here has the year gone? It seems like just last week it was January and I was packing to head to Denver for the National Western Stock show. Time moves quickly now days, even when you are not looking. Here we are in August, making final preparations for all of our fall activities.

Please take a moment and add one of our September events to your calendar, to enjoy the sights of the Angus breed in Nebraska. September 1st will find us at the Nebraska State Fair Open Angus Show. Last time I checked we had over 100 of cattle entered for the show. On September 1315th we have several of our Association members under the Big Top at Husker Harvest Days. Our tent will be in our traditional location in Lot 1058, on the north side of the grounds. Our Annual Angus Tour wraps up this months events on September 22nd – 24th. The tour will be held in Southwest Nebraska. Check out the tour ad and all of our Association members’ stories in this issue.

Also in this issue are the highlights of the Nebraska Junior Pre-view Show held in June. Check out the results on pages 7-8. They brought their best to the show that weekend. Congratulations to all the juniors on a great show.

Congratulations also go out to our new Angus Queen Cheyann Lovett of Bladen. She is the daughter of Jeff and Sandy Lovett who own Hidden Valley Angus. A great big thank you goes out to Katie Nelson for her work as our outgoing Angus Queen. Thanks to all of our young people for their interest and dedication to our breed.

Dear Angus Friends,

WOW!!

Where

has the summer gone? I know here it reminded us it was summer with 3 weeks of very hot and humid conditions. I hope everyone has had a good one as it is getting close to fall. I always look forward to fall as the spring calves are getting weaned it’s exciting to see their progress. Most of Nebraska had bountiful rains in the spring that made for good grass in the pastures. We have been fortunate in Nebraska compared to our neighboring states to the south.

This time of the year is exciting for the association with the State Fair, Husker Harvest Days and the State tour. The State Fair was well attended in 2010 and hopefully will be again this year. In visiting with members and friends, the move to Grand Island has been good with many excited to go back. This year the Association will be sponsoring an Exhibitor Social.

We hope to get ideas from exhibitors on how we can better benefit our exhibitors along with just visiting. Long time association member, Lowell Minert, who is on the State Fair Board, will be in attendance to answer questions regarding the fair. Husker Harvest Days is a great way to advertise your Angus operation. In visiting with Suzy there were still some pens available. Plans for the Angus tour are well underway.

I hope to see many of you there as it looks to be a great tour of Southwest Nebraska.

In November the American Angus Association holds its annual meeting in Louisville, Kentucky. Arlen Sawyer will be up for re-election. Arlen has represented Nebraska well, while being on the board and I encourage all the Nebraska delegates and alternates to attend the annual meeting to get Arlen re-elected. If any of the elected delegates are unable to attend let Suzy know as we want to have a full delegation in Louisville.

The annual association meeting and banquet will again be held in Kearney. There we will be announcing the Producer of the Year and Pioneer Award winners, along with having the Juniors semen auction.

The livestock industry is still going strong even with all the turmoil in the stock market.

Angus genetics are still in strong demand and will continue to be, especially here in Nebraska where we know GOOD BEEF and how to raise it.

I hope to visit with many of you at our upcoming events.

As always if you having any questions, concerns or ideas regarding the association feel free to contact myself, Suzy or any of the board members.

Dear Angus Friends,

I

t looks like all Nebraska farmers and ranchers should be enjoying a good summer.

The moisture situation has been a gift compared to what our southern beef producing states are enduring. Even though its been little tougher getting hay up and a few things, we still have a lot for which we should be grateful.

Our June board meeting was held at the Certified Angus Beef headquarters in Wooster, Ohio and we continued to discuss and move forward with our long-range planning. The online input received from members was documented and considered seriously throughout our meeting, so for those of you that completed the survey thank-you very much!

I had the pleasure of attending the National Junior Angus Show in Pennsylvania in July. I want to congratulate our Nebraska juniors and their parents for a tremendous representation of Nebraska Angus. There is never a question in my mind that whatever support needs to be given to the junior association is well worth the invest-

ment to continually keep the program moving forward.

I can't stress enought that the input that the board receives from members is always given separate and serious consideration. If anyone ever has a suggestion concerning any of the activities or programs of the American Angus Association, please convey those thoughts to me or one of the association staff members.

