Roche Ranches 22nd Annual Sale

Page 1

Welcome to the 22nd Annual Roche Ranches Bull Sale. We sincerely appreciate everyone who has supported our program over the years. Your trust in our genetics and confidence in our program means a great deal to our family, and we are grateful to each of you who has purchased bulls from us and allowed us to be a part of your ranching success. There has never been a more exciting time to be in the cattle business. The market is incredibly strong, with record prices for calves, cull bulls, and cull cows—levels we have never seen before. We feel fortunate to be involved in this industry alongside so many hardworking cattlemen and women.

We would also like to recognize the generations who came before us and helped build the foundation we stand on today. A special thank you goes to Grandpa and Grandma Hadfield, Grandpa and Grandma Doug and Doris Roche, and to our dad for taking the leap and purchasing the ranch in Utah in 1992. We also owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to J.D. Harris, who believed in our father and helped provide the financing when the banks wouldn’t. Without his faith and support, we would not be here today.

We are incredibly grateful for the hardworking men who help keep our ranch running every day. Our Peruvian and Mexican crew are the backbone of our operation, and we want to extend a sincere thank you to Gonzalo, Pedro, Alfredo, Eddie, Lorenzo, and Abel. Their dedication and work ethic make a tremendous difference in the success of our operation.

We also want to thank the members of our family who work together to keep everything moving forward. Ranching is truly a family effort, and we are grateful for the support, sacrifice, and commitment each member brings to the ranch.

A special thank you goes to Tyton Roche for his dedication and service during his mission in Brazil. We are grateful for the work he did there and are thankful to have him back home with us. Most importantly, we thank God for His countless blessings. He has blessed us with this land, with the gospel of Jesus Christ, and with the moisture and resources we need to sustain our cattle and sheep. Without His hand in all of it, none of this would be possible.

As ranchers, we believe long-term success comes from working with nature rather than against it. Paying attention to our grass, range conditions, and natural resources is the key to building a sustainable operation. Gross income may look good on paper, but it is net income and long-term stewardship that keep ranches in business for generations.

Another point we emphasize in our program is the level of selection behind these bulls. We keep only the top 10% of our male calf crop as bulls. That level of selection ensures that only the very best make it into this sale, providing our customers with genetics designed to move their herds forward.

Finally, we want to thank all our customers—both longtime buyers and those new to our program. Many of you have supported us for nearly two decades, and we are deeply grateful for your loyalty and trust. We stand behind these bulls 100%, and if there is ever a problem, we will make it right.

We look forward to seeing you at the sale and visiting with everyone. Thank you again for your continued support, and here’s to another great year in the cattle business.

Sincerely,

Roche Ranches

Jeff,

Livestock Auction – Willard, Utah

We will be offering 30 to 50 head of 2 to 4-year-old cows, many pairs, and heavy-breds. All these cows will be bred by Roche Ranches’ herd bulls, and a select few will be AI-bred. These cows are for sale based solely on frame size. They are a tick larger than our operation needs and will mature into 1,300–1,400 lb. cows. They have foraged most of their lives and have been fed very few times. These cattle have learned to range out and make a living with what your range will provide. They are short grass and graze brush cattle. The pairs will have matching tag numbers, and calves will be slick and non-vaccinated. Bred cows will be confirmed pregnant by Dr. Ira Mickelsen and will sell in groups according to pregnancy status. All cows will be poured and will have received a modified live Vibrio/Lepto shot and 8-way. Bid confidently on a really nice set of cows that have their whole life ahead of them.

The cattle in this year’s offering are 100% ranch-raised, one-iron cattle that have been turned out and expected to make a living their entire lives. These cows have been developed under real range conditions. In fact, the cattle in this year’s offering have not been fed anything all winter — even the Utah cows never received a lick of hay. They are hardy, practical cows that know how to forage and take care of themselves.

Roche Ranches Bull Sale 2026 - IGENITY DNA Explanation

We’ve incorporated IGENITY DNA testing into this year’s offering because we believe it gives a more accurate and reliable evaluation of each bull than traditional EPDs. Instead of relying strictly on pedigree and reported data, this testing evaluates the bull’s actual DNA. That gives us a clearer picture of how each bull is truly built genetically.

