> LETTER FROM THE EDITOR HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I imagine many of us found a lot of relief and joy saying goodbye to the year 2020. What a year! As I am writing this however, I am wondering where time went in the month of January. Between calving, photographing sale animals, showing cattle at OKC, and a minor quarantine stint for myself, I am not sure I have even processed that 2021 is in full swing.

I’m excited for 2021 and have HIGH HOPES that we will be seeing all your smiling faces at sales and shows across the country. It was so great to see those of you at NAILE and have the ability to walk across the green shavings with our livestock. Congratulations to all of the many winners and Thank You to all of those who helped make it a success.

This issue is a bit unique in its stories and content, but great things continue to evolve and grow. At Ringside we are constantly brainstorming ways to make this a great marketing platform and informational resource for you, our readers. Cruz will be hitting the road and attending several of the major sales this Spring and would love to chat about how Ringside could partner with your operation.

I am excited to say Ringside and Emily Adcock Photography will be back in action at many shows across the country this year including: Freedom Fest, AAJS and Youth Sheep Expo. I hope to see you soon whether it be in person or within our pages.

> LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

When we think about 2020, we think about adapting. Adapting to a different way of marketing and showing livestock. Using online sales and social media became an essential aspect of moving and selling livestock around the country. People stepped up all year to organize new shows to allow everyone to do what we all enjoy. It is impressive to see the livestock industry continue to thrive and move forwards no matter what is thrown in our direction.

Moving into 2021 there are still many unknowns around rules and regulations for going places but I feel confident that the livestock industry will continue to thrive and move forwards, just as we have in the past. While I feel online sales will continue to be a great way to market animals, I am looking forward to attending live sales again this year. We also have plans to continue to grow and adapt our magazine to best fit the needs of our advertisers and industry.

Stay warm and safe this winter and we will catch up in the spring!

Father/Daughter Wager

A Story of Two Determined Girls and Two Unsuspecting, Supporting Fathers who Thought the Hairs on Thier Head & Face Were Safe.

SHELBIE’S STORY: My first year being able to show sheep in 4-H was in 2018. When my dad and I were going to a show that summer I asked him if I won the State Fair Junior show overall with my ram or ewe could I shave his head? My dad told me how tough that show was and that it might not ever happen. I knew it was but I asked if he would still bet me and he said yes. My dad is always very weird and I knew he would take the bet.

I didn’t win anything that year. I never talked to him about the bet again.

This summer I showed two rams that I raised named Pugsley and Gomez. They started to win some of the shows we went to. I told him about the bet we had and he had forgot! I started to tell my friends that we show with about our bet and they were all excited because he had been growing his hair long and I didn’t like it!

They moved our State Show to September this year because of Covid. I won the Southdown ram show Friday night with Pugsley. I got to show in the Supreme Drive Saturday and it was my first time being able to do that.

I am always really nervous when I show and I don’t let me dad watch me because he paces too much. They picked me and Pugsley as Supreme Overall Ram! I was showing with my friend Brea and she hugged me.

When I walked out of the ring Stephanie and Rodney Knittel hugged me and then my dad hugged me and I told him “I get to shave your head now!”.

I didn’t get to do it that day like I wanted to because we all had to leave as soon as the show was over. My dad tried talking me out of shaving his head because his hair was getting really long and he liked it. But one day my friend Rodney Knittel put on Facebook about the bet and said it was going to happen in Louisville. When my dad picked me up from school that Friday on the way to his house, he told me what Rodney did. I thought it was really funny that he did that. Everyone started talking about it and I was so excited to go to Louisville.

When we got down there all my friends kept asking when we were going to do it 8 | Ringside

because they wanted to watch. We decided to do it Saturday night because everyone was there. I was really nervous because I didn’t want to knick my dad’s head. I used my Andis to shave his head and tried to use blades that didn’t work so I had to use really sharp ones.

My dad said I went slow and the blades were hot on his head. All my friends and my dad’s friends were watching and Rodney even went Facebook Live. When I got done, I thought my dad looked weird. His hair is growing back fast. He said he won’t bet me anymore.

