xcitement, nervousness, uncertainty, and a sigh of relief are all expressions witnessed while taking bids at a production sale. The last couple of months I have been able to attend several member production sales, and I can’t help but appreciate all the emotions that help bring people together in the Angus breed. As I sit back and watch the field representatives take bids, poke fun at one another, and show their gratitude, it is evident how dedicated they are to represent the nation’s largest beef breed. With the Angus breed continuing to lead in docility, adaptability, stability, carcass traits, and more, a buyer can be confident in their Angus sale purchase. Since 1873, this breed has continued to evolve to the needs of the industry.

With the sale season nearly half over the association board and myself are currently busy planning for the summer events. The summer events we hope to see you at are: Nebraska State Fair, Husker Harvest Days, and the Angus Tour. Each of these events offer their own marketing tools and opportunities, and allow you to meet with several people within the industry. Throughout the upcoming months please watch for updates in email and on our Facebook page. These updates will include information on entry deadlines, registrations, schedules, and more. We appreciate all the hard work, dedication, and time from our members to be involved in these events. Without you we would not be able to continue to promote the Angus breed at these events.

Aside from our events, I want to kindly remind the youth of a scholarship program the association offers each spring. Each year the Nebraska Angus Association offers $1,000 in scholarships. To apply, the applicant must be a Nebraska resident, current member of the Nebraska Junior Angus Association, and a current junior member of the American Angus Association or, if over 21, a former member of both organizations.

The Applicant must be a graduating high school senior or undergraduate who will be enrolling in a two or four year post high school educational program in the coming year. The applicant’s parents or the applicant themselves must be a member of the Nebraska Angus Association to qualify.

Deadline for this scholarship is April 15th.

I hope everyone has had a successful calving and production sale season. The upcoming months will be busy with branding and getting cattle to pasture. I pray you will be blessed with green grass and a successful spring and summer! s winter fades and the warm (hopefully wet) days of spring are right around the corner there’s a lot of optimism in the air.

What an exciting time as you watch your new calf crop grow and develop.

As you start to think about next year’s bull sale or the calves that you will market, you can’t help but be excited!

Speaking of optimism, as I write this there have already been a lot of very successful bull sales around the state.

Fat cattle are in the low $1.40’s, the August feeder board is at $1.85.

Everywhere you turn top quality angus genetics are demanding a premium.

Yes, we have our challenges, but this is an exciting time to be in the angus business.

The association is excited to be gearing up for the annual Nebraska Angus Tour next fall. It will be held in the Northeast district, what an exciting opportunity for the Northeast membership to highlight their area and operations. Also, as a board, there have been discussions about moving the

few years ago, I wrote a column about AngusLink. It all started in the summer of 2018, and at that time there were a lot of questions surrounding its inception.

With 20/20 hindsight, yes there were some different choices that could have been made. However, with that same hindsight, it was the fastest and most efficient way for the Association to launch a program that would reward commercial producers for superior genetics and differentiate their calves’ value to potential buyers.

I’m grateful that we jumped in when we did, and would like to note that AngusLink has been expanded to include USDA Process Verified Programs (PVP), as well. These allimportant additions bring the opportunity for even more value for our producers’ calves as they are rewarded for particular care and handling practices.

With AngusLink, important data can be delivered to feeders so that they can also use the Angus Association’s science to make better decisions for the cattle they purchase – whether they are selling strictly by performance, on the grid, or a combination of the two.

As we head into the fourth year of AngusLink, let’s revisit a brief overview of the Genetic Merit Scores.

The graphic below gives a general picture of the scoring of the AngusLink enrolled cattle. The AngusLink scores’ foundation is based on the American Angus Association $Value indexes: $B (beef score), $F (feedlot performance score) and $G (grid score). The $Values are built from current EPDs, which are built from actual carcass data.

Each of the three scores are derived from the producer’s current bull battery, their past bull battery and the breed composition of the producer’s cow herd.

The more information provided the more accurate the genetic prediction of the score.

The bull battery is determined at enrollment time, and the Association has a great staff of individuals to assist folks with the enrollment process.

Beef Score – Predicts Genetic potential for feedlot performance and carcass value by looking at EPDs such as carcass weight, marbling, and feed efficiency.

Feedlot Performance Score – Signifies the enrollment group’s potential for postweaning performance in the feedlot and takes into account average daily gain and dray matter intake EPDs. Grid Score – Predicts the enrollment group’s performance potential for carcass grid merit, referencing marbling, fat and ribeye area EPDs.

