Featured on this issue of the Ringside, are some of the crowning achievements from MacCauley Suffolks, Atglen, PA. Clockwise from the left are Granite, MacCauley 1757 the 2006 NAILE Champion Ram; Lily, MacCauley 2314, the 2011 Supreme Champion Ewe NAILE Jr Show; MacCauley 2510, the 2012 NAILE Champion Slick Ram and MacCauley 4350, the 2019 NAILE Champion Suffolk Ram. At the center is MacCauley 4896, the 2021 NAILE Champion Slick Ewe. At NAILE this year, Bill and Betsy MacCauley along with Bill Royer of IL are being inducted into the Suffolk Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame honors individuals and businesses who have had a significant impact on the Suffolk breed.
Though the direction of MacCauley Suffolks has shifted over the years, the goals remain the same: performance in the show ring and production in the barn! The MacCauley flock strives to produce “Functional Suffolks with Style.” The entire program emphasizes structural soundness, easy fleshing on grass, superior maternal instincts, male fertility, longevity and breed character. As the industry continues to change and the demand for more functional, performance-oriented sheep increases, the MacCauleys look forward to the challenge of meeting that demand with sheep that can perform in all arenas.
The MacCauley flock consists of over 350 brood ewes owned by Bill, Betsy, Chris, Justene and Kyle MacCauley all under the expert care of Evan Snyder, Farm Manager. It is truly a family business born out of a lifelong passion and a hobby gone wild.
The MacCauley team is forever thankful for all their customers, both loyal and new! Customer successes and faith in the breeding program is the fuel that keeps this fire burning.
To see MacCauley Suffolks in action, stop by their pens at Louisville, or better yet, plan a trip to the farm in Atglen, PA. Or, at the very least, visit the website www. maccauleysheep.com.

HEY THERE - DID YA MISS US?...
Wow - I don’t know about all of you, but 2022 has just been a whirlwind and I have been hanging on by fingertips to keep up. Every month I found myself saying - next month will slow down and I will catch up. (Joke’s on me that hasn’t happened yet!).
As many of you have seen we brought Morgan Hauger on as a Junior Editor this fall and THANK GOODNESS for that! Honestly, this issue can be best described as the Morgan issue because she has really taken the lead on this one. I am so excited for the extra help, creative ideas and fresh eyes. I hope that we can continue this colloboration into the 2023 year with Morgan. So first off - I want to say Thank You to Morgan for all her hard work.
I truly enjoyed getting to be the photographer at Freedom Fest, All-American Junior Show and Youth Sheep Expo this summer. Thank you to all the amazingly talented people that helped make up my crew at those events. It takes a village to capture your beloved memories at a high level.
If your house is anything like ours - Fall is busy. We are up to our necks in harvest, fall calving and in our case, in cattle world, online sales and preparing stock for the winter show season. Hopefully your lambing seasons is going well and has you excited about the coming year. As I write this NAILE entries close in just a few hours and many of you have returned home recently from BIG E.
Cruz, Morgan and myself look forward to visiting with you at NAILE, sharing this latest issue of Ringside and talking about how we can promote your flock better in 2023. This issue kicks of year 3 of Ringside. We truly appreciate those of you that continue to support Ringside by placing advertisements and trusting us to invest your marketing dollars with. Our mailing list continues to grow and we enjoy sharing your stories to the industry.

Ringside | 5 2023 DEADLINES
Where did summer go? It seems like just last week we were headed to Freedom Fest and summer was just starting. Now we are preparing to head to NAILE in a few weeks. From being late getting our crops in to traveling to numerous shows, summer went by in a flash and we are still trying to catch up.
We enjoyed traveling out East to the All American this year and being able to mark off some states we had not traveled too before. From there we were able to attend a few state fairs before settling into fall lambing and harvest.
Harvest has been slow going here but we hope to be in the downhill slide as we load up for NAILE. We hope your fall lambing and breeding has been successful and we are looking forward to catching up with everyone in November on the green shavings.
As always, if there is anything we can do to help you market your flock, please reach out to us.
THANK YOU FOR JOINING US RINGSIDE!

