It’s hard to believe we’re into a new year…Where did 2016? How did those 12 months go by so fast?

How do we slow down and enjoy our life’s journey? I guess we start by enjoying each new day, one day at a time. Appreciate those that surround us -- our family, our friends, our employees and of course caring for our “fourlegged” friends, those Momma cows who are the factory, the foundation of our part of the food production chain.

On the cover of this issue, is a photo of a man, Ken “Dutch” Dethlefs, taken by his granddaughter at the 2015 Nebraska State Fair.

While our membership is made up of people who breed Angus cattle, it is actually the people themselves that is the essence of our organization. Dutch is a friend and mentor to all of us…he is always surrounded by friends and family, especially young people. Passing along knowledge, wisdom and just a “little bit” of himself as he goes about his day. I believe our Association is more about the people that are members than the cattle breed that brings us together. This photo of Dutch, was selected as the top overall photo in the 2016 National Jr. Angus Show photography competition. Congrats to Aliesha Dethlefs for her winning photo of Dutch, her Grandpa, our mentor.

We have more than one mentor in our Association. I look at our Producer of the Year award winners, these are mentors too.

This year’s Producer of the Year award went to a family, who has been involved in breeding Angus cattle in Nebraska for over 50 years. The Loy Glause family received this recognition at our recent banquet in Kearney. You can read their story on page 16.

We have many people in our Association, who give more time, talents, knowledge and skills on a volunteer basis. They are our board members. My appreciation to Brandon Meyer, recently retired South District director who completed serving four years as a director. Also my thanks to Vince Bickel who completed his term as President of our Association. His upbeat attitude as he led the association

this past year is greatly appreciated. He reminds me of the energizer bunny, always on the move.

My thanks also to Trevor Lienemann who completed his seven year run as director and officer of our organization, as he transitions out of the Past President role and into “retirement” from the board.

At our Annual meeting in Kearney in December, Brock Foxhoven of Crofton, was elected as President for 2017. Thanks Brock for agreeing to lead our members this coming year. Dave Nichols, of Chambers was elected Vice President, after serving four years as the North District Director. My appreciation to these two as they will serve as the guiding force these next couple of years. Our association leadership is in good hands.

Newly elected to the board are Jeff Ruggles of McCook in the South District. Ben Andrews of Bassett joins the board as Director in the North District, filling Dave Nichols recently vacated seat on the board. Danny Poss, of Scotia, was re-elected as Director in the Central District. Other board members and their respective Districts are Matt Dolezal, West; John Carlson, Northeast; Brett Weers, Southeast and Chris Fryzek, our Commercial Director. I truly appreciate all them for their input and guidance. They certainly make my job easier. Please check out the photo of our new board, in its entirety. For the very first time in my tenure as Secretary, all ten board members were able to be present for a photo. My thanks to all of them for making the commitment to be in Kearney in early December for our annual meeting and banquet.

Once again, our membership is gearing up for sale season, and many are already heavy into calving season. My wish and prayer for all us is a problem free and safe calving season and successful production sales.

Dear Membership,

irst off, thank you to the Board of Directors and the rest of the Nebraska Angus Association for letting me serve as your president for the year. It's an honor to be able to serve this great association.

With a New Year beginning, along comes the anticipation of upcoming sales and calving season. Best of luck to our producers with their upcoming sales and to those putting in countless hours checking those cows during calving, stay warm, be safe and always remember that without people like you, many would not be able to experience what a great meal is!

In my mind, Rural America is the best place to be, but Nebraska is the greatest place to call home!

To everyone reading this, give yourselves a pat on the back. I say "Thank You" for your endless hours of work and dedication, not only raising the greatest breed of cattle to walk this Earth, being Angus, but to all of agriculture in general. You folks are why Nebraska continues to pave it's way in food production.

This past year has found many reasons to be proud to be from Nebraska; To the NJAA and their chairs for helping put on the greatest national junior angus show that I have heard of; to the state tour that will be talked about for years to come; to those that competed in Denver

Dear Nebraska Angus friends,

W

ith 2016 in the rearview mirror, there are a number of observations to be made, and reasons to embark upon 2017 with a bit more optimism for our industry.

After the November general election, it was good to see the gradual turn upward in cattle prices. Even if it was small, it gave us hope for better days on the horizon. We are hopeful that the federal and state administrations will move forward with policies and legislation that consider the integral role America’s farmers and ranchers play in national and global economies and food supplies. The efficiency and scale with which we produce safe, wholesome food, cannot be replicated anywhere in the world.

