President’s Message Greetings from Kentucky. As I write this, the weather is still cold and wet, but as most, I am highly anticipating the spring and summer seasons. With Spring, we are invigorated with the new growth and the warmer temperatures. This year, our new calf crop takes on a different look. Record prices are anticipated, and good cattle are in high demand.

Whether you are raising replacement breeding stock, feeder calves, or freezer beef, there is a strong demand. The recent KY Farm Bureau Beef Expo sale was a strong indication that Red Poll cattle are valuable.

Plans are being finalized for the Jr Preview Show to be held in Jefferson City, MO on June 9 – 11, 2023. The juniors have already selected their animals and are spending many hours working with them to prepare for the show. What a life lesson our future leaders are gaining! Please consider supporting the Junior Program with your attendance or a financial contribution.

Another upcoming event this fall will be the National Meeting and Sale. Our Southern States Association has graciously agreed to host this year. As soon as final details are worked out, we will get that information to the membership.

Quality Hay

- How Sweet it is, Brian Zeidner

Part 2

Last fall I shared some of my hay-making experiences with you. We specifically looked at using nitrogen fertilizer, commonly known as urea, on hay fields. I’ve found the benefits of applying urea are many, and include choking out weeds and undesirable plants, greatly increasing my yields and providing me with forages that are high in energy and protein.

I was pleased last spring, when I completed my first cutting, and the off-farm, non-fertilized fields produced less than 2 round bales per acre, while my on-farm nitrogen fertilized ground produced 5.5 round bales per acre!

In this article I thought we would look at three details in this process. Application rates, timing, and the drawbacks. Anyone considering urea application wants to know how much to apply. Urea in our area is available for agricultural purposes at 46% nitrogen. Before first cutting, it is common to apply about 100 lbs. per acre of actual nitrogen. For simplicity, I use 200 lbs. of urea per acre which gives me close to the recommended application rate of nitrogen.

After each cutting, I like to reapply about half as much urea as previously read to boost the crop for the next cutting. So, the approximate per acre rate of the application of 46% urea on grass hay should be: 200 lbs. before first cutting, 100 lbs. before second cutting, and 50 lbs. before third cutting. Urea should be reapplied as soon as possible after a crop is harvested, but timing is critical. As noted in a previous article, rain is needed to incorporate the nitrogen into the soil within a few days, otherwise the product dissipates and is largely ineffective. Even if you cannot reapply urea right away due to dry weather or other constraints, you can still find some benefit from a later treatment, provided you get the needed rain. By the way, extended hot, dry weather will also impact fertilizer performance as will improper pH in your soils.

Urea comes bagged or bulk. I use bagged urea and a spinner spreader to apply it.

This option works well for me as I am farming small acreages and the product is easy for me to handle. I can also manage the timing of the application, being able to load up quickly and cover many acres in a short time, often just before a good rain. With a custom-built cover for the spreader, I can also spread fertilizer during a rain event.

Many farmers understand the potential benefits of using nitrogen on hay but want to know; what are the drawbacks? There are a few things to consider. First, urea is expensive.

The primary material needed to manufacture urea is natural gas, so the cost is directly associated with gas prices. I have paid as little as $300 a ton and as much as $610 a ton, and that price doubled again in our area during the Covid pandemic. Fertilizer purchases can be a major investment each year, and you must weigh the costs and benefits to your hay-making operation.

Second, you may need to consider upgrading some equipment. I used to mow hay with a worn-out, 50-year-old haybine. When I started using urea, I found my mower was just not cutting it - literally! I had to upgrade to a disc mower-conditioner. I also had to start using a tedder to make suitable dry hay.

Finally, I found I needed to be conscientious about where I used fertilizer. The goal is to get the hay to uptake the nitrogen, improving the quality and quantity of the crop.

Misapplication can contribute to nutrient runoff into waterways like wetlands, ponds, streams, and rivers, contributing to reduced water quality and harming those ecosystems. The best way to avoid this is to plan the application ahead of time and establish setbacks in your management plan.

Brian Zeidner and his wife Pat own and operate a 42-acre beef farm in Sugar Run, Pennsylvania and raise custom freezer beef using Red Poll dams. Brian also works as the Member Service Director for Claverack Rural Electric Cooperative, serves as the Chairman of the Bradford County Farmland Preservation board, is the Co-chair of the Northern Tier Industry and Education Consortium and is a United States Air Force veteran. Pat manages the cattle breeding program, is active in several veterans’ groups, and served as a United States Army Combat Nurse.

