days and rain , spring calves and cull cows the year is sure to bring.

American Angus Association Elects New Officers, Board Leadership Kansan Jerry Theis Elected Five new directors were elected to the 2020-2021 American Angus Association® board of directors, as well as a president and chairman, and a vice president and treasurer of the board, during the 137th Annual Convention of Delegates hosted in Kansas City, Missouri.

Delegates voted to represent Association members at the 137th Annual Meeting and elected the 2020-2021 officers and directors. Directors can serve up to two three-year terms on the board and, if elected, serve additional one-year terms in office as president and chairman and/or vice president and treasurer.

Elected to their first terms are Mark Ahearn, Texas; Smitty Lamb, Georgia; Charles Mogck, South Dakota; Darrell Stevenson, Montana; and Jerry Theis, Kansas.

Board Members Elected Mark Ahearn and his family established Turner Meadow Ranch in East Texas in the mid-1980s.

Apart from his 35-year career in law enforcement, Ahearn’s passion has always lied in raising highquality Angus cattle. He has studied pedigrees and learned the business from the ground up. His family has grown their herd to about 200 females while being active in the Texas Angus Association.

Ahearn served in a leadership role with the Texas Angus Association for 16 years. In addition to creating numerous educational opportunities and sale events, Ahearn was also responsible for creating and writing the policy for the Raymond Moore Endowment Scholarship Fund which benefits Texas Junior Angus members.

Smitty Lamb grew up on a small row crop farm in East Georgia where he discovered his passion for Angus cattle at an early age. He followed that drive to the University of Georgia (UGA) where he earned a bachelor’s degree in animal science and a master’s degree in meat and muscle biology. His career eventually led him to an opportunity in the cotton industry, but he always came home to Angus cattle. His family has owned and operated Ogeechee Angus Farm since 1997, and it has since become one of the most reliable sources for Angus genetics in the Southeast. Since 2017, Ogeechee Angus Farm has marketed more than 100 bulls annually. Lamb has served in leadership roles with the Georgia Angus Association, as well as the chairman of the Southern National Angus Show committee and the co-committee chair of the 2009 National Junior Angus Show. The Lambs were awarded the Georgia Angus Association Member of the Year in 2017 for their service to the organization.

Charles Mogck is a third-generation Angus breeder from South Dakota.

Mogck has built upon his family’s heritage in the breed and increased their herd to 400 registered females while marketing 120 bulls annually. They farm 2,000 acres of corn, beans and wheat with an additional 2,500 acres of pasture and hay ground. Mogck & Sons routinely buys feeder cattle from their commercial customers, which allows them to collect data on their customers cattle. Their operation actively utilizes Association programs such as MaternalPlus™ and Angus Herd Improvement Records℠ (AHIR). to make the best decisions for the future of their herd.

Darrell Stevenson has strong ties to the Angus breed and a history of activity in the Montana Angus Association. Stevenson’s grandparents were charter members of the Montana Angus Association in 1951, and his father participated in the first National Junior Angus Showmanship contest in 1967. His father was on the Montana Angus Association and American Angus Association board of directors as well, serving as president from 1992-1993. Stevenson now continues his family’s legacy by operating Stevenson Angus Ranch. He is actively involved in international Angus events and has attended shows in Argentina, New Zealand, Scotland and Russia. In 2010 Stevenson created a partnership with two Russian businessmen to form an international beef venture between the two countries.

Due to the success, Stevenson has since overseen shipments of Angus cattle to Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.

Jerry Theis is a devoted second-generation Angus breeder and lifetime member of the American Angus Association. His parents established April Valley Farms in 1952 in the Salt Creek Valley area of Leavenworth County, Kansas. Theis continues his family’s diversified operation, now consisting of Angus cattle, crop and swine production. Cattle are marketed through their annual spring production sale as well as private treaty. April Valley Farms was recognized as a Historic Angus Herd by the American Angus Association in 2019. Jerry graduated from the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1991 and currently operates a mixed -animal veterinary practice. He and his wife are actively involved in the Kansas Angus Association and currently serve as the Kansas Junior Angus Association advisors. He served two terms on the Kansas Angus Association board of directors and as president in 2010.

Officers Elected David Dal Porto, Oakley, California, was elected as Association president and chairman of the board. Dal Porto succeeds Don Schiefelbein, Kimball, Minnesota, who served as president from 2019-2020. Dal Porto and his wife, Jeanene, manage their registered and commercial Angus operation in Oakley, Brentwood and northern California. They have three children— Lindsey, AJ and Dawson. Dal Porto has firsthand experience at every level in the evolution of performance information and how to apply it. He complements that knowledge with a management background developed from his experiences. Dal Porto and his bull sale partner, David Medeiros, were awarded the 2011 Certified Angus Beef® (CAB) Seedstock Commitment to Excellence Award at the CAB Annual Conference.

