Greetings from the crew at Bar CK... ...we would like to invite you to our 4th annual “Profit Sharing Bull & Female Sale” to be held at the ranch on February 14, 2015. Our slogan, “Bred for Profit and Raised to Work”, speaks first to our commitment to supply ranchers with genetics that are designed to improve herd profitability, and secondly, to raise those bulls in a manner that enhances their ability to be a reliable vector for those genetics.

It has been nearly 5 years since Simmental & Red Angus published the first joint, multi-breed genetic evaluation, and in that time, we have been able to not only compare our calf crop to other Sim-Angus, but against our colleages at Red Angus and Canadian Angus. This has enabled us to produce SimAngus range bulls that are comparable to the best Angus /Red Angus sires for Carcass Quality and Calving Ease.

We are especially excited about the quality and value in our 2015 female offering. The average age of our 75 female lots is less than 4 years of age, and the oldest females we’ll offer turned 7 this fall - just in the prime of their reproductive life. The females include some of our rising stars - top 1% API open yearlings as well as predictable matrons who’ve produced several of the bulls in this year’s offering.

If you can, come early. The cattle will be available for viewing all day Friday and we will serve food and beverages for a Valentine’s eve dinner. Rancher and Livestock Representatives will be on hand to give expert advice on how to best utilize marketing programs, cross breeding, and the production cycle profit indices, API & TI. Health: All bulls over 13 months of age will be fertility tested. Bulls were treated prebreeding with BoviSheild Gold, Ultrabac 8, Long Range injectable wormer, Saber pour on, Vibrin, and Fusobactrium. If bulls are going out of state they may need additional tests. This process may take a few days. Bar CK Ranch will feed and house animals during this process.

How the Auction Works

Internet Bidding on Superior “Click to Bid” & EPD Terminology EPD (Expected Progeny Difference) EPDs predict differences in progeny performance and are the most meaningful predictor of animals’ genetic merit.

API (All-Purpose Index): Predicts differences in sires’ contribution to profitabiity when mated to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold on a grade and yield basis.

TI (Terminal Index): Predicts differences in sires’ contribution to profitabiity when mated to both Angus mature cows and all offspring are put on feed and sold on a grade and yield basis.

CE (Calving Ease): Predicts the probability of calves being born out of 2-yr-old heifers.

BW (Birth Weight): Predicts differences in pounds of birth weight.

WW (Weaning Weight): Predicts differences in pounds of weaning weight.

ADG (Average Daily Gain): Predicts differences in post-weaning gain, expressed in pounds per day.

YW (Yearling Weight): Predicts differences in pounds of yearling weight.

MCE (Maternal Calving Ease): Predicts the probability of 2-yr-old daughters calving unassisted.

MILK (Milk): Predicts dfferences in weaning weight due to milk.

CW (Carcass Weight): Predicts differences in pounds of hot carcass weight.

YG (Yield Grade): Predicts differences in USDA Yield Grade Score.

MARB (Marbling Score): Predicts differences in marbling score

HOW TO PARTICIPATE AS AN ABSENTEE BUYER We have made preparations to bid and buy your livestock through Superior Productions’ “Call or Click-To-Bid” service for those unable to attend in person on sale day. Please note that all of the lots in the sale will also be available for viewing online prior to sale day at www.superiorlivestock.com.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS

Turn in Bids Over the Phone. This is our traditional method of buying livestock. To get started simply go online to www.superiorlivestock.com and click on the tab titled “Register for a Buyer Number”. Select the registration form for Superior Productions and print the registration form, fill it out and fax it in to Superior Productions at (817) 378-3380 with a signature on it. You can also mail it in to the address provided on the form. Upon receipt of this information Superior will call you with a buyer’s number and the bid line phone number that you will use on sale day to place bids over the phone.

Click-To-Bid. This is Superior’s newest way to buy livestock!

Please note that high speed internet is required – this is not for dial-up or satellite internet. Registration is free, but you must become a member of www.superiorclicktobid.com to sign up.

Becoming a member is easy – just go to the homepage of www. superiorclicktobid.com and follow the out-lined steps to get started. Input your information and select a username and password.

You will receive an e-mail confirming you are a member. From that point forward you just have to sign in and select the sale you would like to register for and once approved you will receive an e-mail confirming which sale you are now registered for.

Viewing the Auction. The sale will be broadcast live on the internet at www.superiorclicktobid.com and www.superiorlivestock.com – just go to the home page and select the auction. Remember, you can call in to bid over the phone when watching on the internet if you have registered for that service, but you must be a member of www.superiorclicktobid.com to “click-to-bid” and bid online. Your computer must have Flash Media Player installed to view the auction.

