ow! It is hard to believe how much activity has occurred since I last wrote a column…

Tour planning group has met twice, plans are well underway, check out our ad promoting the tour on page 15.

The State Jr. show and National Jr. show have come and gone, with outstanding participation on both levels.

See the Nathional show placings and awards our young members have earned with their hard work and participation, on pages 12-13.

We’re very excited to announce that our own outgoing Nebraska Angus Queen Reagan Skow has been selected to compete for the title of Miss American Angus at this year’s National Angus Convention in Columbus, OH. Good luck to you Reagan, I’ve seen you in action as Nebraska Angus Queen and I feel you will do very well. We’re very proud of you.

Also our thanks to our outgoing Nebraska Jr. member who completed her two year term as a member of our National Jr Angus Board of Directors.

We have a tribute to Michaela Clowser in our recent Nebraska Angus Directory. Michaela did a marvelous job as a National Jr. Director and we’re very proud of her accomplishments!!

We’re approaching our busiest months as an association. Our schedule just weeks ahead shows a wide range of activities, shows, events and meetings that should meet the needs of many of our membership, readers, fellow cattlemen, customers and producers.

• The ROV show in Grand Island at the Nebraska State Fair is just one of 18 ROV shows across the nation this year on August 29th.

• Husker Harvest Days Sept 1113th exhibit will be full, with six or seven breeders bringing a variety of cattle of all ages for display in our tent on Lot 162. We’re in the same location, Northwest corner of the exhibit grounds but have a new Lot number, 162 with all the grounds improvements made in the show site this year. Stop by and see us and breed leading genetics from several operations.

• Our Annual Angus Tour will be Sept 24-25th in the Central Nebraska area. It will be a fun and exciting tour in our scenic Loup River Valley. Allflex and Multimin USA will host a social on the evening of Sept 23rd to kick off this year’s event. New this year is online registration, where we’re able to take credit and debit card payments through our website www.nebraskaangus.org. We’ll be able to also take credit card payments on site that night.

• Also on the evening of the Sept 23rd will be a special Association meeting concerning a request by the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic to open up the Angus show to out of state entries. Any member who’d like to have a part in this decision should be there by 7:30 p.m. (CT). The meeting will be held in Ord, NE at the Cobblestone Inn, at the Trotter Convention Center.

• The National Angus Convention in Columbus, OH Nov 3-5 shows a great program and the trade show will be a who’s who in the Livestock Industry, with many great products that you should check out for your operation.

• Our Annual Meeting/Banquet will be December 1st in Kearney, we’ve already begun to work on the speakers for our afternoon educational sessions.

I look forward to seeing many of you at upcoming events. Don’t forget to check out the many fall female sales of our membership. The sale calendar is on page 24. There are ample opportunities to add some tremendous females to your herd if you’re in need of adding great maternal lines.

I must mention that on pages 2022, are the obituaries of four of our members, Nancy Graff and three of our past presidents; Chuck Pohlman, Ken Parcel and Fred Kraye. Their loss is felt deeply by their families and also our Angus family as they filled vital roles in their families, communities and our Association. Our deepest sympathy to their families.

his summer seems to be picking up speed and moving along faster each week. I can’t believe August is here already. With August comes our county fair. I always look forward to the county fair. Then, once it gets started, I look forward to the fair being over. I think that’s because once the fair is over, the possibility of me getting into trouble with my wife and daughter is greatly reduced. Take for instance the time I was supposed to hold the halter of a freshly groomed breeding heifer while waiting for her class in the show ring. For some reason it was my fault when the neighbor boys market steer decided he didn’t want his picture taken and pushed his way past the county extension agent, stepped on the photographer’s foot and brushed against the very heifer I had been charged to guard, leaving a streak of his previous day’s ration the entire length of her body. Then there was the time after measuring out the ingredients and mixing the dough, over 3 dozen cookies had been baked.

They were carefully placed on wire racks to cool. Some had chocolate in them, some had peanut butter, some had butterscotch. They all had been baked with one eye on the timer and the other eye peering through the glass of the oven door. They had been plucked from their fiery dungeon at the absolute opportune time. Each cookie then was painstakingly scrutinized for its shape and color. I learned a couple things that day.

One… just because there are cookies on the kitchen counter doesn’t mean I can have one. Two… perfectly shaped cookies do taste better than the ones with irregular shapes.

All joking about the county fair aside, we offer what help we can and encourage local youth to bring cattle projects to our fair. Countless times we have heard that as cattle producers 6 • Nebraska Angus Association News • August/September 2018

we have to stand up and tell our side of the story. I completely agree with that statement and we need to be telling it to our young people. That is where many of our battles will be won or lost. With all of the issues we face in the cattle business, from animal rights to the misinformation about the health benefits of eating beef, our youth can be our best advocates.

