eBEEF.org News Beef Improvement Federation Summary The 2018 BIF meetings were recently held in Loveland, CO, with over 600 people in attendance. This year’s meeting marked the 50th anniversary of BIF. With this milestone came an opportunity to reflect back on accomplishments and give thought to the direction of activities going forward. One opportunity that was raised throughout several talks during the meeting was the need to collect phenotypes that are economically relevant but have largely only been collected in research settings. Examples include animal health, healthfulness of beef products, and sensitivity to environmental stress. Other phenotypes such as routine carcass data and female fertility have some available EPD, but additional phenotypes are critically needed. Discussion of the need to collect these data and the need to engage other sectors of the industry (commercial cow/calf, feedyards, packing plants) in genetic improvement of beef cattle were clearly identified as priorities. Dr. Dorian Garrick outlined a listing of traits that should receive focus going forward in his talk entitled Focus On Traits Not Considered. In his Thursday morning wrap-up talk, Dr. John Pollak charged BIF with the task of bringing new ideas relative to novel traits to fruition as the organization outlines goals for the next 50 years. Several talks highlighted accomplishments of breeds that

8

have now released “single-step” genomic evaluations for the first time. Interestingly, there was much discussion on shifting organizational focus to help make selection decisions simpler. One such talk was from Dr. Jason Archer who discussed a project in collaboration with the American Angus Association to combine economic modelling and survey information to inform selection index development. As usual, there were many informative talks at the annual BIF meetings. Recorded talks can be accessed at www. bifconference.com. The 2019 BIF meetings will be held June 18-21 in Brookings, S.D. Informational Videos There are currently 153 videos available on YouTube from eBEEF.org. They include answers to FAQs, introductions to factsheets, extension educational presentations and scientific presentations. The videos are available on the eBEEF YouTube channel. g

COMMITED TO GENETIC PROFIT TRAITS RANCH TO FEEDLOT FOR OVER 37 YEARS

Is BRISKET at the ranch or DROOPY in the feedlot reducing your profitability? If so, our HIGH ALTITUDE genetics can help solve the problem. Less death loss, more pounds to sell. Build your herd with FEED EFFICIENCY, LONGEVITY, MATERNAL PERFORMANCE and FUNCTIONALITY. The proof is with our customers!

About 7 years ago we found Gary Volk and what a herd he has built. The disposition of his cattle is second to none and we have bought over 100 of his heifers and several of his bulls. The first year we ran his bulls, our weaning weights came up 25 lbs. and now they are up 55 lbs. We still have all 7 of the first bulls that we bought from Gary. They are still breeding cows, easy to gather and are always with the cows. I have calved over 100 of Gary’s heifers and have not had one of them fail me. They all bred back, were easy to calve and they didn’t need a bunch of tender love and care to do it. We are extremely pleased with Gary’s bulls and heifers. I encourage people to try them and I guarantee they will love them. - Clay Carver, Nucla, Colorado.

Tried and True ........... Testimonials

As part of the American Salers Association’s Partner’s in Agriculture YouTube Video Series, we will be bringing you Tried and True Testimonials from rancher’s and cattlemen using Salers influence genetics in their cow herd. You can hear firsthand how the cattle are working for them. We start off the series with a couple of longtime users of Salers genetics that are no strangers to the breed. Watch for more Tried and True Testimonials in upcoming issues and on YouTube.

MONTANA

WYOMING

The Hougen family has been ranching outside Melstone, Montana, since 1944. Tom and son Alan and their families, run some 1500 Salers influence cows on their eastern central Montana operation. They started buying Salers bulls back in 1983 and haven’t looked back. Tom says, “I believe the key for any rancher is the number of calves that you wean and the Salers mother cows just can’t be beat.”

Joe Thomas, Turnell Cattle Company, Meeteetse, Wyoming, has been a part of using Salers genetics since the late 80’s. The current cow/calf operation sits at 5,800 feet elevation and currently uses mostly Optimizer bulls finding the 50-50 blend of Salers and Angus genetics is the ‘perfect combination’ for their cow herd. Joe says of using the cattle, “we started using them in the late 80’s and haven’t changed since. I can’t see us changing. The cattle work too well for us.”