What we’ve been really pleased with is how well the results line up with what we’re already seeing and measuring. The bulls we’ve identified as strong calving ease prospects, growth bulls, and long-lasting cattle are reading very similarly in their DNA profiles. That gives us a lot of confidence that the numbers are matching real-world performance. We feel like this adds another level of accuracy to our program. It helps us make better predictions, and it should help you make more informed decisions when selecting bulls. To be honest, we’ve never been completely sold on traditional EPDs from the breed associations. We feel like this DNA data is more direct, more consistent, and easier to understand.

How to Read the Scores: Most traits are scored on a scale (typically 1–10). Each number represents a real genetic difference between bulls.

Real-World Examples:

Weaning Weight: Each one-point difference is worth roughly 6–8 pounds per calf at weaning. So a bull scoring a 6 compared to a 4 could add about 12–16 pounds at weaning.

Average Daily Gain: Higher-scoring bulls can add roughly 0.1 to 0.2 pounds more per day, which can result in 20–30 extra pounds over a feeding period.

Stayability (STAY): Stayability represents the likelihood that a bull’s daughters stay in the herd and remain productive over time. A difference of 3 points (for example, a 7 vs a 4) can represent roughly an 8–12% increase in daughters remaining productive in the herd longer (typically through 5–6 years of age). In practical terms, that means more daughters staying in production, fewer replacements needed, and lower long-term costs. It’s not exact every time, but it gives a very practical way to compare bulls and understand what those scores mean in real dollars.

We hope this added information gives you more confidence in your buying decisions, and we truly appreciate your support of our program.

ROCHE RANCHES - BCHF (BOVINE CONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE) SUMMARY

What is BCHF?

Bovine Congestive Heart Failure (BCHF), sometimes referred to as brisket disease, occurs when cattle develop high blood pressure in the lungs. This pressure can cause enlargement and eventual failure of the right side of the heart. Symptoms may include swelling in the brisket, labored breathing, poor performance, and sometimes sudden death.

Why Roche Ranches Tested for BCHF

Genomic testing can identify DNA markers associated with increased or decreased risk of heart failure in cattle. By testing our bulls, Roche Ranches can identify animals with more favorable genetic profiles for heart and lung health. This information allows our customers to make more informed breeding decisions, particularly in regions where cattle are exposed to environmental stress such as higher elevations.

Why It Matters for High-Altitude Ranchers

Producers running cattle in mountain environments often face greater risk of brisket disease. Selecting bulls with lower BCHF EPD values may help improve altitude adaptation, reduce the risk of heart failure, and produce cattle with stronger heart and lung function. Feedlots have also seen increasing attention given to this trait because large, fast-growing cattle can sometimes experience heart failure under certain conditions. By selecting bulls with favorable BCHF genetics, ranchers can help produce cattle that remain healthier throughout the entire beef production chain.

BCHF SCORE GUIDE:

<0 = EXCELLENT (LOWEST GENETIC RISK) - 0-1 = GOOD (FAVORABLE GENETICS) - 1-2 = ACCEPTABLE (MODERATE

TOP 30 PRODUCTION BULLS

This list identifies the bulls in the offering with the strongest genetic potential for growth and pounds of calf at sale time. These bulls rank highest when combining three key IGENITY® growth traits:

• Weaning Weight (WW) – genetic potential for heavier calves at weaning

• Average Daily Gain (ADG) – the ability for calves to gain weight efficiently each day

• Yearling Weight (YW) – genetic potential for overall growth through the yearling stage

The IGENITY scoring system uses a 1–10 scale, where 5 represents the national database average. The IGENITY database includes DNA information collected from many of the most progressive seedstock and commercial cattle herds in the country, including some of the most respected cow herds in the beef industry. Because of this, scores above 5 represent genetics that are above average compared to some of the top cattle populations in the nation. While genomic testing cannot guarantee performance in every environment, these bulls represent the cattle in the Roche Ranches offering the strongest DNA indicators for growth and pounds of calf according to their IGENITY genomic profile.

TOP 30 CARCASS BULLS

This list highlights the bulls in the offering with the strongest genetic potential for carcass value. The ranking combines four IGENITY carcass traits that influence beef quality and yield.