The Certified Angus Beef® brand Targeting the Brand™ logo appearson the scorecard when enrollment groups meet the phenotypic and genetic specifications listed below: Phenotype Each animal in the marketing group must be predominantly solid black and meet the live-animal specification for Angus branded programs. For more information see Carcass Specifications for Approved Programs.

Genetic Enrollment groups earn a grid score of 125 or higher.

In addition to Genetic Merit scores, options for USDA PVP participation include: Age & Source Non-Hormone Treated Cattle (NHTC) AL-Neverever3 (NE3) AL-Angus Verified AL- Calf Management AL- Cattle Care & Handling

Any of these programs could potentially add value to folks’ calf crops if they choose to participate. The information found at angus.org/AngusLink is exceptional and easy to understand.

AngusLink and its associated PVP programs have proven their value time and again in the prices received for these calves. The small fee for participation seems to be a great value for many.

The Auxiliary would like to again, invite anyone that is interested in joining, to contact any of us for more information. We are moving forward and plan to meet soon. Our goal is to continue to assist the Nebraska Angus Association, and our Nebraska Angus Juniors.

2022 Auxiliary Scholarships Available for Junior Angus Members

T

he American Angus Auxiliary scholarships are presented annually. The total amount awarded will vary. Ten (10) scholarships will be awarded. The exact amount of the first, second, third, fourth and fifth place awards given to both boy and girl qualified applicants will be determined by May 1, 2022. Scholarships may be defined as financial grants for which no equivalent work is required.

Each state is entitled to submit one girl and one boy application for the national scholarships. The two applications must be submitted by the state or regional scholarship chairperson to the American Angus Auxiliary Scholarship Chairperson.

All scholarship applicants are encouraged to attend the National Junior Angus Show in early July.

The scholarship application is the basis from which the candidates are chosen to compete for Miss American Angus. Each girl submitting a scholarship application will be required to complete a form declaring her intent to compete/not compete for Miss American Angus if given the opportunity. The five highest placing girls choosing to compete for Miss American Angus will be announced at the National Junior Show. These girls will be required to attend the Miss American Angus contest held in November at the Angus Convention.

The intent form and additional information on the role and requirements of Miss American Angus will be mailed to each girl applicant AFTER her scholarship application is received. (Please note: choosing not to compete for Miss American Angus does not affect scholarship eligibility.)

ith the month of February coming to an end I'm sure many of you are busy with calving and bull sales. As we enter the spring months, juniors will have a couple things to keep in mind. This year's state show will be held in McCook June 3rd-5th. We hope to see many of you there for a weekend with our Angus family. At the state show we hold our election for new state junior officers and discuss plans for nationals. This year's national show will be held in Kansas City July 2nd-9th.

High School seniors interested in applying for the American Angus Auxiliary scholarship need to have applications turned in by April 15th to our state scholarship chairperson.

Information is posted on the Nebraska Angus Association website regarding specific deadlines for the state scholarships. These scholarships are a great opportunity to get rewarded for your involvement and success within the Angus breed.

There are a few other great opportunities to meet new people and gather with Angus families from across the country. One of the two big events is Raising the Bar, which will take place on

March 31st through April 3rd in Lubbock, Texas. Following this great event is LEAD, which will take place July 28th through the 31st in Lexington, Kentucky. LEAD is the best opportunity to see new places, explore different forms of agriculture, and make friendships that last a lifetime! The Nebraska Junior Angus Show is a “No Fit” show defined as exhibitors may NOT use glue, adhesive, foam, coloring or paint products. Oils and “Kleen Sheen” type products are allowed. No stomach pumping or artificial fillers allowed.

A.ELIGIBILITY OF EXHIBITORS AND ENTRIES 1. Exhibitors must be members of the NeJAA and must be between the ages of 8-21 as of January 1 of the current year. Junior membership shall be issued only to an individual and shall expire upon attainment of age 21. Participation is acceptable through the calendar year of the individual’s 21st birthday.

2. Animals must be registered in the name of the exhibitor.

3. Eligibility of entries will be determined by age and the National Junior Angus Association show classification.

4. Exhibitors in the bred-and-owned categories must be the breeder and first and continuous owner of the animal entered.

5. Exhibitors may show up to six entries in the owned heifer category and up to four entries in the steer category. They may also show as many bred-and-owned bulls, bred-and-owned heifers, and cow-calf pairs as they wish.