I have learned a lot about best management practices on my farm by using the resources at my local conservation district. They have provided outstanding educational opportunities and support.I suspect similar resources are available to you as well, as most regions have conservation professionals or soil and water specialists. Progress Starts with

Heifer Selection

Selecting females is always a fun topic in my opinion because in all reality its just that, an opinion. Everyone has an opinion on what they like and what they don’t like and the discussions about why I like this one or why you like that one is always a conversation I like to have with other breeders. Whether it’s selecting the next show heifer or selecting the replacement females in your own herd, everyone has an opinion about what works best for the direction that they want to take their herd.

Just a few months ago, a handful of Red Poll breeders and myself were in Louisville, KY at the North American International Livestock Expo. There are so many varieties of cattle packed into the barns but despite all their differences, I evaluate all of these cattle the same way. Whether I’m looking at babies tied up for the first time in the barn at home, at the national sale looking through the sale cattle, or in a breeder’s field looking at his or her herd, I use the same criteria in my mind to pick the best cattle to fit our operation and our budget. So here’s a little dive into my selection process.

The next criteria I use to judge soundness is correct structure when standing. Some may ask what “correct structure” looks like. For me, I first look at the angle to their shoulder. The ideal shoulder angle is about 45 degrees. If the angle is too straight it can hinder the motion of their front legs and the way their neck ties into the rest of their body.

Next, I look at their top line. Do they roach their top when moving or standing? I, along with most breeders, like it very level. Next, I look at hip structure. Does the hip slope from hooks to pins or is it a very long and level hip, which is what I like. From there I look at the shape and angles from their hip down to their toes. Are they too straight legged or post legged? Do they have too much set to their leg or “sickle hocked”?

The ideal rear leg is about a 45 degree angle when viewed from the side. There are many factors that I consider when evaluating structure, and I could write this entire article about structure because it’s that important to me. Structural soundness directly ties into the longevity and the productiveness of any livestock, and in my opinion it should be one of the top priorities when selecting replacement females.

STRUCTURAL CORRECTNESS

MUSCLE

When I’m looking at livestock, the first, and most important trait I select by is soundness. When I say soundness, I’m not talking about what kind of noises a heifer makes, but in livestock, soundness refers to structural correctness. Good structure is the hardest thing to breed into the next generation of livestock. I’ll repeat that, in case someone skipped the previous sentence. Good structure is the hardest thing to breed into the next generation of livestock. It is incredibly hard to breed a bad structured animal to another bad structured animal and end up with a good structured animal. Structural correctness is something that typically does not change on an animal. You can’t feed good structure. You can’t clip one and fit it up at a show and give it good structure. Good structure is something that is with that animal from the time it is born till the day it dies. Different people see structure differently, so here we are again with opinions coming into play.

Whether I’m at home looking at heifers on grass or looking at heifers in a sale, soundness is my top priority.

Muscle is something that is tied to structure for me because of how the two traits work with each other. Think of a huge, massive body builder. It’s kind of funny to watch them try to reach for something where they have to bend their arms. There’s so much muscle there that it hinders their range of motion. The same concept could be applied to cattle. Now I’m not saying that all extremely heavy muscled livestock are not structurally correct, but I am saying that too much muscle can often affect the way that the animal moves. Think of the exact opposite of a body builder. Someone that is so light muscled that they almost seem clumsy or have poor control of their limbs. There are some females out there in the cattle world that are so light muscled that when they move they look sickly, or frail or again, kind of clumsy.

In my opinion there’s a good middle ground to those extremes. Think of a very active athlete. They typically aren’t bulging with muscles but have a very healthy amount of muscle that allows them to perform the way that their sport or activity requires. A female that is in that good middle ground of muscle shape has enough muscle My criteria for soundness are as follows. First is movement. that she has some expression in her hip, down her quarter and into her How easily does that heifer/cow move around? When that female is stifle. She has some shape in her loin and, when viewed from the rear, on the move, is she laboring or working really hard to move and very tracks wide when on the move and when parked is thick ended. My rigid or does she “float” around very smoothly when she walks? How do all of her muscles, bones and joints work together when she moves? personal goal is not to finish steers for butcher, but if your main purpose when selecting females is producing steers for a feedlot or Does she take a nice long stride or is she missing her stride by a foot?