• Marbling (MARB) - genetic potential for higher quality grades

• Ribeye Area (REA) - muscling and red meat yield

• Tenderness (TEND) - likelihood of producing more tender beef

• Hot Carcass Weight (HCW) - genetic potential for heavier carcasses.

The IGENITY scoring system uses a 1–10 scale where 5 represents the national database average. The IGENITY database includes DNA information from many of the most progressive seedstock and commercial cattle herds in the country, including some of the most respected and high-performing cow herds in the beef industry. Because of this, scores above 5 represent genetics that are above average compared to some of the best cattle populations in the nation. Bulls that rank high for these traits are expected to sire calves that produce high-quality, well-muscled carcasses with greater value on the rail.

TOP 30 heifer bull candidates

These are the Top 30 heifer bull candidates in the Roche Ranches offering according to DNA testing, based on a combination of IGENITY® Birth Weight (BW) and Calving Ease Direct (CED) scores. The IGENITY scoring system uses a 1–10 scale, where 5 represents the national database average. The IGENITY database includes DNA information from many of the most progressive seedstock and commercial cattle herds in the country, including some of the most respected cow herds in the beef industry. Because of this, scores above 5 represent genetics that are above average compared to some of the top cattle populations in the nation. For heifer bull selection, lower BWs indicate genetics for lighter birth weights while higher CED scores indicate improved calving ease. While no genetic test can guarantee calving ease in every situation, these bulls rank as the strongest heifer bull candidates in the offering based on their DNA profile. They represent the bulls most likely to transmit favorable calving ease genetics according to the IGENITY genomic evaluation.

TOP 30 cow maker candidates

The IGENITY Maternal Index is designed to identify bulls that are most likely to sire productive, long-lasting daughters that raise strong calves. The index combines several traits related to fertility, longevity, and calf performance. Key traits that influence this index include stayability, heifer pregnancy, calving ease, milk, and calf growth. Bulls with higher Maternal Index scores are more likely to sire daughters that stay in the herd, breed consistently, and raise strong calves year after year. The IGENITY scoring system uses a 1–10 scale where 5 represents the national database average. This database includes DNA information from many of the most progressive seedstock and commercial cow herds in the country, including some of the most respected and high-performing herds in the industry. Because of this, scores above 5 represent genetics that are above average compared to some of the best cattle populations in the nation. The bulls listed below represent the strongest maternal genetics in the Roche Ranches offering. Their Maternal Index scores rank well above the national database average, indicating a strong likelihood of producing productive, long-lasting daughters.

j6 mashona 8130

This bull is an absolute machine. At 6-years-old, he continues to work in both spring- and fallcalving herds on Clear Creek Ranch in Winnemucca, NV. We get approximately 100 head of calves sired by this bull every year, and they are 100% marketable and good. We have kept over 70 head of his daughters; they are some of our best range cows, and many are coming with their 3rd calf. We love them. J6 Mashona 8130 is 100% black and polled but will throw an occasional red or scurs.

This dark red bull is a physical athlete, sitting on a perfect set of feet and legs. Bull has remarkable breeding ability and libido. Bull sires very easy-keeping daughters with tidy udders. His daughters are rationing over 100 on their progeny.

Black and polled with just the right amount of Beefmaster to make his calves really pop. Hardly a hint of the Beefmaster look in his progeny. Bull is incredibly long and sound. Daughters are rationing over 102 on weaning.

Top-selling bull in our 2013 sale. This bull only gets better with time. Consistency is this bull’s strong suit; he never has a throwaway. With over 70 head of direct daughters in production. This bull is one of the best we have ever used for raising good, honest, hard-working cattle for our dry, arid rangelands.

Soxey is a 7-year-old herd sire that has spent his entire life roaming the Nevada desert and is still as spry as Bill Clinton on Epstein Island. His dam produced him at 15-years-old. Logevity and productivity built into this bull.

j6 mashona 8130

Lots 1–21 represent one of the strongest sets of two-year-old bulls we have ever offered. We are excited for you to evaluate this outstanding group. All bulls have been trich and semen tested by Dr. Ira , ensuring their fertility and readiness for the upcoming breeding season.