While watching the cookoff competition during the recent Junior Nationals in Wisconsin, it became obvious what a great job our Junior association is doing in building spokesmen for the future.

This issue of the Nebraska Angus news spotlights our members on the upcoming tour Sept.24-25. I know the tour committee has been tirelessly working to get everything lined up. I encourage you to make plans to attend. It promises to be an entertaining and educational tour.

he big news at the Angus Association this summer was the launch of the Feeder Calf Program, which has been named Angus Link. After a year and half of earnest and driven planning, the first lots enrolled in the Angus Link program sold in Billings, MT at the Northern Livestock Video Auction Summertime Classic Sale in late July.

The 14 debut consignors were exclusively Nebraska commercial cattle producers. They represented 16 lots and over 4000 head of feeder calves and yearlings. All told, the average premium paid for the Angus Link cattle was $4-$10/cwt compared with the other calves in the sale that day. The night of the sale, there were a number of folks who contacted the new Angus Link director, Chris Engel, inquiring about enrollment for their feeder calves.

In my opinion, Angus Link is a critical development in differentiating black hided cattle. We all know that Certified Angus Beef has been a driver of the popularity of all black cattle.

However, until now, the feeders were left guessing about how any given set of black calves would perform, and our commercial customers were not necessarily being rewarded for their investment in good genetics. This program strives to change that paradigm for everyone.

An overview: For years, seedstock producers have relied on the Angus Association’s data base (by far, the largest in the beef industry) to help them with their cattle selections. Commercial bull buyers have pored over the data provided by these producers in their sale catalogs.

However, that was where the information flow stopped. With Angus Link, this important data can now be delivered to feeders so that they can also use the Angus Association’s science to make better decisions for the cattle they purchase – whether they are sell-

ing strictly by performance, on the grid, or a combination of the two.

The graphic below gives a general overview of the scoring of the Angus Link enrolled cattle.

The numbers on this Angus Link Scorecard are derived from the $ Values and EPDs of the commercial cattleman’s registered Angus bull battery, as well as an evaluation of their cowherd.

The geneticists at the Angus Association have derived the algorithm that produces these scores that describe the genetic potential of these feeder cattle.

As this program is in its infancy, there are probably going to be many questions that arise, and those interested can be assisted in enrollment.

he Nebraska Junior Angus Association had another exciting and eventful summer this year.

The state show was full of high quality cattle, the National Junior Angus Show celebrated its 50th anniversary, and juniors continued to prepare for state fair.

This year’s state how took place in York, Nebraska from June 1-3 where juniors competed in the show ring, for places on national teams, and got to come back together with the Angus family. The junior meeting took place Saturday and the new 2018-2019 Nebraska junior board members were elected. The new board is as follows: President- Reagan Skow, 1st Vice President- Kyra Meyer, 2nd Vice PresidentJace Stagemeyer, Secretary/TreasurerCaitlin Nelson, Historian- Rachel Smith, Directors- Miles Stagemeyer, Miranda Raithel and Chase Cotton.

Kent and Michelle Nelson were reelected to the advisor position as well.The association also hosted National Junior Angus Association Board Member, Jera Pipkin of Missouri, through the Green Coats Coast to Coast program. Following the junior meeting, juniors were able to participate in ice breakers with Jera and had the opportunity to get to know. Additionally, the juniors instilled a Mentoring program within the state association. If anyone would like to take part in the program please do not hesitate to contact me.

The National Junior Angus Show made history as it celebrated its 50th anniversary! There were numerous different ways to celebrate between the birthday party, tailgate, and catching up with loved ones. The Nebraska juniors had the opportunity to participate in different educational clinics, contests, and competed very well in the show ring. Some highlights include Weston Svoboda taking first in the very first auctioneering contest,

TaraLee Hudson took second in Skilla-thon, the junior CAB Cook-off team won their division, the junior Quiz Bowl team placed third, Miranda Raidel had a Reserve Division Champion in the Owned Heifer Show, I had the Reserve Grand Champion Bred and Owned Steer, and Grand Champion Bred and Owned Carcass Steer. It was an extremely successful week for all kids across Nebraska as they got to partake in a historical event.

Next on juniors’ calendars is the 2018 Nebraska State Fair. The junior meeting will take place on the fairgrounds with more information to be sent out regarding date, time, and place at a later time as it has not yet been set. Please don’t hesitate to contact an advisor, junior board member, or myself regarding any items for the agenda for the meeting. Our junior association will host its semen auction during the Nebraska Angus Association’s annual banquet on December 1st in Kearney. On December 2nd the NJAA will have its annual Winter Show in Kearney. This is the perfect event to bring new calves to to get used to the show ring and to connect with other juniors from across the state. I hope to see everyone in September and December!

ing many Angus sales when he was younger may have rubbed off. Weston also exhibited his forensic skill with a first place win the Intermediate B Extemporaneous Speech Contest.