Becky and I are looking forward to attending the Angus show at the Nebraska State Fair and look forward to visiting with everyone. Good luck with fall weaning and harvest!

y name is Melissa Keyes. I am from Springfield, Nebraska and when I wake up in the morning, I want to help feed the world and be an advocate for agriculture! I do this by raising Angus cattle, corn, soybeans, and alfalfa on my family founded and operated sixth generation farm. I participate in several agricultural related organizations such as the Nebraska Agricultural Youth Council and currently serve as the President of the Nebraska Junior Angus Association. I also keep a personal blog that educates others about the importance of agriculture. I attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and am working towards a degree in Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication with a minor in Animal Science.

This past June, my family and I had the opportunity to work with the Schafer family and host the 2011 Nebraska Junior Angus State Show in my hometown of Springfield. The show was a success and all of the juniors had a great time. We had many sponsors that helped to make the show happen and we are so grateful for the generosity of those sponsors!

As many of you know, we had a large group of juniors attend the National Junior Angus Show in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in July. There was much success and a lot of fun had by all that made the trek back east. We are looking forward to sending an even larger group to Louisville, Kentucky next year in July 2012.

We are going to be holding a meeting at State Fair in Grand Island for all of the juniors and anybody else who would like to join our association! It will be held on Saturday, September 4th after the shows are over. The time and location have yet to be determined but all junior members will be notified as soon as that is set in stone!

Tour Editorial Nebraska Angus Tour Southwest Nebraska is Home To 2011 Nebraska Angus Tour Imperial, Nebraska is the headquarters of the 2011 Nebraska Angus Tour. Events will kick off the evening of September 22nd at 7:00 pm with Bear Mountain Angus hosting the evening meal at their ranch six miles West of Palisade. Chrisman Family Cattle of Wauneta will also have their cattle on display.

On Friday morning, the tour will leave the parking lot of the Imperial Inn at Imperial prompltly at 7 am (MT). From Imperial, the tour group will head Southwest to Windmill Angus Ranch at Haigler for a breakfast stop hosted by the Peterson family. Once finished at Windmill Ranch the tour will head Northeast for a stop at Mill Bar Angus Ranch. Mick and Marlene Cox along with their will welcome the tour group to Friday’s lunch stop. Next up on the itinerary is a stop at Nebraska Bulls Service which is owned by Brian and Donnetta Schafer. The group will then head South of McCook for a visit at Ely Angus hosted by the Roger and Jim Ely families. The final stop of the first day will be an evening meal at Pettera Angus just Northeast of McCook. Also having cattle displayed at this stop will be the Johnson Family of Frontier Angus Farms at Stockville and Triple C Cattle Co./Bill and Nikki Cappel of McCook. The tour group will return to their Imperial Inn headquarters at Imperial.

Saturday, September 24th the tour will drive North to Grant and a stop at the Perkins County Fairgrounds. This breakfast stop will be hosted by Huckfeldt-Turner Angus, 9 R Land & Cattle/Chris Fryzek and Vision Angus owned

head North to I-80, then turn West towards Chappell. The second stop on Saturday will be at Boss Premier Cattle hosted by Cordell & Barb Boss, their son Kyle and the rest of their family. From the Boss operation located between Chappell and Julesburg, CO the tour group will head North for T 4 Livestock located between Chappell and Oshkosh. Steve and Jeanette Dean are excited to serve as the host to the group at their operation. Sandpoint Cattle Co., owned by John and Laurie Widdowson will be the hosts for the grand finale’ of this year’s tour at their ranch just east of Logepole.

The Widdowsons will treat the tour to a hearty lunchstop as they wrap up this year’s tour. The tour bus will return to the Imperial Inn at Imperial, following the stop at Sandpoint.

Nebraska Angus Tour Begins Thursday September 22, 2011 STOP 1

Bear Mountain Angus began as a 4-H project for Brian and Scott Stoller in 1985 in the foothills of California, in the small town of Angels Camp with the purchase of two Angus heifers from Thomas Angus Ranch in Baker, Oregon. Throughout the next 10 years, Brian and Scott showed and raised Angus cattle. By 1995, the ranch was up to 100 mother cows.