EMMA’S STORY: “Emma come watch this! This dad made a bet with his daughter that if she ever won their state fair with a home grown, she would get to shave his head!” This whole thing started with the Facebook video of Shelbie Wood shaving her dad’s head.

Like most dad’s my dad was super hard on me before NAILE saying I wasn’t working my sheep enough and that I couldn’t complain when I lost. Saturday night after watching the video of Shelbie and her dad, my dad thought he would be funny and make a bet with me! As he walked to the bathroom in our hotel room he jokingly said, “So Emma! If you win Supreme tomorrow, you can shave my beard.” I immediately jumped up and yelled “For REAL?!?”. He laughed and said “Sure”.

The next day all we could really think about was getting ready to compete against the more than 400 amazing Southdowns. I am pretty sure he didn’t even think I was going to win Champion Southdown Ewe. First, because he said I “hadn’t worked Luna enough” and second, because I had been fortunate enough to have an amazing summer and a trifecta was just not something any of us ever really imagined. To say we were speechless after winning the Southdown show Sunday is an understatement.

Now we waited for the Supreme Drive! We all knew I had some very stiff competition and my

dad’s beard was not really on anyone’s mind. My mom said my dad was a nervous wreck, swinging his arms the entire half hour the judges worked us. I did it! I had the Supreme Ewe at NAILE! I couldn’t believe it!

As excited as and overwhelmed as I was, I had not forgotten about the nonchalant bet my dad NEVER imagined he would lose! As soon as he walked into the arena for pictures, I looked at him with a big smile and said, “Say bye-bye to your beard!”.

Pigs -N- Blanket Show season is quickly approaching for my kids and I am defiantly having to adjust due to the current pandemic. We are getting to show and for that we are grateful. However, we are having to adjust to not being able to cook in the barns which means protein packed snacks that do not require refrigeration or heating up.

Ingredients

2 cans of Grands Big and Flaky Crescent rolls.

1 large package of your choice of little smokies

I like to roll out the crescent rolls and place as many little smokies on the raw dough as I can fit. I then take a pizza cutter and between all of the little smokies. Then I roll them and place on a greased cookie sheet. Bake at 375 degrees for 10-12 minutes.

After I take them out of the oven, I let them cool to room temperature and place in a large zip-lock bag to pack for the show.

Ringside Stories:

A Tale of Two Heads

A Story from the Lambing Barn at Rivenoak Farms. Thank you Morgan Johnson and Family for Sharing This Story.

Lambing started off abnormally here at Rivenoak. When we went out to the barn, there was a ewe in labor. We tried to help assist, and pull the lamb, but when a leg with three hooves appeared, we decided to call for help. The presence of the other leg (the one with 3 hooves) made it difficult to understand how the lambs were inside the ewe. At first, we thought that there were two separate lambs coming at the same time. One breech and one headfirst. We kept trying to push the other leg back. Afterwards, seeing how the leg was attached, basically on the back of the conjoined twins, it was easy to see how we were confused on the lamb(s) position

With the help of our vet, we were able to deliver the twin, conjoined ram lambs naturally (unbelievably). The lambs were not alive at the time of delivery but had not been dead for long (less than 24 hours). The ewe was 11 years old, in average condition and in good health.

The ram lambs were born with one heart and one set of lungs. The heart was a bit bigger than what a normal heart would appear. They also had two digestive tracts. The lambs shared the area from their shoulders to their sternum area. One of the lambs was “normal”, and the other one had some deformities in his face. Each of the lambs had their own front leg and one back leg to each body. There was one shared leg that was on the lamb’s back. It wasn’t joined to any bone and was barely attached.

After we had the opportunity to post this information on Facebook, one of my dad’s fraternity brothers had asked for more pictures of the lambs. Dr. Tim Snyder, a professor at Oklahoma State University, had explained to us that the egg did not properly split 2 - 13 days after fertilization. This would be just because of factors that caused the egg not to split, not the result of inbreeding. Dr Snyder went on to say that the ewe could have had 10,000 more lambs and never have another set of conjoined twins

A couple days after the lambs were delivered, my sister and I were very intrigued about what happened. We had a phone in our hands and were looking at pictures of different kinds of animals that were born as conjoined twins, or two heads, or two 14 | Ringside

bodies and one head. While looking at the images, I stumbled across an article that Dr. Jerry Flanders, VIP Animal Care, wrote. He had shared that the occurrence of this disorder is a ratio of 3:1 more likely to happen in females. He had also stated that he read an article that conjoined twins happen once in every 40,000 births but only once in every 200,000 live births. It is a fascinating article and can be found at vipanimalcare. com.

