ASA News ASA Foundation Scholarships Each year the American Salers Foundation provides scholarships to a member of the American Salers Junior Association to further their education. This year, there were eight outstanding applicants with the following four being awarded scholarships: Melanie Parke, Drummond, Mont., was the recipient of the Bud Christensen Memorial Scholarship.

Melanie is a student at Brigham Young University of Idaho pursuing a degree in Animal Science.

Justin Doubet, Parker, Colo., received the Tim Smith Memorial Scholarship.

Justin is a senior at Chaparral High School and is planning to attend North Eastern Junior College in Sterling, Colo. this coming fall.

Matthew Price, Mountain View, Mo., was awarded an ASA Foundation Scholarship. Matthew is a senior at Liberty High School and is planning to pursue a degree in general agriculture at the University of Missouri or Missouri State University.

Valerie Barnett, Wellington, Mo., received the second ASA Foundation Scholarship which will help her pursue a degree in Elementary Education in the fall at Northwest Missouri State University.

Efficiency Matters

by Jim Doubet What are those gray feed bunks at Midland Bull Test and other facilities around the country? Well, they are not new to Midland, one of the early adopters of the GrowSafe System for evaluating feed efficiency. Those bunk systems individually record the weight of feed that is in each bunk and which animal is eating out of the bunk (via an individual electronic ID tag), to arrive at a very highly accurate weight of the amount of feed consumed by an animal each time it comes to the bunk to eat. All of this information is communicated to a computer in the Midland office that records all of the data.

Feed Conversion has historically been the sole measure of feed efficiency and is expressed as pounds of feed per pound of gain. However, selection on this alone can favor larger framed animals, which in turn will increase maintenance requirements, which will increase appetite and result in an increase in the amount of feed and grass consumed. A recent study conducted by the US Meat Animal Research Center found Angus cattle to have the largest appetite of all cattle in the study.

Residual Feed Intake (RFI) is the method by which feed efficiency is measured with the GrowSafe System. This is the amount of feed an animal consumes each day above or below what you would expect it to be gaining based on maintenance and growth/performance requirements.

A negative RFI means the animal ate less than you would have expected based on its weight and level of performance. A negative number is more desirable – more efficient – when evaluating RFI. RFI has been found to be a highly heritable trait (0.40) suggesting with measurement and

selection, a producer can make genetic advancement for the trait, resulting in cattle that are more efficient in producing a pound of gain with less feed.

Gain is all fine and good for the feedlot, but how does it affect my cow herd?

That is where RFI can have the most significant impact at the ranch. From a financial analysis, 75% of the cost of growing cattle is for feed costs.

Considering that 70-75% of that feed cost is just the cost of maintenance alone, there are some tremendous opportunities to lower your annual cow costs for feed and grass. Research has been documented that shows you can save up to $60 per cow per year on maintenance costs when selecting for negative RFI. Not only will you be saving money on feed costs at the ranch but those calves you are selling will be fed cheaper for the feedlot to feed and keep your calf buyer coming back year after year. It has been

I attribute that to the Salers influence and the added benefit of their efficiency. documented that there is a very high correlation (0.90) to RFI in bulls measured post weaning and how efficient their daughters will perform in the cow herd.

Are there any negatives to selecting for RFI? Just like any trait, producers should avoid single trait selection.

Selecting for negative RFI and ignoring production measures such as average daily gain would result in efficient cattle with no performance. This would be neither beneficial nor profitable for the ranch or the feedlot.

Observations from a User Duane Rugg and his father, Glen, have been buying top bulls from Midland for almost 2 decades. When Midland began testing for feed efficiency using the GrowSafe system with RFI, Duane thought it was worth adding to his selection criteria. A commercial operation in eastern Montana near Plevna, grazing grass is paramount to his cattle operation.

conformation ate extremely different levels of feed. One of the cows consumed 28 pounds of feed per head per day, while her counterpart ate 52 pounds of feed per day.

Which cow would you like to feed through the winter?

You can’t tell by looking at the cow, you cannot tell which one is more efficient simply because you are feeding the cows with a Total Mixed Ration Feed Processor and you ‘know how much they ate’ because there is a scale on the feed truck. Individually identified cattle with individually measured feed efficiency is where it is at if you want to make selection for efficiency traits like RFI and see genetic progress towards a more efficient cow herd. Afterall, that fat cow with the big belly, may just be the fat cow with the big belly that eats a lot. g

Recently recognized as the ASA Commercial Producer of the year in 2016, Rugg states, “It seems the younger cows are in better flesh on the same grass resource. All of these cows would be the result of bulls we purchased through Midland that have been efficiency tested and were negative RFI and met all of our other selection criteria. The cows are leaving the range in better shape with more grass remaining. The bull battery seems to be maintaining themselves in better body condition as well. We have the same grass resource that we have essentially always had, but the cattle seem to be better matched to the environment. We have been dry the last couple of years, but the cows and the range have handled it well. We have run as high as 98.5% breed up on the entire 400 head cow herd the last couple of years. I attribute that to the Salers influence and the added benefit of their efficiency.”

In university studies, they have identified amazing variations in cow efficiency. When measured on a GrowSafe bunk, 2 cows of almost the exact weight and very similar

American Salers Junior Association

Junior National Show

Wait, is it true? Is Junior National really only a few months away? You bet it is! Our junior members will be traveling south once again to Jonesboro, Arkansas to participate in the Junior National festivities. The 2018 American Salers Junior National will be held Sunday, July 8 through Friday, July 13 with the theme being a spin-off from the host state’s christened nickname as “the Natural State”. We will be celebrating “Salers, the Natural Choice” at the week-long Junior National event deep in the Bible Belt. This year brings many of the same contests and activities as previous years with a few changes and twists added.

We hope these modifications will provide a more enjoyable time for our junior members. The biggest change this year will be the further separation of age divisions. We will now have four age divisions: Peewee (7 and under), Juniors (8 to 12 year-olds), Intermediates (13 to 16 year-olds), and Seniors (17 to 21 year-olds). Due to the addition of another age division, the contests will have different rules and categories based accordingly to the age division. Please check the rules in the newsletter to understand the new divisions.
