Welcome to the 20th Annual Sunflower Genetics Production Sale Everyone at Sunflower Genetics would like to extend an invitation to be our guest March 18th. We spend all year working for and looking forward to this day. We are always excited to show off the cattle we have spent most of our lives building. In reality we are equally excited to see everyone at the sale.

As I sit here writing this letter the unbelievable February weather is drawing me back outside. Can’t believe how nice it’s been calving, but we’ll take these nice days. With about 200 calves born in recent weeks, I don’t think we’ll have a frozen ear on any of them. While the cattle market is no longer something out of story book, everyone will still sell probably the 2nd most valuable calf crop in their life. However, no need to dwell on the weather or market, both things we have very little control over. Focusing on things we can control such as genetics is where our energy needs spent. High quality, proven genetics are one of the most efficient, best investments that can be made in your cow herd. When you consider how much feed, equipment, and labor costs; a few dollars on a per cow basis, goes a long way in adding more profit to your pocket. $2000 extra on the cost of a good bull over an average bull costs only about $20/calf. Doesn’t take long to make a return on that investment. Everyone used to talk about getting an extra $25/calf, but with today’s prices, hundreds of dollars are possible with improved genetics. A few pounds extra, a live calf because of easy calving genetics, an extra calf or two because of longevity bred into the cow herd or simply more dollars at the sale barn because your calves look the part.

Suddenly a well-bred bull becomes the most efficient investment you can make toward your cowherd. All of that is before you even take the calves to the feedlot and reap a premium because they grew well on less feed. Icing on the cake, they hung up carcasses that bring a premium. Improvement in all areas can net each of us a worthwhile payoff. Mary and I have been blessed with an incredible family. Our parents have put up with our dream for years and now our kids have been drawn into the dream. Jake, Ben and even Joe are all working with us, Becky works in Topeka and spends lots of hours trying to keep us going and Sam, a junior in High School helps when he can. Needless to say the future is here at Sunflower Genetics. We look forward to the years to come. Fresh ideas and drive will help push Sunflower Genetics to the next level.

Explanation of Performance Data, EPDs and $Indexes Definition of Terms

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels.

Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on 1st calf heifers.

Carcass Weight (CW): Estimates average differences in carcass weight. Expressed in pounds at a given age endpoint.

Birth Weight (BW): Expressed in pounds and predicts the average difference that can be expected in an animal’s offspring compared to the average.

Yield Grade (YG): Predicts differences in progeny carcass YG scores at 475 days of age.

Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight.

Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight.

Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters.

Milk (MM): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk.

Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth.

Marbling (Marb): Predicts the average difference in USDA Quality Grade in an animal’s progeny, when compared to the progeny of another animal at a given age endpoint.

Back Fat (BF): Expressed in inches of back fat, a predictor in difference in inches of carcass back fat at 475 days of age.

Ribeye Area (REA): Predicts the average difference in REA in an animal’s progeny, when compared to the progeny of another sire.

Color and Polled Status: Homozygous: Sire all black or polled calves.

Heterozygous: Red calves may be sired by bulls, depending on the genetic color status of the cows.

Actual Birth Weight (Act. BW): Body weight measurement taken at birth.

Adjusted Weaning Weight (Adj. WW): Weaning weight calculated by adjusting actual weaning weight to 205 days of age, accounting for age of dam.

Adjusted Yearling Weight (Adj.YW): Yearling weight calculated by adjusting actual yearling weight to 365 days of age.

Scrotal Circumference (SC): Scrotal measurements will be made available on sale day.

New This Year: Genomic-Enhanced EPDs The world around us is constantly changing, technology continues to improve and evolve. The beef cattle industry is no exception. Genomics are among the latest advancements and have been a hot topic for a few years now. For us, one of the questions has been: Where do I utilize genomics and how we should apply the results? Another question we have had is: How do genomics impact our customers? The answer to all of these questions revolves around our goal to provide you with the most predictable genetics with no surprises.

We have always stressed the importance of managing our cowherd in very simililar conditions to most of our customers and having large contempory groups to find the top end genetics. Genomics can help to explain some of the unknown within a given animals genetic profile. The higher the correlation the more accurate the DNA marker is to predicting the phenotype of that particular trait. In other words, after a cow has had several calves you have a pretty good idea of what she is going to produce from year to year. With the addition of genomics we can gain some of that knowledge at a younger age thus providing you the most accurate tools for your decision making process.

Look for updated DNA EPDs on select bulls on sale day. Bulls tested have one of two icons within their lot information box.

“K.I.S.S.” - A Word on Selection Indexes Selection Indexes

K.I.S.S (Keep It Simple Stupid) K.I.S.S was an ancronym I can remember being used growing up. Wether it was basketball coaches or livestock judging coaches it all meant the same. Sometimes we can make things more complicated than they need to be and K.I.S.S. is a good remindar to acknowledge that sometimes a simplier path does exist. Selection indexes do just that. However, they are based on complex calculations that are hard to follow and sometimes make you scratch your head, in the realm of indexes few fully understand the fine details. Nonetheless, the simplicity and impact one selection tool can have on your cow herd is unmatched. Most if not all breeds publish selection indexes, for this sale we will focus on the ones that relate to Angus and Simmental cattle respectfully.