In the Culinary contests Dakota and Montana Lovett of Bladen, won first place in Chef’s Challenge at the CAB Cookoff. They were able to wow the judges with their recipe of the Cheeseburger Meatball Sub in the Other Beef Competition, Sr Division. This recipe uses precooked meatballs to create an easy-to-eat meal that will remind everyone of cheeseburger grill out,

without the mess.

Of course along with all the contests, there’s the actual cattle show.

Miranda Raithel of Falls City exhibited a reserve division heifer and Reagan Skow showed her bred and owned steer to the reserve champion backdrop. Reagan’s steer was the Grand Champion Bred and Owned Carcass steer. The steer graded low Prime with a yield grad of 2.7, a ribeye area of 12.2 sq. in. and hot carcass weight of 799.0 lb. Her steer qualified for CAB, and Reagan received a $28.00 cwt grid premium.

The Nebraska Jr Angus members had a long week the past July in Madison, WI. These young members participated in many contests and activities. Many friendships were made or were renewed along the way as they were “Living The Dream”.

A significant scholarship was awarded to one Nebraska Jr, Reagan Skow of Palisade. She was announced as one of the American Angus Auxiliary female scholarship winners and will contend for the title of Miss American Angus this fall, in Columbus, OH. Congratulations to Reagan as she has met one of the many goals she has set for herself. Additional scholarship winners for Nebraska are Dakota Lovett of Bladen and Miranda Raithel of Falls City. They each received a $1,000 scholarship from the Angus Foundation.

A new contest this year was the Auctioneer contest. Weston Svoboda, son of former Nebraska Sec/Mgr Jennifer Svoboda, placed first in the intermediate division. It appears that tagging along with his Mom, attend-

2018 Nebraska Angus Tour

strAnd Angus WELCOMEs tOur Ostrand Angus, operated by Kory and Danielle Ostrand, is proud to be part of the 2018 Nebraska Angus tour. Ostrand Angus Ranch is located south of Ansley in the rolling hills of Custer County. The ranch has been in the Ostrand family since 1884, when Kory’s Great-Great-Grandparents, August and Caroline Ostrand, came from Sweden and registered their homestead near Mason City.

Kory is the 5th generation raising cattle and farming on the Ostrand Ranch. Kory purchased his first registered Angus heifer from Boyles Angus when he was 9 years old. He grew his herd by purchasing additional females from the money he received from his 4-H projects. In 2001, Kory held his first bull sale at Huss Livestock Market in Kearney, while still in high school.

He continued to manage and grow his cow herd while attending college.

Kory graduated from Southeast Community College in Beatrice in 2005.

Following graduation, he moved back to the ranch to continue farming and ranching as the 5th generation. Kory’s registered purebred herd grew in 2012 when Ostrand Angus had the opportunity to purchase the mature cow herd from Slagle Angus.

Twin girls, Avery & Olivia, are 4 years old. The newest ranch hand, Merrik, was born the beginning of April 2018.

The children all have a beginning to their own registered Angus herd as each one was given a heifer when they were born. Ostrand Angus believes that ranching and farming is a family heritage. Not only does Kory work on the ranch, but Danielle and the chil-

dren actively help where they can.

Kory is a partner on the ranch with his father, Neil Ostrand, who runs a commercial Angus herd. Kory’s Aunt Kathy Ostrand, Cousin Chris Hogg, brother-in-law Seth Behrens, and Grandfather Keith Hogg also play important roles on the ranch and Ostrand Angus.

Presently, the breeding program includes Kory’s 360 registered Angus cows and 75 registered Angus bred heifers. The cattle graze on 2,350 acres of owned and leased native grass.

Other crops that are included in the operation are 450 acres of alfalfa, corn, and soybeans. In addition, they have seeded 70 acres of pivot irrigated land to a grass mix that is used for both haying and grazing.

Ostrand Angus uses an extensive AI breeding program with some embryo transfer (ET) work. Predominant bloodlines in the cowherd are Sitz Upward, SA Upward 1061, Connealy Impession, PA Power Tool, Connealy Counselor, and Payweight 107S. Herd sires currently used in the program are K C F Bennett the Rock, Bush’s Easy Decision, EXAR Resistol, EXAR Stetson, ICC Pay Raise, PA Fortified, OA Cornerstone, Connealy Consensus 0728, 4M Element 607, and SA Arsenal 327. The top cow families active in the herd are Queen Idelette, Queen Jessica, and Miss Blackbird. Ostrand Angus holds their annual production sale in partner with Slagle Angus at the Slagle’s ranch north of Sargent on the third Wednesday in February. Ostrand Angus markets 120-125 yearling Angus bulls and 50 registered open yearling replacement heifers per year through the sale. They also offer private treaty bulls in late spring. The steers mates to the bulls are finished at the Ostrand ranch where they receive individual carcass data to reassure their cattle have excellent carcass merit.