When Brian went to college at Fresno State, the herd was dispersed. In 2001, Gary, Davy, and Brian decided to relocate Bear Mountain Angus to Melba, Idaho with the purchase of Foote Acres Angus ranch and herd. The herd grew to approximately 500 Angus mother cows. In April of 2008, Bear Mountain Angus had a complete and total opportunity sale to downsize the herd for their next move. As of May, 2008 Bear Mountain Angus calls Palisade, Nebraska home.

Currently we are running approximately 280 Angus and 20 Charolais mother cows. About 2/3 of the cows calve in the spring and 1/3 calve in the fall. Eighty of these cows are used as recips of which all but 8 are registered. We use embryo transfer and artificial insemination to perpetuate our very best genetics.

Our two main herd sires who have been used nationwide are Bear Mtn Freight Train 350L, a Connealy Freightliner son, and Bear Mtn Owyhee 5012 (pronounced o-y-he), a Rtio 1I2 son. We are currently using 3

sons of Owyhee, including Bear Mtn Renegade 9045, Bear Mtn Octane 7122 and Bear Mtn King Owyhee 9047.

Other herd sires include Connealy Dependable 7446, a Pendelton son, Connealy Toby 865B(CAF), a Tobin son who is a full brother to Sullivan, Whitestone Contendor who is a Final Answer son and Sand Dune Complete, who is a Complete son. Other AI sires we are currently using are Vin-Mar O’Reilly Factor, VAR Rocky 80029, Pine Ridge Hammer, Woodhill Mainline, GDAR Game Day, and Connealy Timeline.

Our slogan is “Focusing on Quality with Performance”. We strive to produce cattle that have good performance on the scale and on the rail and are phenotypically pleasing to the eye. We want our cattle to be sound structured, good footed, easy fleshing, good uddered and good mothers. We don’t chase fads or breed extremes; we just breed for cattle that we think will work for both us and our customers.

We have 2 production sales each year. Our bull sale is held the last Thursday in February where we sell approximately 130 Angus and Charolais bulls. The bull sale consists of two year olds, coming twos (18 month old fall borns) and yearlings. The bulls are developed on an all forage diet.

Instead of grain, the bulls are fed a mix of soybean hulls, alfalfa, cane hay, mix 30, distillers, and a mineral designed specifically for the ration. The roughage diet allows the cattle to grow and gain well, but is designed to be less harsh than grain so they transition to pasture easier, have fewer feet and leg problems, and better reproductive performance.

Our fall female production sale is the third Saturday in November. We offer donors & donor prospects, show heifers which are halter broke and ready to go to a show, bred heifers, and proven cows. The show heifers we sell are our best heifer calves from that year. These heifers should not only be competitive in the show ring but also make great cows. We do this to help out the next generation of Angus breeders. Brian got the Angus bug by showing heifers and having many influential people help him throughout showing. We hope to give back to the next generation by doing

the same.

Gary and Davy Stoller (Brian’s parents) have turned everything over to Brian and his wife Tiffany since moving to Nebraska. We have 2 daughters, Reagan Skow (11 years old) and Mckinley Stoller (9 months old).

Along with breeding Angus and Charolais cattle we are certified ultrasound technicians and Tiffany teaches online animal science classes at MidPlains Community College and Treasure Valley Community College. Brian also works a few sales for LiveAuctions.TV. Gary and Davy say they are retired however Gary still helps out when he can. This family cattle operation consists of two separate herds. Travis and Kelli manage the fall calving herd near Wauneta, while Travis’ parents Rick and Gayle and his brother Josh take care of a spring calving herd near McCool Junction. Currently the operation consists of about 120 cows, of which approximately 75% would be registered Angus.

The family has run commercial cattle since Rick and Gayle were married in 1978, but only recently have they began the conversion to registered Angus. In 2004 they partnered with Broken Bar M Angus, Jeremy and Gail Martin of Hershey to purchase CM Dixie Erica 796C. An 11 year old cow at the time, she was considered by many to be one of the best Traveler daughters ever produced. She has provided a solid foundation of daughters and herd bulls to move their breeding program forward.

From the beginning their focus has been to produce maternally efficient momma cows.

