WHO IS

Powerline Genetics

Powerline Genetics is a result of the evolution upon a simple idea to begin with the end in mind. Power Genetics feedyards represents a supply chain based on high quality cattle. In order to feed better cattle, you need access to better cattle.

That concept led to a bull marketing business that sells bulls to cattlemen who are involved in the supply chain and continue to make the bulls better as well as accessible to those producers.

These bulls are then used to produce some of the highest performing, feed efficient and high carcass merit calves in the world. Finally bringing those calves back into the feedyards to feed, harvest, collect/validate the data and close the loop.

Today the system has evolved into separate entities Power Genetics and Powerline Genetics who will each focus on their strengths and competencies. Power Genetics is a group of feedyards that retain a contract with Cargill to fill a specific need for high quality cattle.

Powerline Genetics is a bull marketing business now owned by ABS Global Inc. based on the idea of taking the highest profit proven sires in the country and multiplying them. Each party works to build an incredibly strong supply chain for the industry like no other, focused on growth, efficiency and carcass. Powerline Genetics will continue to develop bulls that provide unique genetics to commercial cattleman who want to be involved in a supply chain. Power Genetics will work with those commercial cattleman to procure calves that will be some of the best feeders found anywhere. A simple concept – begin with the end in mind.

The critical need to double global food production by the year 2050 has been forcing change in every aspect of agribusiness, and all indications are that change will be accelerating. Technology to improve productivity, and consumer choices that resonate all the way up the food chain are just a few of the factors influencing the need for business models such as Powerline and Power Genetics throughout agribusiness.

Today the number one profit driver in the feed yard is feed conversion Dan Dorn followed by carcass weight and carcass traits. The perfect carcass sold on a grid is a 1,049lb. Carcass, Prime, Yield grade one. Powerline Genetics goal is to provide the cow calf producer genetics that come closer to hitting the feeder and packer target better than any other seedstock provider. Also Powerline’s goal is drive customer value by creating realized differentiation and predictable experience in your cow herd and ultimately for the consumer.

POWERLINE GENETICS WYOMING BULL SALE

SALE TERMS

TERMS: Terms of the sale are cash or check payable immediately upon conclusion of the sale and before animals will be removed. If Bulls cannot be shipped or picked up the day of sale, arrangements need to be made with Wade Stephens.

RISK: Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. Animals purchased are at the purchaser’s risk as to loss or injury, and will be loaded according to purchaser’s direction. Insurance will be available.

TRUCKING: We encourage everyone to travel as convenient as possible. We will make every effort to assist with trucking arrangements.

GUARANTEE: All bulls have been scrotal measured and fertility tested (BSE) by Powerline Genetics’ veterinarian. Should any bull fail to breed cows, the matter shall be reported to the seller within six months following sale. The bull will then be returned to the seller who has the right to prove the bull a breeder. If the bull proves to be a non-breeder, the seller will return purchase price or replace the animal with another of equal value in full settlement and satisfaction. In no event shall seller bear responsibility for more than the purchase price. If a bull becomes a non-breeder by reason of injury, negligence or mismanagement, the seller’s guarantee shall be void.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Announcements from the auction block will take precedence over statements in catalog.

LIABILITY: Owners nor sale management assume no liability for any accidents that may occur to the animal after it is sold. All persons who attend the sale do so at their own risk and owners or sale personnel assume no liability for accidents.

LAMNESS/SOUNDNESS GUARANTEE: All bulls have been monitored and examined periodically throughout the growth and development process. Should any bull become lame or physically unsound, the matter shall be reported to the seller immediately or within 30 days of delivery. The bull will then be returned to the seller who has the right to prove the bull as lame. If the bull proves to be lame, the seller will return purchase price, credit the purchase price or replace the animal with another of equal value in full settlement and satisfaction. In no event shall seller bear responsibility for more than the purchase price. If a bull becomes lame by reason of injury, negligence or mismanagement, the seller’s guarantee shall be void.

Semen Interest: Powerline Bulls may only be used for natural service with animals owned or leased by you. All other uses of Powerline Bulls are strictly prohibited without the prior written consent of ABS, including (without limitation) semen collection, genotyping, or use in or for research and development.

FIRST BREEDING SEASON INSURANCE MORTALITY AND LOSS OF USE COVERAGE Powerline Genetics Co. has arranged to make Insurance available for the first breeding season for all bulls sold in our spring 2017 bull sales. The coverage will provide traditional Full Mortality coverage for death from all natural and accidental causes including life-threatening injuries. The coverage has been extended to include Loss of Use for the first breeding season.