These bulls were developed the way range bulls should be—by working as yearlings, primarily in the Nevada desert and on our Utah ranch. This experience has proven their ability to handle rugged conditions and large pastures. With their strong structure, hard feet, and added maturity, we confidently recommend them for a 40:1 breeding ratio.

It’s important to emphasize that these bulls are not leftovers from last year’s sale. They are some of our favorites from the 2022 calf crop and were intentionally held back to gain valuable experience working as yearlings. They were grazed outside until February 1st before receiving any harvested feed. Because of this, they may not appear as large as some two-year-old bulls offered elsewhere, but they will be sounder, tougher, and better suited to cover more cows over time.

“Roche bulls are out of a moderate-sized range of cows that work for a living, just like mine do. They are structurally correct and developed slowly to moderate condition to maximize their longevity. Roche bulls will breed more cows for more years than their competitors, which gives me more bang for my bull-buying dollar.”

Lots 22–55 represent our long yearling bulls. These bulls were born in September and October of 2024, giving them a few extra months of age compared to most traditional yearling bulls. For producers who still want to use bulls in range associations or yearling bull programs, these bulls fit that window very well while offering a little more maturity and development.

These bulls were born and raised in the fall of the year and wintered on their mothers, which says a lot about the type of cows they come from. Their dams carried them through the winter and raised them outside without any harvested feed supplementation, demonstrating the kind of maternal strength and efficiency we expect from our cow herd.

Most of these bulls were raised in Nevada, where they were developed the way range bulls should be. Many of them ran on over 60,000 acres of rocky, arid desert country, allowing them to develop sound feet, structure, and durability in a tough environment. The remainder of the long yearling bulls were raised on our Utah ranch under similar practical ranch conditions. These bulls have been slowly and responsibly developed, allowing them to grow naturally without being pushed. Most of these long yearling bulls did not receive any harvested feed until January 1st, spending most of their development grazing under real ranch conditions.

All bulls will be semen tested and trich tested by Dr. Ira Mickelsen prior to the sale to ensure their fertility and readiness for the upcoming breeding season.

We really like offering this group of long yearlings because they provide additional maturity and size without the need to push them hard to reach breeding condition. As a result, they remain sound, durable, and ready to go to work.

These bulls should have no problem handling 35–40 cows per bull in a typical breeding environment.

This light red bull is out of an outstanding all-black first-calf heifer. That’s the reason why his weaning weight is a little lower than the others. He is out of a first-calf heifer and didn’t come in to get put on feed until almost the end of February. This bull has been wintered out all winter and is a really good calving-ease prospect.

This bull is straight black. He gets a little bit nervous when cornered but is respectful. A bull that can go out and handle a lot of cows in tough country, born and raised on 60000 acres in Winnemucca Nevada.

“There are a couple of things about the Roche bulls that I like; we seem to have fewer problems with soundness without giving up marketability. They have also been a cost-effective option for us.” - mason warr

“I like buying Roche cattle because of their moderate frame. I know their cows and bulls work. They are not babied. You always know what you get when you see it.”

Another really good black white face calf by our bull J6 SOXY 691 who will be turning seven years old this spring and has ran all seven years of his life out on the Nevada desert which is a testament to his durability and soundness.

Don’t overlook the grandam of lots 49 50 51 and 52. J6 691 was a cow that produced until her 15th year of production and her production records were 13 head of weaned calves and a weaning ratio of 102.

This bull is a little behind his contemporaries for size and weight as he was accidentally bummed at about 60 days of age when the calf was shipped to Ririe and his mother was left home. He is a really good calf and a chance to get some sought-after genetics. His mother is a perfect-sized red Ribeye cow.

J6 Standout 318

This bull is out of a 13-year-old dam that has a weaning ratio of 101 on 11 head of calves. He is a really stout bull that will put a ton of performance into your cattle.

Lots 56-76 represent our yearling bulls. All bulls will be semen-tested and trich-tested by Dr. Ira Mickelsen, prior to the sale, to ensure their fertility and readiness for the upcoming breeding season.

These bulls were put on feed around January 1st on a high-roughage grower ration designed to allow them to develop naturally without being pushed. As you can see in the test gains, these bulls have been fed to average approximately 2 to 2ó pounds of gain per day, allowing them to grow and develop while maintaining soundness and longevity.

