ell, here we are nearly in the middle of Fall, and each succeeding year seems to get busier than the previous one. We’ve wrapped up our annual late summer activities with the State Fair ROV show, Husker Harvest Days and our Annual Tour.

Our ROV show met the head exhibited requirement this year with 113 head walking through the arena.

Hopefully the American Association Board will see fit to continue our State Fair Angus show as an ROV show.

My many thanks to our Board of Directors for assisting in the running of the show, checking in cattle and lining up the classes. Also thanks for their attendance at our board meeting that was held that afternoon following the show.

Husker Harvest Days was another successful outing for our Association.

We had seven members exhibit a variety of cattle. They brought bulls, heifers, cow/calf pairs and bred heifers from their breeding programs that represent the latest in genetics in their operations. Visitors to our exhibit showed a lot of interest in the cattle that “came to town”. Husker Harvest Days roundup can be found on page 7.

Our Annual Tour was held in a scenic area of the state, North Central Nebraska, headquartering in Bassett at the Historic Bassett Lodge. This year’s tour showcased Sandhills cattle operations as well as programs residing in the Niobrara River Valley. The tour participants met a total of four times as group to brainstorm and design a unique outing for tour goers. Their dedication and ideas for something totally different worked. We filled one hotel and one tour bus, about half of a second hotel and needed a second bus to transport tour goers. Check our tour highlights and our sponsorship list on pages 14, 16, 17, & 20.

My appreciation to tour Chairman, North District Director Dave Nichols for his leadership on this year’s event. And also to Becky Sawyer who was my “go to gal” on organizing the meals, serving as our contact with Certified Angus Beef staff and for all of the “little things” that made this year’s tour so special. We were able to serve CAB at nearly every meal stop and obviously Angus beef was on the menu for every meal. My appreciation to all tour participants for a job well done.

can find information on hotel rooms, banquet reservations and our speaker lineup on page 22. Hotel rooms should be reserved by November 18th, and banquet reservations are due November 25th.

This time of year means that we’ll soon transition to new leadership for our Association, at our Annual meeting and banquet in Kearney on December 3rd. Many thanks goes to our outgoing President Vince Bickel of Gordon. His strong steady influence and always upbeat attitude has kept me going many times this year. We published a record size directory, we reached a goal of over 200 members with a membership drive in May, he encouraged our Junior members as we hosted our first National Jr. show in over 25 years, and in this his last President’s letter to our membership (on page 4), he finds the silver lining in the clouds that seem to be gathering over agriculture with a bleaker looking ag economy and lower commodity prices. Vince reminds us why we do what we do, why we raise Angus beef, and why Angus is number one.

Thanks Vince for your leadership this year.

This past September, our Association lost two past President’s within one week. Ken Glaubius and Lowell Minert shared their passion for the Angus breed with many people throughout their lifetimes. You can read about their lives and contributions to our Association on page 11, in “Our Angus Family” section. While I never had the opportunity work with Ken, I can see how he made an important impact on our membership and Angus breeders.

I was personally blessed to be able to know Lowell and his family for over thirty years, starting as an Extension Assistant in the Central Sandhills Unit in the mid 80’s. Lowell’s dedication to service to others over his lifetime, in many groups and boards, on the local, state and national level reflected his willingness to improve the life of others and work for the “greater good” unselfishly. Saying “He will be missed” is an understatement. I personally valued his opinion, and in nearly every meeting he was in, when he spoke, people listened. Much of what I do for our organization, I learned from watching Lowell. I will just plain miss his presence in our Association.

Dear Membership, As I sit down to reflect on the past year serving as your president several thoughts come to mind. First and foremost I feel blessed to lead such an outstanding group of people, all with different operations and unique ideas of their own.

But with all of their differences , you see one thing in common in our members, a hard working down to earth approach of raising Angus cattle for the betterment of their own families as well as their customers.

As Nebraskan's we can take pride not only in the quality of Angus cattle we raise across this great state, but we also can pride ourselves in the way we treat one another and the true care we put into each and every animal. I will be proud to pass the torch on to Brock Foxhoven at our Annual Meeting/Banquet on December 3rd in Kearney. Brock has a super family and will do an excellent job. We hope to see you all at this event as we have lined up a great educational presentation and we need everyone’s input on how to make "your" association better! Also don't forget the Jr. Heifer Show December 4th in Kearney as well.

I do know one thing, this year is going to be a tough one on our commercial producers as well as the seedstock producers of our state. The prices for livestock, and grains have really plummeted and will make for complicated decisions to be made. We as Nebraskans are a resilient group and will struggle through this difficult time and be ready when the tides turn for the better. I still feel there will be a great demand for superior Angus genetics and

this is one of those "road bumps" we all must fight through. Good luck to all of our producers on fall and spring sales and to all participating in fall and winter shows.

