Nominee for the 2015 Nebraska Angus Producer of the Year

Purpose of the NAPOTY
The purpose of this award is to select the Nebraska Angus Association member who has contributed the most to the advancement of the Angus business & their community; to recognize that member for their efforts & work expended in the interest of the Angus breed; to demonstrate to the public the place of the member in their community; & to call attention to the qualifications of these members for positions of leadership in the breed and its organizations. It is not a requirement that nominees must have served as State Association President but the nominee must be a current member of the Nebraska Angus Association. Each Angus producer in the state of Nebraska is invited to submit the name of one nominee, accompanied by a completed application form and supporting information. The NAPOTY will be selected by an anonymous selection committee comprised of current Nebraska Angus Association members, one from each district of the State Association. The previous year NAPOTY winner will serve as chair of the selection committee.
Suggested standards for the nominations may be based on the following guidelines: 1. Angus Spirit – (25%) high principles of integrity, adherence to the “Golden Rule”, good ethics among other breeders and the pubic 2. Civic Activity – (15%) local, state, national level participation in civic service clubs, charitable activities, political work, fraternal & religiou groups 3. Business Accomplishments – (20%) recognize good business conduct, service to buyers & sellers of Angus animals, advertising programs used & creative marketing 4. Local Area Activity – (15%) board offices & committee work, special assignments, educational work 5. State Association Activity – (20%) offices held & committee work, attendance & exhibiting at the State shows, director meetings & shows attended 6. National Association Acitivity (5%) national offices held, committee work, attendance at the Annual meeting, regional shows, etc.

As he grew, so did his herd in numbers and he also joined FFA and the Nebraska and National Junior Angus Associations. Craig was involved in many aspects of FFA receiving the State Degree award. He participated in many shows and contests in 4-H and the Nebraska and National Junior Angus Associations including cook-off, judging and showmanship placing in the top 15 at Nationals. Craig’s livestock judging career started at a very young age and continued with competing at Nationals in 4-H and also on the Collegiate level. He continued his passion for judging by coaching numerous county 4-H teams taking four of them to national competition. While Craig made the decision to further his education with eight years of college, the decision to slow down on the growing cattle herd was necessary. He sold most of his cows to help pay his tuition while he attended school earning his Animal Science Degree & Veterinary medicine degree. During his senior year of vet school Craig purchased Cole Creek Juanadalere 167U and she became the

foundation of his current cow herd. Craig began utilizing embryo transfer in 1992 which has allowed him to build a small herd of outstanding females.
His hard work in building his cowherd has reaped many benefits as has exhibited and sold champion and high selling females at the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic in the past. Craig has added VAR Beauty 7211, EF Forever Lady 026 and most recently SAV Emblynette 3611 to his donor line up. He continues his quest for high quality cattle with the performance, phenotype and pedigree that he desires. Craig and his wife, Laurie and their three daughters reside in North Platte while most of his cows are run with his parents’ herd on their ranch near Ravenna. The show cattle and donor cows are housed at his home place 12 miles southwest of North Platte. Craig and Laurie’s girls, Aliesha, Emily and Kacey have their own show careers and all them own some cows of their own. Recent show highlights for the girls include 2013 Grand Champion steer at the Jr. National Show and 2013 Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic Grand Champion Angus Female/Supreme Champion Female; the 2014 Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic Grand Champion Angus Bull/Supreme Champion Bull; and the 2014 Champion Angus Steer/British Breed Champion at the Nebraska State Fair.
Craig believes in giving back to those groups that have made a difference in his life. He was been very involved in the Nebraska Angus Association, and followed in his father’s footsteps by serving a total of seven years on the board, first as director then moving into the officer roles, serving the Association as President in 2008. He and Laurie served as Advisors to the Nebraska Junior Ass’n from 2012-2014.
Craig has served as a mentor and role model to many young Angus breeders including his three daughters sharing his passion for the breed and adult and junior associations. Even though Craig has had some adversity to overcome these past two years, it has not stopped him in continuing to actively promote Angus cattle. all Ranch is located in Keya Paha and Rock counties in north central Nebraska, straddling the scenic Niobrara River. With a mix of sandhills and hard grass hills the operation runs registered Black Angus cow/calf pairs, yearlings and sells two year old Angus bulls at their annual production sale. Ed and Carolyn’s maternal great grandfather and uncle purchased the original land 13 miles northeast of Bassett in Keya Paha in February of 1901. Their grandparents Bert & Minnie Genung managed the ranch from December of 1901 until Lou and Louise Genung Hall came in 1937 to raise their family and manage the ranch. Ed and Carolyn Hall were given a fatherly push into the registered Angus business when he convinced them to purchase 20 Bardoliermere, Blackcap and Eileenmere cows at a dispersion sale in 1960. By 1965 they were selling bulls via private treaty. Ed and his wife, Betty, assumed management in 1966. Here they raised Les, Kyla and Cody and all continued in the Angus tradition. As Angus producers, the family has served the Association in several capacities through the years. Ed was a Nebraska Angus Board President. All three of the Hall children were active in the Junior Angus Association showing cattle and serving as officers. Kyla Front Row: Ed Hall and Carolyn Hall. was a member of the National Back Row: Les and Rachel Hall, Kyla and Pete Olsen Junior Angus board and Les has been a past director for the state association. Replacements were home-raised until the early 1970’s when some Emulous-bred cattle were introduced. Breeding in the 1980’s saw use of Lone Star and Paragon. The family had their first production sale in 1981 and will hold their 34th Annual Bull Sale in March 2015. Les, his wife, Rachel and their son Craig, returned to the ranch in 1992. Demand for Angus females and Les’ return prompted the use of artificial insemination, which is a driving force in this family owned operation. • 77 •