Kory and Danielle have set several goals for the operation, including continuing to raise their family and cattle on the family history of land/agriculture on the ranch, with their children continuing the legacy as the 6th generation of the Ostrand family. They plan to continue to breed and market top

cattle in the Angus industry, as well as increase the ET work done in the cattle herd. They also look forward to beginning 4-H with their children, where it all began for Kory.

Dethlefs Angus Ranch was the registered name used by the Dutch Dethlefs family. This began in 1965 when they moved to the Henry Ranch south of Poole, NE. They now live across the South Loup River from that first ranch, after acquiring the Tillson Ranch, which is located one mile west of Poole or 6 miles SW of Ravenna.

The Tillson’s had homesteaded and built a sizeable ranch in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. They raised Angus cattle in the early years and were the first operation to irrigate out of the South Loup River. Water rights were filed on July 20, 1895. The Dethlefs family still uses surface water from the South Loup under that permit.

The family of Dutch and Marian consists of six children, sixteen grand children and twelve great grand children. All of these family members play a major role in making Dethlefs Angus Ranch what it is today. Branding time is the big family gathering along with even the little ones are throwing ropes to drag calves to the

fire. The family also enjoys getting together for hunting and fishing when they are not working with the cattle.

They have harvested many fish, deer, turkey and raccoons (with dogs) on their ranch.

In 2016, Craig and his family moved back to Ravenna after retiring from being a veterinarian due to health reasons. They are currently helping at the ranch full time. Dethlefs Angus Ranch is the only Angus operation in Nebraska to have been honored with two producers of the year. Dutch and Marian in 2007 and Craig and Laurie in 2014.

Presently, the operation runs approximately 150 cows on their 1,200 + acres. They have been using A.I. and embryo technology in their herd for over 45 years. Over 80% of the females in their herd are A.I. sired.

According to Dutch, the 2018 calf crop is looking very good and seems to be doing well on all the green grass the bountiful rains the 2018 spring and summer has provided. The calves are sired by Renown, Rampage, PayRaise, Tour of Duty and Sensation.

Their herd bulls include SAV Angus Industry, Woodhill Granite and Connealy General to finish up the sire groups.

The majority of the bulls raised in their program are marketed through their annual production sale that is cohosted with Treffer Angus. They will be holding their 51st annual sale this coming April 5th, 2019. They also sell cattle through the Cattlemen’s Classic show and sale held annually in February. They have been a part of the ‘Classic’ since its inception in 1991.

‘Dutch’ and Marian are looking forward to hosting a stop on the Tillson Homestead and hope tour goers enjoy the beauty of the South Loup River valley as much as they do. God willing, their family will be able to carry on this tradition for generations to come.

Originally opened in 1877, Ed Wright an area businessman constructed buildings with the chalk.

The ranch lies along the Middle Loup River near Rockville. The Dethlefs’ run approximately 475 registered Angus cows and 100 replacement heifers. Their operation also consists of 250 acres of row crops and another 400 acres of alfalfa and grass hay. The Dethlefs’ hold their annual production sale the first Friday of March, offering 100 2-year-old bulls, 25 yearling bulls, and 20 replacement heifers. They also offer bulls, replacement heifers, bred heifers, and mature cows for sale via private treaty.

The Dethlefs’ have used artificial insemination extensively since the late 1970’s. Today, they AI approximately 250 cows and 70 replacement heifers annually. By doing this, they create the best genetics possible. All cattle must pass the visual inspection, and must be sound and functional. The cows and heifers are expected to have good disposition, calve unassisted, raise a heavy calf, and rebreed in a timely manner year after year. They value growth, carcass, and maternal traits in their cattle.

The Dethlefs’ do not “push” their cattle. Bulls provided for the annual production sale are ran on pasture up until the time of the sale. The bulls get

Chalk Mines

The mine stood idle for a number of years and was reopened in the 1930’s by a paint company in Omaha.

Miners used simple tools and also dynamite to mine the chalk. The product was shipped to Omaha via train for processing. The chalk was used in a number of ways not only for paint and whitewash but also in cement, polishes and chicken feed.

The mine sat empty for years. The area was closed in 1983. The area was reopened in 1997 for public tours.

Poss Angus has raised multiple leading sires including: Total Impact and Bodyguard at Accelerated Genetics, Easy Impact, Maverick at Semex, Marvel at Alta, Achievement at ABS, and Sudden Impact. They have also purchased a few bulls used heavily in the AI industry such as: Baldridge Willie, Baldridge Compass, Jindra Blackout, Connealy Long Range, and EB Teddy. Embryo transfer has been used heavily for 15 years on the top producing females, as well as utilizing cooperator herds. The cows are ran in a commercial environment, which allows the Posses to produce bulls that will work in similar environment for their customers, the commercial cattlemen.

