all, this is the time of year when we’re busy harvesting, the corn, the beans, the calves. We find out if that new sire you selected nearly two years ago is really the one you thought would move your herd towards your operation goals. It’s one of my favorite times of year.

We’ll soon transition to new leadership for our Association, at our Annual meeting and banquet in Kearney on December 2nd. Many thanks goes to our outgoing President Brock Foxhoven from Crofton. His leadership and willingness to answer every call or text I send him is much appreciated. He’s there when our Association needed him. I’ll miss his steady influence. He’ll still be available for input as a member of the Board and Past President, but I believe our Past Presidents enjoy their last year of relaxed service on the board.

Seven members exhibited aged bulls, weaned bull calves and heifers, cow/calf and bred heifers. A highlight this year for the association was our partnership with RFDTV to promote our association and Angus cattle and of course Certified Angus Beef.

current Queen Reagan Skow who traveled to the show and assist us in our promotion efforts. She did a fabulous job the day she joined us and I am ever thankful for her efforts. I look forward to her joining our evening of Celebration at our Annual Banquet in Kearney and learning more about her goals for the future.

We’re still finalizing our lineup of speakers. Please watch our website for those updates. Hotel rooms should be reserved by November 17th, 2017, and banquet reservations are due November 25th.

A

s I sit down to right this, I can only imagine this finds most of you in the same position as me, calving season and putting the final touches into your sale offering. The relentless hours of checking cows and trying to keep your feet underneath you are starting to catch up.

It is still easy to get excited though knowing that there's a cow calving that you were so excited about, even before she was bred last spring. There are endless thoughts that go through my mind when mating cows to A.I. them, a guy can drive himself crazy thinking about all the mating options he could use just to inseminate one cow. Now more than ever is when your mating will determine a profit for the year. I have no doubt in my mind that Nebraska Angus Seedstock producers are giving their all to put out all the information possible to make your next mating investment an easy and profitable one.

ducers. These are hands down some of the classiest guys in the nation. They are always willing to help out and make this breed even greater than it already is. Seven Nebraska Angus Association members brought their finest animals from their breeding programs to this year's Husker Harvest Days exhibit. Traffic through the tent was good all three days of the show. A new highlight for our Association was a partnership with RFD-TV promoting Angus beef and our association during the show. We were able to distribute samples of Certified Angus Beef summer sausage to show visitors as part of RFD-TV's exhibit. Nebraska Angus Queen Reagan Skow joined on Tuesday during the show and helped distribute samples while sharing beef nutrition facts to show attendees. Others who helped distribute and prepare samples throughout the week were Board Members Brock Foxhoven (President), Dave Nichols (Vice-President) and Directors John Carlson and Danny Poss. Regional Mgr Drew Feller also helped hand out samples. Past President Lori Wagner and member Tiffany Stoller assisted in the preparation of the samples for distribution. We certainly thank RFD-TV, anchor Mark Oppold, Marketing Director Jenna Daley, and the entire RFD-TV crew for their hospitality and opportunity to promote Angus cattle and the Nebraska Angus Association on this international stage.

hat an outstanding year 2017 has gifted us as Nebraska Jr. Angus members and breeders! This year’s annual state Angus show was once again held in Broken Bow. The state Angus show is always a great way to help prepare the members for the upcoming Jr. Nationals.

Competitions range from public speaking to showmanship give an option for each individual member to put their skill in the spotlight.

At our annual state show meeting we elected the new following members as officers, President – Dakota Lovett, 1st Vice President – Montana Lovett, 2ND Vice President – Reagan Skow , Secretary/Treasurer- Miranda Raithel, Historian- Kyra Meyer, Membership Director- Caitlin Nelson, Director – Miles Stagemeyer, and Director- Jace Stagemeyer. Along with adding new officer positions, new advisors were named. Brandon and Kami Meyer were named advisors following outgoing advisors Jeff and Sandy Lovett. Thank you, mom, and dad for your contribution to our junior membership, and thank you to the Meyers for stepping up into the leadership role as advisors.