oy & Norma Jean Glause's Lazy Black Diamond Ranch traces back to 1951 when Loy began with his father and brothers. Loy's father, Philip William Glause, & sons began purchasing registered Angus cattle in 1951 and operated as the Black Diamond Ranch near Worms, NE. Black Diamond Ranch was officially registered with the American Angus Association on March 16, 1956. Not more than a year later, Loy & Norma Jean (Jeanie) Glause were married on March 2, 1957. The young couple lived on a farm southwest of Worms where they began their family while farming and raising Angus cattle with Loy's father and brothers. In 1962, Loy & Jeanie moved to a farm 2 miles southeast of Palmer along Hwy 92 - the current operating location of Lazy Black Diamond Ranch. Over the next decade, they expanded their cow herd as well as their family. With the potential of their children showing registered cattle and the need for membership with the association, Loy & Jeanie decided to continue their own operation under a separate name. So, on April 4th, 1973, Loy & Jeanie officially registered their Angus ranch with the American Angus Association calling it "Lazy Black Diamond Ranch". Lazy Black Diamond Ranch sold private treaty for several years, then from the late 70's to the mid 80's, they held a joint annual production sale at the "3rd City" sale barn in Grand Island along with Loy's brother Paul. When Paul dispersed his herd in 1985, Loy returned to private treaty sales to market his breeding stock. At the same time, son Kevin became more involved by expanding his cow numbers in the herd. Son Clayton began adding some purchases in the mid 90's, & son Brian made his 1st purchases in 2003 to add to the herd. In the summer of 2009, when Loy learned that he had kidney cancer, he & Jeanie decided to sell their share of the cows to son's Kevin & Galen. Galen's son Morgan also purchased several of their heifers. Loy passed away the following spring on April 12, 2010. Loy loved working on the farm where he and Jeanie ran their cow herd and row cropped about 250 acres of corn. They also operated a roadside vegetable stand from 1964-1990, which was an integral part of helping raise their 13 children (6 girls & 7 Seated: Sydney Glause, Dorothea Glause, Norma Jean Glause, boys). various vegetables were a staple at the Glause family's crowded dinner table. Today, Jeanie and daughter Elaine continue to live on the farm and still serve as helping hands when needed. Son Kevin manages the cow herd and farming operation along with help from son's Galen, Brian, Clayton, and grandson Morgan. The herd consists of about 300 cows descending from herd sires purchased and raised. Most of their stock is marketed at the farm by private treaty sales where they sell about 130 bulls and 90 heifers each year. They have also entered bulls to the Nebraska Bull Test and the Cattlemen's Classic in Kearney. Kevin is an active board member of the Nebraska Bull Test, and Clayton served on the Nebraska Angus Association Board as Northeast Director, Vice President, and President. Loy's passion for Angus cattle was evident in that he always enjoyed visiting with his Angus customers, fellow breeders, and enthusiasts while promoting the breed. He & Jeanie also enjoyed traveling to a number of sales with family and friends both in and out of state. They were always prospecting for their next herd sire and given plenty of opinions from their boys. The gift of Agriculture and Angus cattle have been a great blessing to the Glause family. It has been the platform by which Loy & Jeanie raised their family and taught them the values of hard work & responsibility. Loy's love for living the farm/ranch life, his enthusiasm & interest in breeding Angus genetics, and raising a family of 13 with Jeanie was the highlight of his life.
