Dear Gelbvieh Enthusiasts, The year of 2018 leaves most of us it seems to be of the same sentiment about it. We all are in agreement that it is good to have it behind us. Cattle prices were lower as was grain and oh don’t get me started on the weather. All in all it was a tough year for all. There were some positives though, interest in Gelbvieh cattle in Iowa has kept increasing I feel. This past summer, our Iowa Junior’s hosted the AGJA Corn Fed Classic held in Waterloo, Iowa. Juniors for all across the country brought in the best of the best to put on display with nearly 300 head of cattle. The show brought out local media attention, which helped tell the story of the Gelbvieh breed, and it’s future. Iowa State Fair was the place to be in August where yet again, we as breeders, were able to show cattle producers from the Midwest just what our breed has to offer. Show entries were up this year with breeders from six states. We also had a record number of Junior exhibitors bring back their futurity eligible heifers from the 2018 Gelbvieh Gold Sale. This tells me that our future as a breed is bright! 2019 looks to be a year for us as the Gelbvieh Breeders of Iowa to make further advancement in getting our story out. We have already promoted the breed at the Iowa Corn Belt Cow/Calf Conference in Ottumwa in late January and hope to do more promotion through out the year. It is our job as breeders to help the commercial cattle producers understand all that they have to gain from using Gelbvieh genetics in their herd. It has been an honor to serve as your board president in 2018 and look forward to serving on the board again in 2019. Mark Stock President GBOI