As I visited with Angus producers this past year, the depressed cattle market was typically at the front of the conversation. However, I also heard many positive comments about the Angus breed, in particular. Commercial cattlemen seem to have more of an awareness of the benefit of the Certified Angus Beef and the accompanying premiums it can trigger.

From Angus breeders, it was encouraging to hear the positive comments about our CEO, Allen Moczygemba, and the proactive approach he’s taking to preparing our breed for the future. He is very vocal that although the Angus breed is at the top of the industry, we should never become complacent in thinking we have all of the answers, nor take for granted that today’s demand will always be a given. Angus Genetics Incorporated (AGI), Angus Productions Incorporated (API), the Angus Foundation, and Certified Angus Beef are all integral components of that future plan, and the exceptional staff at those four entities are invaluable as we all look forward to the best path for success for all of us.

I’ve addressed the strength of AGI and CAB in past columns, but in this column, I would like to note that Angus Productions Incorporated, with President Eric Grant at the helm, is unparalleled in the beef industry with its creativity and effectiveness in spreading our message through its traditional print sources, as well as Angus Media. API generates an outstanding volume of business for our association not only through the pro-

motional services it provides to Angus breeders, but to other facets of the cattle industry that seek out marketing options, as well.

The role of API has expanded so that it offers not only traditional print advertising design and placement, but also offers web design and hosting, sale book production, photo and video services (Do you want drone footage for advertising?), services through Angus Auctions.com, and overall marketing package options.

API, through the Angus Media team, has been a pioneer in reaching TV, radio, and online audiences. The Angus Report, the weekly broadcast on RFD-TV, is a great source of news in the beef cattle business. The I Am Angus series, features Angus breeders, young and old, and sometimes presents historical segments about our breed. If you miss any of these broadcasts, the team makes sure they are all posted online for your convenience, at either the AAA site, or YouTube.

Angus Media also produces the radio show, Angus Talk, which is broadcast on Sirius XM’s Rural Channel 147 at 10 am CT on Saturdays. There is no other breed in our industry that can begin to boast that kind of media presence.

We certainly have a lot to be proud of in the way API delivers not only your individual message, but the way it is reaching the far corners of our industry, and beyond even that to consumers. It all drives demand, and at the end of the day, we are thankful to be the recipients of that end result!

Therefore, I extend gratitude to the wonderful staff at API for their cutting edge vision, creativity, and hard work.

here is definitely nothing better than spending a weekend in Kearney with my Angus family, enjoying friendships and the start of the show season! The temperatures were tolerable, snow flurries occurred on Saturday, and Sunday’s weather was totally pleasant. Most people enjoy shopping, shopping, and shopping more but I enjoyed catching up with friends, getting to know the younger members, and showing my calves. The Nebraska Junior Angus members and Nebraska Angus Association members celebrated the accomplishments of our Angus association at the annual banquet.

The Nebraska Junior Angus members put together an outstanding semen auction consisting of 26 lots that raised $8,260 for future shows and projects. A silent auction with items donated by members raised an additional $510. I want to personally thank those junior members who served as chairmen of the auctions for their commitment, dedication, and hard work. Both were a total success! On behalf of the members, I also want to thank the Nebraska Angus Association for providing the space and time to hold these events. Thank you to the semen donors, bidders, and buyers because you are a vital part of the Nebraska Junior Angus Association’s success and we members truly appreciate your support and involvement.

The Nebraska Junior Angus Association members held their annual winter meeting on December 3rd. Members introduced themselves before meeting Drew Feller who is our new Regional Manager. The group decided to hold the 2017 Nebraska Junior Angus State Show in Broken Bow over Memorial weekend. Officers will be in charge of organizing the show as well as raising donations.

The next meeting for the Nebraska Junior Angus Association will be February 19th during the Cattle-

men’s Classic. The meeting will follow the completion of the Angus heifer show. A post card will be sent to all juniors as a reminder with the location of the meeting.

The weekend ended with the Winter Show on Sunday. A total of 65 heifers, bulls, steers, market heifers, and crossbred steers entered the ring. We, as members, should be extremely proud of the high-quality animals we led into the ring. On behalf of the Nebraska Junior Angus Association, I would like to thank the chairmen, the advisors, and our regional manager for organizing and assisting with this event. A huge thank you to our parents and supporters as well.