Siblings In the Spotlight: The Kreiger Sisters
This is a fun one as we talk to some younger juniors just starting their showing journey. For now its a pair of sisters, but little brother will be joining before we know it.
Check out what Landrey and Lynnly Kreiger from Triple L Southdowns in Indiana had to share in this edition of Siblings in the Spotlight.
1. What breed of sheep do you show and why do you like it?
Landrey: I currently show Southdowns and Hampshires primarily. I truly love to show the Southdowns because the people involved with the association and the breed have been awesome. I love going to shows and meeting up with my friends and peers from the breed.
Lynnly: I show Hampshires, Southdowns, and I have a Dorper I love to show as well. I wanted to try something different than my sister, and I chose a Dorper after seeing one at All American.
2. What’s your favorite part of showing/raising sheep? What is your least?
Landrey Favorite: My favorite thing about showing sheep is the friendships I have made and being able to spend time with my family. My siblings, my parents, and my grandparents travel with me to all of the shows. Landrey Least: My least favorite part is having to sell lambs from the barn after we have weaned them from their moms. I grow very attached to them in the barn, so it is very hard to say goodbye. Lynnly Favorite: I love to go to shows to see my friends and to enjoy the snacks my mom and nanny make. Lynnly Least: My least favorite part is saying goodbye to my sheep at the end of the year or when they have been sold.
3. What is your favorite show and why?
Landrey: The All American Junior Show, is my favorite show because outside of the competition there are so many activities for the exhibitors that only further the experience. Lynnly: The Indiana Stock Show is my favorite. It is over my birthday each year which makes it even more fun.
4. What do you like about showing with your sibling?
Landrey: It is a good bonding experience to work with my sister to achieve a goal but that doesn’t mean it isn’t hard sometimes.
Lynnly: We are still learning how to work together in the ring and get on the same page, but it is fun to have the chance to experience the ring together.
5. If you could pick another breed to show what would it be and why?
Landrey: Hampshires are a breed I already currently show, but I would choose them next if I can’t show Southdowns. My grandfather raises Hamps, so it is very rewarding to work with him to bring elite sheep to our area.
Lynnly: I would like to have a Babydoll Southdown. They are so little and fit my size right now.
6. What is something you have learned from showing/raising sheep?
Landrey: To keep working hard and not give up on myself. It isn’t always easy and there are ups and downs but it really is worth it when you are in the ring and it all comes together.
Lynnly: It is very hard to break and show lambs, so don’t give up. Having the babies in the barn is really fun and has taught me a lot about how to take care of them.