Lots 56-65 are a very special group, as they are all half-brothers sired by the ABS bull 231A. We absolutely love what these calves look like — their shape, muscle, and overall performance. They appear to be developing into moderate-framed cattle that still carry plenty of performance, which is exactly how their sire, 231A, reads both on paper and when evaluated visually. He is an extremely three-dimensional bull, and his sons are following right in his footsteps. We believe this group will be some of the favorites in the sale.

Lots 66-76 are yearlings born and raised in Nevada. Other than being handled a couple of times to record data and identify them, these bulls have spent their lives out on range and have had very little handling. Because of that, some of them may act a little nervous when sorted off alone. Buyers should understand these bulls have simply been raised in big country and have not been around people much. Once they are turned out and allowed to go to work, they will settle in and perform just fine.

These Nevada-raised bulls are extremely sound and durable, and they should easily handle 30-35 cows as yearling bulls.

J6 Brad 608

This bull is sired by a bull we sold to Brad Peterson four years ago that he absolutely loved. We had the opportunity to buy back a couple of his best bull calves and bought this one back along with another we are retaining for in-herd use. A really stout bull that will add performance.

All these 231A sired sons have super performance and are very stout. This bull just has a splash of a quarter Beefmaster from his half-blood Beefmaster mother.

Another really stout 231A son backed by a larger framed dam, so this bull should be a little bigger framed. If you are after performance and terminal oriented genetics this is your bull.

We have used Roche bulls since they started having a bull sale. These bulls have fit in well and become the foundation of our program. We appreciate the consistency we see in our calf crop each year! These bulls have always gone to work in harsh country. We have appreciated the relationship we have developed with the Roche family.

Lots 66 through 76 are all Nevada-raised yearlings. They’ve only been handled a few times by people and are turned out 365 days a year on our Clear Creek Ranch. They don’t get much human interaction. These bulls do not like to be cornered or separated from the herd but they are respectful of fences and people. These yearling bulls are very sound-footed, athletic, and capable of handling a lot of cows and big country.

These Nevada-raised yearlings come from cows that run in a large desert environment where over a thousand head calve unassisted. The mothering ability and survivability required in that kind of country weeds out the weak ones and leaves the kind that thrive in tough conditions.

“At Roche Ranches, we stand behind our Bulls 100%. If for any reason you’re not completely satisfied, we will make it right.”

- Justin Roche

Another nice Nevada yearling with a good disposition and a really nice moderate-framed dam.

“We buy Roche bulls because they can work in any condition you throw at them. They’re very solid bulls that can keep their shape year round breeding cows and the neighbors cows if needed. They’ve got good feet and throw the pounds to calves and very easy keeping replacement heifers. We have used Roche bulls for many years and never have a problem, and if you do they make it right.”

Very similar to his brothers, just a splash of white on his head. Lots 66 through 76 are sired by J6 Range Master 0171, a bull that is just incredible. He looks awesome all year round and his crossbred makeup with just a tick of Beefmaster does him a lot of good while still producing black, polled calves that look like SimAngus and are fully marketable.

A straight red bull that ought to do just a bang-up job on heifers. He came light at birth and has a real calving-ease look. His dam is about a thousand-pound cow that hustles on the desert and does a tremendous job. She stems from our old matriarch cow J6-515, and this young cow looks so much like her that we tagged her the same number.

J6 RangeMaster 4632

A real cool blaze-face bull that is very slick haired and sheds extremely early. If your cows are not slicking off fast enough, keeping replacement daughters out of this bull should change that quickly. He is likely homozygous for the slick hair gene and should pass it along to his calves.

J6 RangeMaster 4617

“Here at Lakeview Ag, we have found strong value in purchasing Roche Ranches bulls, primarily for their maternal strength and long-term stability. The way these bulls are raised and developed translates directly into reliable performance in our herd. As a cow-calf operation that also retains ownership and finishes our own calves through harvest at True West, we depend on genetics that deliver from start to finish. Roche bulls help us produce top-tier calves that grow efficiently, finish well, and meet our standards on the rail. At the foundation of our operation is the goal of healthy calves, strong breedback, and lasting stayability - and we’ve found that Roche bulls consistently provide the balanced, well-rounded traits needed to succeed across every stage of prouction.”