With the high price of feed, fuel, labor and replacements it is clear to them that maternally efficient is defined as a cow that can utilize low quality forage, raise a heavy and healthy calf and do it on her own well into her teens. Their genetic base is mostly Emulation bloodlines acquired from Sinclair Cattle Co. and developed in a real world environment at the old N Bar Ranch in Grass Range, MT. To this base they are adding some Rito and Traveler blood and are currently sampling genetics from Cole Creek Angus in Joliet, MT. Today, herd bulls in use include C F C Genesis 8X1, C F C First Step 9V1, Sinclair Rito Promise 0R12 and Cole Creek Full Bore 730. All of these bulls have dams or grand dams with strong production into their teens or even 20 years old in the case of the Promise bull.

Currently they market a few bulls private treaty with Broken Bar M Angus each spring. Semen, embryos and females are also available for sale at most times. Future goals of the operation are to expand their numbers and move towards closing the herd and using mostly their own home raised herd sires with limited outside genetics unless they come from the same proven base.

Rick and Gayle grow corn and soybeans; Josh works in agronomy sales for United Farmers Coop in York; Travis and Kelli own and operate Chrisman Cattle Services which markets ABS semen and A.I.’s over 10,000 head per year in addition to marketing 2500 calves for customers; Kelli does advertising design, web design and bull sale catalogs for a growing client list in addition to being a professional jumper horse trainer. With their busy schedules the cattle must work for them or find a new home.

They have not changed how they manage their cattle since adding the registered Angus. It is important that the cattle are managed in as tough, or tougher than commercial operations in the area. While most of the industry is focused on measuring and selecting on high concentrate diets, the Chrisman’s prefer selection decisions to be made when the cattle are on lower quality forage and forced to work for a living. WINDMILL ANGUS Celebrates 60+ Years of Angus Cattle!

Windmill Angus Ranch was purchased in 1959 by Rich and Joan Peterson. In the late 1800’s it was known as the Cottonwood Ranch and had a reputation as one of the premier Registered Hereford ranches in the tri-state area. Rich, Joan and Rich’s father George Peterson had been raising Registered Angus in the Chappell, Nebraska area before purchasing the Cottonwood Ranch. The named the ranch Windmill Ranch after the design of their brand. The brand is well known around the country now as Registered Stock has been sold to almost every state.

Rich and Joan had four children; Eric, Ellen, George and Alex. Eric was lost in a farm accident in 1976. Ellen and her husband Gene and their two boys Jake and Ethan own a farm/ranch in the panhandle of Nebraska. George and his wife Carol and their two children Meg and Mark own a ranch that borders Windmill Ranch.

Other people essential to the operation include Luis Cardoza – herd management and Abby Vermillion – Secretary.

Rich and Joan always paid close attention to carcass quality, conformity and performance. Showing steers in the Royal in Kansas City in the 60’s won them many awards. Rich and Joan liked big performance cattle and stayed away from the small framed cattle of the day. Bloodlines that are prominent today are: Oneill’s Lucky

They began production sales in Wray, CO around 1975 and in 1980 built a sale barn at the ranch. Thirtyseven annual production sales later, the tradition continues as their son Alex Peterson manages the operation today. The bull sale is the first Monday in February annually at the ranch and it is broadcast online. They average a female sale every third year and they also market animals by private treaty. Advertising methods include flyers, sale catalogs, direct mailings, email blasts, newspaper and magazine ads and radio coverage.

The Peterson family also showed breeding livestock, winning many state shows including the NILE and the Cow Palace in California. Some of their greatest sires include the famous ABS sire Hoff Triumph, Hoff Ultra and

B/R New Dimension 7127. Carcass quality has always been a goal at Windmill Ranch. Last year, a pen of Windmill raised steers won the coveted CAB 30-06 award. Their customers have gained from Rich and Joan’s persistence by topping sales with Windmill genetics. Repeat customers of around 95% in the production sales, proves their attention to detail works. Sixty years of raising great Angus cattle and making friends nationwide has been a great way to make a living. Although Rich passed away in 2000, Joan is an active partner in Windmill Ranch and continues to help with everyday decisions.