6. Must present original certificate or electronic registration at check-in. All tattoos must be legible.

7. The show will be blow and go.

8. The ownership deadline for the State Angus Show shall coincide with the National Junior Angus Show, May 15th, 2022.

B. CLASSES 1.The classes will be the same as recommended by the National Junior Angus Association. There will be classes for bred-and-owned heifers, bred-and owned bulls, owned heifers, phenotype/genotype heifers, registered steers, cow/calf pairs, and predominantly black hided crossbred steers and heifers. There must be at least 5 or more head to have a separate bred and owned division.

2.There will be an additional class for best pair of heifers. Both heifers must be shown by the same exhibitor on show day to qualify as a pair.

3.There will be a Supreme Champion selected from the Champion owned heifer, bred-and-owned heifer, cow-calf pair, and bull.

C. SHOWMANSHIP 1.Showmanship classes will be divided according to age as of January 1 of the current year following the National Junior Angus Association’s age divisions for contests. The Junior Division: 13 and under, Intermediate Division: 14-17, and Senior Division: 18-21. To be eligible for showmanship contests, partic ipants must be exhibiting an animal at the show.

Unless otherwise stated, National Junior Angus Show rules apply.

PARTICIPATING IN NATIONAL SHOWMANSHIP CLASS: Two contestants will be selected to represent Nebraska at the National Junior Angus Show from a specified NJAS showmanship class at the State Junior Show. To represent Nebraska at the National Showmanship contest, the exhibitor must be a Junior or Life Member of the Nebraska and American Angus Association, an active member of the Nebraska Junior Angus Association. All fees must be paid before entering the contest. Contestants by entering agree to abide by the NeJAA and NJAA rules. Contestant’s birth date must be from Jan 1, 2001 through Dec 31, 2007.

•Active Member being defined as having participated in state, regional, or national Angus shows/activities in one of the past two years, current year excluded.

Nebraska Angus Queen Spotlight N EBRASKA A NGUS Q UEEN Rachel Smith The Nebraska Angus Association would like to introduce to you our 2022 Miss Nebraska Angus Queen, Rachel Smith. Rachel, who is from Osceola, Nebraska, grew up in the country outside of many small towns. She spent most of her time in Stromsburg, which happens to be the Swedish capital of Nebraska. She is the daughter of Allen and Heather Smith with an older brother, Garrett Jacobs, and a younger brother, Wyatt Smith. When asked what made her decide to try and become the next Nebraska Angus Queen she replied with “I became interested after meeting Victoria Armstrong, who was the Nebraska Angus Queen a few years before I started showing. I remember watching her in the show ring hand out ribbons and I wanted to help. I have always looked up to the Miss American Angus queens and aspire to leave a lasting impact on young juniors’ lives”.

Rachel’s path in the Angus business started in 2008 when her parents bought their very first registered Angus heifer. At a very young age she enjoyed working with her cattle and after attending her first LEAD conference decided to go headfirst into growing her own Angus herd. From there she decided to be more involved with the Nebraska and National Junior Angus Associations. Other activities that Rachel has been involved in include her school’s drama teams, FFA chapter, and National Honor Society.

When asked what has been her favorite part of being Queen so far, Rachel responded with “I have enjoyed seeing the joy on the juniors' faces when they win a class and receive their

awards. The peewee showmanship class is always my favorite part of the day because there is so much excitement shown on their faces. They are not yet old enough to show, but it is what builds our future as an

association”. She also commented that her advice to any girl looking to be the next Nebraska Angus Queen is “Continue to stay involved in as many activities offered by the junior associations. Be yourself and always help those in need. These are good rules to always try to follow whether you are applying to be queen or not, but I know that my involvement helped prepare me for this role”.

Rachel’s goals to stay involved in the Angus industry includes continuing to grow her family business's customer base by producing high quality of cattle, rather than a high quantity of cattle. She hopes to continue to be able to select genetics that will produce show heifers that will be able to go on and produce even higher quality cattle. This year she has set a goal for herself to run for the National Junior Angus board of directors. Rachel currently is a freshman attending Hastings College for music education and vocal and piano performance. She hopes to gain her masters and PhD in these fields as well.

renda ann Foxhoven age 60 of Crofton, Nebraska died on Sunday, December 26, 2021 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, SD.

