The To Do List, To Be on Top

The National Show season is upon us. We will have a representative at all 5 National Shows. A few things to remember as exhibitors: Have your registration papers with you.

For production awards, send the national office copies of individual cow production records 2 weeks prior to the show. State the show(s) where exhibiting.

Have copies of professional pictures sent direct from photographers to the national office of potential All American and Bell Ringer contestants. Entry form and rules are available in this issue.

For Junior members, make sure to have alternate leadsperson forms filled out.

We met with Katie Schmidt, Outreach Specialist CDCB, and CDCB staff on Tuesday afternoon along with the representatives of the Ayrshire, Guernsey, and Milking Shorthorn breeds. There was much discussion about accuracy of data and how a single numeral off in the identification can cause information to be unusable. Lost data has an impact in all breeds, but none more so than the smaller breeds. Time was spent on how our breeds can better access available information and make better use of that data.

The group was very pleased to have a one-on-one meeting directly with CDCB staff.

In It Together

Office Manager Allicia Horn and I attended the National Cooperative Dairy Database Workshop. The workshop was put together by Council of Dairy Cattle Breeders (CDCB) to address current opportunities and challenges. Those invited were breed associations, companies, and individuals involved in the collection, evaluation and distribution of data into and from the National Cooperator Database. The emphasis was on understanding the collaborative roles while addressing data quality, data flow, and potential new data streams into the National Cooperator Database.

This workshop replaced the annual genomic nominator and lab workshops held in past years.

Somers family enjoys success with homebred animals

“I started showing as soon as I could, and I’ve always shown Brown Swiss,” Somers said. “My mom grew up on a small dairy farm and bought a Brown Swiss cow when she was younger. That is what she loves, and it is what I have come to love, too.”

Somers and her family – parents Paul and Michelle, sister Carolea, and brothers Justin and Ryan – have a small farm, Shadow Valley Dairy, where they keep their show cows and heifers, typically milking four or five cows.

The remainder of their herd is kept at a nearby dairy farm. Somers also owns one cow in partnership with Brown Swiss breeder Ken Main, which is housed at his farm; and she keeps her top show heifers at Interstate Heifer Care throughout the show season. In all, the Somers herd totals about 40 head.

“We flush our best cows, so we have lots of ET babies around, and we feed them the milk,” Somers said. “We don’t ship milk from the cows we are milking, we just feed the calves. We have had seven summer calves this year.”

Showing her Brown Swiss is a passion for Somers, and the adventure has taken her to shows throughout the country: Eastern States Exposition and the Northeast All-Breeds Spring Show in West Springfield, Massachusetts; World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin; All-American Dairy Show in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Kentucky; Mid-Atlantic Brown Swiss Invitational in Frederick, Maryland; as well as the New York State Fair in Syracuse and the New York Spring Show in Hamburg.

At this month’s New York State Halo not only won the class, but went on to be named Junior Champion of both the Fair, her homebred summer yearling, Shadow Valley open and youth divisions.

DD Halo, claimed the Junior Championship titles in both the open and youth divisions. This followed on the heels of other showring success Somers had with Halo earlier this year, including Reserve Junior Championship honors at the New York Spring Show.

Next month, Halo will take on the colored shavings at WDE in Madison.

In addition to Halo and her cow family, Somers has had showring success with another cow family that includes Shadow Valley Bos Tilly and her daughter Foremost Tally. As a winter yearling in 2022, Tally was named Junior Champion of the New York Spring Show.

Somers’s first All-American nomination came in 2022 as well. Bo-Shona Doboy Hermoine, who Somers owns with partner and mentor Ken Main, was nominated in the summer junior two-year-old class, after a seventhplace finish at last year’s Expo.

“Ken has been a great mentor for me,” Somers said of working with Main as a partner. “We talk about cows, and everything he has taught me has made me strive to Judge Steve Wagner (right) congratulates Amelia Somers (left) as he names her do better.”

JOIN US WHERE WDE AND CDCB INTERSECT

My favorite time of the year is just around the corner – World Dairy Expo!

This week is important to many for different reasons, but most know it as a family tradition and a place to showcase genetics on the biggest stage. For me, World Dairy Expo is where I started my career in the industry, and this year, I’m ready to embrace a new role as an event volunteer alongside my duties as CDCB’s Outreach Specialist.

