Since late last summer, the CSU Seedstock Merchandising Team has been selecting, developing and preparing a great set of yearling bulls and heifers for you. We are offering you the best bulls from the 2015-born calf crop produced from the registered Angus and Hereford seedstock cowherd based at CSU’s Agricultural Research, Development and Education Center (ARDEC) in Fort Collins, Colo.

This includes high-quality sets of both Hereford and Angus bulls, including eight head from the two pens of bulls we took to the National Western Stock Show – a pen of four Angus bulls and a pen of four Hereford bulls. We also have a great set of open commercial yearling heifers to add to your herd.

We are continuing with our modified sale-day schedule, in which we are holding the actual “sale” of cattle at 11:00 a.m. (identification of high bidders and sale prices) followed by a complimentary lunch at 12:30 p.m. This format provides more opportunities for our students to interact with prospective buyers on the morning of the sale. We will continue to use our private treaty sale method with limited bid-off (see below for details). We look forward to seeing you on sale day and discussing how CSU’s program can help yours.

Many thanks to the crew at ARDEC for their help with cattle preparation and sale-day needs. In addition to Jesse French, livestock manager, a number of undergraduate student employees care for the cattle at ARDEC. In addition, two permanent full-time employees continue to help support ARDEC’s mission, including David Escobar, feedyard manager, and our most recent addition, Christina Nash, research manager. Christina oversees the CSU Feed Intake Unit, a facility equipped with GrowSafe technology that enables individual daily feed intake data to be collected on nearly 200 cattle housed in group pens. Christina also coordinates all research activities at ARDEC and serves as the liaison with Animal Sciences faculty conducting research at ARDEC. She is a graduate of CSU’s Department of Animal Sciences (B.S. in 2007).

Finally, a big thank you to faculty in the Department of Animal Sciences, including Dr. Pond, department head, for support of seedstockrelated activities at ARDEC. Our department continues to see unprecedented growth in undergraduate numbers, making us the fifthlargest department on campus. How Sale Day Works Private Treaty Sale Method – Again this year, we will be offering our bulls and heifers for sale via private treaty, for a number of reasons: It enables our students to have more time to interact with bull customers, it gives customers more time to make purchasing decisions, and it fosters an environment that is low-stress for both people and cattle. On sale day, we will be offering the first pick of our bulls; no cattle have been offered in advance or held back.

Base Prices with Bid-Off – All bulls will be pre-priced with a “base price” ranging from $2,500 to $4,500. Heifers will be pre-priced with a base price within each breed, depending on whether the buyer wants “choice” of the pen or wants to purchase the entire pen (see the next page for more information). A listing of all sale prices is included separately with this catalog and will be available on sale day.

No bulls or heifers will be sold on sale day below these minimum prices. Beginning at 11:00 a.m., outside next to the pens of cattle, buyers and selling prices will be determined for each bull and heifer in the respective sale order (i.e., catalog order). At that time, if only one person indicates an interest in an animal at that animal’s base price (by raising their hand to indicate so), then that person will be identified as the buyer by the sale coordinator. If more than one person is interested in an animal, a slow-speed bid-off will be conducted by the sale coordinator using $100 to $250 increments to determine the high bidder and official selling price. No actual auctioneer or ring men will be present.

Sale Order – Cattle will be sold in catalog order beginning with Angus bulls, followed by Hereford bulls, and then commercial heifers.

Beginning at 11:00 a.m., the sale coordinator will go through the sale order only once using the method described previously. Any bulls not sold on sale day will be available beginning March 20, 2016, on a first-come, first-served basis until all are sold by the end of the bull selling season.

No Online Broadcast – In an effort to reduce costs, this year’s sale will not be broadcast via the Internet or satellite video. If you seek assistance in purchasing a bull, but are unable to attend, please contact Jason Ahola, Jesse French or Kevin Pond (contact info on page 1).