The coverage will be available sale day for those who choose to insure their bulls. The policy will insure Full Mortality of the bulls from the date of sale until September 1, 2017. All mortality claims will require a veterinarian’s examination. Under the Loss of Use extension of coverage, the bull’s inability to naturally service cows must be diagnosed by a veterinarian and immediately report to Powerline Genetics Co. A claim shall occur if after fourteen continuous days following the date of diagnosis and first report, the bull cannot be returned to natural service. Loss of Use Claims will be settles at 80% of the purchase price until July 15, 2017 and 60% of purchase price from July 16, 2017 until September 1, 2017.

The cost of the coverage is 10% of the purchase price of each bull. Powerline Genetics Co. will pay 5% of the purchase price or one-half the cost of the coverage. Thus, the cost of coverage to each buyer will be 5% of the purchase price. This amount will be added to the cost of your bulls at settlement if the insurance is requested.

Buyers who do not request this coverage sale day will not have Loss of Use Coverage available at a later date. To be eligible for Loss of Use Coverage, a bull must have been determined to be a sound breeder by passing a breeding soundness evaluation as outlined by the Society for Theriogenology.

Salvage, if any, belongs to Powerline Genetics Co. Injured bulls shall be returned to Powerline Genetics Bull Test Center or Powerline Genetics Marketing Specialist before settlement can be made. Applicable settlement will be made after any salvage value has been determined and applied to the applicable settlement. Settlement can be check or credit towards another Powerline Genetics sale.

INSURANCE: Absolutely No Insurance Claim Paid without paid premium.

USING

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) allow for the comparison of animals for their genetic potential as parents for a given trait. The methodology used to calculate EPDs effectively accounts for the environmental or management effects that cannot be transmitted to their offspring (i.e. forage vs. grain finishing). Different management strategies will impact actual performance. Differences in genetic merit are best measured through EPDs over actual performance values. For example, ultrasound IMF scan data for a group of forage- tested bulls may result in a lower average IMF score over a group of yearling bulls finished on grain. While the forage-tested bulls may appear to have less potential for marbling they may actually have equal genetic merit based on the marbling (MARB) EPD (Table 1): Ave IMF Score

When using EPDs it is best to compare the values of potential herd candidates. The difference between two candidates for some trait indicates the potential increase or decrease in that trait. However, profit is rarely based on a single trait and will be based on a combination of performance measures associated with growth, feed efficiency, and carcass value.

A powerful tool that simplifies the selection process is the Power Beef Index (PBI), combining the genetic and profit potential for a bull based on his genetic merit for growth, efficiency and carcass. The index value is measured in dollars per calf marketed. The relative emphasis put on traits includes weaning weight (25%), feed conversion (20%), carcass weight (30%), and carcass quality (25 %) Index

EPD DEFINITIONS

• BIRTH WEIGHT (BW) - in pounds, predicts the weight at birth of the bull’s progeny compared to progeny of other bulls. A bull with a BW EPD of -1 is expected to have progeny which average 3 lb lighter than progeny of a bull with an EPD of +2.

• WEANING WEIGHT (WW) – in pounds is a measure of the weaning growth of a bull’s progeny minus maternal milk production.

• YEARLING WEIGHT (YW) – evaluates adjusted weight performance to 365 days. Yearling weight is highly correlated to carcass weight and mature size.

• CARCASS WEIGHT (CW) - predictor of an animal’s finish weight in pounds.

• RIBEYE AREA (REA) - measured in square inches between the 12th and 13th rib and adjusted to 365 days. This is a good predictor of the total amount of muscle in the carcass and is highly related to carcass weight.

• MARBLING (MARB) - This is a 365-day adjusted marbling score measured in USDA marbling degrees. This is the primary factor in USDA quality grades.

• DRY MATTER INTAKE (DMI) - reported in pounds of feed consumed per day with a lower numeric value being associated with less feed consumed on a dry matter basis. When comparing two bulls a lower number indicates lesser feed intake for comparable gains.

• POWER BEEF INDEX (PBI) – provides a balanced indicator of a bull’s profitability based on a combination of weaning performance, carcass weight, carcass quality and feed intake.

“There is a tremendous shift coming in the beef industry.