The Winter Show is a special time that allows us to enjoy family, friends, and the Angus breed. If you were not able to make it this year, mark it on your calendars for next year. The jam-packed activities are always scheduled for the first weekend in December.

Time with family and friends, heaps of tasty goodies, lots of laughter, tons of fun, loads of love, and good health are my wishes for you this holiday season! May Santa be good to ALL of you and may 2017 be an awesome year for all Angus members!

Association Strength is its Members

Vince Bickel was born and raised on his family’s farm and ranch in Clearfield, Iowa. Now a Nebraska resident, he lives with his wife Mary and their two sons Ryan and Bryson, just North of Clinton, Nebraska, which is just “a tad West of Gordon”.

Vince grew up on the family ranch and farm in Iowa where they raised commercial Angus cattle and also had a feedlot. Leadership and agricultural opportunities came early in his life as he was very active in 4-H serving as president of his local club and on several boards of bigger areas in Iowa.

Vince owned and operated a farm and ranch which also had a hog finishing operation. He moved to western Nebraska in December of 1996 and worked in sales with a John Deere dealership and started Vin-Mar Cattle Co, their purebred Angus operation in December of 2001.

The focus of the Vin-Mar cowherd is on performance. They have used various bloodlines in the herd but no one line in particular. He relies on high performing, easy fleshing , fertile bloodlines to advance their genetics.

Females are marketed by private treaty each year and their annual bull sale has been on the 2nd Wednesday in March, since the beginning of VinMar Cattle. The National Western Stock Show and the Black Hills Stock

Show are also used as marketing venues. They have been great promotional tools for getting their product out nationwide.

His family is mainstay of his life, and the cattle come second. Mary is a pharmacist at the Pine Ridge Hospital. Their oldest son Ryan is 12 and a 7th grade student at GordonRushville Middle School.

He is active in Baseball, Football, Wrestling, Basketball, and showing Angus cattle. Youngest son Bryson is 9 and is a 4th grader at Rushville Elementary school. He is also active in Baseball, youth Football, and Basketball and enjoys showing Angus Cattle.

They make it down to one Husker game each year as a family as well as go on a family vacation each summer.

Family is a recurring theme with Vince, and his “Angus family”, the Nebraska Association membership is no exception. For Vince, the most rewarding part of being a member of the Nebraska Angus board is the great people of the state. It is nice to meet new people from all parts of this wonderful state and to be engaged in helping promote the best breed of cattle there is in all the land. The members of Nebraska’s state association are all so passionate and thrive to produce the best product available for the customer base, the consumer.

Vince entered the officer role of Nebraska’s Angus board with the mindset of helping to make the association stronger. He is leaving, knowing the leaders we have on the board are a top notch quality set of people who will do nothing but help our association grow and be stronger. One of his Presidential goals was to reach out and get more people to see the benefits of being a member and that is an on-

going process.

Vince’s advice to new members is "Get involved". Nebraska needs new younger members to step up and put their ideas and thoughts to work.

Leaders to help us improve on how we can better serve the membership.

Vince wants to see the future of our association grow and in today's times once again push for our next generation to step up and have a take charge attitude. We live in a technology age and he would like to see us promoting our states quality products better maybe through an app for the phones of today. Just an idea, but one that has tremendous potential.

Vince sees one characteristic in all those who have served as President of our Associatio in the past, have done so with the members best interest in mind and we have tried to make our state better! In closing he says, “Thanks for the great opportunity to lead this association. I truly feel we have the best Angus Cattle in the nation and it has been a privilege to be your president”.

loy & norma Jean Glause family - lazy Black diamond ranch Loy & Norma Jean Glause's Lazy Black Diamond Ranch traces back to 1951 when Loy began with his father and brothers. Loy's father, Philip William Glause, & sons began purchasing registered Angus cattle in 1951 and operated as the Black Diamond Ranch near Worms, NE. Black Diamond Ranch was officially registered with the American Angus Association on March 16, 1956. Not more than a year later, Loy & Norma Jean (Jeanie) Glause were married on March 2, 1957.

The young couple lived on a farm southwest of Worms where they began their family while farming and raising Angus cattle with Loy's father and brothers.

In 1962, Loy & Jeanie moved to a farm 2 miles southeast of Palmer along Hwy 92 - the current operating location of Lazy Black Diamond Ranch.