In closing I would like to give a special thanks to all of our board members for their service. This is your board and they strive to make the best decisions to help our producers statewide. Also I want to sincerely thank Suzy Hebbert our Secretary/Manager for all of her hard work and dedication.

She really has all of our membership in mind and works hard to ensure we have the best state association in all of the land.

I am also thankful to be a member of a breed that really is at the top of their game. It is really hard to not go out to eat and not see some type of " Angus" on the menu. We have a superior product and I believe the whole nation identifies with our brand of quality.

Hope to see you all December 3rd – 4th in Kearney. Don’t forget the Jr. Association's semen auction as this is one of their main fundraising efforts.

Dear Nebraska Angus friends,

T

he big news in our industry is that the Certified Angus Beef brand has exceeded one billion pounds in sales for fiscal 2016! What an accomplishment, and what a nice spark of optimism for today’s cattle market.

This kind of sales success gives us assurance that the consumers are desiring (and paying for) a superior product in both restaurants and retail outlets. This news also provides justification for producers to keep striving for that efficient, productive animal that will also yield carcass merit.

Even in this down cattle market, there are still premiums paid to producers and backgrounders who choose to market their cattle in that manner. So, it still might not be the price of two years ago, but if that carcass hits the CAB mark, there’s a premium delivered.

That premium is an advantage we should all be proud of. No other breed in our industry has a machine driving demand like the Angus Association’s Certified Angus Beef program.

In the last fiscal year, CAB sales have posted 18% growth in the retail sector, 11% growth in international sales, and 5% growth in foodservice venues. Overall supply of CAB qualifying cattle is up with a 28.9% acceptance rate, which is an increase of 1.5% over a year ago.

Therefore, we producers are supplying more high quality cattle to the marketplace, and it’s being embraced by enthusiastic consumers who are recognizing the power behind the CAB label. All in all, it’s a great story line that will help to keep our breed strong.

I encourage you that if you’re dining out, or purchasing meat over the counter, to look for those restaurants and retailers that offer CAB. Being a consumer of our own brand helps to drive demand for our product and delivers premiums to every segment of the industry. Don’t forget that in doing so, you’ll also enjoy that consistent, great eating experience, too!

On another note, it is with fondness we remember former AAA Board Member and past Chairman of Certified Angus Beef, Lowell Minert. Lowell gave unselfishly of his time and talent to many segments in our industry, and was a strong booster for his own rural community and state. He provided a good example to all of us of service to others. Lowell leaves a wonderful legacy in his family, friends, community, and of course, the Angus breed. He will be greatly missed by many.

My best to all of you as we venture into another season raising good Angus cattle, and try to treat yourself to a delicious meal featuring CAB in the near future!

Grand Island, NE – Seven Nebraska Angus Association members brought a variety of their latest genetics to the largest farm show in Nebraska, Sept 13-15th. Albany Hill Farm (Todd & Dee White) of Steinauer; Dethlefs Angus Ranch of Ravenna; E D Angus (Clint & Suzy Hebbert) of Ashby; Hollman Angus from Hallam; Lazy Black Diamond Ranch (Glause Family) from Palmer; Sonderup Angus (Lori & Ashley Wagner) of Genoa and Walters Angus of Talmage, had cattle on display in our tent on Lot 1058.

Good crowds made their way through the tent on the first two days of the event, while the third was a little quieter allowing our Nebraska members to visit displays throughout the grounds. New Nebraska Regional Manager Drew Feller joined the crew the first couple of days as he became acquainted with this event and visitors to our tent. Watch for our exhibit on Lot 1058, for the 40th Anniversary of Husker Harvest Days September 12th-14th, 2017.

Angus breeders across the nation in 2016 registered 334,607 head of Angus cattle. “Our growth this fiscal year continues to demonstrate strong demand for Angus genetics and solidifies our long-held position as a leader in the beef cattle industry,” Moczygemba says. “These results underscore our members’ commitment to providing genetic solutions to the beef cattle industry.”

arvest is in full swing as I write and the holidays will be approaching when you read this.

Combines in the fields, pumpkins everywhere, calves being weaned, and the new show season just around the corner fills the season with excitement!

Crisp air, falling leaves and colorful landscapes are truly blessings after enduring hot summer days!

The Nebraska Junior Angus Association was well showcased at the Nebraska State Fair. First and foremost, I want to congratulate all Nebraska Junior Angus participants on an outstanding open show. Your hard work, commitment, and dedication were clearly evident in every animal shown.