As an example in using the PBI, in Table 2 we present three potential herd bull candidates. Last year Buyer A purchased a bull with a 115 PBI and was very pleased with the calves overall performance but would like to see a slight increase in weaning. He is interested in either Bull A or B. In order to see the increase in WW desired, Bull B would potentially bring higher calf weaning weights for this buyer.

Powerline Beef Indexing POWERLINE BEEF INDEXING Expected Progeny Differences (EPD) have become the standard with which we measure genetic merit of beef cattle to make selection decisions. There are many EPD generated for traits related to growth, reproduction, feed efficiency, and carcass traits. A selection index provides the producer a way to incorporate all of this information into a useable form to make selection decisions.

Selection indexes are an important tool because (1) they are economically driven (costs and product values are used to derive economic weightings for EPD); (2) the index reflects the breeding goal of the genetic improvement program; and (3) they are straightforward to interpret and utilize.

The EPD weightings for the Powerline Beef Index (PBI) were generated from a model representing a full commercial production life-cycle approach, including breed effects and hybrid vigor for reproduction, growth and feed intake. Carcass values are modeled on various combinations of weight, yield and marbling separately for steers and heifers. Costs of production included cow-calf and feeding expenses.

Income was based on value of cull cows (weight) and grid-based pricing for fed cattle (under- and over-weight, quality grade and yield grade).

The following traits are contained in the PBI: weaning weight (WW), post-weaning average daily gain (ADG), feed intake (DMI), carcass weight (CW), ribeye area (REA), marbling (MRB), and back fat (BF). After EPD are estimated each one is multiplied by its economic weighting and then summed to provide the PBI value.

Indexes are not perfect. For example, there may not be EPD available for all traits of economic importance. Secondly, while the economic weightings may not be exactly reflective of your own operation, we have attempted to apply these weightings to reflect the average production circumstances for the Powerline program. Third, there are

management differences between operations, and these can affect the amount of existing variation for a particular trait. In spite of these challenges, we are confident that the use of the index in selection provides a single value to help make selection decisions for long-term genetic and economic gain.

WHY DO WE HAVE AN IN-HOUSE EVALUATION? The Expected Progeny Differences (EPD) found in this catalog have been generated by members of the ABS Beef Product Development team based in Deforest, Wisconsin using the latest software and hardware technologies. The ability to produce genetic evaluations in-house has several important benefits. The Powerline evaluation is based on the use of commercial straightbred and crossbred animals from commercial production environments, where there is no direct connection to a breed association. This also provides the ability to run genetic evaluations at any time new data is provided or if there is a need to change models or data. Furthermore, this set up allows us to implement the latest technology improvements as soon as they have been tested for speed and precision. Finally, as we expand the number of EPD on offer, we will have the ability to provide EPD for unique traits not offered by other providers.

Powerline Percentiles USING THE POWERLINE STAR SYSTEM

Powerline’s focus on Growth, Carcass and Efficiency provides endless options to select a bull that will improve your herd for these traits. But how do you boil down all the information? Using the STARs provides a straightforward means of categorizing a bull. Powerline bulls are assigned a STARS based on their ranking in the current calves percentile chart. Bulls with 4-Stars (****) have the higher percentile rankings in the trait of interest. So if you want improve on a trait in your herd without having to focus on a specific numeric value for an EPD the STARS are your tool of choice.

In order to illustrate the process data for a group of candidate bulls is in Table 1 below. Both Bull A and B show bulls in the top 5% of the PBI index.

While very similar Bull A has a higher ranking in Carcass Yield and would be a bull to improve the number of Yield Grade 1’s and 2’s in a calves in the feedlot. Alternatively Bull B adds improvement in Marbling (Quality Grade) so could be selected if improvement in Choice and Prime grading carcasses is desired.

Even with the focus on Growth, Powerline bulls can provide solutions for heifers where calving ease is desired. Typically calving ease bulls (Bull C) will sacrifice a bit of overall growth in order to provide a solution for calving ease and 3 or 4 star bulls should be selected to provide calf birth weights lower than the average when compared to calves from your mature cow herd.

Industry wide feed efficiency, in terms of a reduction in feed intake, is increasingly being looked at as a means of controlling costs in the feedyard.

Selection emphasis for intake can be added to the overall profile of a bull by selecting bulls (Bull D) that balance growth and carcass with a higher ranking for improved Feed Intake (DMI).

Overall using the Powerline Star system in combination with the PBI index allows the producer to focus on improved genetic merit for without having to weight the values of each individual EPD.