That night at our banquet Reagan Skow was named 2017-2018 Nebraska Angus Queen. I would like to say how excited I am to be working with such a talented team of individuals as the ones listed above. Our summer state show was held the next day, and the quality of cattle was not short. As not only a junior, but an Angus breeder I was proud to see the amount of just plain good cattle that took the stage with all ages of exhibiters on the halters. It makes me have great faith in our breed and its future breeders upcoming in our state association.

The National Jr. Angus Show was in Des. Moines this year and man was it warm. Nebraska was very competitive at this year’s nationals with top placing’s in cattle as well as successful contest teams. All three Junior, Intermediate, and Senior teams made it too the buzzer round with quiz bowl.

The Nebraska juniors are known for their cook off skills, and this year we prevailed. The Intermediate team placed 2nd and the junior team placed 1st. Nebraska was also named 3rd in Herdsman ship and 5th in our Junior scrapbook contest. Personally, I am very excited to eat some amazing cheese curbs next year at the 2018 National Jr. Angus Show which will be held in Madison, Wisconsin. tate to ask. Shortly after Jr. Nationals we had 5 juniors representing our association in Raleigh, North Carolina for the Angus LEAD Conference. They were Miranda Raithel, Kyra Meyer, Regan Skow, Rachel Smith, and myself.

Lastly, the Nebraska State Fair was very successful for many. Angus members were had a lot of success in the showring. Champions FFA showman went to, Kyra Meyer. Senior 4-H showman went to Jace Stagemeyer.

Champion 4-h breeding heifer went to Mikayla Samulesen. Champion FFA Steer went to Caitlin Nelson with her crossbred. On September 3rd, we held our annual state fair Angus meeting.

Many items were discussed. An exciting announcement is that, our junior association decided to recently purchase an association trailer. The trailer will be used to carry and store tack and belongings of the junior association. This trailer will be going too all our events and shows including Jr. Nationals.

Committees were decided for our annual Winter Preview Show. The dates to this is Dec. 1st -3rd. Miranda Raithel was named chairmen of this years Semen Auction coming up the night of December 2nd in Kearney, Nebraska. We will have a very high quality amount of bull semen to auction off. Along with the semen auction we have a silent auction as well, Montana Lovett was named to chair this year’s silent auction. We hope you make it to Kearney that weekend! On a personal note, I would like to say how very excited and honored I am to have been elected as president of our junior members. Best of luck to juniors and their families with fall activities from harvest, to picking out that next show heifer.

Our Angus Family OBITUARY Ronald Armstrong

Ronald Armstrong, 69 of Big Springs, former longtime Brule resident, passed away Thursday, March 16, 2017 at University of Colorado Hospital in Denver, CO. Ron was born February 26, 1948 at Ogallala, Nebraska to Ernie and Leona (Harms) Armstrong. He graduated from Brule High School in 1966 and went on to graduate from Kearney State College.

Ron taught school for a few years in Hershey before returning to the Brule area to farm with his dad. On August 14, 1984, Ron married Betty Zastrow at St. John's Lutheran Church in Brule. The couple made their home on the family farm and their union was blessed with 2 daughters, Val and Vicky. Ron enjoyed living on the farm until November of 2016, when he transitioned to living in Big Springs.

Ron loved farming, and he used the farm experience as an opportunity to employ many of the young men of the area, most of whom ended up adopting Ron as their mentor. Ron was a gregarious jokester. He made fast friends and had a knack for making people smile. His lightheartedness was easy to recognize and made him very approachable. Ron loved attending cattle sales and shows whether he was in the market to buy or not, it was a social event. He loved telling a good story, and was known to add an embellishment or two on occasion. Ron and Betty were blessed to have had the opportunity to travel extensively together, having visited all of the 48 contiguous United States in just 4 years. They made many great memories throughout their travels, the bulk of which will be recalled with fondness and the occasional chuckle. Ron had a special place in his heart for his dog, Cocoa, and his grand dog, Brendahl. He was dedicated to his family, and rarely, if ever, missed a chance to

support his girls in their endeavors.

