Health: Health papers can be furnished for cattle to be shipped out of state. All bulls are tested negative for BVD and have passed a fertility test. Trich testing may be required for bulls going to some states (depending upon state regulations) Delivery: Bulls will be delivered free up to 250 miles before April 15th. Other arrangements can be made on an individual basis, please call prior to sale.

Possession: Bulls can be taken after purchase or we will care for the bulls until April 15th, free of charge.

Guarantee: All bulls have passed fertility tests. All bulls will be guaranteed sound for the first breeding season (until Sept 1, 2016); however, the seller will not be held responsible for mistreatment or mismanagement. If a suitable replacement is available he will be furnished—OR— a credit toward a purchase in next years sale if a suitable replacement is not available.

WELCOME! We would like to welcome you to the annual Axtell Cattle Company bull and female sale.

We were blessed with large rain totals the first half of 2015. The rains gave us plenty of extra grass in the fall and we are still running out with minimal feed as we write this. The grass didn’t have the potency of a normal year due to the rains. Our calves, like many others in the area, were off some in weight at weaning.

The bulls have grown well on test and have not had a lot of cold, wet weather, which has helped them gain well. We are happy with the way the bulls have turned out this year.

They are a uniform set from top to bottom and are deep in quality. The heifers in the sale this year are our best set to date. We are offering heifers from proven cow families and some of the top heifers from our replacement pen.

Legend was the high selling bull at the Choat/Arrowsmith sale in 2013. His calves are typically cherry red, easy calving, have good growth and are very deep bodied. His first daughters will calve soon. They look like they will make excellent cows.

Clifftop A073 was the High Selling Bull at the 2014 Beckton Red Angus sale.

Lot 4 did not get assigned a contemporary group and therefore did not get a WW ratio. Our calculations show he should have had a 111 ratio. This would have increased his EPD’s for Growth. Numbers or not, he is a smooth shouldered, excellent bull that does a lot right. His dam is a top cow for us and has produced numerous high selling bulls. Keep the daughters!

This bull may be the heaviest muscled calving ease bull of the day. He has a great lower quarter, a good wide top and is smooth shouldered. He stacks some top cows on his dam’s side too. He is in the top 3% of the breed for Calving Ease Direct, you don’t find many that can do that with this much muscle. This bull had a very good rib eye area for his size.

This bull is one of my favorites. He’s probably not the best at any one thing, but he’s pretty hard to fault in any area. The Dominator cattle just work and he should be no exception. His dam is a good young cow and his 11 year old grand dam is still in the herd doing a good job as well. He should be a combination bull. Calving ease, decent growth and excellent daughters.

I noticed 5124 on pasture last summer. He was one of the youngest bulls, but very fancy, very thick and was growing like a weed. He is not a tall bull, but he’s packed with muscle and depth of body. This bull is a heifer bull that is narrow shouldered and should be very easy calving. His maternal brother was purchased by Shuman Red Angus in California in last year’s sale.

5701 is a calving ease bull with a nice look. He didn’t perform quite as much as usual for his dam, but he should make a good heifer bull that is made stout. He is a bull with a good butt on him. He comes from our Buf Crk Anne cow family that is known for being easy fleshing and very productive.

Red Angus Heifers We will be bringing the heifers into the ring in groups of two.

You will have the option of purchasing one heifer or both, your choice. The heifers in the offering are right out of the replacement pen including a few from the very top. These heifers are our best set that we’ve sold to date. They are not big, fat heifers. They are raised right along with our other heifers and should mature into 1,000-1,100 lb. bred heifers. They will grow well once they hit green grass. We feel that over feeding young heifers is detrimental to their potential milking ability and structure. This heifer is double bred Syringa and Cody. Her cow family is one of our best. She should make a nice cow.

Our Program We purchased our first Registered Red Angus cow in 1993 and started in the Red Angus business in 1997. We started small with purchases from well known herds and over the years we’ve been able to increase our herd through additional purchases at Boot Jack, Milk Creek Reds, Beckton and others. All of the cattle we have bought in the last five years have went back to a base of Boot Jack, Beckton, Buffalo Creek and Beeby genetics. We have used A.I.; however, our bread and butter has been buying the best bulls we can find and using them in natural service. We are also using more home raised sires in our program. We feel that our herd bulls are as good or better than most A.I. bulls in the industry. Using our home raised bulls is something that has really helped us improve our cow herd. We take a lot of pride in udder quality and mothering ability and knowing the dam of our herd sire is important to us so that we don’t bring in any unwanted traits through the cow side.

Our program is focused on convenience traits. We strive for a cow herd that has sound feet, excellent udders and good fleshing ability. We live in short grass country where large pampered cattle will not work. We have found that moderate framed, easy doing cattle are the way to go here. Excessive growth EPD cattle are typically gone very quickly due to our limited feed resources. We breed for the middle and feel that if our EPD’s indicate that we are near the breed average in most traits, then we are doing something right. You will not see many sires used here that are trait leaders at any one trait, yet they will be very competitive at most traits. You will notice a strong Boot Jack influence in our herd. We really like the maternal side of the Boot Jack cattle and feel that the infusion of Beckton genetics have complimented them well.

Our Black Angus herd was started in 2003. Through aggressive culling, we now have a very sound, functional Angus herd. We used a Sinclair Timeless son this year. He is from a herd that has many of the same focuses as we do. Cattle that will go out and do what cattle are supposed to do with minimal inputs. Our Angus cattle are outcross genetics to most herds. It seems that most herds use the same bulls, ours are different, so if you need some new genetics, they should fit the bill.

The dam’s and most of the sires of these bulls are available to be seen at any time. Calving ease is also a focus of our program. We have had very few calving problems in our herd.

We picked this bull from Koenig Ranch from Winnett, MT. The Koenig’s run their cattle with very little input and we liked what we saw from their Bulls Kanyon and Kanyon 6403. This bull is triple bred to Kanyon and it will be a complete outcross to all of our current genetics.

Right Kind 86A was the third high selling bull at the 2015 Calvo bull sale at $14,500. We felt he was one of the heaviest muscled, moderate framed bull at the sale. I toured Calvo’s twice, once in September 2014 and once in February 2015.

I felt this was my favorite bull there on both occasions. He is a 84S son out of a great cow in 6X. She is out of one of the top Beeby cows and an out cross Scottish bull in Excalibur. His EPD’s should increase, bulls with old bloodlines tend to start low. We feel he is a great addition to our herd.