Currently Alex and Joan run 600 mother cows and about 50 commercial cows. Alex quips that the size of his operation is more fence than he can get around in a year. This ground is also home to corn, wheat and alfalfa crops. Their goal is reach 800 head of registered mother cows and continue tracking carcass data through their customers and their own livestock.

live in the Sandhills where Joseph is a Physical Education teacher and athletic coach at Sandhills Dunning Schools. They are looking forward to their first child in September. Molly is a first year student at Hastings College this fall, and youngest daughter Sarah is beginning her junior year at Hayes Center Schools. All have been fully involved over the years.

The operation is home to over 600 registered and commercial cows. In 1988 the focus changed from strictly commercial Angus to a purebred registered operation. The goal and focus for the program has always been on maternal first, - followed by performance testing and carcass evaluation.

The cowherd is summered on native grass, and grazes cornstalks in the winter period. The bulls were merchandised private treaty, through the Western NE Bull Test and Southwest NE Association Sale until 1999. In the year 2000 they held their inaugural Performance Tested - Carcass Evaluated Bull Sale which is always on the fourth Friday of January. The 2012 Bull Sale will be on January 27, 2012.

The bulls are all developed in large sandy pens on the ranch. The ration has always been a high protein ration of feedstuffs grown on the outfit consisting of alfalfa, grass hay, corn silage, corn, oats and liquid supplement.

Mill Bar Angus is truly a family operation. A large array of irrigated and dryland crops are produced here including corn, alfalfa, soybeans, wheat, oats and a wide variety of grazing crops. We purchase both steers and heifers from bull customers and they run out on cornstalks and other crops in the fall.

A total of 12 Bull Sales have been held, Mick and Marlene and their family is very appreciative of the support of our customers, if not for them our business would not be able to succeed and for that we say “Thank You”!

The dispositions of the cattle are good.

The Ely operation has been using EPD’s and AHIR since 1986 to keep thorough records on all cows and calves. Ultrasound and carcass is taken on bulls and heifers each spring.

All cows and calves are on a vaccination programs so very problems occur.

After calving, cows are turned out on pastures that are used only for that purpose so that cuts down on sickness.

Ely Angus markets around forty bulls each spring through the following sales: Nebraska Cattleman’s Classic, Southwest Nebraska Angus Association production sale and by private treaty. They certainly appreciate their loyal customers over the years.

PETTERA ANGUS Pettera Angus is located Northeast of McCook, NE in the beautiful Southwestern part of the state. Randy and Desree Pettera grew up around commercial cattle but never had the opportunity to become involved with 4-H. This is one opportunity they wanted to provide to their children.

In 1980 they purchased registered Angus heifers for their son’s first 4-H project.

Son Chad, and his wife Erin, live in Wichita Kansas with their children Clayton and Tyler. Chad is a Chief Financial Officer for the Workforce Alliance of South Central Kansas. Son Bryan lives in Lincoln, NE and works as a Lineman for T & H Powerline out of Dewey, OK. Chad and Bryan were involved in the 4-H program through high school.

Now, Randy & Desree’s grandsons have been able to spend time with them in the summer months, showing cattle in the 4-H program. In 2011, their youngest grandson participated for the first time as a “PeeWee” mem-

ber. They feel 4-H is a great way to build a child’s self-esteem and instill in them a sense of responsibility.

The Pettera’s registered herd progressed from that first 4-H project.

Utilizing the AHIR program through the American Angus Association they worked to improve the herd. Although they have contemplated becoming a strictly commercial cattle operation many times, their love for the breeding livestock business was strong. They are currently in their 31st year of the purebred business.

With the huge increases in feed costs, Randy and Desree have been traveling extensively to locate bloodlines that are easy-fleshing, a characteristic Angus cattle are well known for. They still have a few of the larger framed cattle available, but are getting more requests for the moderate framed, easy fleshing cattle. They feel that the chasing of certain carcass traits has resulted in less fleshing and higher finishing weights, with less fertility. Angus cattle have always been known for excellent carcass traits and they don’t carry this to extremes.

The Pettera’s have purchased a female from the famous Donna cow family from Montana. Her first calf, out of BC Emblazon, was born last fall and will be on display. The dam of this female has generated more than $140,000 in progeny sales. She descends from the second generation Pathfinder Dam Brooks Donna 321 who is the result of mating Pathfinder Sire DHD Traveler 6807 with the Pathfinder dam that has the distinction of being a full sister to the Pathfinder Sire AAR New Trend.

