Welcome to our 5th Annual “Meat and Guts” Performance Genetics Sale here at the ranch in Gardnerville, Nevada.

We will continue to use the format of selling the bulls on video screen. This format has worked well for us the past few years. It is cleaner and less hassle behind behind the sale ring. We want the sale to have a comfortable feel to it.

We have enjoyed visiting with our friends and neighbors from across the western United States this past year, and the many favorable comments on the calves that were sired by our bulls. These calves continue to be born easy with a lot of grow, and they feed well in the feedlot. Our bulls go into many different environments— from California to eastern Oregon and northern Nevada. The bulls go out and work and come back in good shape after breeding season. We continue to focus on cattle that are moderate framed with good dispositions that feed well in the feedlot and have good carcass numbers; but most importantly, we want a cow that will stay in your program for years to come.

Our genetics have not changed a whole lot. We continue to purchase bulls from Jacobsen Ranches in Sun River, Montana, for our Salers herd.

Our Angus bulls and females come from the herds of Rancho Casino and Dal Porto Livestock. We purchased the high selling bull at the Dal Porto/ Rancho Casino sale last fall, a son of MCC Daybreak out of a Rito 6I6 dam. We think he will be an outstanding addition to our program. All of these programs are top notch and outstanding people to work with.

Again, our sale bulls are being developed at Snyder Livestock in Yerington, Nevada. Lucy does a great job of getting these bulls ready for the sale.

The bulls meet the breeding requirements of Randy Wallstrum, D.V.M. This year we have added the Igenity® test for our bulls. Among other traits, it measures tenderness, marbling, docility and hair coat for being homozygous black. See page 16 for an explanation of the Igenity test results.

We will also continue to ultrasound our bulls for ribeye and marbling. We try to provide as much information as possible to allow our customers the opportunity to make sound decisions on their purchases.

New to our sale this year is Joe Gellings, Sunken Canyon Ranch, Buhl, Idaho. Joe also has purchased genetics from Jacobsen Ranches in the past.

His breeding program and mine are very similar in bloodlines and demands on disposition and calving easy. Joe’s bulls should be a great addition to the sale. Joe is also a great person to work with. Visit with him on sale day.

Sale Terms & Conditions Bulls will sell under Suggested Terms and Conditions of their respective breed association—either the American Salers Association or the American Angus Association.

Terms of the sale are cash, cashier’s check or personal check, payable during or immediately following the sale. Bulls will not be released until after settlement has been made.

Herd Health All bulls will be accompanied by proper certification for immediate interstate shipment. Bulls are negative for BVD–PI and have been vaccinated for anaplasmosis. Herd veterinarian is Randy Wallstrum, D.V.M.

Breeding Guarantee Bulls will be scrotal measured and will have carcass ultrasound information.

Bulls will be semen checked with a passing grade and are guaranteed breeders. Guarantee is limited to purchase price. We reserve the right to have our veterinarian re-examine any bull examined by a purchaser’s vet and claimed to be a non-breeder. No guarantee is given that semen collected from a bull will freeze. All bulls sell with a one-year unconditional guarantee.

Trucking We will be glad to assist you in making the best possible trucking arrangements. We are offering free delivery to a central location up to 500 miles.

Volume Discount Persons buying four or more bulls will receive a $100 discount off the total purchase price.

Registration Certificates Bulls will be transferred through the respective breed association to the buyer at the seller’s expense. Each buyer must be sure to give the sale clerk the proper name and address for making transfers.

About EPDs The available Expected Progeny Difference (EPD) numbers are included in the catalog and were current as of 1/14/11, as reported by each individual’s breed association. EPD is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform in each of the traits listed, relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the breed database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Performance records allow you to compare individuals of the same herd; EPDs allow you to compare individuals within a breed. EPDs do not allow you to compare individuals of different breeds.

Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an “I”, and may or may not include the animal’s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE. Breed average for 2009-born Salers calves: CED +0.2, BW +1.8, WW +40, YW +76, MILK +20, MARB +.10, REA +.03 Breed average for non-parent Angus bulls: CED +5, BW +2.0, WW +46, YW +83, MILK +22, MARB +.41, REA +.19 Calving Ease Direct (CED) is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in firstcalf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.

Birth Weight (BW) (pounds) is based on the measured birth weight of progeny, adjusted for dam age. The lower the value the lighter the calf at birth and the lower the likelihood of a difficult birth. This is particularly important when selecting sires for use on heifers.

Weaning Weight (WW) (pounds) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 80 and 300 days of age. Values are adjusted to 205 days and for age of dam. This EPD is the best single estimate of an animal’s genetic merit for growth to early ages.

Yearling Weight (YW) (pounds) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 301 and 450 days of age, adjusted to 365 days and for age of dam. This EPD is the best single estimate of a sire’s genetic merit for yearling weight.

Milk (pounds) is an estimate of an animal’s milking ability. For sires, this EPD indicates the effect of the daughters’ milking ability, inherited from the sire, on the weaning and yearling weights of her calves.

Marbling EPD (Marb) is calculated from numeric scores assigned to each carcass quality grade division. Data is adjusted to a standard carcass weight of 750 lbs. Positive EPD values indicate greater numeric marbling scores at the same carcass weight.

Ribeye Area EPD (REA) (square inches) is calculated from live animal ultrasound measurements and carcass measurements of ribeye area taken between the 12th and 13th rib and adjusted to a 750 lb. carcass weight.

Ribeye area is closely associated with percent retail product when carcass weight is held constant. Sires with more positive REA EPDs are expected to produce better muscled and higher percentage yielding progeny at the same carcass weight than will sires with lower REA EPDs.

Twenty-five years ago, Ward Ranches purchased its first Salers bull at the Western Spotlight Salers Sale in Galt, California. We had an Angus-based commercial cow herd. The Salers were new to the industry at the time. We tried them because of the calving ease and the marbling quality.

We started with 25 to 30 virgin Angus heifers that we bred to this Salers bull, making the calves 50% Angus/50% Salers. The following fall when we calved these heifers, we were surprised at the calving ease and the vigor in these calves. We were immediately sold on the two breeds being compatible with each other. The Angus and Salers offered both the maternal and carcass qualities that we were interested in.

As we started to put together a purebred operation, we knew the qualities we had wanted in our commercial cattle operation, and we worked toward producing bulls that would work for the commercial cattleman. We have tried for generations now to build a cow herd that will produce bulls that pass on the traits that lead to profitability for you, the rancher. We want to create moderate-framed individuals that are easy fleshing and carry a lot of extra rib (i.e., guts). They need to have the ability to process the grass and convert it into pounds of flesh. Another goal was to produce cattle that will have optimal feed conversion in the feedlot.

Our philosophy is like that of a supermarket. We need to produce a quality product to put on the auction block for the you, the shopper. We know that the Angus breed is known as the “Business Breed” and that the Salers breed is known as the “Balanced Breed.” Research has shown that both breeds demonstrate the traits for calving ease, maternal ability, weight gain, feedlot performance and carcass merit. These two breeds, Angus and Salers, complement each other. We are offering you purebred Angus bulls, purebred Salers bulls and composite Angus/Salers bulls—whichever fits your individual program or preference.

Top 10 Reasons Why You Should Use Salers Genetics 10. If you’ve lost calving ease. The calving ease of Salers is not only documented by extensive research, it’s also the single biggest reason progressive cattle producers use Salers bulls on their cow herds. If you’re tired of pulling calves, tired of losing sleep, tired of paying for c-sections, then you need to take a serious look at the built-in advantages of Salers’ “sleep well” genetics.

A third-generation eastern Idaho potato farmer, I went to work right out of high school on the family farm. Cheryl and I married in 1975 and started in the cattle business by purchasing 125 Herefords. In addition to raising potatoes and cattle, we also grew grain and alfalfa and custom fed excess hay. Dean Shenton, whom I custom fed for, brought in some Salers cattle and I fell in love with them!

