Message from the President Dear Simmental Enthusiasts, It is still an exciting time to be involved in the cattle business, especially in SimGenetics.

After breeding purebred and SimSolution cattle for over 30 years, I’ve never been more excited about breeding Simmental cattle. Currently the national cattle herd is the smallest it’s ever been since World War II, due to extreme drought and economic challenges. It will take time to rebuild, but as we do we can enjoy beef prices at an all time high as well as high value of breeding cattle.

As proof of the increased value of SimGenetics raised in Ohio, the 43rd annual Eastern Spring Simmental Classic sale held in conjunction with the 27th Ohio Beef Expo, once again set a new record high for the average price per lot. A hearty congratulations goes out to all the members and consignors. This sale’s success would not be possible without producers continuing to select the best from their herds. I look forward to seeing how our membership will top next year’s sale with their top-notch consignments.

As summer approaches we all look forward to the OSA state show which has been held in conjunction with the OJSA Memorial Day Classic for several years. It is always a fun weekend, whether you participate or go to watch and support the junior members. In June some of the OJSA members will be headed to the AJSA Eastern Regional Classic.

This event will be held in Winston-Salem, NC in 2014. Mid-July brings the 34th annual AJSA National Classic which will be held in Louisville, KY along with the Simmental Breeders Sweepstakes show from July 13th to the 20th. Come for a day or more to support our juniors!

Another big summer event is the Ohio State Fair. In 2014 the Simmental breed will be in the second rotation with the junior show to take place on Saturday, July 26th and the open show on Sunday, July 27th. This change is due to the AJSA National Classic concluding within a week of the state fair show. I hope you take advantage of the Simmental show being held over the weekend to either participate or visit with your fellow SimGenetic breeders. It would be nice to fill the stands for both shows.

More opportunities to promote SimGenetics come in the Fall with the Farm Science Review in September and “The Best of Both Worlds” sale in November with the Ohio Angus Association. Both are great opportunities to reach out to other fellow cattle producers outside of the Simmental breed.

On Friday, October 3, 2014, a social event is being planned for Simmental enthusiasts.

An evening of fun and fellowship the night before the “Buckeye’s Finest” sale at the Rolling Hills Farms sale facility, hosted by the Hoovler family. Hopefully a majority of our membership will be able to attend this event and the others planned by your OSA board of trustees.
