> LETTER FROM THE EDITOR A DIFFERENT VIEW FOR 2022...

2022 has arrived and I hope that you are doing your best to thrive. To be honest, for me it’s hitting a bit differently than anticipated. I am sure many of you were expecting to see a photo or two of the newest addition to our Ringside family. As many of you know and some may be learning for the first time - God had different plans and gifted us an angel instead. On Oct. 21, 2021 Kinsley Grace Adcock arrived stillborn at 38 weeks as the most perfect angel we have seen.

We appreciate the love and support the industry has shown us and our families. We have slowly been picking up the pieces and navigating this unexpected road. We must trust God and his plan and lean on our faith. To say the least - the outpouring of love from the ag community has been overwhelming and inspirational and we hope that we can pay it forward in the year’s to come. Slowly, everyday I am coming out of the fog and finding my brain again. Thank you for the grace you have given as I have been slow to catch up on emails and calls/texts at times.

This issue recaps the winter show season and previews the spring sale season. March and April are just around the corner - even though the winter temps in Illinois right now tell a different story.

Thank you to those who stepped up to take photos at NAILE in my absence and help out. It was beyond appreciated. From what I watched at home and heard reported back, NAILE was a great show and the quality was HIGH. I am looking forward to the 2022 sale and show season. I have seen so many lamb photos on my social media news feeds that have me excited for what’s coming. I am even more excited to say that Emily Adcock Photography and Design/Ringside Crew will once again be the official photographers for Freedom Fest, All-American Junior Sheep Show and Youth Sheep Expo. We enjoy those shows so much and look forward to capturing your memories.

As I write this, we are in the midst of a snow storm and I was lucky enough to start the day off with a set of triplets. By midmorning one of said triplets was in the laundry room for Harper to take care of, which she loved way more than I did. With the affects of Cache Valley on our flock and numerous others, I am not going to complain too much when I get live lambs, even if it is triplets.

Lambing season is going to drag on much later than normal for us this year but we are happy with the lamb crop we are getting and hope you are having success in your flock too. As we move into the sale season we look forward to seeing many of you at various sales and helping you market your flock in 2022.

The Hauger Sisters

We are continuing with our “Siblings in the Spotlight” Series in 2022. One because we had a lot of compliments on it and two because there are so many more amazing sibling teams to share about.

We kick-off 2022 with the Hauger Sisters.

Morgan, 20, and Maddie, 16, run Hauger Hamps and Downs with their parents, located in Connersville, IN. You can usually find these girls in pink, having their sheep set up to a tee and game faces in full force.

Morgan Least: My least favorite thing is the offseason in between showing and lambing. It feels like we have nothing going on in the barn!

1. What breed of sheep do you show and why do you like it?

3. What is your favorite show and why?

Maddie: I show Southdowns. I like showing Southdowns because they have a very calm temperament, and the Southdown associations I‘m involved in are very fun.

Morgan: I show Hampshires. I enjoy showing hamps because they are a very competitive breed that pushes me to improve the quality of my hamp showstring. I also enjoy being a part of the Junior Hampshire Association and serving as the President of the Junior Board. This association is a great way to represent the Hampshire breed and have a fun time with members!

2. What’s your favorite part of showing/raising sheep? What is your least?

Maddie Favorite: My favorite part of showing and raising sheep is getting to travel all over the country and meet new people from all different states.

Maddie Least: My least favorite part is waiting for the offseason to be over so we can go to shows again.

Morgan Favorite: My favorite part of showing sheep is getting to travel around the country participating in an industry I am so passionate about and being able to share that same passion with those around me. My favorite thing about raising sheep is seeing my family’s hard work creating premium genetics, pay off with our

Maddie: My favorite show is either The Classic or All-American Junior Sheep Show. These are two of my favorites because they are the longest I get to spend with my out of state friends, and I love having team showmanship and cornhole tournaments.

Morgan: My favorite show would either be AllAmerican or Freedom Fest. These are my two favorites because of all of the extra activities each show holds to make sure the long trip is about more than just the show. They make sure that all attendees have a good time with new and old friends from all over the country. I enjoy team showmanship at All-American and the corn hole tournament at Freedom Fest.

4. What do you like about showing with your sister?

Maddie: My favorite thing about showing with my sister is the memories we get to make and how much fun we have together. But really it’s because Jason tells us to, and we pull of pink!