From helping Vicky with FFA activities to attending the collegiate volleyball games that Valerie coached, Ron made the effort to be there for his children, even into their adulthood.

Ron was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church in Brule. He had belonged to the Flatlanders Car Club, where he enjoyed showing his beloved '36 Chevy. Ron was a longtime member of the Brule Lions Club, where he'd served as President, as well as the Nebraska Angus Association. He also sang in the Cowboy Capital Chorus for several years.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, who he often playfully referred to as his "current wife," Betty Armstrong of Big Springs; 2 daughters, Val Armstrong of Binghamton, NY, Vicky Armstrong of Maywood; aunt, Valera (Donald) Parke of Northglenn, CO; along with many cousins and friends.

A memorial has been established in Ron's memory for later designation.

Condolences may be shared at prairiehillsfuneralhome.com, where the service will be streamed live for those unable to attend.

Services were Friday, March 24, 2017 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Brule, NE with Pastor Jon Dickmander officiating. Burial was in the Brule Cemetery.

OBITUARY Bette Marie Petersen Votaw

Bette was born in North Platte on Jan. 17, 1925, to Fred Christian Petersen and Elizabeth Katherine Brodbeck Petersen. Bette graduated from North Platte High School in 1942, where she was the yearbook editor.

She became a lifelong Husker when

she attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, from which she earned her bachelor’s degree in business education in 1946. Following graduation, Bette was employed by the Nebraska Department of Health and Social Services in North Platte.

She then joined the Farmers Home Administration as an administrative assistant.

On April 10, 1950, Bette was united in marriage to Eli B. Votaw Jr. at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church of North Platte, where she was a lifelong member. As a new bride, Bette was very determined to become an intricate part of the rural life. Her passion paid off as she and Eli diligently worked together to build the historic E Bar V Angus Ranch. Two cherished accomplishments were bestowed upon Bette and Eli in recognition of their contributions to the improvement and advancement of Angus in the United States. The American Angus Association inducted them into the Angus Heritage Foundation in 1999, and in 2006, the Nebraska Angus Association presented them with the Nebraska Pioneer Producer Award.

Bette was well-known for serving in leadership roles in her local and agricultural communities. She was a charter member of the American Angus Auxiliary, in which she enjoyed serving on its many committees and held various officer positions including the national president in 1993-94.

During her tenure as president, she helped host the seventh World Angus Forum. Her long, outstanding and empowering service in the Angus Auxiliary earned her the Distinguished Woman of the Year award in 2012.

Bette’s passion for cattle also led her to serve on numerous committees for the Nebraska Cattlewomen

and the Nebraska Angus Auxiliary.

Her influence extended far beyond agriculture, as she was active with numerous community committees. This included the Nebraska Public Broadcasting Board in the 1980s, and as a persistent advocate for encouraging women, Bette served on the Rape and Domestic Violence Board for Lincoln County.

Stylish, and always with her classic beauty, Bette would put a smile on everyone’s face as she stepped out of the driver’s side of the pickup truck, after hauling her daughters and their show calves to state and national cattle shows. She could roll up her sleeves and work hard, yet had style and grace that could light up a room. Bette was also very proud of the accomplishments of her children and grandchildren, all of whom could count her in their corner cheering them on. She also gave wonderful business advice and was a whiz in geography. We will all dearly miss her endearing smile and quick wit, amongst her other many wonderful characteristics.

Preceding her in death were Bette’s husband of 62 years, Eli Votaw; her beloved daughter, Christine Sue Votaw Vinton; son-in-law, Patrick Donald Vinton; her parents; and brother, Dr. Fred Petersen.

Those left to cherish her memory are her two daughters, Kathy Marie (Louis) Dubs of Billings, Montana, and Kerri Ann (Steven) Kliewer of Henderson; grandchildren, Merici Vinton (Dominic Campbell) of London, England, Katrina (Adam) Petersen of Billings, Montana, Allison Dubs of Billings, Montana, Chase Eli Kliewer of Omaha, Garrett Kliewer of New York City and Mariah Kliewer of New York City; great-grandchildren, Hopkins Vinton Campbell and Reagan Petersen; and many nieces and nephews.