Over the next decade, they expanded their cow herd as well as their family.

With the potential of their children showing registered cattle and the need for membership with the association, Loy & Jeanie decided to continue their own operation under a separate name.

So, on April 4th, 1973, Loy & Jeanie officially registered their Angus ranch with the American Angus Association calling it "Lazy Black Diamond Ranch".

Lazy Black Diamond Ranch sold private treaty for several years, then from the late 70's to the mid 80's, they held a joint annual production sale at the "3rd City" sale barn in Grand Island along with Loy's brother Paul.

Barrett Patrick Orr arrived on November 9, 2016 and weighed in at 8 lbs. 10 oz. He was 20 ¾ in. long. Barrett is welcomed by his older brothers Grant, Clay and Blaine.

Each summer, the American Angus Association invites college students to gain real-world knowledge and hands-on skills by serving as an intern for the nation’s largest beef breed organization. The 10-week, paid internship programs offer three students the chance to gain experience in the beef cattle industry.

The member-driven organization provides internship opportunities through the events and education department, communications and public relations, and the Angus Journal editorial team. Application details are outlined below, and all materials must be received by Feb. 6, 2017.

A summer intern joining the Association’s events and education department can expect to play a significant role in planning and executing youth events hosted by the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA). The selected intern will assist with preparations, communications and correspondence for junior shows and events.

Applicants should consider themselves a self-starter, detail-oriented and an outgoing individual who has the ability to work well with others.

Livestock and event planning experience is a plus, but not required. Travel to the 2017 National Junior Angus Show (NJAS), Leaders Engaged in Angus Development (LEAD) Conference, and other shows and events is expected.

video and social media is an asset in this fast-paced internship.

Anticipation was evident Monday, Nov. 7, as Angus breeders from across the country crowded into an Indianapolis, Ind., meeting hall for the American Angus Association 133rd Annual Convention of Delegates.

The meeting was the capping event of the three-day Angus Convention, where about 2,000 Angus seedstock and commercial producers, academia and allied industry met for educational sessions and thought-leading keynote lectures — all largely based on leadership, innovation and business culture.

The annual meeting represents the culmination of the fiscal work of the world’s largest beef breed organization as well as the election of officers and new board directors. This year, members also gathered to hear Association CEO Allen Moczygemba unveil the Association’s Long-Range Strategic Plan (LRSP).

“As an Association, we’ve been blessed with strong leadership that has had the resolve to plan for the future, to make the right decision at the right time,” Moczygemba told delegates and attendees. “Those landmark decisions ensured our breed was positioned for long-term growth. This new Long-Range Strategic Plan, led by the Board of Directors, represents that same commitment to innovative decision-making so evident in Angus history.”

Angus board directors and staff pursued a long-range strategic planning process in 2016 to pioneer a new era of progress and to grow the already dominant position of the Angus breed and brand.

“Our leaders spent months establishing the plan, gathering important input from all sectors of the beef cattle industry, from seedstock to cow-calf producers, from feeders to allied industry partners, from marketers to retailers and academia,” Moczygemba explained. “The result was the most comprehensive and far-reaching effort of its kind for the organization.”

Extensive surveys, focus groups and market analyses resulted in a bevy of valuable insight that revealed challenges and opportunities for the Association and registered Angus genetics in a rapidly evolving business. Main themes included changing market dynamics; increased competition, technological and informational needs; and growing international opportunities and beef demand.

The thorough assessment led Association directors to identify five core areas of focus for the organization in the next three years: genetics, commercial programs, leadership, product and research.

“The long-range plan will create new opportunities and a framework for our future,” explained Jim Sitz, Montana Angus breeder and outgoing Association president and chairman of the board. “It includes an expanded focus on commercial producers, and also strengthens our genetic evaluation capabilities. I’m proud to say that we have assembled a plan and a team that challenge a complacent status.”

In his opening remarks as the organization’s newly elected president, Kentucky cattleman Charlie Boyd said the Association’s plans are aggressive and offer the possibility to define the breed’s future.

“I think this is one of the best plans this organization has ever developed, and I’m proud of it,” Boyd said. “It will solidify Angus as the worldwide centerpiece for genetic evaluation and position our organization for further leadership within the industry.”