CSU Commercial Heifer Offering Again this year, we are offering 21 commercial yearling open heifers via private treaty on sale day. These heifers will be ready to breed this spring, and will be a great addition to any commercial cow herd. Heifers are selling as unregistered.

Heifers will be offered in 3 “pens”: Angus pen (9 head), Hereford pen (6 head), and Black Baldy pen (6 head). A listing of base prices for these heifers, by pen, is included with this catalog and will be available on sale day.

Base prices will be in $/head and based at two levels: 1) “choice” from within a pen – when a buyer wants to select one or a few specific heifer(s) at the choice base price, or 2) purchase the “entire pen” of heifers at the “entire pen” base price. Once half of the heifers in a pen are sold via the choice option, and there is still interest in specific heifers among buyers, additional choices from that pen will be allowed beginning at the "entire pen" base price. When there is no further interest in choosing specific heifers, all of the remaining heifers in the pen will be offered for sale as a group beginning at the "entire pen" base price.

Seedstock Merchandising Team

Greetings from the team, Just as team alumni have said in previous welcome letters, our time on the

Seedstock Merchandising Team has gone by so quickly. Our goal as a team this year was to go to new heights for the 40th Annual Bull Sale. This started with selection, training and prepping four pens of Angus and Hereford bulls and heifers to show at the 110th National Western Stock Show. This included our own show fitting by the Hands-On Committee. We increased our outreach to young producers through social media, growing our Facebook base to nearly 700 followers, and adding Twitter and Instagram. Of course data collection and registration of all our cattle was essential. We hosted a booth 2015-2016 CSU Seedstock Team to recruit new students, greet alumni, and participated at the Range Beef Cow Symposium, Colorado Cattlemen’s Association Mid-Winter Meeting, and the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Convention and Trade Show in San Diego.

Of course none of the successes we achieved this year would have been possible without standing on the accomplishments of past teams, the support of the faculty, ARDEC staff, team alumni, sponsors, and beef industry leaders who have so graciously given of their time and experience. We would also like to thank our friends and family. This has been an incredible opportunity for us and we hope you enjoy the sale and find the right cattle to complement your operation!

The 2015-2016 Seedstock Merchandising Team

Rhiannon Arney Schultz Rhiannon, originally from Gold Hill, Colo., is a senior majoring in Animal Sciences with a minor in Agricultural Business. In the future, she would like to work on a seedstock operation and be involved in the future of cattle genetics. As Co-Chair of the Events Committee, she hopes to improve her communication, leadership, and time management skills. Her committee responsibilities and serving on the Seedstock Team will allow her to gain hands-on experience and skills that are applicable in the real world. She looks forward to working with all of her teammates, showing at the National Western Stock Show and helping manage the 40th Annual CSU Bull Sale.

Katharine Baldwin Katharine is a senior majoring in Animal Science who will graduate from Colorado State University in May 2016. Katharine grew up around a commercial cow-calf operation and has been riding cutting horses for about eight years. Her dreams and aspirations are to raise great cattle while advocating for the beef industry, train great horses within the cow-horse industries, and take care of her family and community members by continuing her education in EMT training and Physician Assistant school.

She is extremely excited and feels truly blessed to work with such amazing people, not only at Colorado State University, but also with her 2015-2016 CSU Seedstock teammates.

Drew Carlson Drew grew up on her family farm and ranch in Atwood, Colo., where she was particularly dedicated to her agricultural way of life. Over the course of ten years she participated in 4-H, exhibiting cattle, hogs and goats at the local and state level.

Through 4-H, she found a simple love for the agriculture industry as a whole, and a passion for showing livestock. As a junior at CSU, she continues her endeavors as an Animal Science and Agriculture Business major. Drew is interested in communicating the importance of a strong agricultural economy to youth through Ag Extension. Her plans also include working with organizations like the Colorado State Fair and National Western Stock Show.

Drew looks forward to networking and making connections within the seedstock, cattle and livestock industries, as well as gaining experience in advertising and promotion.

