Fellow Cattlemen, Thank you for taking the time to consider the offering of our second annual “Proven Performance, Predictable Genetics” sale.

We feel this is the strongest set of bulls and females that we have ever assembled and will cover a balance of traits extremely well. As you look through the catalog, we feel the actual performance numbers will speak for themselves. We weaned the heaviest set of spring bulls ever, and did so in the hottest and driest summer on record, with no creep or supplementation.

So, what you will see is the remarkable, blue collar job the mother’s of these bulls did and bred back in a 60 day breeding season. Environmental pressures, like these cows have endured in the last year, separate the genetics that will do the job and those that won’t. We passionately feel that the genetic move towards a moderate frame, easy keeping, maternally efficient beef machine has paid dividends, for not only our operation, but you, our customers, as well.

Looking over the catalog, there is a wider diversity in sire groups. The Kaper 4508’s are a new addition. They will bring an increased level of calving ease and not give up on the weaning performance. The Prestige 8u’s; what can be said? This sire group dominated the attention of the 2011 sale and were the most sought after genetics. The Duty 7155’s and 8582’s combine an unprecedented balance of calving ease, growth, and carcass genetics.

We are extremely excited for you to take time to be with us, see the cattle, and discuss how these genetics can fit into your programs. We will be selling in the “Cowboy Auction” format again. Many in attendance and on the phone were extremely pleased with the transparency and straight-forwardness of this style of sale. Semen and Breeding Soundness Exams: All of the older bulls will be semen checked and Breeding Soundness Exam performed by sale day. The Spring yearlings will be checked by delivery date provided they are at least 12 months old.

Delivery: All bulls picked up on sale day will receive a $50/hd discount. Bulls will be kept at the farm free until April 1, 2012.

Cowboy Auction Procedure The bid-off will start at 1:00 PM CST, March 3. Bulls will have a starting bid of $2,000 and heifers will begin at $1,200.

At the time of the bid-off, each individual lot will be announced and all who wish to bid on that lot will be asked to raise their bidder number. Each bidder will be “in” until he chooses to step out and withdraw. Each $100 increment will be announced, and the bidders will be given time to consider whether they are “in” or “out,” before the next increment is announced. When only one bidder remains, they will have “won” that lot.

$Value Definitions $CEZ - ($ Calving Ease) This index assumes a bull will only by mated to heifers, not cows. The potential profitability of the sire is measured by the incidence of live calves at birth. Moderate mature size is also emphasized in the index, but performance is not a priority. This index is also a good measure of Shorthorn females’ ability to produce calving ease sires. Overemphasis of $CEZ may cause unwanted depression of weaning and yearling performance. $F - ($ Feedlot) Similar to a Terminal Sire scenario, $Feedlot places strong emphasis on growth and carcass traits. This multi-trait index assumes the sire will be mated to a mix of heifers and cows and attempts to measure profitability when progeny are sold on the fed market. On the female side, mature size should be monitored closely when selecting over $F. Over-selection may cause detrimental harm to longevity, reproductive efficiency, and fleshing ability. $BMI - ($ British Maternal Index) As the name implies, this multi-trait selection index attempts to measure a bull’s potential profitability when complimenting the British cow base (Angus, Red Angus, Hereford, etc.) Shorthorn females can likewise be gauged at adding value to British or British-composite bulls of other breeds. A balance of growth and carcass traits is desired with a strong maternal component aimed at optimum reproductive efficiency and cow longevity.

His mother, Duchess 7003 will receive the Shorthorn breeds most prestigious award, Pacer Performance Dam, bestowed to only those cows achieving excellence in performance and reproductive efficiency. He may get a little lost in the WW ratio column, but put his weaning weight with the fact his mother only weighs 1048 lbs and that’s 61% of her body weight. Pretty hard to ask her to do much more!