We feel very fortunate to have a great local vet, Dr. Craig Zimmerly who took the time to assist the ewe, then took the time to discuss what we found. A big thanks for Dr. Tim Snyder and Dr. Jerry Flanders for their information and insight.

New England Sheep & Wool Growers Association (NESWGA)

January 2021

Dear Friends,

For more than 35 years, the New England Sheep and Wool Growers Association has sponsored an annual livestock show for youth in the northeast region. Over the years it has grown and is now revered as one of the premier youth sheep shows in the country. The Northeast Youth Sheep Show hosts more than 150 exhibitors and their families each July and this year we need your help to make sure it happens.

Many businesses and nonprofit organizations have suffered financially as a result of the ongoing pandemic, and unfortunately the Northeast Youth Sheep Show is no different. With our annual fundraisers cancelled, we face a budget deficit heading into show season 2021 and need to raise $15,000 to run the show.

NEYSS is not just a regular show, it has become the unofficial start of show season for many families and is a place for friends to join together for a long weekend of learning, growing, camaraderie, and fun. ​ Parents and volunteers, many of whom showed here themselves in years past, bring their families to take part each year.​ Youth who attend this event participate in skill-a-thons, quiz bowl competitions, judging contests, and clinics in addition to the regular sheep show. Experiences like these play a formative role in the development of these young people and shape the paths for their adult lives; these kids are the future of the agriculture industry!

This year, the NESWGA is asking for your support as a sponsor. SUFFOLK NEWS FROM AMANDA EVERTS, Executive Secretary

Wow, it’s hard to believe the end of February is near! I’m sure most of are all busy with lambing and you are seeing a great set of Suffolk lambs on the ground! Here’s a few items I would like to pass along…

2021 Membership Dues Pay your membership dues early and save! Membership dues paid before March 1 are $40. Membership dues submitted after March 1 are $60, so members are encouraged to send their payments early.

Also, to be listed in this year’s Membership Directory, dues must be paid prior to March 1.

2021 Membership Directory Work has begun on the 2021 Suffolk Breeders Directory. This year the USSA will be working with The Showtimes to create the directory and ads will be sold by the USSA. The directory mailing list is expanding by several hundred and mailed first class to be in mailboxes around April 10th! Consider this opportunity to showcase your flock with a directory ad. Ad reservation deadline is Feb. 15th! Ads content can be submitted online – visit suffolks.org for form link! Again, this year, the directory will be posted online, another great way to reach MORE potential buyers! Consider advertising this year!

USSA members who have paid by their membership dues by March 1st will be listed in the membership directory. Additionally, those members will be able to include what they offer for sale (limited to 12 words).

Suffolk Registry Programs The United Suffolk Sheep Association offers several registry programs. If you raise Suffolk sheep, see if one of these programs fits your needs if you’re not already registering them!

GAP: The newly implemented Suffolk genetic acquisition program (GAP) offers USSA members, who own Suffolk ewes that have not been registered for generations, a multi-step procedure to register those females. Add value to your Suffolk flock by building a registered herd. This program is only available for one more year. To explore the opportunity to recover your Suffolk genetics, visit the USSA website at suffolks.org for details on this genetic recovery program.

AMNESTY: The United Suffolk Sheep Association has adopted a permanent Amnesty Program. This program allows flocks to catch up on past registry work at a reduced cost. To enroll in this program flocks must complete a formal application. Flocks are eligible to enroll in the program every seven years. Yearlings are not currently eligible for the program. The program is open to purebred, percentage, and GAP Suffolks. To learn more, please contact the USSA Office.