OBITUARY Judith Ann Herbster

Judith Ann Herbster of Falls City, Nebraska, passed away May 2, 2017 in Falls City. She was born April 2, 1955 in WaKeeney, Kansas to Robert E. Wagg and Doris A. (Armbruster Wagg) Peterson. Judy spent her childhood in Ogallah, Kansas.

Judy loved children, and was a daycare provider upon her 1973 graduation from Trego Community High School in Wakeeney, Kansas until she became a Conklin Company distributor in 1979. Little did she know, her decision to join Conklin would change her life forever.

Meeting her husband, Charles W. Herbster, through the company she already loved, on June 26, 1982, they were married at Christview Christian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

To say Judy was passionate about Conklin was an understatement. She was a champion of the business and paved the way for women in the company. Judy was the first woman President’s Club member in 1980; the first female Director in 1982; the first Conklin Director to develop 5 directors in one year; and the first lady to receive the “Director of the Year” Award in 1985. A role model for many, Judy became the first and only woman president of the Conklin company in its 48-year history. Seeing the potential in the corporation, Charles W. Herbster and Judy purchased the company in 1992. Soon after, she was appointed as President and Chief Operating Officer and served as such until her passing.

In addition to her involvement with Conklin, she worked hand in hand with Charles at their companies: Herbster Angus Farms, Inc. and Carico Farms, Inc., Falls City, Nebraska. All three operations are rooted

deeply in agriculture, and Judy was dedicated and instrumental to their unparalleled success.

Judy said recently, “Live everyday with no regrets.” She put her heart into everything including cooking meals for the farm family, inspiring corporate excellence and caring for those in need. Judy was a dear friend and uplifting mentor who demanded perfection, pushed for greatness and jubilantly celebrated success. Judy’s legacy of hard-work, desire to serve and devotion to excellence will remain in the lives of every person she met.

From her humble youth in WaKeeney to becoming the President and Chief Operating Officer of nearly a 100 million dollar company, she lived the American Dream!

Judy was a member of Bible Baptist Church at Lincoln, Nebraska and the American Angus Association.

Judy is survived by her husband, Charles W. Herbster of Falls City, parents, Robert E. Wagg of Falls City and Doris A. Peterson of Platte City, MO, a brother, Duane Wagg of Platte City, sisters, Sandy Schaben and her husband Jim of Columbus, NE, Anna Cooper and her husband Mark of Platte City, MO, Sherri Willgohs and her husband Dan of Liberty, MO, and 7 nieces and nephews and 10 great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister in infancy, Jeanne.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, May 11, 2017 at 1:30 PM at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, in Liberty, MO. Memorials may be made to the Judith A. BoARD Congratulations to Michaela Clowser of Milford, NE. First elected to the National Jr. Angus Board in July 2016, Michaela begins her second year of service on the board by being selected as Membership Chair for the coming year.

Just as the title of the Committee describes, one of Michaela’s jobs is membership recruitment. But there are so many more duties to this chairmanship than just recruitment of new members. At next year’s NJAS in Madison, WI; Michaela will be responsible for selecting all the topics for the contests such as speech, graphic design, writing con-

test and posters, just to name a few.

During the LEAD conferences, she plans and organizes the leadership workshops. Michaela also plans and coordinates the Raising The Bar conferences and is involved in designing a new membership conference called STAR for State Training and Angus Retreat.

All of the above responsibilities are in addition to the expectations she has a member of the Jr. Board, which include attending their regular Board meetings, and working at various NJAA shows. All of this is in addition to her college class work and responsibilities as a senior at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where she is on the livestock judging team and majoring in Agriculture Economics with a minor in Animal Science. Upon earning her degree,

she plans to continue her education in Ag Econ and expanding her Angus herd. She enjoys traveling, spending time with her friends and family, and helping coach her local 4-H livestock judging team.