While we are focused on the bright lights of the Showring or reconnecting with friends we only see in Madison, it’s easy to forget in the moment the value this event brings to the dairy industry and the ways the work of the Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding is on display.

Naturally, the first place we can look for the impact of CDCB is in the pavilions and the Showring. Breeding a class winner, the grand champion, or even the best udder in a class, takes a skilled dairyman or woman, years of work, and daily dedication.

Reliable and accurate genetic evaluations also play a role in selecting the correct mating combinations. Cue the Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding.

Walking through the trade show, we witness the collaborative system that makes U.S. genetic evaluations possible. Amongst the rows of booths are stakeholders like National DHIA, dairy record processing centers, genetic companies, genomic testing companies, and breed associations. Each plays an integral role in data collection and data distribution back to producers. They are the framework that makes the U.S. genetic evaluation system possible.

CDCB is most visible in Madison on Wednesday morning when its 9th annual Industry Meeting is held. This year, the program starts at 8 a.m. in The Tanbark and concludes at 11:30 a.m. The event is open to everyone, but we do ask that you register in advance for planning purposes. Wisconsin State Fair

Show Season Natalie was excited about this summer’s show season, and was able to attend the Wisconsin State Fair Junior and Open Shows. She also attended the Wisconsin Brown Swiss State Show, where she helped ringside with ribbons, announcements, and media coverage!

After attending just a few shows as Ambassador this summer, Natalie is excited to dive into the national shows this coming fall.

She is most looking forward to World Dairy Expo, as it is right in her backyard while she attends UW-Madison. She encourages all juniors to reach out to the Ambassadors with any questions, ideas for activities, or contests they would like to participate in at the National Convention this year!

While the show season has just begun, Adele traveled to the Northeast All Breeds Spring Show in Springfield, MA, in April.

However, most recently she took three of her animals to the NY Capital District Canton Brown Swiss Show located in Greenwich, NY, where her winter calf was named Junior Champion of the open and youth show. Next on her list is the Vermont State Brown Swiss Show, and then the Northeast Fall National Brown Swiss show at the Big E in Springfield, MA. She is eager to start connecting with more juniors at each show, especially making the first big trip of the season to the All-American Dairy Show in Harrisburg, PA!

Visiting the Past . . .

Last month, we listed the Breed Champions for Milk and Fat. This month, we are listing Breed Champions for Protein. In the late 70’s and early 80’s, protein testing first became available. Many herds did not initially test for protein and processing centers (DRPC’s) needed to reprogram to process those records. So in the early years, breeders needed to send those protein records directly to the Association to be recognized. Initially, only 305-day records were received, with 365-day and complete records following later. The first Breed Champion for Protein was recognized in 1982. Breed Champions remain until another cow breaks her record.

Elite Dairy II Summer Showcase Highlights July 1, 2023 | Chatham, NY | 111 Head Average $4,555 Chatham, NY – It was a beautiful day in Eastern New York for the Elite Dairy II Summer Showcase. The hosts, Ken Main and Dr. Kenny Joe Manion offered a high-quality cross section of Brown Swiss cattle from the heart of their award-winning Edge View breeding program. At the end of the sale, 111 head sold for an average of $4,555 to 21 states, Canada, and Colombia, South America.

Two outstanding young animals topped the sale each at $23,000.

A fancy Summer Yearling from the 2X World Dairy Expo Grand Champion Cutting Edge Thunder Faye, Edge View F Faraway, kicked off the sale on a high note. The Brown Heaven R Famous daughter already has a blue ribbon as the first Summer Yearling and the Honorable Mention Junior Champion of the 2023 Northeast Spring National Show. She was purchased by Kelly Jo Manion of Kentucky.

Also selling for $23,000 was Edge View F Treesa, a super-uddered Senior TwoYear-Old fresh in March. Sired by Famous as well, she is from the 2E93 AllAmerican Cutting Edge D Trish ETV, a daughter of Dublin-Hills Treats, 2E94 and a World Dairy Expo Grand Champion and All-American. Treesa was purchased by Donald Graft of Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Next on the high-seller list was Twin Hollow Daredevil Blue. The Reserve AllAmerican Sr. 2 Yr-Old, scored VG-86 and is ready to see the classifier again. She sold for $22,750 to John and Bonnie Ayars of Mechanicsburg, Ohio.