We purchased Salers bulls from Lacey Ranches to use on our commercial cattle, loved the results and went further, purchasing foundation females to start our registered herd. We never looked back, running as many as 175 mother cows and continually wanting to improve genetics. We’ve purchased bulls from what we feel have been some of the best programs in the Salers breed. As much as we enjoy the cattle, we have also enjoyed the people and fellow cattlemen we’ve met along the way.

Recently we purchased half interest in the 2009 National Champion Bull, H&S Tonka. Proudly so, we’ve now been in the Registered Salers business for more than 20 years. We consign annually to the Salers Supreme, Denver National and Idaho Salers sales as well as private treaty.

We have two daughters—Alicia, who has special needs, has always enjoyed being around the cattle, and Whitney showed Salers cattle while participating in 4-H for several years. Whitney and her husband now have two children, Hayden and Delainee. We’re looking forward to having our grandchildren show their first calf.

Having recently downsized our herd has allowed us to concentrate even more on quality rather than quantity. Carcass Quality The Igenity profile score for Tenderness score represents animals’ genetic potential for tenderness as measured by the Warner–Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF) test, with 10 being the most tender and 1 the least tender.

The Igenity profile scores for Quality Grade and Marbling reflect extremely powerful multiple marker analyses which are indicative of an animal’s potential for intramuscular fat deposition and Choice or better Quality Grade carcasses.

The Igenity profile score for Marbling Scores translate to the 100 to 999 scale, where 400 represents low Choice. Marbling score is particularly useful in deciding between animals with similar marbling EPDs or ultrasound data.

The Igenity profile for Quality Grade reflects the percent Choice or higher—so 64.4% more animals with an Igenity Quality Grade score of 10 will grade Choice or higher than animals with a score of 1.

Carcass Composition The Igenity profile scores for Yield Grade, Ribeye Area and Backfat Thickness are calculated using multiple DNA markers that reflect the animal’s genetic potential for these traits. For example, animals with an Igenity profile score of 10 for Ribeye Area will have a 2.56 inch larger ribeye than animals which score a 1. Ribeye Area is scored in square inches, Backfat in inches, and Yield Grade in Yield Grade scores (1-5). These Igenity results provide a more complete picture of the Carcass Composition potential for an animal.

Maternal and Reproductive Traits Reproduction is arguably the most economically important trait for cow/calf producers. Heifer Pregnancy Rate is a heifer’s chance at becoming pregnant over a normal breeding season, relative to other heifers.

Stayability is the chance a heifer will remain in the herd until at least six years old, relative to other animals.

Maternal Calving Ease is measured as the percentage of unassisted births. A higher value is greater calving ease. These Igenity profiles can be used to make replacement heifer decisions as well as be used to select future maternal sires.

Docility Calm cattle are not just about handler safety. Calm cattle eat more, have better response to vaccinations and preconditioning and are more tender. The Igenity profile for docility is the animal’s genetic potential to be extremely calm, or to have calm offspring. Higher scores from Igenity for this trait indicate a higher percentage of calves that possess acceptable behavior.

Coat Color The Igenity Coat Color analysis looks at the genes that determine red or black coat color. Results are reported as Yes (Homozygous Black) or No (Not Homozygous Black). The black gene is dominant over red. Black animals may carry one or two copies of the black gene. Only homozygous black animals will have 100% black offspring. The result of this test is presented for the black Salers bulls in this sale book.

NR (No Result) Some samples may look normal but still are unable to produce acceptable results. This often occurs due to contaminants that are undetectable to the naked eye, dirt, mold or other foreign matter.

Higher scores are not necessarily better—it just means that the animal has the potential for more of that trait. For the most informed decisions, use Igenity profiles in conjunction with other selection and management tools, like conformation and EPDs. Select the scores which are best for your animals and your operation.