Jerry Connealy, Whitman, Nebraska, was elected by delegates to serve as Association vice president and vice chairman. He has served on the Association board of directors for six years and spent this last year as Association treasurer. The fifth-generation cattleman has operated the family ranch since 1981 with his wife, Sharon. The Connealys have three sons, Jed, Gabriel and Ben; as well as a daughter, Hannah. Jerry focuses his cow herd base on productivity traits and manages two bull sales per year, selling 300 bulls at each sale.

Chuck Grove, Forest, Virginia, who is currently serving his second term on the board of directors, will serve as the 2020-2021 Association treasurer. Grove was an American Angus Association regional manager serving Kentucky and Tennessee, and during his 39-year tenure, he also covered Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia, Delaware and Ohio. Grove and his wife, Ruth, reside on the family farm and run a 100-head Angus herd.

Kansas Junior Angus Association Happy New Year Temperatures have dropped and for some of us cows are about to begin calving. With the new year comes a chance to start things over and set goals for the coming year.

There are exciting changes happening with the annual Kansas Junior Angus Futurity Show at the end of the month. This year we have decided to open up the show to all junior Angus exhibitors across the country. We feel with this new change we will be able to have an exciting show for all and raise some additional income to cover the expenses of the show.

We are also going to continue our t-shirt auction that we held last year. Anyone is welcome to buy an available spot on the t-shirt for their logo or name. We encourage all members of the Kansas Angus Association and the American Angus Association to attend our banquet event held the night before the show. 2021 Angus Internship Applications Due Feb.1 Four hands-on internship opportunities are available to college students.

In agriculture, learning by doing has proven to be the best form of experience. Applications are now open for college-age students to apply for the American Angus Association ®, Angus Journal ® and Angus Genetics Inc. (AGI) 2021 summer internships. These 10-week internship programs provide a unique hands-on experience that will both challenge and instill confidence both professionally and personally.

The four internships being offered are: Angus Journal: This writing-intensive opportunity offers the chance to join a multi-media effort, which includes the Angus Journal® print publication and the AJ Daily electronic newsletter, as well as the Angus Journal’s website and social media presence.

Communications: From print stories to video scripts, photography, graphic design and more, the communications intern will truly gain valuable agricultural communications experience.Events and Education: The intern will assist in planning and executing youth events hosted by the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA), including preparations, correspondence and coordination for junior shows and events Travel to the 2021 National Junior Angus Show (NJAS), Leaders Engaged in Angus Development (LEAD) Conference and other events is expected. AGI: Students pursuing their master’s degree or Ph.D. in animal breeding and genetics should apply for the AGI summer internship. Angus Beef Bulletin: Angus Media is finalizing an internship structure with the Angus Beef Bulletin that will likely include a part-time schedule on a quarterly basis.

My name is Alexandria (Alex) Cozzitorto, and this past July at the 2020 National Junior Angus Show, I was elected to the National Junior Angus Board of Directors( NJAB). I’m looking forward to these next two years serving you all!

During my time on the campaign trail in pursuit of the “green jacket,” I chose resilience as my working theme.

Given the uncertainties of these trying times, it seemed fitting. The livestock industry, specifically the Angus breed, is a perfect example of resilience and has introduced me to some of the most resilient individuals I know.

In July, the Events and Education team at the American Angus Association, with the support of association staff, junior families and Angus breeders across the nation, achieved the remarkable feat of moving the largest junior cattle show in the nation from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to Tulsa, Oklahoma in a matter of months.

Today, this same theme of resilience is following us into 2021, as the news of the cancellation of the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo in Denver, Colo., created an agriculture industry uproar. The sudden end of this 125-year-old livestock tradition was not going to be received without pushback. Instead of accepting the decision quietly, the livestock industry showed us, once again, just how resilient it is. In a matter of a couple of short weeks, Angus, together with other cattle breeds, will all be together, once again, at the Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Sure, the cancellations and hours of extra work this pandemic has brought with it are discouraging, to say the least; however, I choose to appreciate the silver lining in it all. We have all learned to appreciate the moments we once took for granted. Throughout this past year, we were reminded that tomorrow, next month or even next year is not guaranteed. The unity of the livestock industry, despite these challenges, has been a beautiful thing to watch unfold. Together, we stand proud, remain resilient and continue to fight for our industry – one goal; one family; one team.

I am proud to be a part of the Angus team and look forward to seeing you at an Angus event in the near future!

Kansas Angus Auxiliary The Christmas season is here and 2020 is coming to an end.

I am sure there are several of us that cannot wait to put it behind us. As we ring in 2021, many of us will make new year resolutions and cross our fingers that 2021 will be better than the one we are finishing.