They feel this bloodline excels in fertility, longevity and function.

They will also have a Rito Revolve 0R5 cow that is a granddaughter of R R Rito 707 on display. R R Rito 707 was a cornerstone Pathfinder Sire, from Dale Davis’s herd in Montana, born 43 years ago. He remains the breed’s top proven performance sire for his generation and well beyond with a Weaning Weight EPD nearly 40 pounds greater than the estimated average of his birth year and Yearling Weight EPD nearly 70 pounds greater.

She was the Supreme Champion female of all breeds at the Lloydminister Stockade. This is one of Canada’s major shows in which she competed against 500 females to be crowned the over all Supreme female of all breeds. She was also the Supreme Champion Female of all breeds at the Prince Albert Gold show. As a yearling heifer she was the Reserve Champion female in London, Ontario and Reserve Champion at the Toronto Royal which is a very large Angus show attended by many people from the U.S. as well as Canada. She was one of the very …very few females to ever beat Soo Line Annie K 6271. They are not one to chase show titles, but this cow is tremendously thick with a perfect udder and a wonderful disposition.

The first cows were Eileenmere and Blackcap breeding. Some of the sires we have used are Investor, Pacesetter, Mr. Angus,and New Design.

More recent A-I sires we have used include, Frontier 095, Destroyer 093; Thunder; Safelead; T.C. Franklin 619; Image maker; and Fortune.

They are involved in Angus Production Testing, so have EPD's and data available. Through this program we have had several Pathfinder cows over the years.

Their son Paul does all the work of taking care of the cattle and does the A-I ing. he and his wife are in the process of purchsing our cattle, and Jim and Twila are semi-retired. It's hard to give it up after 58 years, so as long as they're able they will stay a little involved. The Angus business has been very good to Jim and Twila.

employee Jon Alexander. Other family members include: Matt, Todd & Cheryl Boss; Chris & Erin Dudden and their Grandchildren: Makenna, Madison & Trevor Boss & Cooper Dudden.

The Boss family farms 2,200 acres on which they raise corn, soybeans, alfalfa hay, grass hay, wheat and rye and of course the cow herd. The herd numbers over 100 registered females and 150 non – registered cows. The operation is located between Chappell, Nebraska and Julesburg, Colorado just off of Hwy 385. The business is in its 32nd year of operation.

The cow herd has utilized Ohlde bloodlines in the crossbred program from the beginning. Recently they have introduced DUFF Genetics, and have found their customers’ needs required the move to Purebred Angus cattle. With the Ohlde and Duff basis in the cowherd, the family felt that they needed to add some powerful outcross genetics, including numerous donor quality females and their new herd sire “PROWLER”. These herd additions will be on display at their stop on this year’s tour. The Boss family utilizes A.I., embryo transplant and natural service in their breeding program.

All five of the Boss children had the desire to show cattle and were successfully involved in raising and showing cattle on the county, state and national levels. They won the Ohio State Fair Jr Steer Show in 1995 with home raised cattle and won the North American Livestock Exposition in Louisville, KY, in 1988. The family moved from Ohio to Nebraska in 1997 and they continued their winning ways by showing successfully at Kearney at the Cattlemen’s Classic - having Supreme Champion (bull or female) Bull, in 1999. They also have been successful in the yards at the National Western Stock Show in Denver.

Since leaving the show ring, the operation has continued that success by focusing on producing functional, productive cattle with eye appeal; that are beneficial to their customers and the Angus breed. Current methods of marketing the cattle include private treaty sales and their online bull sale held in March. They have a goal of marketing their breeding stock in an 22 • Nebraska Angus News • August - September 2011

annual production sale.

In the short term there are dispersing their crossbred and A+ cattle, moving completely to a registered Angus operation. The Boss family is a family operation, dedicated to producing functional, all-around breeding stock that will work in all sectors of the industry. T 4 LIVESTOCK

T 4 Annual Ranch Tour

Steve and Jeanette Dean are the proprietors of T 4 Livestock, located between Chappell and Oshkosh, Nebraska. T 4 has been in existence since 1997. Their operation is home to 90 registered cows and 60 commercial females, they also run approximately, 80 head of outside/client cattle throughout the year, and in the spring, custom calve out heifers.

