Open House and Bid-Off Sale March 4-5, 2011, 2011 Pawnee Rock, Rock KS

Fellow Cattlemen, We appreciate you taking the time to consider the offering for our first “Proven Performance, Predictable Genetics” Open House and Cowboy Bid-Off. For many years, we have sold bulls private treaty at the farm and developed many customer relationships that have been instrumental in our drive to breed cattle that are not only functional, but commercially acceptable. We feel so strongly about our genetic advancement in the past few years, we decided to change our marketing plan and share it with a wider sector of the cattle industry. Our hope is this change will broaden customer relationships and continue to put Shorthorn and Shorthorn-influenced genetics in the hands of some of the industry’s most progressive cattlemen. Many of you may have questions about the Cowboy Bid-Off and its process, don’t worry. Give us a call and we will help in any way, whether it is answering questions or proxy bidding for those that can’t be with us on the 5th. We hope you like the changes and find something that can advance your program. Feel free to come at anytime and make sure to join us the evening of March 4th for supper, as well lunch on the 5th. Sincerely, Marty and Scott Loving

The beef business is based on maximizing pounds and minimizing inputs. 0603’s mother is one of the easiest fleshing and lowest maintenance cows we have ever seen. Combine her genetics with the performance of Prestige and you will see an absolute low input, red meat machine. If his birth weight number is holding you back, his mother has averaged 83 lbs. He may not be a heifer bull, but it won’t surprise me when he proves himself as a calving ease sire.

This kind of calf doesn’t come along everyday, putting both the genetics and eye appeal in the same package. Low birthweight, rapid growth, and moderate framed will make him super attractive to a lot of scrutinizing cattlemen. A closer look at his birth and calving ease EPDs reveals him in the top 10% in each column, thus we think he may be the surest bet for reducing calving issues. We think so highly of him, we are retaining a half possession interest and will work with his new owner to effectively utilize him in both programs. Selling ½ interest, ½ possession.

A very neatly patterned calf from a bit higher performing cow family, evident by the fact he is in the breed’s Top 15% of Weaning, Yearling, and Milk EPDs. 0632 will give you growth and pounds no matter your desired destination and will do it with style to boot.

This is the little guy in the pen and isn’t going to blow you away with great performance figures, but he is as close to that sure fire heifer bull as you will find. He already ranks in the Top 1% of the breed for BEPD and Top 10% for CE. His mother stems from a super efficient and moderate framed cow family that just doesn’t miss. The guys that will need a smaller frame bull to use on heifers long term, need to take a look at 0630.

Here may be the sleeper in this pen. He is the youngest in his contemporary group, which means he weaned a little early and so gives up a little weaning performance, but with a 76 lb birthweight and loads of eye appeal, he has herdsire written all over him.

An absolute standout from the day he was born. Just a 76 lb calf, but as typical of the Jazz cattle, he hit the ground with his foot on the throttle. Exceptional numbers for birth that won’t give up weaning and yearling performance make him extremely versatile in many operations.

Many people find his mother for being a picture of easy keeping, reproductively sound, and attractively styled. With only one heifer calf in recent years, this 10 year old cow continues to produce bulls that get better with each season. 9620’s ¾ brother was our record seller 2 years ago to Cyclone Trace Cattle Co, and if his progeny are any barometer of 9620’s future, he may be a bargain.

With the price of feeders and fats at record highs, each additional pound is of value. 9613 is begging for a commercial set of black females to capitalize on some heterosis. He is the highest indexing weaning, yearling, and REA bull in the offering. Take a look, a 730 lb. weaning weight, without creepfeed, and a massive 16.2” rib eye. Not to mention he is out of one of our most popular cows, that just happens to rank in the Top 1% of the Shorthorn breed’s dams for WW, YW, and Milk EPDs. Don’t overlook the potential!!

Moderate framed, well balanced and a calf that gives you a lot of eye appeal. His mother is an 8 year old, blue collared cow that weans a calf and breeds back on time, year after year. It seems like that is all you can ask her to do.

8

Spring Two Year Olds Don’t think his group of spring coming two year olds are a bunch of leftovers. Many of our long time customers know, we will not try to push sales on these calves as yearlings. March and April calves are not ready for heavy service and rough conditions as yearlings. Only one calf left this group last year and we think this set has some excellent assets in a mature ready to work package.

Fall Two Year Olds These older bulls are ready to go to work. They were good enough that we kept them back a year ago to use on our own cows. 8582 was our pick of the fall bull offering a year ago and proved himself on large group of open heifers, which we calved this last fall. These bulls are old enough and experienced and will be able to service large numbers of cows.

These bulls are sired by a halfblood Shorthorn/Angus bull we used the fall of 2008 before selling him to one of our most valued customers. They are carbon copies of that Connealy FrontPage son with another ¼ of Shorthorn. If you are looking to keep a black cow base black or wanting to try Shorthorn for the first time, don’t pass on this opportunity.