Key points call for the establishment of the Genomic Education Center, a multi-use facility that will expand the Association’s Saint Joseph, Mo., headquarters as well as its capabilities to conduct research, disseminate information and provide education to the industry; greater service and information sharing with the commercial cattle sector to drive the value of registered Angus genetics; an expanded industry leadership position; creation of recordkeeping platforms; global opportunities and brand awareness; and increased research emphasis on traits like fertility, feet and leg structure and other areas.

“This plan demonstrates that the board and the membership are not taking anything for granted,” Boyd said. “We’re moving forward because it’s our obligation to our past and to doing what’s right for the future of Angus.”

Moczygemba said the work now begins.

“This isn’t a plan that will rest upon a shelf. In the weeks and months ahead, we will set these initiatives in motion in order to ensure success decades down the road,” he said. “It’s another right decision at the right time that will enable each of our 25,000 members to achieve our collective mission of enhancing the genetics of the Angus breed, broadening its influence and expanding the market for high-quality Angus beef worldwide. NEW ANGUS EVENT HEADLINES DENVER ACTIVITIES

Today, its brick walls, steel columns and distinctive green chairs still bear witness to dozens of cattle shows each year, and the old building remains a symbol of the forward-leaning optimism of ranchers. On Jan. 11, 2017, a new evening event will grace the Stadium Arena to not only celebrate the heritage of ranching, but also the unprecedented, century-plus expansion of Angus into the West.

Sponsored by Merial, the event will feature a bull sale, a fundraising auction and live entertainment. It’s also open to any cattle producer interested in attending with additional support from Neogen GeneSeek Operations.

“We’re excited to host this event in Denver, and we want all ranchers to know they’re welcome to attend,” says Allen Moczygemba, American Angus Association CEO. “Our goal is to renew our commitment to the National Western Stock Show, and to reinvigorate the interest of commercial producers and others in Angus events in Denver.”

The event kicks off at 5 p.m. with the National Western Angus Bull Sale, featuring more than 50 lots of top genetics from leading registered operations from across the country. Producers interested in evaluating the bulls prior to the sale may attend the Angus Sale Bull Show beginning at 8 a.m., earlier that day. Cash prizes and awards this year will exceed $10,000, and the grand and reserve grand champion bulls will be awarded a $1,000 genetic package donated by Zoetis.

The sale also includes the Angus Foundation Heifer Package, featuring Basin Lucy 6265, a female donated by the Stevenson family and Basin Angus Ranch of Joliet, Mont.

In addition to vacation packages and other auction fundraising items, several confirmed pregnancies from leading Angus seedstock operations will headline the Foundation’s fundraising offering.

Consignors include 44 Farms, Cameron, Texas; Dameron Angus, Lexington, Ill.; Express Ranches, Yukon, Okla.; Pollard Farms, Waukomis, Okla.; and Vintage Angus Ranch, Modesto, Calif.

The evening wraps up with live entertainment provided by Texas country band Jake Hooker and the Outsiders. A dance floor as well as refreshments will be provided.

Judges are: Kyle Gillooly, Wadley, Ga.; Andy Musgrave, Pittsfield, Ill.; and Jim Vietheer, Wilton, Calif. Attendees will be invited into the showring to inspect bulls after the grand and reserve grand champions have been selected.

Immediately after, the ROV Angus Bull Show is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. in the Stadium Arena. Judges Scott Foster and Andrew Foster, Niles, Mich., will evaluate the ROV entries.

The Junior Angus Heifer Show begins at 8 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 12, in the Stadium Arena. Bill Wilson, Cloverdale, Ind., will judge the junior show. The next day, ROV Angus Females enter the ring, judged again by the Fosters.

The NWSS Angus Pen and Carload Show takes place Saturday, Jan. 14. The

show begins with the bull carloads at 8 a.m. in the Livestock Center Auction Arena, followed by the Angus heifer pens and Angus bull pens. Steve Harrison, Idaho Falls, Idaho; Doug Slattery, Chappell Hill, Texas; and TJ Curtin, Blue Mound, Ill., will serve on the three-judge panel evaluating the group competitions.

Immediate show results will be available online and accessed through the Association’s smartphone application, Angus Mobile. A complete event schedule, showring videos, event photos and breaking news alerts are also available by downloading the app.

While walking through the Yards, be sure to stop by the Angus Tent, where Association, Angus Genetics Inc. (AGI) and Certified Angus Beef LLC (CAB) staff members will be on hand to visit about the latest programs and news from the organization.