Our yearly state fair meeting was held on Sunday, September 4. Junior members who attended the National Junior Angus LEAD Conference in August, located in Phoenix, Arizona, gave a brief overview of the sightseeing and different agricultural-related operations that were toured during the conference. Members discussed and voted on adding an amendment to the National Showmanship Rule. This amendment states that the National Showmanship participant’s parents do not need to be a member of the association for a member to participate in the national contest. Junior members welcomed Brian and Tiffany Stoller as advisors and committees for the semen auction, winter show, and silent auction were formed. You are encouraged to contact one of the officers or myself if you were not able to make the meeting but would like to serve on a committee.

The Nebraska Junior Angus Association will host the annual Winter Preview Show on December 4 in Kearney, Nebraska. Our regular junior meeting will be held on Saturday, December 3, following check-in. The junior fundraiser consisting of the semen auction will take place following the Nebraska Angus Association’s annual banquet on Saturday night. The show will be Sunday morning at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds. Entry forms will be mailed or are available on the Nebraska Junior Angus website. This show is a great experience for juniors to get their calves out for first show experience while meeting new Angus friends or catching up with the old ones. I hope to see all of you in Kearney!

Now is the time Angus breeders are readying their show prospects to sell and juniors are searching catalogues as well as the internet to find the PERFECT calf for next year’s show season. Visiting with different Angus breeders is an excellent opportunity to make new connections while learning about current issues facing producers.

Take the time and make an effort to meet new friends while you’re attending these sales. Whether you’re showing a bred-an- owned calf or purchasing one, enjoy each and every opportunity to make new friends, participate in industry discussions, and promote the Angus breed.

On a personal note, this upcoming year will be bittersweet for my parents and me. Somehow, and we do not know how, years have “zipped” by and we are now heading into my last year of being a Nebraska Junior Angus member! That’s crazy, incredible, unbelievable, and sadly … true! So, take my advice and enjoy your Angus adventure because it passes all too quickly!

Finally, my holiday wish for you and your family is to have bountiful crops harvested, delicious food to enjoy, family and friends gathered close, and a wonderful season of love, laughter, and good health.

Angus Hires Regional Manager for Colorado, Nebraska

A

ngus breeders in Colorado and Nebraska are welcoming Drew Feller of Wisner, Neb., as the territory’s new regional manager for the American Angus Association. Before officially beginning his role Sept.

6, Feller greeted many producers during the Nebraska State Fair.

Regional managers are the bootson-the-ground for the Association and serve throughout 13 membership regions across the United States. As a partner for Angus breeders and others who rely on Angus genetics, Feller will be responsible for helping cattle producers identify herd goals, learn new programs and services, and drive quality within their operations.

“A fifth-generation cattleman from Nebraska and a product of the National Junior Angus Association, Drew brings to the team a wealth of industry knowledge, energy and a true passion for the Angus breed,” says David Gazda, Association director of field services and regional manager in the southeast.

As a regional manager, Feller will represent the Angus breed at various cattle events, sales, shows and other activities throughout the territory.

Breeders are encouraged to ask him questions about Association programs and services, or for help locating Angus seedstock.

He can also advise producers on marketing opportunities available through the Association, including advertising through the Angus Journal, Angus Beef Bulletin, The Angus Report and other avenues.

“With the amount of performance data and marketing opportunities available through the American Angus Association, it’s an honor to serve both seedstock and commercial users of Angus genetics,” Feller says. “I look forward to traveling the territory, and being an active member throughout the Angus community in Colorado and Nebraska.”

Feller graduated in May 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in animal science, business concentration, from the University of Nebraska. While on campus, he was part of the Nebraska Beef Industry Scholar program.

He’s owned and managed 5F Cattle Co. since 2012, where he operated his own registered-Angus operation.

In 2015, Feller founded the Cattlemen’s Cut sale and worked with pro-

ducers to meet their individual ranch goals. He has also worked as a manager at Feller and Co. Cattle Feeder, where he contributed to feedlot expansion, herd health and feed management. He also worked in cattle procurement, marketing and sales.

Lowell Minert, lifelong Angus breeder, cattleman, husband, father and grsandfather, left this world on September 29, 2016. He was born on April 13, 1940 to Berniece (Walker) and Emery Minert, and married Carrol Roseberry on June 24, 1962. Together, they raised three children and were blessed with seven grandchildren.