Kurt began raising angus cattle in the 1980’s and selling bulls by private treaty. Travis graduated from Fort Hays State University in 2011 with a degree in animal science. He went to work for Schaff Angus Valley and Poss Angus. He moved back home to run the cow herd and farm with his father, Kurt. Travis and Emilee began operating as T & E Angus at that time.

6 Angus 36 Angus has Longevity 36 Angus Ranch and Angus cattle trace back nearly 100 years. It’s beginning came in 1923 when Will and Frieda Sitz purchased Angus heifers from William Williams at Clarks, NE. In March of 1937, Will and Frieda began a new life in Holt County Nebraska in a neighborhood called The Green Valley south of Atkinson. 36 Angus got its name from the number 36 on the Holt county license plates.

During this time Bill became a lifetime member of the American Angus Association in 1945. In 1947, Bill and Dee Stout were united in marriage and moved to the ranch in southeastern Rock County where they raised their children, Bill Jr., Judy, Sheryl and Mike. In the 1960’s the family started A.I.ing and utilizing AHIR. Bill Jr. purchased a ranch in Loup County and the herd moved there. At its largest, Bill Jr’s herd was 250 registered cows strong and he sold 75 bulls annually. Today Bill Jr’s. son, Cody and his wife Melissa along with their daughters Macy and Mya, operate 36 Angus. They began buying commer-

cial Angus in 2010 and added registered Angus stock in 2015. Cody and Melissa’s herd numbers 80 females total, evenly divided between commercial and registered stock. They operate 1,000 acres and also offer alfalfa hay sales and also do custom haying for other producers. Bill Jr. still assists in the operation.

Current bloodlines used include Sitz Investment and Sitz Logo, Schiefelbein Effective, Basin Payweight 107S and LT Enterprise. 36 Angus offers their bulls for sale by Private Treaty beginning March 1st. The bulls are weaned in Loup County and returned to Ord where they are fed and grown to be ready for the spring sale season as yearlings.

Cody and Melissa plan to expand their registered herd by retaining top performing heifers from their best cows. Long term plan is to continue to build their customer base by offering bulls that provide growth and performance without sacrificing maternal traits. The Sitz family is eager to be a stop on this year’s Nebraska Angus tour.

ILL IrOn hAngIng O CAttLE E x p a n d s f o r the future Ben and Pamila Quandt and sons Shawn and C J are proprietors of Mill Iron Hanging O Cattle. They are eager to have their cattle on display at the September 25th breakfast stop at 36 Angus near Ord. Their operation is located Southeast of Sargent, NE, on approximately 640 acres.

While their herd is a relatively young operation, they actually got their start when Ben became employed as herdsman with Sand Dune Cattle Co. in 2002. Dennis Echktenkamp approached Ben and Pam in 2008, looking for someone to lease his registered Angus cows.

Their goal is to produce moderate framed, easy fleshing females with desirable carcass qualities. Evidence that they are reaching that goal are the 2016 and 2017 high selling bulls at the Nebraska Bull Test sale. The 2017 bull was high gaining bull in the Bull Test’s calving ease division and also a member of the high ADG sire group. 2018 saw the Quandt’s begin marketing

bulls with Kent & Michelle Nelson operating as N Backward 7 Cattle, in the Rancher’s Choice sale which is held the second Saturday of March.

The cowherd has a large influence of Summitcrest Complete 1P55 and they have also retained a majority of the daughters from their herd sire Summitcrest Aberdeen 4Y26. This bull is now in use at Quaker Hill Farms.

A.I. sires that were used this year were Sydgen Fate, Connealy Front & Center and Vin Mar Johnny Cash.

Future goals include expanding the bull sale to include offering heifers and to start exhibiting cattle at various shows to increase their operation exposure. They also would like to add some land holdings of their own and increase their cow numbers. They are looking forward to meeting Angus breed enthusiasts on this year’s Nebraska Angus tour.

ErB MIgnErY COuntrY Bronzes Celebrate r a n c h a n d We s t e r n L i f e Nestled in the Northeast Nebraska Sandhills, on the front lawn of the Wheeler County Courthouse in the small town of Barlett, stands a remarkable assortment of bronze sculptures by renowned western artist, Herb Mignery. Visitors passing through the unassuming village suddenly see an array of artistic gems standing guard on the courthouse grounds.

The art pieces range in size from life-size to small bronzes mounted on pedestals. The sculpture display, called “The Bronze Garden”, is the home of what many say is the largest permanent outdoor bronze display in the state of Nebraska, outside of Omaha and Lincoln. The grounds are enhanced by lush landscaping, featuring shrubs and masonry work. Lights have been installed to illuminate the grounds at night.