$EN–Expressed in dollar savings per cow per year, based on a sires daughters. Takes into account lactation energy requirements and differences in mature cow size. $W—Expressed in dollars per head. The expected average difference in future progeny performance for pre-weaning value. $B—Expressed in dollars per head. Helps explain differences in post-weaning and carcass value compared to calves of other sires.

TI—Evaluates sires use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.

API–Evaluates sires use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.

How do Angus and Simmental Indexes relate to each other?

When we look at selection indexes as they relate to each breed we try to simplify. API and $W are similar to one another. These indexes both focus on important traits that impact the cow herds long term profitabilty. In contrast TI and $B are similar to each other. Both favor cattle who’s progeny grow well after weaning and perform on the rail, ignoring maternal value.

What selection index is right for my cow herd?

As with EPDs, an evaluation of your own herd is a good place to start when it comes to determining what index is right for your cow herd.

If decisions are based upon the wrong index the results could be catastrophic. For example, if your goal is to build a cowherd anchored by reproductive excellence, longevity, calving ease, moderate cow size and optimum milk production to avoid high feed costs selection emphisis on $B or TI would likely result in a dissaster. Same can be said if feedlot performance and retained ownership are goals and selection pressure is placed on $W and API, substantial profits would more than likely be left on the table.

The proper scenario to use TI and/or $B? If you sell all of your calves at weaning or retain ownership through the feeding phase use TI and $B. Rewards from selecting high TI and $B cattle will be evident when the calf crop goes to the rail and your check comes in the mail. These cattle generally speaking are built to run on a race track and in this analogy the pasture is a dirt road and the feedlot is a nascar speedway.

Heterosis...It’s Like A Free Lunch What is Heterosis?

Creating Maximum Heterosis

Heterosis can be defined as increase in such characteristics as size, growth rate, fertility, and yield of a hybrid organism over those of its parents. Plant and animal breeders exploit heterosis by mating two different purebred lines that have desirable traits. The first-generation offspring generally show, in greater measure, the desired characteristics of both parents.

Why Simmental and Angus?

To maximize heterosis, breeds need to be genetically different. Therefore a continental and british breed are a good place to start. One advantage is that both breeds have potentail to be homozygous black, enabling offspring to capitilize on a color driven cattle market. The first step to achieving a goal is to know what the goal is and then to gain knowledge of how to get there. Across the page is a definition of heterosis. As it relates to creating maximum heterosis, two different purebred lines need to be used. The more different the breeds the more heterosis is gained. The result is an animal with the most heterozygous genes as possible. However, the challenge is to maximize heterosis while not sacraficing consistancy, color and polled status.

How do I Effectively Capitalize on Heterosis?

The above table outlines our suggestions as it relates to heterosis and how to incorporate our three different bull breed options.

The simplist way to inject heterosis is to utilize the SimAngus bulls. These bulls are compatable with british, commercial mix, continental and SimAngus females. Even still, we feel like the SimAngus bulls are most valuable to a set of mixed commercial cows. What makes these bulls so well suited for commercial mixed cows is the versatility they bring to the table. In a setting where some cows need a calving ease bull while others need a shot of growth a SimAngus bull brings a balanced package with the bonus of heterosis. Another scenerio where we feel a SimAngus bull earns his keep is in smaller operations. Here again the need for a heifer bull limits the potential pounds weaned by mature cows. Why buy 2 bulls when you only need one? For best results use purebred bulls on the opposite breed cows. The blend of brisith and continental cattle is one you will be happy with.

Our goal in developing bulls is to have the bulls grow and express their potential, but not get fat. Ideally, the bulls gain around 3 pounds a day. This is enough for comparison in the groups, but keeps the bulls from getting too fat. We all want light REAR 113 birth weight calves that come unassisted on heifers. 64 pound birth weight is a great place to start, but that’s no surprise as our Barstow Cash calves were our easiest calving group last spring. Follow a good start off with an 118 weaning ratio is where things start getting interesting. Keep the growth going and ratio 122 at yearling. Now things really start falling into place. Added muscle with a 113 rib eye ultrasound measurement ratio and C501 becomes a curve bender. He started life small, grew with the best and will add muscle. Did I mention his dam is quickly becoming one that we all find when studying cows in the pasture and on paper. No surprise as her dam is the same, her dam and her dam, I think you get the idea, one of our best cow families.

His EPD profile is impressive, top 1% for weaning and yearling yet still top 10% calving ease, a great combination for any bull. Most people will pick C501 out phenotypically also. More than once we have driven by the bull pens and someone jumped out to see who the impressive bull standing in the lot was and more times than not, it was Lot 7. Selling ½ semen and ½ possession. Option to double for 100% possession.

We do not want to buy over-fat bulls ourselves and do not feel you do either. Ideally, the bulls gain around 3 pounds a day. Sunflower Genetics Exclusive Bred Heifer Option We extend to you, an oportunity to buy an open yearling heifer at our sale in the spring and turn her into a guaranteed bred heifer in the fall.