Lowell graduated from Curtis High School in 1958 and from the University of Nebraska in 1962 with majors in Range and Ranch Management and Agronomy. While attending UNL he was president of the Block and Bridle Club, Rodeo Club and Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. In 1962 Lowell received a commission in the United States Navy and served one term of active duty, advancing to the rank of Lieutenant.

Lowell and Carrol moved back to Dunning in 1964 and continued the cattle business that he started with 4H projects. He owned and operated the Minert/Simonson Angus Ranch.

When looking for a role model in community service, both locally and across the state, you can look to Lowell. His leadership was a great asset to the school board, 4-H clubs, Sandhills Community Church (both as Deacon and Trustee), American Legion, and the Masonic Lodge. Lowell took an active leadership role in the beef industry, serving on the board of directors and as chairman of the Purebred Council of the Nebraska Cattlemen.

He served two terms as President of the Nebraska Angus Association and two terms on the American Angus Association Board where he also served as president of the Certified Angus Beef Board. His most recent service was on the executive board of the Ne-

braska State Fair as treasurer and was instrumental in renovating the Thompson Food Outdoor Arena.

Favorite pastimes were visiting with people and supporting young people in their endeavors, as well as sharing his passion for his cattle with people across the country and the world. In 2009, Lowell and Carrol represented the Nebraska Beef Council as ambassadors at the New York State Fair. He also hosted various judging teams, and the ranch has hosted Angus and cattleman tours and groups from Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Australia, New Zealand, England, Spain, Japan and China.

Lowell’s passion, integrity, honesty and genuine love of the Angus breed resulted in a valuable reputation in both the cattle industry and as an individual. His passion towards his commitments earned him many awards and recognitions, but he was especially passionate about his family and extremely proud of his children and grandchildren. He loved attending all their activities, whether they were showing cattle, playing sports, rodeo, or music and theater.

Lowell lived his life faithful to God and his family. He is survived by his wife Carrol of Dunning, Nebraska; son Tim and his wife Kim and children Andrea, Alexa, and Alexander of Scottsdale, AZ; daughter Cindy & her husband JW Simonson and children Shaina and Jaylee of Dunning, NE; son Wes & his wife Kelly and children Hailey and Landon of Fort Collins, CO; and a multitude of friends and extended family.

OBITUARY

Kenneth Glaubius

Kenneth Leslie Glaubius was born Feb. 27, 1944, to Leslie and Merna (Long) Glaubius in West Point. He was baptized and confirmed at the Congregational Church in Beemer and was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Wisner, where he served on church council including as president.

Ken grew up near Beemer, attended rural school through the eighth grade and graduated from Beemer High School in 1962. He was active in 4-H and exhibited livestock at many places including Chicago.

On July 19, 1964, he was united in marriage to Diane Bliemeister at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Pender.

They were the parents of three children, Lori, Kevin and Kara.

Ken was active in farming, raising Angus cattle on Blacktop Farms near Beemer, retiring to West Point in 2012. He was active in the NE Angus Association, where he served in several capacities, including as president.

He managed the Open to the World Angus Bull Sale in Atkinson for many years and had many bull sales of his own. He was a 4-H leader of the GoGetters 4-H club in Cuming County and served on the Cuming County 4H Council. He loved to help at shows, calf sales and 4-H events.

He is survived by his spouse, Diane of West Point; daughter Lori (Steve) Repenning of Mitchell, S.D.; son Kevin (Julie) Glaubius of St. Joseph, Mo.; daughter Kara (Brach) Johnson of Columbus; sister Debra Glaubius of Wisner; and seven grandchildren, Kelsey (Connor) Powell, Abby Repenning, Garret (Mikayla) Glaubius, Carissa and Hayden Glaubius, Dylan and Jaden Johnson.

Ken was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie and Merna Glaubius; an infant brother, Ronnie Dean, and grandparents Harvey and Laura Long and Theodore and Viva Glaubius.

Services were Monday, October 3rd, 2016 at Christ Lutheran Church in Wisner. Burial was at Beemer Cemetery.

Alex and Ellie live in Florence, South Carolina. Alex is a Mechanical Engineer and Ellie is a middle school English teacher. Ellie reigned as Nebraska Angus Queen in 2008-09.

Kale is employed with a turf management company that is maintains all the professional soccer fields in Davis and Sacramento. Maci was Nebraska Angus Queen in 2013-14.

Nebraska Angus Tour Spotlight

N

oRtH CeNtRAl NebRASkA HoStS touR 2016 Bassett – The historic Bassett Lodge served as headquarters for this year’s tour, Sept 23rd-24th. One hundred plus tour registrants from Nebraska and eight other states participated in the two day tour that covered nearly 300 miles and a dozen Nebraska Angus Association members plus two special interest stops. Winding through Sandhills range to the Niobrara River Valley and back to rangeland the second day…the tour drove through some of the most scenic country Nebraska has to offer.