The award-winning artist responsible for the garden, Herb Mignery (pronounced Min –er-ree) was raised on a working cattle ranch near Bartlett.

Rather than follow his family’s 110 year tradition of ranching, Herb turned his childhood interest in drawing into a successful career in the commercial art world before devoting himself full time to fine art. A member of the Cowboy Artists of America, his elegant and classically rendered sculptures chronicle the lives of men and women as they wrestled the land and elements of the early American West.

Each of Herb’s sculptures completes a piece of the story of life in the West. His small scale and monumental bronze sculptures are in private and corporate collections across the country. Herb has also completed several life-size sculptures for permanent public installations.

In 2002, Herb and his wife Sherry donated a life-size bronze statue named “Silent Leather”, to his hometown of Bartlett. The majestic bronze was put on prominent display in the front lawn of the Wheeler County courthouse. Ten years later twelve additional smaller bronzes to accompany the life size bronze, arrived in Bartlett from the Mingery’s. Each bronze is securely mounted on a sturdy pedestal, crafted from high-grade materials and arranged in a carefully planned layout, transforming the courthouse lawn into a dazzling sculpture display, The Bronze Garden. Since then additional bronzes have arrived, and the garden continues to grow. The additional bronzes are titled: Beach Boys, Box Social, The Guardian, The Water Boy, Prairie Vigil, The Ultimate Disgrace, White Man’s Promise, Country Doctors, The Last Gate, The Dowser, The

Homestead, Trails West, and the Immigrant.

In his words…”One of my goals in life as a chronicler is to tell the story of people like those I grew up with. I see myself as vehicle to let their stories be known. I feel that our attitude and view of the future can only be determined by an examination of our forefathers and the society they created”.

They came over from Germany as boys and settled in Albion where they began as horse traders. They purchased most of the Wagonhammer Ranches in the 30’s when sodbusters gave up trying to farm the eastern sandhills, considering the land to be a worthless desert. Max and Julius saw the value of the sandhills for grazing and were determined to make it through the hard times.

Julius’s son, Jim, joined the operation after WWII. Jim started the registered Angus herd in 1960. He was an early believer in performance testing, AI, crossbreeding, and many other innovations. Jim was recognized as the Seedstock Producer of the Year by the Beef Improvement Federation in 1979.

Wagonhammer is currently owned and managed by Jim’s son, Jay and his family including his wife Susie, sons Mitch and Alex, daughter Hilary and her husband Ryan Opdahl. Jay serves in numerous leadership positions in the community and is a past president of the Nebraska Cattlemen.

Joe Epperly oversees genetics and sales for the registered and commercial herds. Steve Shermer serves as the Ranch Manager overseeing all ranch operations and day-to-day operations at the South Ranch. Justin Blackburn manages the registered cows at the East Ranch location. Don Kahl, Tom Shaw, Al Snider, Aaron Rees, and Steve Growcock are the team that makes up the backbone of the three ranches. Ar LAzY d CAttLE L o n g ti m e A n g u s Breeders The Beck family of Bar Lazy D Cattle are relative newcomers to registered Angus business, but their use of Angus genetics isn’t new. They have raised cattle, specifically Angus cattle for 54 years near Genoa, NE. Proprietors of Bar Lazy D Cattle are Scott and Joe Beck. Scott’s wife Mallory and their children Maci, Josie and Price and Joe’s wife Rosie are also part of the business. Others who play an important role in the business are Ethan Kershaw and Tod Erskine.

Scott has always had a passion for breeding and growing cattle. He built their 2,000 head growing yard when he returned to their venture in 2003.

Their operation also includes the growing of corn and soybeans and the growing yard on 4,500 acres.

The passion for breeding cattle prompted the beginning of the registered Angus herd. This has been accomplished through the utilization of embryo transfer, because they’re embryos are from proven cows which provides stability for the herd. They are using mainly Schaff Angus Valley genetics.

The Beck family markets their registered cattle through an annual spring Bull and Female sale in Ericson, NE. Operational goals include continuing

Bar Lazy D is eagerly awaiting the Angus tour and the display of their cattle at the Wagonhammer stop on September 25th. rEOuf Angus Building for the future Freouf Angus, which is located ten miles South of Bartlett, and owned

by Adam and Christy Freouf, have their sights set firmly in the future.

They will be on display on Tuesday, Sept 25th at the Wagonhammer Angus stop on this year’s tour. Their operation began in 2004 when Adam purchased six registered Angus cows.

Other important members of the operation include their three sons Parker, Casey and Cort. Jean and Steve Niemeyer, Adam’s Mother and Step father also play significant roles in the operation.

The Freouf’s have been able to expand their cow numbers to 150 head of registered females. The expansion

The ET program has been extremely important as it has allowed to quickly multiply the influence of their top females.

AnCY JO grAff Nancy Jo Graff of Ogallala, Nebraska, entered into heaven on January 5, 2018, after a fierce battle with cancer.

