Lyons Ranch 38th Annual Superior Genetics Sale

Page 1

Welcome!

We welcome you to our 38th Annual Superior Genetics Production Sale. Many things have changed since the first Lyons Ranch sale, but our commitment to raising high quality Angus cattle, and the enjoyment and gratitude we feel working with you has not wavered.

We expect our cattle to perform and make a positive impact within your herd and on your bottom line. Our goal for you is the same as we want ourselves: cattle with the most profitability and fewest problems possible. Every animal is the result of our attention to fertility, fleshing ability, performance, calving ease and carcass traits inherent to the Angus breed. We do not breed for one or two numbers on paper -- we want balanced genetics that will continue to serve you and your goals.

In addition to the bulls, we have a special feature – 40 of our own fall bred commercial Angus heifers, selling without papers. Our focus has always been with the commercial cattle producer in mind, and we have had many requests for Lyons bred females. We will sell the bred heifers in groups of three to five head, depending on how they sort up closer to sale time.

If it works for you the day before the sale, Sunday afternoon, March 1st after 3 p.m., all sale cattle will be on display in the order they will sell. This is a time to go through the offering and ask us any questions. We will have BBQ to eat and get you home in good time for the sale the next day. Let us know if you need help with hotels in and around Manhattan.

On Sale Day, Monday, March 2nd, the cattle will be penned and ready by 9:30 a.m. Our neighbors from the McDowell Creek Community will begin serving CAB burgers at 11 a.m. The sale will start at 12:30 p.m. CST.

We thank you for your time and interest in our cattle. We hope you can be with us on sale day -- if not in person, please register and participate on DVAuction.com.

Please reach out and contact us anytime. It’s our goal to be Your Source for Superior Genetics. See you soon!

Understanding the Numbers

A Note about Our Catalog

Our catalog looks different than others you receive. When an animal is registered and DNA tested, the AAA generates more than 40 EPDs and combined trait indexes. We don’t print all those numbers here for simplicity. If you are interested in going deeper into a bull’s pedigree and EPD profile, you can access more information by entering their registration number or name at Angus.org, or get in touch and we will find you the numbers you would like to advance your program.

Think of the parameters and goals you have for your herd before you discount or elevate a young sire. Not every number is pertinent to every herd. Below is an explanation of the numbers in this sale book.

Production & Growth EPDs

CED – Calving Ease Direct EPD is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births that predicts the ease in which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first calf heifers. A higher CED value equals greater calving ease in first calf heifers.

Milk – Maternal Milk EPD is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk in his daughters in comparison to daughters of other sires.

BW – Birth Weight EPD expressed in pounds, is a predictor of that sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny in comparison to that of other sires.

WW – Weaning Weight EPD expressed in pounds, is a predictor of that sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth in comparison to the progeny of other sires.

YW – Yearling Weight EPD expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth in comparison to the progeny of other sires.

CEM – Calving Ease Maternal is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires.

HP – Heifer Pregnancy is a selection tool to predict fertility to increase the probability or chance of a sire’s daughters becoming pregnant as first-calf heifers during a normal breeding season. A higher EPD is the more favorable direction. An HP EPD of 15.0 is in the top 20% of Angus sires.

Every bull in the offering has been DNA tested with Angus GS. After the tests were performed, Angus Genetics Incorporated, AGI, shared the results with the American Angus Association, generating genomic-enhanced EPDs. The GE-EPDs in this offering give a number the same accuracy as if the unproven animal had recorded 8 to 33 calves, depending on the trait.

Carcass EPDs

CW – Carcass Weight EPD expressed in pounds, is a predictor in the difference in size of the hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to that of other sires.

Marb – Marbling EPD expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to that of other sires.

REA – Rib Eye Area EPD expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in rib eye area of a sire’s progeny compared to that of other sires.

Fat – Fat Thickness EPD expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib of a sire’s progeny compared to that of other siress.

DNA

DNA testing on all bulls performed by AGI, Neogen Angus GS. All bulls are parentage verified and BVD-PI negative.

Potential carriers of the DD (non-lethal) condition have been tested. If a bull is a DD carrier, it is noted as DDC beside his registration number in this catalog. No carriers of the lethal conditions OS, AM, NH or CA sell.