Movement speaks to the longevity of the animal in the herd. Is this cow finished steer situation, then selecting females with more muscle will probably need to be a higher priority than it would be for someone who sound enough that she will be able to travel long distances for water, is trying to breed for show heifers. grass, hay, mineral, etc. for years and years or is she a structural nightmare that is only going to last a couple years before she can’t comfortably make the trip across the pasture.

BONE/FOOT

BUDGET

Bone is a simple one for me, I don’t think you could ever have too much bone or foot under an animal. I like a female that has a good sized foot and is big boned. For our personal operation that produces show heifers, the more bone the better. While a large foot and bone is ascetically pleasing, A large, well shaped foot allows more surface area at the ground to disperse the bodyweight, which could lead to less compaction on your pastures. Another factor in selecting bone and foot size is for cattle that are in a feedlot or grass-fed scenario, while not 100% true every time, stouter designed animals typically mean heavier muscled animals. When evaluating feet, I look specifically at her toes. I, along with most everyone in the cow business, look for a female whose feet are going to be low maintenance. I desire toes that are even with some toe spread. I like them to sit down on a soft pastern and have a deep heel. Shallow heeled, extremely soft pasterned, long toed females are not desirable in my opinion. However, I’d be lying if I said we have never had to trim feet on mature cows. It’s going to happen that some cows will need a little help with their feet. Management levels and time available to spend taking cows to trim feet should be a factor in the decision for those females.

This one is the easiest one. Everyone has a budget.

Everything in life costs money. If the heifer you like is in your budget, great! You just bought a heifer. But if the heifer you like costs more than you budgeted for: #1-get more money. #2-if you can’t get more money, buy the best female that you can that is in the price range you can afford. #3-If you don’t like the female you can afford with the money you have budgeted, please see #1.

BODY When I think “body” in my head, I’m thinking of rib shape, spring of rib, depth of rib, depth of flank. How much body does this one have? Body shape is many times, but not always, something that can be changed with feed. Also, just letting a tighter gutted or a shallower bodied female mature from a 6 month old calf to a yearling can change her body shape and dimension. Body shape is in the same scenario as bone is for me, I haven’t had a female yet that had too much body shape. For people that are selecting replacements, it might not be as important to have a massive swooping belly like we desire in the show ring, but a good amount of internal dimension is something that I think most breeders can all agree on is a desirable trait.

PEDIGREE When evaluating any animal, good or bad, 99% of the time my first question is “what is this one out of ” or “what bull is this one by?” Knowing what bull sired that calf or what cow that calf is out of is a major tool to use when selecting females. Sometimes the answers make me like that animal even more, and sometimes it makes me cross a bull or cow family off of my “To Use” list. All joking aside, knowing an animal’s pedigree is another one of the tools I use when selecting any animal, not just females. There are pedigrees that are a never miss pedigree, every single one will be good. There are some that are hit or miss, giving you a 50/50 shot you’ll get a “good” one or a “bad” one (I’m using quotes here since a good one or a bad one looks differently to everyone).

Then there’s the never hit pedigrees. Every calf is a miss. The heifers are just common looking and the bulls get banded when they hit the ground. I’ll be the first to say that we have had cows in all three scenarios, with most being in the last two scenarios. Having an understanding of what a certain pedigree typically produces can be a huge help when selecting females. Most breeders using a certain bull can tell you what that bull’s calves will typically do as they mature.

I was planning on leaving names out of here but I feel like this is a good example. Joe and Jim Jackson can tell you how Dolls C Pikeville heifer calves grow and mature vs. how JF Sonny Boy heifers grow and mature. Not because they had a crystal ball telling them the future, but because they used them on different cows and have seen how and where each bull worked and didn’t work. The same could be said for 99% of the breeders in the Red Poll breed that have used the same bull or same cow family for years and years to build their herds. DO NOT BE AFRAID TO ASK BREEDERS ABOUT PEDIGREES.

THE COMBINATION FEMALE This article could really be a book, because there is so much to talk about surrounding the subject of selecting replacement females.