Nancy was born February 4, 1950 in Lincoln Nebraska to Deane and Beth (Uehling) Pettett.

She graduated from Lincoln Southeast High School in 1968. She attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where she obtained her Bachelors degree and Masters in Speech Language Pathology. She was also a member of Chi Omega Sorority.

She married Chuck Graff on May 26, 1973. Together they moved from coast to coast pursuing their joint-partnership in cattle and raising their three daughters. During this time, they lived in Nebraska, Colorado, California, and Florida before moving to Ogallala, Nebraska in 1984.

Nancy was a Speech Therapist for 44 years. She served the communities of Ogallala, Grant, and Julesburg over the years. She loved helping others find a way to return to the normalcy of life. Nancy was also a key partner with her husband in Graff Cattle raising Registered Angus, Gelbvieh, and composite cattle, selling bulls, and showing seedstock cattle across the country.

Her family was the joy and pride of her life. She was a dedicated member of the United Methodist Church serving on multiple committees, Sunday School, Bible School, and ushering. She was instrumental in the Ogallala Outdoor Pool Project. She was a past Honored Queen of Job’s Daughters Bethel #45 and served on the Ogallala Job’s Daughters Council for many years. hArLEs M. “ChuCk” POhLMAn Funeral service for Charles M. “Chuck” Pohlman, 72, of Hadar were held Friday, May 18, 2018 at Christ Lutheran Church in Norfolk with Rev. Chip Winter officiating. Burial was in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Norfolk.

Chuck died Monday, May 14, 2018 at the Heritage of Bel Air Nursing Home in Norfolk.

The son of Arthur and Bernice Pohlman, Chuck was born March 30, 1946 in Norfolk, Nebraska. He attended grade school in Hadar and graduated from Pierce High School.

Chuck then received a Bachelors Degree in Agriculture Education from the University of Nebraska - Lincoln in 1968 and a Masters of Science from Iowa State University in 1970.

He married Linda Wrenn on March 14, 1970 at First Presbyterian Church in Grand Island, NE. He started his education career in Iowa teaching high school in both Oakland and Elk Horn for 2 years at each location. They moved back to the Norfolk area where they raised their children, Scott, Bryan, Garrett, and Emily on their family farm. With Linda’s partnership, he built a premier purebred Angus cattle operation. Additionally, he started teaching agriculture at Northeast Community College in Norfolk in 1972. With his leadership NECC became the state’s first community college to add an Ag program, building it from 3 to 200 students over 40 years. The program’s Agriculture Complex, a $2.4M 40,000 sq.ft. complex now bears his name. His teaching career culminated as the Dean of the Agriculture, Health, and Science Division.

Chuck was also an active member of the community. He was both an usher and Sunday school teacher at Christ Lutheran Church, and served as President of the school board. He served as President of the Nebraska Angus Association for two terms. He was also a long-time volunteer fireman with the Hadar Fire Department,

and was a member of the Pierce County zoning board.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years Linda Pohlman of Hadar, children Scott (Moriah) Pohlman of Hereford, Texas, Bryan (Nydia) Pohlman of Philadelphia, Garrett (Monique) Pohlman of Kearney, Emily (Mike) Ehle of Blair, 7 grandchildren; Cutter, Colter, Natalia, Elizabeth, Dean, Mason, Calum, siblings Marilyn and Jerry Glaser of Norfolk, Richard and Betty Pohlman of Hadar, Margaret and Donis Petersan of Lincoln, Dale and Susan Pohlman of Norfolk, inlaws Kathy (Gene) Gosch of Kearney, Jane (Rod) Gangwish of Shelton, Van (Cindy) Wrenn of Omaha, Sara (Rob) Mitchell of Omaha, numerous nieces and nephews. They will forever appreciate the positive example he set, his selfless work ethic, and his commitment to family and his Christian faith.

EndALL E. PArCEL Kendall E. Parcel was born to Alfred and Harriet (Fogleman) Parcel on March 5, 1941 in Cushing, Iowa. He passed away Wednesday, July 11, 2018 at Nebraska Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska.

Kendall graduated from Quimby High School in Iowa in 1958. He met Sandra Mills at a dance in Washta, Iowa, by the fall they were “going steady” and were married March 1st, 1960 in Sandra’s parents living room. The Air Force took the couple to France for a couple years and when returning to the United States, eventually end up in rural Lyons, Nebraska where he worked for AT&T for 36 years.

Kendall took great pride in raising his Angus cattle, spending time in his garden and watching many different types of birds. He LOVED to be outside. He also enjoyed sports, especially Iowa and Nebraska (since he grew up in Iowa he always rooted for them when they played each

other). All these interests were shared with his loving wife. His latest joy was welcoming his 2 great grandchildren into the world with lots of love and happiness.