Mass of Christian Burial was on Thursday, December 30, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Crofton with the Rev. Jim Keiter officiating. Burial took place at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery in Crofton.

Pallbearers were Galen Foxhoven, Brock Foxhoven, Justin Foxhoven, Ian Foxhoven, Tuff Foxhoven, Jason Bohlmann, Brady Bohlmann, Shane Wieseler, and Justin Nollette.

Honorary pallbearers were Nicole Bohlmann, Wendy Wieseler, Joslyn Nollette, Jody Foxhoven, Erin Foxhoven, granddaughters – Brianna Bohlmann, Ellie Foxhoven, Maci Foxhoven, Layla Foxhoven, Jazzmyn Wieseler, Zoey Wieseler, and Bexley Nollette.

Brenda Ann was born on June 24, 1961 in Sioux City, Iowa to Ewald “Bill” and Marlene (Paulsen) Boecker.

She was baptized and received her First Holy Communion at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. She attended St. Rose School and attended Crofton High School. She married Galen Foxhoven on November 11, 1978 in Crofton, NE. Brenda was the “Backbone” of Foxhoven Farms. She was a stay at home mother, milked cows for 20+ years, toted children to 18 • Nebraska Angus Association News • Spring Issue • 2022

the barn swing in the wee hours of the morning. Brenda was the definition of Hospitality.

Her hobbies were planting flowers, mowing her yard “straight”, cooking, baking cakes, camping/ boating, and most importantly spending time with her 10 grandchildren, and family. She was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Christian Mothers, and was a Crofton American Legion Auxiliary member.

Brenda is survived by her husband Galen of 43 years; five children and spouses Nicole (Jason) Bohlmann of Yankton, SD (their children Brianna & Brady), Wendy (Shane) Wieseler of Crofton (their

children Jazzmyn & Zoey), Brock (Jody) Foxhoven of Crofton (their children Tuff, Ellie, & Maci), Justin (Erin) Foxhoven of Crofton (their children Ian & Layla), Joslyn (Justin) Nollette of Cody, NE (their daughter Bexley); 10 grandchildren; mother Marlene Boecker of Crofton; brother Brett Boecker of Crofton; two sisters Wanda (Casey) Knake of Norfolk, NE; Tracey (Ron) McLain of Lincoln, NE. She was preceded in death by her father Ewald “Bill” Boecker on May 5, 2000; father-in-law Gerald Foxhoven on March 28, 2020; daughter Marie Foxhoven 39 years ago.

Angus Foundation Heifer Package sells for $50,000 Brumfield Angus Farms of Sawyer, Mich. purchases pick of Tehama Angus Ranch fall heifers.

ince 1980, the Angus Foundation Heifer Package has been sold to generate unrestricted funds to support its mission of youth, education and research. This year, Brumfield Angus Farms of Sawyer, Mich. purchased the Foundation Heifer Package, donated by Tehama Angus Ranch of Gerber, Calif. The package sold on Jan. 7, at the start of the National Angus Bull Sale during Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City, Okla., and raised $50,000 to support educational programs and scholarships.

The Borror family generously offered the pick of their fall heifers for the 2022 Angus Foundation Heifer Package. The package also includes free transportation to the buyer’s ranch provided by Lathrop Livestock Transportation, Dundee, Ill., and an advanced reproductive technology package from Trans Ova Genetics, Sioux Center, Iowa.

The 2022 Foundation Heifer Package donated by the Borror family serves as a true testament to their longstanding Angus roots and commitment to producing highquality cattle. A maternal focus has been important since Tehama Angus Ranch was started with the purchase of Bill Borror’s first 4-H project. From one heifer to 50 cows and now 500, the family has a deep heritage within the breed, notably in California where they were the first family to have an Angus bull sale. This focus on desirable maternal traits, coupled with powerful Tehama sires including Tehama Patriarch F028, Tehama Tahoe B767 and Tehama Bonanza E410 results in an elite opportunity for the pick of their fall heifer crop.

“The most generous and thoughtful donors, like Tehama Angus Ranch and Brumfield Angus Farms, are found right here in the Angus breed,” said Thomas Marten, Angus Foundation executive director. “With an outstanding offering from the Borror family and the charitable impact made by Brumfield Angus, this tradition continues forward and provides financial backing for many of the educational opportunities funded through Angus Foundation grants.”