Morgan: My favorite thing about showing with my sister is when are able to look at each other and know exactly what we need to fix on the sheep we are showing. We have a connection and precise way to set the sheep up together that works for just us that has taken many years to perfect.

5. If you could pick another breed to show what would it be and why?

Maddie: I would pick Dorpers because they are an up and coming breed, and I think they are cool.

Morgan: I would pick Dorsets because originally that is what breed my family primarily raised.

6. What is something you have learned from showing/raising sheep?

Maddie: I have learned so much from showing and raising sheep. However, I think the biggest thing I have learned is the value of hard work and dedication, and what you can accomplish when you put your mind to something.

Morgan: I have learned so many things from both showing and raising sheep, but I would say one of my top lessons is to enjoy every single show season because even though it doesn’t always seem like it, they go fast. I am nearing the end of my junior show days and I wish I could start the clock over again to spend more time showing with my family and friends.

7. What advice do you have to other siblings who show together?

Maddie: For any other siblings that show together I would tell them to get along, not fight and listen to each other. You may not think that they are being helpful in the beginning, but you will learn that it’s always a great thing to have a foot setter right there with you!

Morgan: For any other siblings that show together, I would say to give it time because every pair of siblings that show together will tell you that there is a phase of fighting and disagreeing, but once you get in the groove of working together, the pair works well together as a team.

Cache Valley Virus Rachael Gately, DVM Tufts Veterinary Field Service By now, many of you have probably at least heard of Cache Valley Virus (CVV) if not experienced it first-hand. It’s a disease that has intermittently affected sheep and goat farms in the Midwest and West in previous years, and this year it is wreaking havoc on many sheep farms in the Northeast.

Upwards of 50% of lamb crops are being reported lost due to this crippling disease. As a result, don’t expect to see many winter and spring lambs from this region hitting the sales this spring or next year as yearlings.

HISTORY & REEMERGENCE Cache Valley Virus was first discovered in 1956, when researchers isolated it from the bodies of mosquitoes. These mosquitoes came from Cache Valley, a region in northern Utah, which is how the virus gets its name. In the late 80s, researchers found the virus to be the cause of malformations of lambs in Texas. Since then, research has shown that the virus can infect and spread among deer, cattle, and horses without causing fetal malformations.

Humans can become infected and sick too, but human patients do not contribute to the spread of the disease. A new strain emerged in the Northeast in 2010, and the incidence of CVV has been increasing ever since. This strain appears to originate from southern Mexico, demonstrating just how easily spread the new version is.

TRANSMISSION Mosquitoes are an important piece of the puzzle! These tiny pests carry CVV and spread it to mammals when they bite and feed. Periods of drought likely decrease mosquito presence and CVV transmission, whereas wet and humid periods cause an increase. Multiple years in a row of low incidence leads to extremely vulnerable populations of does/ewes.

When a wet season comes, viral resurgence leads to a seemingly catastrophic incidence level during the next kidding/lambing season. The 2020 drought followed 12 | Ringside

by New England’s very wet summer of 2021 is a prime example!

SYMPTOMS An infected animal does not usually show signs of sickness, but if a sheep or goat is bitten while she is pregnant, there can be huge detrimental effects on the fetuses. These effects depend on when during her gestation the ewe or doe is infected, and most of the effects occur when a dam is bitten between roughly 27 and 54 days gestation. If she is bitten on the earlier side of that period, she is likely to abort her pregnancy and come back into heat. If she is bitten in the middle of that period, her offspring will be born with brain and skeletal deformities, and only skeletal deformities if bitten toward the end of that period.

What if she’s bitten multiple times by infected mosquitoes during that window of pregnancy?

It’s possible that one lamb or kid is affected differently than another in that same uterus!

The first sign that CVV is affecting your flock could be that some of your dams that are suspected or confirmed pregnant come back into heat and/or are re-bred 45-60 days after they were originally bred. Later signs could include stillborns demonstrating any of the following: • Arthrogryposis - bent legs and fused joints • Scoliosis/torticollis - twisted spine • Hydrocephalus/hydranencephaly - enlarged skulls with decreased brain tissue and reduced brain function • Underdeveloped muscles • Parrot mouth • Cryptorchid - undescended testicles • Mummified fetuses Occasionally, lambs or kids are born alive with some of the signs listed above, or they may

just appear abnormally weak or drowsy. Remember, multiple offspring from the same dam may demonstrate different signs.