Victoria “Dixie” Crowe Dixie is a senior Equine Sciences and Journalism and Media Communication double major from Oregon.

Dixie plans to pursue a master’s degree in Animal Science and work in extension to use her journalism production skills to create online multimedia extension packages that use videos, photos, writing about animal health and new science breakthroughs to help horse owners and cattle producers. She loves reading about the latest studies in science journals and writing about it for her blog “The Livestock Lounge.” She finds hands-on experience of being on the team invaluable. As Co-Chair of the Written Committee, she looks forward to increasing the social media reach to young producers and creating the newsletters and sale catalog. She loves working with her teammates and meeting industry leaders, and looks forward to representing CSU at the National Western Stock Show.

Melissa Dighans Missy was raised on a cow-calf operation in Peerless, Mont.

Growing up, she helped show her family’s registered Red Angus cattle at the Northern International Livestock Exposition and the National Western Stock Show.

As an active member of her high school FFA chapter, she went on to serve as 2011-2012 Montana State FFA reporter. Her family now runs commercial Red Angus and she spends her time managing the herd and training horses. Missy graduated from Bismarck State College in 2014 with her A.S. in Farm and Ranch Management.

She decided to attend CSU to get a B.S. in Animal Science. Now a senior, she is thrilled to still be learning about the industry.

She plans to go home to Montana and take over her family’s commercial cattle operation. Her favorite part is working with the cattle, and she is excited about traveling with the team. While on the team she hopes to meet other young producers, network with other people in the industry, and gain knowledge that will help improve her ranch in the future.

Dyllan Freeburg Dyllan is a senior Equine Science major and Agricultural and Resource Economics minor from the small western Washington town of Enumclaw. Dyllan's primary interests lie in production ranching of commercial beef cattle and ranch horses. She is excited and honored to be a part of this year's Seedstock Merchandising Team. She looks forward to learning from the many talented and innovative minds in the cattle industry, building relationships with team and industry members, increasing her knowledge and skills, and representing CSU at the National Western Stock Show.

Tyler Haus Tyler is a junior Animal Science major expecting to graduate in May of 2017. Tyler grew up in Gunnison, Colo., where he has participated in 4-H and FFA, showing all phases of the beef cattle project for nine years.

His family owns a large cow-calf operation 15 miles east of Gunnison that was started in 1908. Tyler is the fifth generation to be involved with the family ranch and looks forward to carrying the family tradition well into the future. Aside from the family ranch, Tyler has a small club calf herd that has helped him gain great experience with fitting and marketing cattle to sell to 4-H and FFA members. His experience in the show arena has made him a great asset to the team as Co-Chair of the HandsOn Committee. Tyler’s motivation to join the Seedstock Team was to learn more about a different aspect of the beef industry, as well as finding innovative applications for the future. Tyler looks forward to representing Colorado State University by using his passion for the beef industry.

Rhett Larsen Rhett is a junior double major in Animal Sciences and Agricultural Business who will graduate in May 2017. He grew up on an irrigated crop farm near La Junta, Colo. Rhett raised and exhibited market lambs and steers for10 years through 4-H. In his last year of 4-H, he served as the 2012- 2013 Colorado State 4-H Treasurer. After finishing his undergraduate degree at CSU, he plans to pursue a master’s degree in ruminant nutrition. Rhett is the Co-Chair of the Hands-On Committee, responsible for making sure all the cattle are prepared for the National Western Stock Show in January and the bull sale in March. As a member of the Seedstock Team, he looks forward to networking with industry professionals and representing CSU at various events, such as the Range Beef Cow Symposium, National Western Stock Show, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association and Colorado Cattlemen’s Association. He is also looking forward to the real world, hands-on learning environment and experience that the team will provide.