ASI ACCEPTING AWARDS NOMINATIONS
It’s time once again to submit nominations for ASI awards, which will be presented during the 2023 ASI Annual Convention on Jan. 18-21, 2023, in Fort Worth, Texas. The deadline for all award nominations is Nov. 25.
There are five awards open for nominations: The McClure Silver Ram Award, the Peter Orwick Camptender Award, the Distinguished Producer Award, the Industry Innovation Award and the Shepherd’s Voice Award.
The McClure Silver Ram Award is dedicated to volunteer commitment and service and is presented to a sheep producer who has made substantial contributions to the sheep industry and its organizations in his/her state, region or nation.
The Peter Orwick Camptender Award recognizes industry contributions from a professional in a position or field related to sheep production. Nominees should show a strong commitment and a significant contribution to the sheep industry, its organizations and its producers above and beyond what is called for in his/her professional capacity.
The Distinguished Producer Award was launched in 2014 to recognize the 150th anniversary of the national organization – the oldest livestock association in the country. This award is a way to recognize an individual who has had a significant long-term impact on the industry, including involvement with the National Wool Growers Association or American Sheep Producers Council.
The Industry Innovation Award recognizes the accomplishments of an individual or organization that improves the American sheep industry in a gamechanging way, regardless of whether its impact is felt at the regional or national level.
The Shepherd’s Voice Award for Media recognizes outstanding coverage of the sheep industry by either
print or broadcast outlets. The award excludes all publications and affiliates related solely to the sheep industry, allowing for recognition of outlets with general coverage of sheep industry issues.
Nominations must be submitted to ASI by Nov. 25, and past recipients of these awards are not eligible.
Find more information at: https://www.sheepusa.org/ researcheducation-awards
NORTH DAKOTA TO HOST SHEARING, CLASSING SCHOOLS
Those with an interest in wool might want to make plans to head North in November, as the North Dakota Hettinger Research Extension Center will host both wool classing and shearing schools on Nov. 19-21.
The wool classing school will take place at the Hettinger Armory. Topics covered at the school will include: wool fiber growth, development and production; objective measurement of wool; genetic selection programs; hands-on wool grading; wool contamination and handling practices; and wool classing, packaging, labeling and marking. The registration deadline is Oct. 28 and the school is limited to 10 students. Larry Prager of Center of the Nation Wool will join Heather Pearce of the American Sheep Industry Association as instructors at the school.
Shearers Mike Hagens, Wade Kopren and Alex Moser will handle instruction at the shearing school and will cover: the professional shearing pattern; tagging and eyeing; equipment maintenance and repair; and wool handling and preparation. The school is open to both experienced and beginning students. The registration deadline for the shearing school is Nov. 4 and the school is limited to 16 students.
The cost to attend either school is $150, and students should sign up as soon as possible as the schools can fill up well in advance of the deadline.

OXFORD NEWS
FROM DAVID TROTTER, AOSA EXECUTIVE SECRETARY
Meet the New AOSA Directors – At the Annual Meeting of the American Oxford Sheep Association (AOSA) this summer, two new directors were elected by the membership to the AOSA Board. Laurie Majchrzak and Austin Brockmann were elected to replace Beth Allison and Kermit Daniels respectively; both Beth and Kermit had served their maximum of 2 terms on the Board. Laurie is from Federalsburg, MD and has been involved with Oxfords for many years as were her children when they lived in New Hampshire. Laurie represents District 6. Austin finished his junior show eligibility a couple of years ago and he was very active with the Junior Oxford Association, serving on the officer team with that group. Austin is from Illinois and is the District 3 representative.
Also, the AOSA officers were elected during the Annual Meeting and National Sale weekend in Jolliet, IL. For 2022-2023, the organization will be lead by Darwin Hall (President) and Steve Bingen (Vice President).
Foundation Flock Applications being Sought
– The AOSA will once again be able to continue with their Foundation Flock program for 2023 through the generosity and vision of several prominent Oxford Breeders. The deadline to apply for the award is March 15, 2023. The Foundation Flock award is given out annually to help establish a new Oxford flock every year. The award consists of quality Oxford ewes and one year’s breeding service and flock consultation by an Oxford breeder in the recipient’s district. The ewes will range in age from lambs to young brood ewes.
Applicants for this award flock need to write an essay that includes the following items: 1) how you learned of this opportunity, 2) your experience with sheep, livestock, pets, 3)facilities that you have – pictures and/or videos are welcomed, 4)family
involvement, 5) connections you have with any Oxford breeder in your area, 6) illustrate your goals and intentions with the animals should you be awarded the Foundation Flock.
Essay entries should also include the applicant’s name, mailing address, phone numbers and e-mail address. Entries should be typed and e-mailed to Darwin Hall (darwin.hall53@gmail.com) by the March 15, 2023 deadline. The winner or winners will be announced by April 15. The flock will be presented to the recipient(s) at convenient and prominent event. For more information contact Darwin Hall via his e-mail.
National Oxford Queen Applications – It’s not too early for junior AOSA members to be applying for the 2023-2024 National Oxford Queen. Applicants must be between the ages of 16 and 21 as of December 31, 2023 and be a member of the American Oxford Sheep Association. An application form can be found at the AOSA website (www.americanoxfords. org). The application deadline is May 15, 2023. Currently, Suzanne Shields of Indiana serves as the 2022-2023 National Oxford Queen and if potential applicants have questions about the duties they can reach out to her at kshields@eiwifi.com or 765-6030280.
New 2022-2023 Oxford Directory – The new AOSA Directories are now available. If you want a copy, reach out to David Trotter (oxfordsecretary7@ gmail.com) and be sure to include your mailing address.