DIAGNOSIS CVV can be difficult to diagnose because the virus is no longer actively present in the dam or fetus when the malformed fetuses are delivered. Diagnosis is best made by identifying antibodies to the virus in either the small amount of chest fluid surrounding the lungs or in the heart blood of a stillborn. Antibodies can also be found in a blood sample from the dam, but do not necessarily mean she was infected during the specific pregnancy in question. If you suspect CVV and would like to pursue testing, keep the fetus in question cold, and contact your veterinarian to arrange sample collection and submission to Cornell Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory.

PREVENTION Preventing future outbreaks of CVV is a hot topic right now. Unfortunately, there is no vaccine for this disease.

Researchers suspect that small ruminants develop natural immunity following infection, which should protect subsequent pregnancies and prevent future offspring from being affected. This is not a proven fact; future research should confirm or deny this suspicion.

In order to limit disease in your flock, minimize exposure to mosquitoes during and shortly after the breeding season. Apply insect repellents (sprays, pourons, fogs, tags, etc), or keep females in the barn under fans during their susceptible time (from when they are bred up until 60 days pregnant). You might also consider planning breeding to avoid peak mosquito season, which is generally August through October.

Unfortunately, mosquitoes seem to be around longer each year due to early, warm spring days and delayed frosts. One suggestion that seems to be gaining a lot of popularity is to focus on breeding your ewes for fall lambing. This ensures that most of your dams are past the 60 days bred timepoint when mosquitoes emerge, and therefore unlikely to suffer the birth defects associated with CVV. Those females who don’t catch for fall lambing will likely need to still be bred during mosquito season, but having a reduced number of susceptible pregnancies helps manage the risk and reduce the impact of CVV. Lastly, hopefully we can get a vaccine engineered sometime in the near future!

OXFORD FOUNDATION FLOCK AWARD

HAPPY NEW YEAR SUFFOLK ENTHUSIASTS!

The American Oxford Sheep Association (AOSA) is happy to announce that they will be awarding at least one starter flock again in 2022 to a person or family interested in establishing their own flock of Oxfords. Through the generosity and vision of several prominent Oxford breeders, the Oxford Foundation Flock award was established in 2007. During the fifteen year history of the Award, 23 families have become new Oxford breeders.

The Oxford Foundation Flock award is given annually at the National Oxford Show and Sale.

This year, the National Show and Sale will be on the campus of Joliet Junior College in Joliet, IL on June 10 and 11, 2022. The award flock consists of quality Oxford ewes and free breeding service for those ewes for the first year. The ewes will range in age from spring lambs to young brood ewes.

Anyone interested in applying for the Oxford Foundation Flock award needs to write an essay including the following items: 1) how they learned of the award opportunity, 2) their experience raising and caring for sheep, livestock and/or pets, 3) description of facilities that they have for housing and pasturing sheep – pictures and videos are welcomed, 4) family involvement with the new enterprise, 5) connection or acquaintance with an Oxford breeder in their area, 6) describe their goals and intentions with the flock should they be awarded the Foundation Flock.

Entries should be typed and emailed to Darwin Hall (darwin.hall53@gmail.com) prior to March 15 of the current year. The winner(s) will be announced

by April 15 and the award animals presented at the National Oxford Show and Sale.

And lastly, if you’ve sold a ram this summer or fall, don’t forget to transfer ownership as the new owners may be anxious to register lambs this spring!

Annual dues letters will be arriving in January.

As a reminder, membership dues are $50 per year if paid prior to March 1st. After March 1st, dues are $65. In addition to the information regarding your membership dues and account balances, there are a few items that I ask for you to respond to the office about. The simplest way to respond is to send back the second page of the dues letter with the requested information answered. The office is requesting information on the following topics: 1. Membership Information. Again, this year, the letter will include a current record of your membership information, please review the information, and notify the office of any additions or corrections. Your account balance will also be noted.

• Raise membership fee from $40 to $50. Late membership from $60 to $65. (last increase was 2017) • No fee changes for member registrations and transfers.

• NEW breeding confirmation fee (for incomplete ram lease/breeding confirmations the office has to research/obtain) a $10 fee.

• Non-member registration will go from $16 to $25.

• Electronic 5 generation pedigrees will be free.

We are working to set up registration papers to have a 5 generation pedigree rather than 3.

• Association Mailing Address- The office mailing address is PO Box 121, Holland, IA 50642.