Another one to watch for this fall will be Edge View D Darlene ETV, a December 2022 daughter of the 2X Supreme Champion of the World Dairy Expo, Cutting Edge T Delilah. The Switzer Tals Dardvl Doboy ET daughter sold for $19,500 to Cripple Creek Farm, Ballston Spa, New York.

Cutting Edge D Neema, a Daredevil from the Nora Train sold to Donald Graft, Indiana, for $15,500. Neema is an All-American nominated 91-point daughter of the 2X AA nominated JoDee Wonderment Nuclear 2E92.

The 2X All-American brood cow, Cutting Edge B Sonny 3E94, sold for $13,000 to Dylan Fry of New Jersey. Sonny is a Bonanza daughter of 2E92 Cutting Edge PS Storm ET from the Swallow family.

The sale was managed by Modern Associates Sales of St. Paris, Ohio. Chris Hill of MD-Hillbrook Sales expertly sold each lot while Wayne Sliker served as pedigree man. Sales staff around the ring were Brian Garrison, Norman Magnussen, Gordon DeMay, Lee Barber, Joe Sparrow, Dave Wallace and Jake Hushon. Cattle preparation and presentation was taken care of by Tim Coon and crew. Also on hand to help were the Elite Dairy II Farm Staff led by Steven Vail. Modern Associates clerked the sale.

~ OBITUARY ~ ( Cornelius “Neil” Micke

February 26, 1946 - August 7, 2023 Cornelius “Neil” Micke, (77), of Stetsonville, Wisconsin, suffered a cardiac event in his home and passed away at Aspirus Medford on August 7, 2023.

Neil was born to Clarence and Anna (Stuttgen) Micke, on February 26, 1946, in Stanley, Wisconsin. He graduated from Gilman High School in 1964 and subsequently received his Bachelor of Science from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls and Master of Science from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. Neil served in the United States Army from 1968-1970 and saw active combat in Vietnam. He achieved the rank of SPECIALIST 4 and was awarded a Bronze Star and Purple Heart upon discharge from his service.

Neil met and married his lifelong sweetheart while attending the University of Nebraska and they married in 1971. He managed the Iowa State and University of Missouri dairy farms before moving back to Gilman and settling on the home farm, Mile Away Swiss.

There, Neil and Linda raised their beloved children, Jeremy and Rachel, and managed an internationally-known herd of Brown Swiss

until their retirement in 2004. They bred AI bulls Mile Away Credit, Mile Away Craftsman, Mile Away Charter, and Mile Away Medallion, among others. Neil took great pride in breeding and developing cows that produced over 100,000 lbs. lifetime, such as Mile Away Zoldo Casey 2E91.

In addition to farming, Neil was an active member in 4-H, parish, and community affairs, and continued those into retirement while also being involved in district and state level Knights of Columbus.

While retired in Stetsonville, Neil enjoyed woodworking in his shop, wine-making, gardening, and sight-seeing all over the country with Linda in their RV. Neil was a wealth of knowledge on nearly every topic he studied and a deep love for his family. He’s fondly remembered by many for dedication to his community and generosity to those around him.

He will be dearly missed by his wife, Linda, his son and daughter in-law Jeremy and Natalie Micke, his daughter and son in-law, Rachel and Sandy Allen, his grandchildren Michael and Charlie Timmers, his extended grandchildren, Nayli Timmers and Kabri Jankovic, his step-grandchildren, Jaycie and Jordan Goheen, his sister, Sharon Hein, his sister in-law Jolanta Grzeszkowiak, his sisters in law: Connie and Melvin Oltmans, Pamela and Rod Clausen, Amy and Bruce Crouse, Anita and Clarke Evans, Margret and Walt Maimon, Kathy and Greg Lloyd.

He was proceeded in death by his parents Clarence and Anna, brother Kenneth, Sister Phillis Ann Klein, and his brothers- in-law, David Garrels, Marvin Klein, and Norlin Hein.