I would like to invite you to attend the 2021 Kansas Angus Futurity as well as our Annual Meeting and Banquet. The annual meeting will be held on January 30, 2021 at the Kansas State Fairgrounds, Hutchinson, KS. During our meeting we will be welcoming new members to our state board, recognize our out-going Kansas Angus royalty and introduce the new candidates.

The Auxiliary is very fortunate to be able to present the Kenneth and Lorene Moore Scholarship at the Kansas Angus Futurity Banquet. I encourage everyone to bring an item to the silent auction that is hosted by the Auxiliary that takes place following the banquet. This is a great event to help support our Angus Juniors.

Focusing on Longevity with AHIR

The American Angus Association® announces updates to the Angus Herd Improvement RecordsSM program.

Jerry Cassady, director of member services, and Chris Stallo, chief operating officer of the American Angus Association®, presented the Focusing on Longevity panel on Nov. 8 at the 137th Angus Annual Meeting in Kansas City, Missouri. The Focusing on Longevity discussion shared how commercial cattlemen are turning to seedstock producers for maternal traits that have been difficult to characterize. Cassady and Stallo believe that with the implementation of an inventory reporting option through the Angus Herd Improvement Records (AHIR) program, the Angus breed not only will collect more data but will also collect more useful data to better serve all sectors of the industry.

Inventory reporting is the new, simplified option within AHIR, which focuses on capturing hard-to-reach traits while keeping current inventory on your cow herd. A major advantage of inventory reporting is that it gives full credit to the high performers in a herd.

The information gathered with inventory reporting, from disposal and reason codes while accounting for each calf born, is especially informative for the Association and the Angus breed’s end goal – the focus on longevity.

Inventory reporting is located on the member’s AAA Login homepage with a simplified, step-by-step guide to walk you through updating your cow herd. Enrollees are required to report calf information or a disposal code or reason code for the cow. Additionally, there are two enrollment periods with inventory reporting and the price is $2 per female over 12 months of age.

Little changes occur for the MaternalPlus program. For members already enrolled in MaternalPlus, they essentially are enrolled in inventory reporting. Enrollment dates for inventory reporting and MaternalPlus is available twice a year.

The most effective time to enroll your herd is after your current calf crop is weaned and before your next calf crop has started calving. Therefore, if your herd is mainly a spring calving herd, you are best to enroll your herd from November to January. If you are primarily a fall calving herd, it is best to enroll your herd from May to July.

Thank You Dear Kansas Angus Association members and friends, I would like to take the time to say thank you for the opportunity I have had to serve the Angus breed and the state of Kansas as the 2020 Miss Kansas Angus. It has been an honor and a privilege to represent the Kansas Angus Association, the Kansas Angus Auxiliary, and the Kansas Junior Angus Association. It has been a year that I will never forget.

2020 was not the year that any of us could have expected. My calendar was filled with bull sales and other Angus events that I was looking forward to attending. Then in the blink of an eye, many of the things in my planner were crossed out or had a big question mark by them. If this year has taught me anything, it is that nothing is guaranteed and everything in life is temporary. I decided to cherish and embrace every moment I had in my sash and crown.

I was fortunate to attend a legislative dinner hosted by the Kansas Livestock Association, numerous Kansas Angus production sales, and junior and open shows including the National Junior Angus Show alongside Miss American Angus, Eva Hinrichsen. None of these travels would have been possible however without the support of Ms. Anne Lampe, chairman of the Miss Kansas Angus program; the Kansas Angus Auxiliary and the numerous other MKA program sponsors; the outstanding Angus breeders of Kansas; and my parents, Mark and Brenna Wulfkuhle. They were the backbone behind my journey as Miss Kansas Angus and helped me to get where I needed to be.

2020 has been a year of ups and down, highs and lows and a whole lot of surprises in between. I am thankful for my time representing the “business breed” and I look forward to what is to come. Wishing you all many blessings and a little more normality in 2021.

Showring Purple Angus Champions Named at 2020 American Royal ROV Show Angus enthusiasts gathered for the 2020 American Royal Super Point Roll of Victory (ROV) Angus Show, October 24 in Kansas City, Mo. Garrett Lampe, Tallla, Ill., evaluated the 232 entries, which included 194 females, 36 bulls and two cow-calf pairs.

Triple F Sara’s Dream 408 won grand champion female for Carson Rieck, Creston, Iowa. The April 2019 daughter of Plum Creek Paradox 161B first won late junior champion.

Seldom Rest Cassandra 9060 claimed reserve grand champion female for Kathryn Coleman, Modesto, Calif. The March 2019 daughter of KR Casino 6243 also won reserve late junior champion.