As a member you can appreciate that if you send in 3-4 groups of registration applications during the year that you will save back that $10 additional membership fee by not paying the extra postage and handling. Also, that $3 wasn’t always added to the checks or cash when the orders were sent in so the office had to keep track of those $3 owed all the time and ended up with a lot of accounts receivables. This will actually help with time management and postage costs for the association. We worked really hard in evaluating the whole financial picture when proposing these changes and feel that this was the best compromise to increase revenue a bit, help with office efficiency and in some cases will save some members money. ~Carol Heupel, Treasurer • Futurity – Don’t forget to submit your futurity points!

Amanda SUFFOLK REGISTRY PROGRAMS The United Suffolk Sheep Association offers several registry programs. If you raise Suffolk sheep, see if one of these programs fits your needs if you’re not already registering them!

GAP: The newly implemented Suffolk genetic acquisition program (GAP) offers USSA members, who own Suffolk ewes that have not been registered for generations, a multi-step procedure to register those females. Add value to your Suffolk flock by building a registered herd. This program is only available for one more year. To explore the opportunity to recover your

Suffolk genetics, visit the USSA website at suffolks.org for details on this genetic recovery program.

AMNESTY: The United Suffolk Sheep Association has adopted a permanent Amnesty Program. This program allows flocks to catch up on past registry work at a reduced cost. To enroll in this program flocks must complete a formal application. Flocks are eligible to enroll in the program every seven years. Yearlings are not currently eligible for the program. The program is open to purebred, percentage, and GAP Suffolks. To learn more, please contact the USSA Office.

PERCENTAGE: The United Suffolk Sheep Association offers a Suffolk Percentage Program for members to identify and maintain records on their non-purebred replacement seed stock. Percentage registered Suffolks will receive green Percentage Registration Certificates which indicates the animal’s purity in the bottom-left corner of the certificate.

Animals will receive this paper until they have reached 15/16 or 94% pure. At 94% the animal is considered to be a purebred Suffolk and will receive a white linen registration paper. For an animal to enter the Percentage Program, at least one parent must be registered as a Purebred or Percentage Suffolk.

The United Suffolk Sheep Association Foundation (USSF) was established in 2019 as a 501(c) (3) non-profit corporation with the mission of raising funds to support its goals of research, education, and youth development. The USSF had another successful year - awarding 2 scholarships, providing 5 ewe lambs to youth through the Ewe Lamb Giveaway, establishing a new Suffolk Entrepreneurs Fund and nearly meeting its fundraising goal of $10,000. If you are interested in supporting the foundation, contributions can be made through online giving at https://suffolks.org/ foundation.html or a check can be mailed to USSF, PO Box 121, Holland, IA 50642. The Foundation board is working hard to spread the word about the Foundation and continues to explore opportunities to support its goals. Suffolk Foundation Scholarship - $1000 Kenzie Kimbrough of Mount Pleasant, Texas is a Freshman in college. She is attending the University of Texas at Tyler to major in Nursing. Kenzie enjoyed showing her Suffolk sheep all across the state of Texas and can’t wait to support and help others do so.

Royer Farm Scholarship - $2000 Katherine Parsley of Sheridan, Indiana is currently a junior at the University of Kentucky studying Animal Sciences on the Pre-Vet track with a minor in Biology. She grew up on a diversified sheep and cattle farm and has raised Suffolk sheep for her entire life. Katherine has shown Suffolk sheep at the county, state, and national levels and she has stayed involved with the breed serving as the 2019-2020 National Suffolk Queen and the current President of 2021-2022 UJSSA Board of Directors. At school, she is involved with Block & Bridle, College of Agriculture Student Council, and the Pre-Vet Club. Katherine’s future career plans are to attend vet school and practice large animal or equine medicine. Katherine is the daughter of Mike and Karen Parsley.

Ewe Lamb Giveaway Winners Announced Congratulations this year’s Suffolk Ewe Lamb Giveaway winners! These individuals will receive an ewe lamb (born spring of 2022) – selecting the breeder in their district the ewe will come from. ASBA Dwarf Gene Policy: At the most recent ASBA board meeting (2021) in Louisville this past November, the board determined the Dwarf gene was a very undesirable genetic defect for the Southdown breed as well as being evidence that the animal had been cross-bred at some point. After a lengthy discussion it was determined that for association sponsored sales and shows the gene would be treated in the same manner as the other genetic defects moving forward.

Sales: Effective January 1, 2022 – For all sales sponsored by this association, the seller warrants to the buyer that sheep sold are free of Hereditary Chondrodysplasia (spider), Ectodermal Dysplasia (hairy lamb), Ovine Dwarfism and contain a minimum of one “R” at codon 171.