PERCENTAGE: The United Suffolk Sheep Association offers a Suffolk Percentage Program for members to identify and maintain records on their non-purebred replacement seed stock.

Percentage registered Suffolks will receive green Percentage Registration Certificates which indicates the animal’s purity in the bottom-left corner of the certificate. Animals will receive this paper until they have reached 15/16 or 94% pure. At 94% the animal is considered to be a purebred Suffolk and will receive a white linen registration paper. For an animal to enter the Percentage Program, 24 | Ringside

at least one parent must be registered as a Purebred or Percentage Suffolk. Contact the USSA Office to learn more about this program and how your flock can be enrolled.

Email Blasts: Send an email blast ad to over 1000 Suffolk members and enthusiasts across the United States. Blasts are $100.

Website Banner Ads: Your ad will be seen by current breeders and prospective Suffolk buyers! Rates are extremely affordable!

Suffolk Online Sales This year’s sales include a Futurity Ewe Lamb Sale on April 19, an Online Suffolk Sale on April 26, Foundation Fundraiser/Online Semen Sale on May 3, Online Suffolk Sale on May 24 and Bred Ewe Sale in October. Watch the USSA website and Facebook page for more details!

USSA Futurity Program Have you considered nominating you ewe lambs this year in the USSA futurity? There are several options for breeders to nominate ewe lambs; Consignment Sales, Organized Production Sales and/ or Organized Internet Sales. To get more details please contact the USSA Office or check out the 2021 USSA Futurity Rules which will be posted on the association’s website soon! Remember, there is now a bred and owned division!

To participate, all you have to do is purchase a nominated ewe lamb, exhibit in eligible classes and turn in your futurity points forms to the USSA Office. It’s that easy! If you are interested in learning more about the program or would like to find out where you can purchase a nominated a ewe lamb, contact the USSA Office!

Remember, there’s now a bred and owned division!

National Jr. Suffolk Show The 2021 National Jr. Suffolk Show will be held with the AllAmerican Junior Sheep Show in Springfield, Illinois. All entry information can be found on the All-American’s website – www. allamericanjuniorshow.com. The United Suffolk Sheep Foundation is in search of breeders who would like to participate in the Ewe Lamb Giveaway by pledging to donate a ewe lamb (donation will occur spring of 2022). This giving is a tax deductible, charitable donation. This program continues to gain popularity, this past fall there were over 70 videos submitted by youth from coast to coast excited to win 1 of 5 ewe lambs that were to be given away! Breeders who pledge a ewe lamb will be listed on the association’s website and promotional material for the program. Once the winning video is selected, the Ewe Lamb Giveaway winner will choose, from the breeders pledging in their district, who they would like their ewe lamb to come from. From The Kitchen Instant Pot Pasta with American Lamb & Mint

Servings: 6 Preparation time: 10 Minutes Cook time: 15 minutes INGREDIENTS: 1 Tablespoon olive oil 1 pound American Ground Lamb 4 cloves garlic minced 3 green onions sliced (whites and greens separated) 2 1/2 cups chicken broth 8 ounces pasta ½ package (I used mini penne) 12 ounces frozen green beans or ¾ lb 1 lemon zested and juiced 1/4 cup fresh mint chopped 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese 2 Tablespoons butter Salt and pepper to taste

Open the lid, stir in the lemon juice and zest, remaining green onions, mint, parmesan and butter. Let sit with the lid on for 5 minutes.

Season with additional salt and pepper, if needed.

DIRECTIONS: Set Instant Pot to SAUTE, add olive oil. Once hot, add the ground lamb and season with salt and pepper. Cook for 4-6 minutes, breaking apart with a spoon, until browned.

Add garlic and white parts of onions and sauté for 2-4 minutes, until fragrant.

Pour in the broth and scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the Instant Pot. Add the pasta.

Cover and seal the lid – turn the vent to sealing.

Hit CANCEL then press the MANUAL (high pressure) button and set the timer to 4 minutes (or ½ the time of the pasta package directions).

It will take about 15 minutes for Instant Pot to come to full pressure, then the display will show a countdown timer.

Once the 4 minutes are up, hit CANCEL and do a quick pressure release to release the pressure.