Tom says the benefits begin at calving when those Salers calves hit the ground. “The calves are very thrifty and really grow. We run in big country and were calving in 2 feet of snow in 2018. The mothering ability and calf vigor are very important to our operation.” Another trait that has impressed them over the years and has become even more important is how good their feet and legs stay sound. “Salers, structurally in their feet, are just tremendous, much better than some breeds. This adds to their longevity. The longevity we see is impressive. We have cows that are 10, 11 and 12 years old and their steer calves will stand with the best of them on the 700 we sell.” “The Salers/Angus cross really fits the range well. Our cows will be on summer pastures and weigh in that 12001250 pound range. They will wean a calf between 600 and 640 pounds in the fall, and we don’t calve early. So, I think the 2 breeds really complement themselves. I’m a firm believer you have to have some Salers in that cow,” confirms Tom. The calves have sold to the same repeat buyer since 1991. Buying the calves for 26 years, Tom says, “It’s a family operation that has been buying them – they wouldn’t keep buying them if they didn’t work.” Commenting on crossbreeding Tom adds, “It’s proven the heterosis is there. The data is there showing it. As a commercial cow/calf producer, I can’t imagine not crossbreeding. It has work so well.” Tried and True.

AMERICAN SALERS

“Our primary need is for the cow to get that calf up and get rolling in the middle of a snowstorm. The mothering ability of a Salers cow is just fantastic. Then the cattle need to work in the feedlot. We have seen terrific feed conversion in the cattle we have fed. The third place they need to work is on the rail. We want them to grade and produce Yield Grade 1 and 2 carcasses,” says Joe. Joe is a big believer in heterosis and loves the Salers influence, “We have to have mothering ability and calf vigor. On those stormy days we need that calf up and going. They have to get it done on their own. We go out in the morning and pair up, tag and move the new calves out to the big pasture.” “The cattle work for you, we don’t work for them, which is the way it should be,” states Joe. “We sort all of our cattle on foot in the corral and they are just tremendous. The disposition is great. I won’t have a cow that will chase me over the fence,” Joe comments. “We used to run up to 12,000’ elevation on a Forest Service Permit at the other place and we never had any issues with Brisket Disease. We know the cattle can solve this issue for producers having problems with low PAP scores,” Joe adds. “The cattle are very sound and very hardy. The bulls we have had can last up to 7-8 years of age and still get it done. We had one cow that lasted to 21 years of age and she was still producing a good calf. The cattle hold up well with their feet and legs. They really have some longevity.” Tried and True. g

Heterosis Underutilized! Rancher and college professor, Ken Odde, is passionate about the cattle business and passionate about education. This South Dakota native has always been one to take the science accumulated and boil it down in to laymen’s terms and ‘sort the chaff’ if you will into what the commercial cattlemen needs to know. He has always been one to get down to the information that stands to make a commercial cattleman more money. He will be one of the featured speakers in ASA’s upcoming Partners In Agriculture YouTube Video Series soon to be released. These speakers will bring you educational information designed to add to and enhance the knowledge and information available to your cattle operation. He gives us insight into one of the greatest opportunities in the cattle business – Heterosis. To many, this is a forgotten opportunity. We have known about the advantages of crossbreeding

for decades, yet some people still choose to straight breed as commercial producers, forgetting about all that crossbreeding has to offer. He reflects on an earlier time in the industry, “I remember a time in the cattle business when there were really only 2 breeds of cattle – Hereford was the largest and Angus – those were the 2 main breeds. Then in the 1970’s we began to import Continental cattle and we began to see some crossbreeding take place. There were breeding systems designed that maximize heterosis. There were some great opportunities with crossbreeding. On the other hand, some of those systems are often times challenging (complicated), and sometimes challenging to manage. We forgot that we have a lot of big operations that run in big pastures and are not able to run bulls of one breed in one pasture and bulls of another breed in another pasture. In our South Dakota operation, we may lease ground and we may run cows with another neighbor at times and it is not always easy to make those breeding systems work in commercial cattle breeding environments.” “As an industry, we are not nearly as effective in utilizing heterosis as we could be. Particularly, maternal heterosis, which is where I think we are underutilizing it the most.” Odde stresses the benefits we know exist when running a crossbred cow versus a straightbred cow, “Specifically when you look at the traits of fertility and longevity - that is where I think we are missing the boat. If we look at the maternal heterosis effect, especially with longevity, it has a rather significant affect. It is a really important trait because the cost to develop a replacement heifer is high relative to the cost to maintain a mature cow. So the ability to get 1 or 2 more calves out of that cow is a huge economic effect. Lifetime productivity is really affected by heterosis.” The affect it has on profitability cannot be emphasized enough. “Complementarity of breeds in addition to heterosis clearly has some obvious benefits,” adds Odde. When 2 breeds offer complementarity to each other it is a win-win situation for using them in a crossbreeding program. As an example, Angus cattle tend to marble very well. Salers cattle are the highest marbling Continental breed, so they bring a lot to the table in that regard as well, but there are still benefits to be added when crossing to Angus. However, when looking at Yield Grade and cutability, Angus cattle would tend to be fatter and have poorer (larger) numerical Yield Grades and poorer cutability. Salers cattle, on the other hand, would have distinct advantage in leanness and muscling resulting in superior Yield grade and cutability. So, when you consider how these breeds complement each other for carcass quality, it is a terrific opportunity to get the best of both worlds and have a lean, muscular carcass with superior marbling. “I would argue that if you have a predominantly Angus cow herd,” Odde continues, “and you really are interested in profitability, which I think is heavily influenced by fertility and longevity. You clearly ought to be