Shows: Effective January 1, 2023 – Any show may adopt the following policy approved by the American Southdown Breeders’ Association. Every ram and ewe shown at this show, as well as the following shows; the open and junior shows at the North American International Livestock and Exposition,

and the National Southdown open and junior shows, must be a non-carrier of Hereditary Chondrodysplasia (spider syndrome), Ectodermal Dysplasia (“Hairy Lamb Syndrome”) and Ovine Dwarfism.

Jackson serves the Society in the newly created position of Executive Director, working collaboratively with ADSBS staff and the Board of Directors to implement a plan of strategic growth for the premier organization that represents members and breeders of the Dorper and White Dorper sheep in the U.S. She will be responsible for managing the organization and cultivating avenues of advancement for the Dorper breeds.

“Recognizing the growth and progress the Society has made in recent years, the Board decided it was time to create this position and has selected Caitlin to serve as its first Executive Director,” said Sharon Holman, President of the Board. “We are excited to welcome Caitlin as she brings her experience and enthusiasm, and we look forward to a season of successful and continued growth with her at the helm.”

DORPER NEWS AMERICAN DORPER SHEEP BREEDERS’ SOCIETY ANNOUNCES CAITLIN JACKSON AS NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR HALLSVILLE, MO (January 28, 2022) – The American Dorper Sheep Breeders’ Society’s Board of Directors has selected Caitlin Jackson to serve as the new Executive Director of the American Dorper Sheep Breeders’ Society (ADSBS).

Prior to joining ADSBS, Jackson served as a County Extension Agent for nine years with the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension where she developed a regional and national reputation for sheep educational programming and outreach.

Jackson is a member of the Georgia Sheep and Wool Growers Association, the American Sheep Industry Association where she serves on the Legislative Action Council, and is a 2018 alumni of the Howard Wyman Sheep Industry Leadership School. She graduated from Clemson University with a Bachelors of Science in Agricultural Economics and earned a Master of Agriculture from Colorado State University.

“I am excited and honored to have the opportunity to lead the ADSBS as its first Executive Director,” said Jackson. “Dorper sheep are becoming ever increasingly popular across the United States and I look forward to continuing to build on the successes of the ADSBS in order to further promote and elevate the Dorper breeds within the sheep industry.”

From The Kitchen BRAISED AMERICAN LAMB TACOS

Recipe provided by |Well Seasoned Studio INGREDIENTS: For the lamb:

4 American Lamb shanks about 3-4 lbs 3 tablespoons canola or vegetable oil 1 tablespoon kosher salt 2 tablespoons chili powder 1 tablespoon cumin 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 3 cups beer 2 Tbsp red wine vinegar 2 Tbsp tomato paste 6 cloves garlic peeled and smashed 2 bay leaves 1 large onion peeled and quartered 1 orange halved 1 cup water

leaves, quartered onion, and halved orange. Pour water on top.

Cover and cook until meat is fork tender and falls off the bone, about 3 – 3 ½ hours. Uncover and allow lamb to rest about 15 minutes until cool enough to handle.

Transfer lamb to a plate, then pull meat by shredding with two forks or using your hands. Discard fat and bones.

Optional: strain braising liquid into a medium sauce pan.

Cook over medium-high heat until reduced and thickened, about 10 minutes. Can serve on the side.

To assemble tacos: Place a spoonful of lamb on top of two stacked tacos. Garnish with radishes, onion, cotija, and cilantro. Serve immediately with lime wedges (and reduced sauce, if using).

For serving:

Small corn or flour tortillas 1 cup radishes thinly sliced 1 medium onion minced ½ cup cotija cheese Cilantro Lime wedges for serving

DIRECTIONS:

To make the lamb: Preheat oven to 325 F. Pat lamb shanks dry with a paper towel, then season on all sides with kosher salt.

Combine chili powder, cumin, and cinnamon in a small bowl, then whisk to combine.

Heat canola oil in a large dutch oven over medium-high heat.

When hot, add lamb shanks and sear until browned on all sides, about 10 minutes total. Transfer lamb to a plate.

Add beer to the hot pan, then use a wooden spoon or spatula to scrape up any brown bits at the bottom. Add vinegar, tomato paste, and spice blend, then whisk to combine.

Return seared lamb shanks to the pot, then add garlic, bay 36 | Ringside