held on the last day proceeding the Supreme show. Be sure and check the NAILE website for updated information on dates and times of all the shows.
The North American show traditionally signals the end of the year for major shows and generally always represents some of the very best sheep in all breeds from every corner of the Country. Even if you are not exhibiting sheep or fleeces it is well worth the trip to watch the breed shows you are interested in and a great opportunity to meet new folks and renew old friendships as unlike most major fair and shows all breeds are generally there during the same time period.
If you are not able to attend or exhibit natural colored sheep you might consider sending a quality fleece for the wool show.
Hope to see many of you there, John Merlau President NCWGA

Ainsley: I show Natural Colored Romneys and Southdowns. I like to show many different breeds because they are fun to show and they’re cute. Braylon: I show Southdowns. I like them because they are calm and easy to train.
2. What’s your favorite part of showing/raising sheep?
Alivia: My favorite part about showing sheep is achieving your goals after multiple months hard work and determination. I also enjoy learning new skills and making lifelong friends throughout the industry. My favorite part about raising sheep is lambing season because I like to watch the baby lambs grow and develop and then determine which lambs will be sold or become a part of our show string.
Ainsley: - My favorite part about showing is winning banners and showmanship. I like raising sheep because I like seeing all the baby lambs
Braylon: - I like showing sheep because I show with all my friends and there’s good people around to show with, and my favorite part of raising sheep is learning about the animals and what experience you have with them after.
3. What is your favorite show and why?
Alivia: My favorite show is definitely Louisville because I enjoy the competition and hanging out with all my friends.
Ainsley: My favorite show is Louisville because I like the green shaving and seeing my friends.
Braylon: All American, most of my friends go and I like traveling to different states each year.
4. What do you like about showing with your sibling?
Alivia: I like showing with my siblings because I am able to teach them different techniques and tricks I have learned over the years.
Ainsley: I like showing with my siblings because I can learn from them.
Braylon: My siblings can help me in the show ring if I needed help instead of having to rush to find someone else in a short amount of time, and they can tell me if I’m doing something wrong in the show ring.
5. If you could pick another breed to show what would it be and why?
Alivia: If I could pick any other breed to show it would be Dorpers because they are unique and you use different showing techniques than you do for most other breeds.
Ainsley: If I could pick any breed it would Babydoll Southdowns because they are cute and tiny.
Braylon: I would chose Hampshires because I kinda have an idea of what to do because they are a slick sheep and you would show it the same as any other slick sheep.
20 | Ringside
6. What is something you have learned from showing/raising sheep?
Alivia: Something that I have learned from showing sheep is that there’s always room for improvement no matter how good you are at something. Something that I have learned from raising sheep is that your best show female isn’t always the greatest for reproduction. Ainsley: Something that I have learned is to keep a positive attitude and keep calm.
Braylon: I have learned that you have to work with them to have them show well, and also how to do all the processes during the year.
7. What advice do you have to other siblings who show together?
Alivia: Nothing ever gets done when you’re fighting, you might as well just accept that you’re not always going to agree on everything and learn to get along. Ainsley: Learn to get along and work together. Braylon: I would say to get along in the barn and to make sure you work with your sheep a lot and have fun with it too.
