Welcome Greetings to our 9th Annual Production Sale. We are offering you a selection of Bulls and Heifers from both old proven genetics and some new promising bloodlines.

“Profitability” for our customers has always been our focus. Customers have been telling us that their growth has improved after using GCCR Bulls and this year long time customers,Tim and Bonnie Downing, won the “Profitability Award” for their pen of heifers sired by GCCR bulls.The pen was the top at the Nebraska Sandhills Cattle Association Performance and Carcass contest.

“Why buy GCCR Genetics?”

1. POUNDS. GROWTH.

Our herdsires and AI genetics are in the very top percentiles of growth in the breed. Our growth must also be balanced with calving ease.

2. MATERNAL TRAITS.

We only select and use bulls whom we know will make good cows. Milk, udders and appropriate maternal instinct. “The Maternal Edge”

3. DISPOSITION.

We only breed and retain genetics with quiet disposition. Herdsires and AI sires must have excellent docility. We do not own or allow a hotshot as our cattle are handled and trained to work with people. If something shows up with a nervous or aggressive disposition it will be immediately marketed.

4. FEEDLOT PERFORMANCE. Wilson FeedYard finishes out our calves every year. We use all data to help us evaluate carcass, feed efficiency and growth.

5. GUARANTEE.

We expect GCCR genetics to work for you. If you do have a problem please let us know and we will do our best to work with you. This is a family owned and operated program – no cooperators. All cattle are raised here and you do not have to deal with anyone else when you need something.

GCCR Bull and Heifer Development Dr. Kelcey Swyers of Grassland Nutrition Consulting developed a ration for both our bulls and heifers to ensure gain and growth with longevity.

Wintering/Delivery GCCR will board any bulls not taken at the sale free until April 30. Delivery will be scheduled after the sale to start as soon as possible. Please let the sale clerks know the day of the Sale if you are taking the bulls or if you want us to deliver. Please take heifers home sale day or arrange to pick them up from us as soon as possible. Bulls and heifers not taken sale day are brought back to ranch shortly after the sale so that we are taking care of them.

Final Data: Dr Troy Worth will do a Breeding Soundness exam prior to sale.

Semen Interest: GCCR will retain a 1/3 revenue sharing interest in semen from the Sale Bulls. Buyers will have full possession.

Guarantee: In accordance with the Simmental Association, Bulls are guaranteed for the first breeding season–a replacement bull or credit on next year’s sale minus salvage value. See Jim Gies for mortality insurance. Call us as soon as possible if you have a problem or concerns.

The American Simmental Association and the American Red Angus Association have become partners for the purpose of EPD calculation. In order to make it easier for the customers, they have agreed to work on the same base, so this summer, watch for the EPDs to be on a new base.

The only thing you have to think about is to remember to look at the EPD averages to be able to compare the EPDs of each animal to the new average. It will not change the spread between any bulls or the meaning of each EPD.The base number will just be different for each trait. It will actually make it easier to compare animals across breeds.

BBS TOP CUT Top Cut is now the #1 Purebred Simmental growth bull in the breed with the highest combined weaning and yearling weight EPDs. We have used many of the top growth bulls and still the Top Cut calves come in with the highest growth. This year we have 10 sons who can improve your growth and should work well particularly on Angus based cow herds. The Top Cuts are born long and smooth shouldered so that used on cows you will have no calving issues. We have around 40 Top Cut daughters in the herd and are keeping 10-15 this year because they are making such good cows. Note some of our better Angus sired bulls are out of Top Cut daughters. If you want to add pounds to your calf crop here is an opportunity to choose from the best growth genetics in the breed.

With feed costs high, in today’s cattle feeding environment , you need an animal that will perform efficiently and hang a carcass that will generate premiums above “average” cattle. We have been feeding Gengenbach Cattle Co calves for the last six years and they have proven that they can do both. The gains are well above the yard average and the conversions are as well. We have been marketing these cattle through the US Premium Beef grid in the spring and early summer. This grid works well for cattle that grade choice and dress above the plant average as do the Gengenbach cattle. The disposition of the cattle is excellent which makes everyones’ job easier. It has been a pleasure feeding Randy and Mary Jo’s cattle.

FOR SALE - PRIVATE TREATY We will be selling private treaty approximately 200-300 bred cows and cow/calf pairs this spring. This is a herd reduction because we do not have enough grass and labor to maintain 700 cows. We plan on maintaining a cowherd of approximately 400 so will still have plenty of cows to offer premium seedstock. Quick Reference to ASA EPDs and $ Indexes Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available

for co mparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their p rogeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and –5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving fro m -5 to +10 y ields 15 units).

Key to using EPDs is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent mo re unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ran king chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank h im relat ive to other bulls in the breed. Listed below are the units ASA EPDs are expressed in: All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. (See below for more details.)

Average Daily Gai n (ADG): Pounds of postweaning daily weight gain.

Back Fat (B F): Inches of backfat.

Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight.

Cal vi ng Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers.

Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight.

Docility (DOC): Percent of offspring achiev ing a docile (1) score.

Maternal Cal ving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters.

Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk.

Marbling (MRB): Marb ling score.

Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth.

Ri beye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye.

Warner -Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF): Pounds of force required to shear a steak.

Stayability (S TAY): Percent of daughters remain ing in the cowherd at 6 years of age.

Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per co w exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (See belo w for more details.)

Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight.

Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight.

Yiel d Grade (YG): Yield grade score.

$ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through well conceived, rigorous mathematical co mputation, $ indexes blend EPDs and e conomics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (b red to both Angus first -calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remain ing heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.

Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.

Using API and TI: First, determine wh ich index to use; if you’re keep ing replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth co mpared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull co mpared to another. For examp le, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an ext ra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 d iff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ran king chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the population.