CSU Livestock Judging Team Colorado State University’s Livestock Judging program dates back to 1914, when the first team competed at the National Western Stock Show. Students have the opportunity to represent CSU at the most prestigious contests in the nation and travel to nationally recognized livestock shows. More importantly, team members have gone on to serve as leaders in the livestock industry. Many alumni attribute their successes after graduating from CSU to values gained through participation on a judging team.

CSU Meat Judging Team The Meat Judging Program at CSU is well known worldwide in the meat science discipline, as well as for winning national championships in meat judging and other intercollegiate meat judging competitions. Meat judging involves the critical evaluation of carcasses and various other products from market beef, swine and lambs in order to determine their value and to rank them accordingly.

CSU Collegiate Stockgrowers Club The CSU Collegiate Stockgrowers is an organization of young men and women who share an interest in promoting and learning about the livestock industry. The Club was formed in 2014 with the merging of the CSU Collegiate Cattlewomen and CSU Collegiate Cattlemen organizations. Collegiate Stockgrowers members work with the Colorado Cattlemen’s Association (CCA), Colorado Cattlewomen’s Association (CCW), and Colorado Livestock Association (CLA) to promote agriculture, and encourage the personal and professional development of members in order to form the next generation of leaders in the livestock industry.

This includes educating the public about the livestock industry through various means, including partnering with the Colorado Beef Council during the National Western Stock Show in January to interact with the public about the value and importance of beef in Colorado. In addition, Club members assist in educating and exposing hundreds of local elementary students to the livestock industry by participating in Ag Adventure at the CSU ARDEC facility each fall. Collegiate Stockgrowers maintain active involvement in state and national livestock organizations by attending the CCA Mid-Winter Meeting in January, the CCA/CLA Animal Convention in June, and the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Convention and Trade Show each January.

CSU Seedstock Merchandising Team Since 2003, the Seedstock Team has overseen the annual marketing of bulls and heifers produced from the CSU ARDEC Angus and Hereford cowherd in Fort Collins on the fourth Saturday in March. This select group of eight undergraduate students is the result of a formal application and interview process held during the fall. Once selected, team members oversee all preparations for the annual spring production sale, including animal selection, performance data collection, advertising, promotion, and animal preparation. In addition, students show pens of cattle at the National Western Stock Show and represent CSU at events including the Range Cow Beef Symposium, Colorado Cattlemen’s Association Mid-Winter Meeting, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Annual Convention, and Beef Day at the Colorado Farm Show. This combination of experiences provides students with a real-world, hands-on learning environment and an opportunity to network within the beef cattle industry.

Seedstock Team Goes "Big" at the NWSS This year’s CSU Seedstock Merchandising Team entered a record number of CSU animals in the National Western Stock Show in Denver in January 2016. This included 16 head in total, which represented four 4-head pens of cattle entered in pen shows in the yards: Hereford bulls, Hereford heifers, Angus bulls, and Angus heifers. This effort required a significant time commitment by the 8-member Seedstock Team, which included selecting the cattle in October, developing the cattle, tracking individual animal daily gain every 14 days, halter breaking, and fitting. The team completed this task with no outside help. All 8 of the bulls that competed at the NWSS are included in this catalog and will be sold (Angus lots 1-4, Hereford lots 24-27).

In addition to competing in the yards, the Seedstock Team hosted a 200-person complimentary lunch (always held Thursday at noon during the first full week of NWSS -- mark your calendar for next year) that included a live demonstration of the Pulmonary Arterial Pressure (PAP) Test by CSU’s Dr. Tim Holt. The students also provided support to several beef industry groups, including Progressive Cattlemen magazine, Livestock Plus magazine, Mile High Classic Red Angus sale, American Hereford Association, and the Young Presidents Organization educational event, with Miss Rodeo America and the Colorado FFA.

The retained semen-only interest, which is a royalty interest that entitles CSU to ½ of the revenues of any future semen sales, will be owned by CSU and will include the right to collect semen on the bull at CSU’s expense and the buyer’s convenience.