There are so many traits to consider and I’m most likely leaving out a trait or tool that someone else prefers, but this is where I’m going to end it. A term that you may have heard someone use is “the Combination Female”. When my Dad and I are discussing a replacement female for our own operation, in the end, we tend to always look for the combination female. Typically this means that this female puts all the pieces that we are looking for in the neatest, prettiest, most desirable total package. The combination female will not always look the same to all breeders. It all depends on each breeder’s personal goals and the direction they are trying to take their herd. Based on what I have already talked about in this article, my Combination Female is one that is extremely good structured, long fronted, level topped, deep bodied. She has plenty of muscle shape, correct shape to her rear legs and is big boned and big footed. The ideal animal that I try to raise or select is one that will work in any scenario, whether it’s the show ring or as a brood cow out on grass.

Sometimes I think people that don’t show cattle forget that show heifers are only show heifers for maybe 2 years. The rest of their lives they are brood cows, with the goal of producing offspring and hopefully making the owner money. That being said, Miller Family Farm has been very fortunate to be a part of what I consider to be very good Red Poll females.

In my opinion, a few of the best Red Poll cows in the breed in the last 15 years have called Finchville, KY home. I would consider them and several other very good females that we have been a part of, either on our own, or with our customers, Combination Females. They didn’t all look the same; they were different sizes and had different traits that separated themselves from each other. They all had things that I would’ve liked to change about them, but they were truly the Combination Female. They combined the most good traits, in the most attractive package, that did the most things right for our scenario. Find your Combination Female. The one that best fits your scenario. The one that best fits your goals.

So maybe if there’s anything to take away from reading this article, I hope it’s this. The female I pick and the female you pick might be completely different. It doesn’t mean that mine is any better than yours, or yours is any better that mine. Everyone has their own opinions and preferences when selecting replacements for their herd. But as long as the female you chose will help your program get to where your goal is, then you made the right decision.

Junior Spotlight

JACob mulkey

son of Steven and jennifer mulkey 19 years old dahlonega, ga I became very interested in showing cattle as part of my county’s 4-H club and began with a cross bred heifer purchased locally. I really enjoyed it. My family, especially my father, Steven Mulkey decided to start Mulkey Way Farm because we share an interest in cattle. Although Red Poll cattle are no longer very common here in North Georgia, Steven’s grandfather Willie Dowdie and uncle Bobbie Thomas, maintained a sizable Red Poll herd near Dahlonega Georgia.

That herd was dispersed as part of Mr Dowdie’s estate. So Mulkey Way farm began acquiring quality Red Poll seed stock and I started showing them across Georgia. Friends and family whose kids wanted to get started with cattle really enjoyed the Red Poll calves because they are beautiful and gentle. Mulkey Way farm has provided Red Poll heifers to Lumpkin County 4-H club to help these young people get started. I’m now a freshman at University of North Georgia where I plan to pursue teaching. I want to encourage kids to become part of the big world of agriculture.

Farmand Handwork Farm Ranch by hailey Bippus

Growing up in Corning Arkansas in the 1950’s, the Handwork family had a Red Poll cow for milk so they were all familiar with the breed to some extent. During that time until the purchase of the cattle, the families living came from row crops. When rice became the primary crop in Arkansas , Norman transitioned the farm to livestock.The intention was to be able to provide quality beef to family and close friends. In 1977 Norman Handwork and his brother in law Charles acquired a number of Red Poll cattle from another family member. Five years later Norman became the sole proprietor of Handwork Farm and worked to continuously improve the productivity of his stock.

During this time, the Handwork family was growing and expanding along with the seed stock business. Norman and Edwina raised their family on the farm. Brit Bippus, grandson of Norman was raised on the farm and being around cattle all his life it only fits that his first word was bull. In 2018 Norman passed away leaving his wife Edwina and grandson Brit the owners of Handwork farm.

Brit Bippus and wife Hailey have begun making breeding decisions with a number of goals in mind for their cattle. First, is to preserve the high standards that Handwork cattle are known for. Easy caving cows with a wide pelvis and milk to raise fast growing, healthy calves.

They have begun bringing in some new genetics with a focus on level udders with teats which are easily suckled by calves. New bulls have arrived at Handwork Farm purchased from well known Red Poll breeders. Brit looks for bulls with length, defined muscling, powerful shoulders and rump.

Moderate birth weights are best. Body capacity with depth as well as sturdy feet are a priority in both males and females.

They hope to preserve the legacy that Norman Handwork started almost 50 years ago while moving ahead into the future.