18

SEPTEMBER 2018

interested in breeds other than Angus (bulls) for going on to that cow herd. That is clearly what you need to do in order to maximize the use of heterosis.” The crossbred females from that cross should be kept back in to your herd and will then allow a commercial producer to begin taking advantage of maternal heterosis. “Higher levels of management are going to be required in order to make a profit in the cow business today. Be it in an extensive or intensive operation, the best managers will use the best technologies available. Cost and the ability to manage cost is absolutely critical requirement by good management. You have to be able to manage both the production side and the cost side. The best managers are looking every day for new technology that will help their operation. They may not adapt everything, but will sort through and use the ones that make sense.” The best managers will be utilizing crossbreeding to obtain the crossbred cow and capitalize on the benefits of maternal heterosis. The data shows a 25% advantage in pounds of calf weaned per cow exposed over the lifetime of the cow. This is a combination of added fertility and longevity in the crossbred cow as was touched on earlier. Odde sees a time in the not too distant future when individual cows could be bred according to their individual breed composition via artificial insemination, “With the advent of genomics, we are at the point of determining breed composition and we can maximize heterosis on each individual,” he says. Utilizing this information obtained through DNA testing may be economically feasible with the cost of DNA testing coming down all the time. It truly is an exciting time in the beef industry. Dr. Ken Odde is currently a professor at Kansas State University. He has been a Department head of Animal Science at Kansas State University and North Dakota State University, in addition to 8 years in private industry and previously, a professor at Colorado State University where he was this author’s graduate school advisor and undergraduate instructor and professor. g

Salers cows are genetically designed to be efficient forage harvesters. Their fertility, longevity and legendary calf survivability generate the most pounds of calf possible from your pastures with the least amount of labor. And a 2001 Montana State research study demonstrated that cows of Salers genetic origin will graze higher elevations than cows of other breeds. All of which makes them the most efficient self-propelled forage harvesters you can put in your pasture! Visit our website at www.macdonaldranches.com to learn more.

American Salers Junior Association

Junior National Show “Salers, the Natural Choice” and Arkansas, the Natural State - two respectful associations that went together like butter and biscuits during the week of Salers Junior National. Once again, the American Salers Junior Association indulged in southern culture for a week full of memories, friendly competition, and personal growth. The 2018 American Salers Junior National was held during July 9th through the 13th in the northwestern corner of Arkansas, in the bustling city of Jonesboro. While the heat may

have been comparable to living on the sun’s surface some days and the bugs appeared to be the size of small children, neither of these obstacles stopped the youth from giving their absolute best all week! The fun began on Monday night with a surprise guest speaker. Mr. Greg Peterson, the oldest son from the famous Peterson Farm Bros, stopped by to sing some of his family’s famous melodies and to encourage the juniors to become advocates for agriculture. The Peterson Farm Bros made their claim to fame on YouTube by posting parodies of popular songs with the same recurring theme of agriculture. Even some of the adults began feeling the beat and started dancing around with the juniors. As the week progressed, the excitement and anticipation that had been built up from waiting a whole year, exploded throughout the barn. In

every corner, in every stall, in every aisle there were juniors running about playing endless barn games, teams huddling together to practice the perfect sales pitch for Team Sales, friendships being created, and the excitement didn’t stop there. A certain few contests saw a massive jump in participation, one of the most evident was the Paul Trueblood Showdown. This showdown began five years ago in memory of Mr. Scott Trueblood’s uncle Paul. The rules of this competition are simple, a youth must completely fit their calf in under 45 minutes and then show the animal. In years past, less than fifteen kids competed for the title of Paul Trueblood Showman, this year there were thirty youth that felt the drive to compete! If a spectator wanted to see what the heart of the American Salers Junior Association looked like, watching the Paul Trueblood Showdown would be an excellent example. The dedication and hard work our youth have had instilled in them from their upbringings are on full display as they compete. By the end of the week, everyone was ready for the highly anticipated American Salers Junior Show. It would be an

understatement to say that the cattle brought to Junior National were good. The cattle that came to this year’s Junior National could easily be compared to past National Champions of Denver, American Royal, and the NAILE. A job well done should be extended to every exhibitor that participated in the show, as should a thank you to all the breeders that have helped propel the youths’ herds. Without support from breeders or contest sponsors, Junior National would not be as successful or momentous as it was this year and in years prior. As we close the book on the 2018 American Salers Junior National, it is exciting to announce the location of the 2019 American Salers Junior National. Ladies and gentlemen, mark your maps because the 2019 American Salers Junior National will be hosted in the great Show-Me State of Missouri! More details are to come about the location, dates, and other necessary information. For now, start building that excitement and planning those summer schedules, we have a Junior National coming in a few short months. g