Bidders who are successful in making purchases will be contacted by Superior Productions after the sale to settle payment and discover your shipping plans.

Predicting Profit Economic Indexes Simplify Selection

Ask a group of Ranchers, “What’s the most important trait for your sustained success?”

Chances are you’ll get responses that include cow herd traits like Stayability or Heifer Pregnancy. Maybe you’ll get Calving Ease, Quality Grade, or Post-Weaning Gain. Certainly someone will throw out Feed Efficiency. But, the obvious answer is the one that’s least often heard - Profit!

API & TI are economic selection indexes; sometimes called profitability indexes. They are a single number predictions derived from the weighted impact of each of an animals’ economically relevant traits (ERT) towards enterprise wide profitability. Just as EPDs predict relative performance, API and TI predict relative profitability - a bull with an API of 140 is expected to produce $20 more profit per cow exposed than a bull with an API of 120.

API includes all those traits that impact profitability when bulls are selected by an operation to breed both Angus cows and heifers, where females will be retained as required to sustain constant herd size. Cull heifers and all steers are weaned, placed on feed, and marketed on a yield and grade basis.

For operations that do not raise their own replacements, TI predicts the relative impact on profitability for bulls that are mated to mature Angus cows and all calves are weaned, fed and sold on a yield and grade basis.

2015 marks the 72nd anniversary of selection indexes’ application in animal breeding. Both API & TI are built on economic modeling that counts the impact of one trait unit of each ERT, then accumulates the collective impact of an animals EPD/ERT profile on profitability. API and TI are both “Systems Thinking” applied to beef cattle selection. When the goal is Profit these indexes represent a more direct and simplified approach to achieving that goal.

We weaned those calves at less than 200 days in a very dry year and averaged 550 pounds on the steers and 500 on the heifers. I know there are people who criticize API, but I know it works!”

Fall Calving cows (Lots 213-275) will remain at Bar CK until their current calf is weaned (approx May 1st). Buyers are asked to place a 50% deposit on all fall calving cows and pay the remaining

50% when they pick the cows up later this spring. l Bar CK will feed and care for these cattle and guarantee their health, soundness and pregnancy.

Announcements from the auction block shall take precedence over this catalog and all other printed material.

Guarantee:

We are selling full possession, full salvage value and 50% revenue sharing semen interest in every bull. The buyer has total control of how bull is handled plus gets 100% of the salvage value. This simply gives Bar CK the right to half of the semen sales revenue if at sometime in the future semen sales becomes a possibility. If a buyer is not interested in marketing the semen from a bull then Bar CK has the right to collect a semen bank on the bull at our cost and the buyer’s convenience. This semen bank would be 100% owned by Bar CK for our use or marketing.

Realistically speaking it is unlikely that large amounts of semen will be sold from very many bulls. However, we have several top end bulls whose true breeding value will only be known after progeny data has been recorded and evaluated. Even bulls sold to commercial herds may become popular at a later time, especially if carcass data is collected on their calves. Contact us for different options on how data can be collected on sires relatively inexpensively. If you choose to collect semen from one of these bulls as an “insurance policy” for your own use that semen is 100% yours. We want to have a great partnership with you.

$50.00/bull discounts if 5 or more are purchased and $100/bull if 10 or more are purchased.

All cattle sell under the suggested terms and conditions of the American Simmental Association (ASA). Sale cattle are free of all know testable genetic defects, currently monitored by the ASA. In addition all bulls are guaranteed to be fertile and come with a 90 day first breeding season warranty by Bar CK. Should one of these bulls become incapable of breeding cows, Bar CK will exchange the bull with a suitable replacement or provide you with a credit equal to the bull’s purchase price less his salvage value. This guarantee does not apply bulls that die or are killed and is not transferable to another buyer.

Livestock Mortality insurance:

Mortality Insurance on your purchases can be obtained at time of settlement.

Sale Females - Breeding/Calving Information:

With the exception of the open heifers, all females will have either calved and/or been bred (AI an/or pasture service) prior to the sale.

Status updates for the female offering will be made available through the BarCK website: www.barckcattle.com and through the Superior “Click-2-Bid” website: www.superiorclicktobid.com.

Retained Semen Interest:

Feeding and Possession Options:

Bar CK Ranch will offer a $50 discount per lot for buyers picking up their purchases on sale day. All bulls can be kept free of charge until March 1, 2015. Bulls can be fed at Bar CK Ranch until spring breeding turn out for $4.00/day. We will take care of the bulls to the best of our ability, but we recommend that you protect your investment with insurance.