The event was a tremendous draw as the Lodge sold out prior to the early registration deadline, with over flow rooms booked in nearby Ainsworth. A second bus was also needed to transport those people attending the tour. The biggest tour in recent years packed lots of cattle, wonderful hosts and delicious food for this year’s attendees.

Many thanks to year’s participants, sponsors and attendees for a fun, fun event. Zoetis kicked off the tour with a social for attendees and participants on Thursday evening.

Sarah Adamson, Zoetis district sales rep cooked up a great evening with “Cowboy Hors d’oeurves” prepared by the Range Café. An evening of delicious food, great company and relaxation was capped with door prizes distributed to lucky winners.

L on g- r an ge plan aims to advan c e the bre e d’s lon gtime le ade r s hip pos ition The American Angus Association enjoys a storied history of leaders making important decisions at the right time. Those decisions, repeatedly, are based upon months of indepth planning and thoughtful deliberations.

On Aug. 15-16 the organization’s Board of Directors met in Denver, Colo., to consider goals and strategies for the development of a new Long Range Strategic Plan (LRSP) for the Association.

The overarching objective of the LRSP is to support the mission of the Association to enhance Angus genetics, broaden its influence within the beef industry and expand the market for high-quality Angus beef worldwide.

“This process has been a continuation of the commitment that Angus has made to the industry – to pioneer new opportunities and ultimately build demand for Angus genetics and high-quality beef,” says Allen Moczygemba, Association CEO. The LRSP process began earlier this year and included unprecedented, valuable input from members, commercial cattle producers, feeders, packers, academia and allied-industry professionals to ensure all had a voice in the process. The results of this input revealed a changing cattle business with evolving needs, and the importance of Angus leadership as the industry looks to grow demand and market share.

While the final LRSP will not be unveiled until the National Angus Convention, Nov. 5-7, in Indianapolis, Ind., the Board shares the following five key areas of focus that surfaced through LRSP discussion: Genetics, Commercial Programs, Research Priorities, Product, and Industry Leadership and Education.

The Board also evaluated existing Association programs, and considered strategies for improving and expanding their use and relevance among cattle producers across the industry.

The Association most recently con-

ducted a long-range strategic planning process in 2011. The 2011 plan resulted in facilitating the widespread adoption of genomics technology among Angus and commercial producers; the launching of innovative marketing and informational platforms, such as Angus TV; and the creation of the Education and Culinary Center at Certified Angus Beef’s headquarters in Wooster, Ohio.

The final 2016 LRSP will be unveiled during the Angus Convention, Nov. 5-7, in Indianapolis, Ind.

ANGUS RELEASES WEBSITE REDESIGN

The American Angus Association is proud to debut enhancements to its website, www.angus.org, including a modern and mobile-friendly design, improved navigation menu and prominent news features on the website’s homepage. The changes, which went live Sept. 13, allow users to quickly locate the information and tools they need for herd management and marketing.

As the digital landing page for the American Angus Association, www.angus.org has generated more than 27 million page views throughout fiscal year 2016, and most users spend an average of seven minutes on the website.

A major draw is the Association’s online recordkeeping service, AAA Login, which is now accessible through the red Login button on the top right hand side of the navigation menu. All functionality within AAA Login remains the same.

On the www.angus.org homepage, a top news display prominently features Association news and announcements, and articles from the Angus Media team. Down the page, there’s an updated Angus calendar and event results/reports. Users can also catch up on the latest videos from Angus TV and quickly find a breeder in their area.

Featured websites and sale books are a way for Angus breeders to market their genetics and upcoming sales, and the “Employee Spotlight” area

will introduce the American Angus Association’s dedicated team of employees at the headquarters in Saint Joseph, Mo. The Angus Convention countdown keeps you up-to-date on news surrounding the Angus breed’s highlight event of the year.

Website visitors will also notice an upgrade to the navigation menu, featuring quick links to the Association’s top content in the following categories: management, marketing, sales, news, events, get involved, shop and about. Follow the links along to the top of the site to visit the Association’s entities — the Angus Foundation, Angus Genetics Inc. (AGI), Angus Media, Certified Angus Beef, the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) and the American Angus Auxiliary.

Along with the www.angus.org website updates, AGI launched an expanded online presence. Both seedstock and commercial cattle producers can explore genomic testing options within AGI’s new site, as well as learn how to collect a DNA sample and interpret DNA results.