Steve’s cattle experience began 40 years ago on a registered Hereford operation. This business took him to New Mexico where he met Jeanette.

Thirty years ago they began working for a large yearling operation which is headquarted in Texas. They moved twice a year with the cattle from Texas, Wyoming, Nebraska, and New Mexico.

In 1995, they began working for the Carlson Ranch, operation at Lodgepole. The Carlson ranch ran 500 commercial Angus cows. The Deans used different Angus bloodlines on the herd. Utilizing information gathered from these matings, they began developing their registered Angus herd. The Deans moved to their present location in 2005 when the Carlson’s retired and sold their ranch.

The cows are run on 2,500 acres of pasture during the summer months and run on constalks in the winter.

Steve also operates T 4 Trucking, doing long distance, livestock Hauling. The Dean operation is multibreed, utilizing Simmental cattle as well as Angus. Angus bloodlines include New Design 1407, OCC Legend 6I6L, VDAR Legend 1281, Garden Prime Time and Sitz Alliance 6595, and other prominent bloodlines. Simmental bloodlines consist of SAND Ranch Hand, ACC1 Hustler, Dream On and Hooks Shear Force. Bulls are marketed in March at ther Annual Bull Sale held at the Ranch. Females are currently sold by private treaty and they also sell club calves every year.

The goals of their operation focus on raising balanced cattle that are moderate framed, loaded with muscle and possess strong maternal traits.

Two years ago they added the Simmental/Angus mix to their business after seeing how well these cattle perform in the feedlots. Like many producers their number one objective is to raise that one bull that would becom an industry changer. Steve and Jeanette, their family and friends welcome the Nebraska Angus Tour to their little piece of heaven.

Cattle Company, LLC in 1997 when they graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Their first cows were purchased from Vance and Connie Uden at TC Ranch. Initially, the business was located near Gibbon, Nebraska where they were raised on the family farm and ranch. Their operation grew to a point of needing to expand. The present location near Lodgepole was purchased in 2004.

Home to 1,800 cows, the operation is comprised of only registered females. The Widdowsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own around 22,000 acres which is comprised of 2,000 acres of farm ground which raises corn, alfalfa, wheat and feed.

The remaining 20,000 owned acres is grassland. They also lease 6,000 acres of pasture land.

Obviously, an operation of this scale must rely on loyal employees. In this case they are Mike Cavalli/Operation Manager, Clint Snell/Cow Herd, Rich Tagemeyer/Farming Operation and Ailene McAullife/Records and Technology.

The Sandpoint breeding program consists of two calving herds â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a spring herd with 60% of the herd calv-

ing during this period and the remainder 40% calving in the fall. Every cow has at least one opportunity to A.Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d. per breeding season and then turned out with herd sires. They also utilize an extensive Embryo Transfer (ET) program. Here they flush their donor cows and implant the embryos into their own registered recipient cows.

Their Arthur, Nebraska ranch is run as a â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weaned Calf ET Programâ&#x20AC;?. They also transfer other breederâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s embryos into their cows and provide them with a weaned calf the next fall.

The first week of March is the Annual Sandpoint Bull Sale. March 7, 2012 will be their 11th annual production sale. Approximately 180-200 bulls are marketing during the sale. They also sell another 200 bulls a year privately, for a total of 400 bulls sold annually. They also host an annual Female Sale known as the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Power of the Pointâ&#x20AC;? sale. Their 9th annual female sale will be on Monday, November 7, 2011. This year the female sale will be Mature Cow dispersal â&#x20AC;&#x201C; selling all of their 6, 7 and 8 year old cows.

This female sale will also have spring and fall calving pairs. Females are

also marketed private treaty throughout the year.

One of the main objectives that keep John and Laurie motivated is to produce elite Angus genetics that will help their commercial customers increase their profitability. They try to provide quality genetics in a volume with customer service that will exceed their customerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s expectations. They realize that there are many types and kinds of cattle, and they strive to have enough genetic difference for the various geographic and management practices that face todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cattle industry. The most important aim of Sandpoint Cattle Co. as an operation is the care and management of their land and cattle so they can pass it to the next generation in better shape than they received it.