Preconditioned vs Weaned Calves

Can Affect Bunk Space Requirements in Feedlots Mariah Woolsoncroft, Nebraska Extension Educator Weaning season is right around the corner for producers. However, some producers do not think about how their management techniques can affect calves when entering the feedlot. These techniques can affect how calves are managed when received at the feedlot and subsequently, can determine the number of head in a pen during receiving. This article will review the difference in bunk space requirements between calves that are weaned and shipped immediately to a different location compared to calves that are preconditioned before entering the feedlot. Preconditioning is defined by calves that are vaccinated, have a nutritional background, and have had time to adjust to weaning before being shipped to a new location.

Time to Adjust

Bunk space can vary depending on if calves were preconditioned or not prior to entering the feedlot. Photo courtesy of Troy Walz

There are multiple ways to ease stressors on calves before entering the feedlot. One practice is waiting a week or longer after weaning before moving the calves to a new location or sale barn. This allows calves to adapt slowly to changes. Allowing calves time to adjust after weaning before moving locations is called “precondition”. Additionally, limiting the number of calves in small groups helps ease the transition to group housing. By limiting the number of head, calves are allowed to adapt to the social interactions of group housing. This can decrease a calf’s stress level. This strategy can be translated into a feedlot as well, because calves need time to adapt to a new location and new calves in a pen.

Pathogens

Another concern to be aware of is pathogens. Pathogen loads could vary in preconditioned calves’ versus weaned calves. Preconditioned calves could potentially have a built up immune system against pathogens because of the social interaction prior to entering the feedlot. Weaning, change of diets, transportation, and change of housing can all be stressful events for calves, thus suppressing the immune system which weakens its ability to fight pathogens present in feedlots.

Rumen Development

Rumen development cannot be overlooked while a calf is being weaned. Rumen development is extremely important for calf health because it takes 4 to 6 months before the rumen is completely developed. Feeding high starches (grains) can increase the rate of rumen growth and development. Calves that are preconditioned could potentially have had access to long stem forages and grains which would aid in gut health. The calves that have access to forages or grains could also potentially be bunk broke because the

32

dams may have taught the calves what is in a feed bunk. This can also affect bunk space in a feedlot for calves that are preconditioned or weaned.

Bunk Space

The issues listed above, can affect the number of calves in a pen at a feedlot. According to Harner and Murphy, the recommended bunk space for backgrounding feedlots (500 to 700 lb calves) is 18 inches per head. Younger cattle are more likely to eat together which requires more bunk space compared to finishing cattle. However, one needs to consider the differences in bunk space for preconditioned calves and weaned calves in a feedlot. Finishing cattle have a bunk space of 9 to 12 inches per head. These differences in bunk space are due to the factors described above.

Water

Water consumption is another factor that can aid in calf health. Cattle can consume 8 to 20 gallons per 1,000 pound animal unit. This will vary depending on the weather and time

SEPTEMBER 2018

of the year. Having fresh clean water for calves is important for rumen development. Calves should have unlimited clean water at all times.

Enhancing

Quality

Conclusion

Bunk space can vary depending on if calves were preconditioned or not prior to entering the feedlot. If calves are preconditioned, they have been exposed to group housing and can have a more tolerable immune system compared to the calves that were weaned and sent to a sale barn then to the feedlot. If calves are bunk broke, vaccinated, and have had social interactions prior to entering the feedlot this can result in more head in a receiving pen. On the contrary, calves that are weaned and sent to a sale barn without preconditioning, and are not familiarized with social interactions, could require more bunk space in a receiving pen. g

SEPTEMBER 2018

Our Story I was born and raised in southwest MN on the Buffalo Ridge where my family has called home for over a century. I attended South Dakota State University and received degrees in Animal Science and General Agriculture and returned home in the spring of 2008 to pursue my passion in the cattle industry. I was impressed with what Salers cattle had to offer both on the cow calf side as well as in the feedlot, so I started to use the breed. The cow herd grew from 60 cows to now over 300, 150 of which are registered Salers. All the calves are finished out in our feedlot. I have been very pleased with what the Salers have done from improved reproduction and calf vigor through performance in the feedlot. My family and I look forward to supplying Salers seedstock in the near future.