Kendall was the President of the Nebraska Angus Association, served on the Extension Board and belonged to the Lyons VFW. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra; two sons: Tim (Heidi) Parcel of Norwalk, IA, Jeff (Lisa) Parcel of Oakland, NE; 2 grandchildren: Jason (Ashley) Parcel, Austin (Nicole) Parcel all of Oakland; and 2 great-grandchildren: Kendrick Parcel and Adley Parcel; brothers: Gary (Dolly) Parcel of Buffalo, MN, Lynn (JoAnn) Parcel of Newark, OH, and Kevin (Susan) Parcel of Washta, IA.

rEd L. krAYE Fred L. Kraye passed away at Pioneer Memorial Rest Home in Mullen, NE, on July 16, 2018. Fred was born on August 6, 1934, to Ernst and Lydia (Helen) Jordan Kraye, at the ranch southwest of Mullen, NE. He graduated from Mullen High School in 1951 and was a past president of the Mullen Alumni Association. Fred attended every one of his 67 Alumni Banquets.

Fred married Theresa Sullivan on April 14, 1956, and to this union, four children were born; Carol, Fredrick, John, and Michael.

During his lifetime, Fred was a rancher, a businessman, a truck driver, a farmer and a cattle order buyer. He was a long-time sports fan and an active community member. Fred was a lifetime member of the American Angus Association and a past president of the Nebraska Angus Association. From 1968 thru 2003, Fred and Theresa Kraye owned and operated Kraye Feed & Supply and K+T Trucking. They resided at the ranch, southwest of Mullen, until August of 1974 when they moved to town.

Nearly 25 American Angus Association® members traveled from multiple states for an in-depth cattle industry tour through the Beef Leaders Institute (BLI).

Hosted by the American Angus Association and sponsored by Certified Angus Beef® (CAB) and the Angus Foundation, BLI is a complete pasture-to-plate experience for young leaders in the Angus industry. The tour takes participants on a five-day expedition to study quality genetics, genomic technology, feed yard management, packing plants, foodservice and retail distribution of CAB and much more.

The yearly event was hosted June 18-23 and began at the Angus Association headquarters in Saint Joseph, Missouri. Participants were given a look at the interworkings of the Association by staff members and representatives.

“BLI is an educational partnership between the Angus Foundation and the Certified Angus Beef brand,” said Kara Lee, production brand manager for CAB. “Ultimately, its targeted toward young Angus breeders who are interested in expanding their knowledge base, building their leadership skills and just getting a better appreciation for the entire production system. We cover everything from the tools the American Angus Association offers all the way to how consumers utilize the Certified Angus Beefbrand.”

The goal is to provide young producers between the ages of 25 and 45 the opportunity to network with their peers in the Angus breed, and they learn about Association programs, sectors of the beef business after cattle leave the ranch and how cattle qualify for CAB. Participants were selected through an application process and are exceptional leaders who represent the Angus breed and cattle industry.

“While visiting the CAB headquarters, we gave participants the opportunity to look at a carcass and explore the 10 carcass specifications that make up the Certified Angus Beef brand quality standards,” said Diana Clark, meat scientist for CAB. “We wanted to show the producer group the added value they can receive when their cattle meet the CAB specifications. We were also able to break down a side of beef to look at where the specific value comes from in each primal, which I think was really eye-opening for them.”

This year marked the 11th annual BLI. Throughout the week, participants visited GeneSeek Neogen Operations in Lincoln, Nebraska; Weborg Feeding Co., in Pender, Nebraska; Trans Ova in Sioux City, Iowa; the Tyson Fresh Meats processing facility in Dakota City, Iowa.; Sysco in Cleveland, Ohio; and a retail store at Giant Eagle’s Market District Supermarket in Cleveland, Ohio, concluding at the CAB headquarters in Wooster, Ohio.

Participants experienced all sectors of the beef business, from start to finish.

Through interaction with industry experts, they cultivated a vision to improve their own operations as well as the entire industry.

“I wanted to attend the Beef Leaders Institute because we talk to so many people at the Association every day,” said Kathleen Evans, producer from Hope Hull, Alabama. “I wanted to meet the people I talk to and see how things work at the Association on a day-to-day basis. Having the opportunity to travel to the different stops and experience all facets of the industry while networking with fellow participants was really exciting.”

While it may not always be easy to leave the farm for five days, the opportunity to learn about what goes on off the ranch builds a new mindset and reinstates a passion for the Angus breed in those who attend.

“Through this experience, I’ve learned

there is a lot out there I still need to learn,” said Zane Troxtel, producer from Geraldine, Alabama. “I’ve really liked hearing from everyone and how they do things in other parts of the country. One of the reasons I wanted to come to this event was to see not only what the Association is doing, but what other cattlemen in other operations are doing as well. The people have really made this trip memorable for me.”