*GE-EPDs in this sale book are as of January 26, 2026

To get the most updated and complete EPDs and 3-generation pedigree on each animal, go to Angus.org. In the search bar, enter the bull’s registration number (located under the bull’s name in this catalog).

The Powered By Angus logo in our sale book means that each bull in the offering is registered and backed by the power of data, programs and pedigrees of the American Angus Association. Each bull’s unique AAA registration number is located directly under the lot number and name in this catalog.

Understanding the Numbers

Index Values

$Value Index EPDs are multi trait selection indices, expressed in dollars per head. Many EPDs and traits are combined to create these individual values. The represent an estimate of how a bull’s future progeny will perform, on average, in comparison to those of other sires.

$M – Maternal Weaned Calf Value predicts profitability differences from conception to weaning. $M assumes that individuals retain their own replacement females. Traits included are as follows: calving ease direct, calving ease maternal, weaning weight, milk, heifer pregnancy, docility, mature cow weight, claw set and foot angle.

$W – Weaned Calf Value predicts profitability differences in progeny due to genetics from birth to weaning. The underlying objective being producers will retain 20% of the female progeny as replacements.

$W assumes sale at weaning of the rest of the heifers and all the steers feeder calves. Traits included are birth weight, weaning weight, milk, and mature cow weight.

$B – Beef Value is a terminal index, expressed in dollars per carcass, to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetics for postweaning and carcass traits. Assumes retained ownership and carcass grid. Traits included in the index are yearling weight, dry-matter intake, marbling, carcass weight, ribeye area and fat.

$C – Combined Value an index, expressed in dollars per head, which includes all traits that make up both Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M) and Beef Value ($B) with the objective that commercial producers will replace 20% of their breeding females per year with replacement heifers retained within their own herd. The remaining cull heifer and steer progeny are then assumed to be sent to the feedlot.

$C Assumes retained ownership and selling all steers and cull heifers on a quality-based carcass merit grid.

Performance Data

BW

The actual weight of the bull weighed on the day of his birth.

WW

The bull’s weight adjusted to 205 days of age.

Actual WT, SC

12/6 WT – Actual Weight on December 6, 2024. 12/6 SC – Actual Scrotal Circumference on December 6, 2024.

Updated Scrotal Circumferences will be on the BSE veterinary sheet from KABSU and provided prior to the sale.

Within the Lyons Ranch cowherd

Nursing Ratio or NR is the average weaning weight ratio of all the calves that a bull’s dam has raised to weaning. The ratios are only calculated within our herd, therefore, you cannot compare ratios between breeders. We think the NR is an indicator of good mothering and milk, as well as performance.

It takes years to measure the impact of a single cow and know how good she can be. NR helps us to compare and is an indication of how a cow performed next to her sisters in our herd.

The entire Lyons Ranch cowherd is enrolled in MaternalPlus through the American Angus Association. MaternalPlus is a whole herd reporting program requiring the collection and sharing of more data, including disposal and stayability codes. The goal of the program is to identify true fertility and longevity, among other traits.

-A very memorable year -

Jan was awarded the 47th Golden Spur Award for outstanding leadership and contributions to the beef industry. This honor is for an individual who shows iconic commitment to the land, livestock and people. The Ranching Heritage Association, with AQHA, National Cattleman’s Foundation and three other organizations selected Mom. The ceremony was in Lubbock, Texas, the home of the Ranching Heritage Museum. (Definitely worth a visit and your support!) Mom is the first person from Kansas to be presented with the Golden Spur.

In the spring Frank traveled to Washington, D.C., on a Kansas Honor Flight. The program is set up to show respect and honor to veterans from all branches of the US Military, and the Wamego High School and entire community show so much respect and honor for everyone who has served. Frank served in the US Army; that’s what brought the Lyons family to Kansas in the 1970s. Outstanding students from Wamego High School serve as guides, historians and guardians for the veterans.

This photo is of Wrangler doing work.

Exclusive bloodlines have made cattle that are deep and smooth, and clean fronted. We have fancy, fertile daughters with good udders, and used several sons for natural service, including 1083.
