The forgotten people... THERE are people, unsung champions, who unknown to most people, go about their daily lives contributing to the wellbeing and care of the Community, with no thought of themselves. One such person is Rob Wood, manager of St Mary’s Millennium Centre, who goes to extraordinary lengths to ensure that the “C” in Community stands for something. It is 100 years since the end of “The war to end all Wars” when on November 11th 1918, the armistice was signed. Thanks to Rob, and in conjunction with the “Armed Forces Covenant Trust”, he has applied for and been awarded 8 silhouettes of people / soldiers, the “Forgotten People”. Supported by St Mary’s School, the Clergy of St Mary’s Church and the Royal British Legion ﬂag bearers, these will be displayed in the Church at the remembrance day service on November 11th, taking their place in the pews of St Mary’s, amongst the congregation.

The silhouettes have been kindly donated by the “Armed forces Trust” and will be available for use by the village of West Derby for many years to come, in celebrating and remembering the sacrifices made by so many. The Armed Forces Covenant, is a promise by the nation, ensuring that those who serve, or have served in the armed forces, and their families are treated fairly and honourably. THE health beneﬁts of fresh air, peaceful surroundings and good nourishing food were traditionally prescribed to people feeling under the weather. Hundreds of years ago most people lived off the land, producing food for themselves and others. However, life was far from idyllic because disease and famines could follow poor harvests. There were long periods of lawlessness during the Middle Ages. Like today, some people suffered from stress and anxiety because of the uncertainties and pressures of life. New issues arose during the Industrial Revolution when people were drawn from the countryside into towns and cities to work. Liverpool beneﬁted and the docks grew to cope with more and more trade. Lancashire mill towns expanded as textile production boomed, fuelled by cotton imported through Liverpool. Finished goods

were exported from the port. Constant bustling activity in mills, factories and docks became everyday factors in people’s lives. Most coped but some succumbed to anxiety and mental illness. Before modern medications and therapies, patients were treated in isolation. Hospitals such as Rainhill and Winwick housed many patients until the 1980s when largely replaced by care in the community treatments. A sprawling mansion called Tue Brook Villa claimed to be able to

cure insanity – at a price. John Owen built the private asylum in 1837, the year 18-yearold Queen Victoria came to the throne. The well-proportioned pile (pictured) was set in extensive grounds. An advertisement read: “Erected expressly for the care and cure of those invalids of both sexes whose mental afﬂictions render absence from home desirable and necessary. “This house is in the Italian style of architecture, light and

airy throughout, its various corridors, sitting and bed rooms commanding extensive views from all the windows and from the garden and pleasure grounds. “The internal arrangements are complete, where everything is combined with the kindest care and attention for the restoration of the unhappy invalids. “Mr and Mrs Owen have had nearly 30 years’ experience in the care and treatment of the nervous and those mentally afflicted. “The terms vary according to the circumstances and accommodation required. He was regarded as one of the best teachers at the school, his distinguished presence admired by staff and pupils. Oswald Percival had been head of science at St Bertha’s Academy for longer than anyone could remember. He was certainly there when the Franco Prussian War raged because this was one of his favourite subjects when he was not talking about chemistry. There was an air of the magician about Mr Percival. He was fond of theatrical gestures when conducting experiments and particularly enjoyed creating small explosions and large clouds of smoke. This grabbed the boys’ attention, of course. With a twinkle in his eye he would prepare class for the next nervewracking boom or splatter. There was humour in it as well, sometimes ensuring some luckless pupil would be covered with gunge by the end of the lesson. It was Gumm – nicknamed Pinky - who found the rock. He

had been walking over the grassy banks of the rec, nursing a tooth chipped in a rugger match, when he spotted the rock sticking out of some mud. Carefully wiping the rock down with his sleeve, he was intrigued by the shimmering blue and green veins in the heavy grey slate. “Intriguing,” said Mr Percival, examining the rock at the next lesson. He put the specimen down and picked up a battered book. The boys remained silent in anticipation as he thumbed through the volume, looking quizzically through his pince-nez. Mr Percival took a sip from the bottle of cordial he always kept for lubrication of his vocal chords. “I have not demonstrated alchemy for many years but I believe now is the time,” he pronounced, slamming the book with a flourish. This is an unknown type of rock which I believe may be from a meteorite which has crashed to earth.” This was exciting stuff – the class was gripped, so much so that no-one noticed the glint in Mr Percival’s eye.

Think of the knowledge I may have accrued over centuries.” He turned his attention to the chunk of rock, using a small hammer to chip off a little piece. Reaching for a beaker, the alchemist poured two chemicals

together to create a smoking brew. He placed the lump into the concoction and put his hands around the beaker, muttering strange words. The beaker was then drained, revealing a nugget of pure gold. With a knowing smile, he handed it to Gumm: “Here, get that tooth fixed.” The filling was always a talking point. WHEN revolutionary motorised transport was introduced in the late 19th century a whole industry was created that continues in the UK to this day. Throughout its history change has been a key factor in order to progress, ranging from design and performance to emissions. There continue to be challenges too. The current key ones being the joys of Brexit and concerns about diesel emissions. Since the turn of the millennium the SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) has become increasingly popular thanks mainly to the hugely popular BMW X5; the only luxury SUV for years – the 4x4 Range Rover is in an altogether different league as testified by the Royal Family’s reliance on them. It was therefore time for a new challenger. Enter the Jaguar F Pace... Think of a standard Jaguar XF saloon, raise it to the height of a Land Rover and add a slightly revised backend and All Wheel Drive. Head on it is striking thanks to its massive grille. It’s a good looking, well-rounded, futuristic vehicle and there are some neat touches, shared with other Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) siblings including the rising dial of the 8-speed automatic gearbox and the

electrically operated tow bar. Inside it’s fitted with cream leather and brown wood effect making for pleasant surroundings. An electric cover reveals the panoramic tilting glass roof, which lets huge amounts of light into the cabin; a real difference on a dull day. The 10-way electrically operated front seats are comfortable and my wife does like the fact that the front ones are heated, too. However, once the engine is switched off it forgets that you have put them on and you have to do it again using the touchscreen on the dash. On parking the Jag I forget that I have left the roof tilted and the roofline hides the fact that it is open so I think I’ve shut it until the following morning. It takes me a couple of days to realise that this sunroof also slides. This occurs in many a modern vehicle in contrast to the whole hour I can listen to the radio, with the engine off, in my ageing Ford Fiesta. The model tested is the 2-litre diesel which is delivering around 38mpg. It costs a shade under £50,000. There is plenty of space throughout including a very well sized boot making it a practical proposition for executives and their families. The layout of the electronic speedometer and rev counter is confusing with the rev counter

generally taking centre stage (it seems to change places with the speedo – not sure if my children are to blame for this) and I feel as if I’m losing my marbles... For street cred there are few vehicles that have as much cache as this big cat. It is nice to see that Porsche Cayenne drivers can’t resist double taking as they savour its

Celebrity article – Marty Kristian By Tim Saunders TALENTED Marty Kristian is known the world over for being a founder member of The New Seekers vocal harmony group, which enjoyed enormous worldwide success in the early ‘70s. The New Seekers’ biggest hit was ‘I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing in Perfect Harmony’ which reached number one across the globe, selling in excess of 7.5m copies. The group appeared in front of Her Majesty the Queen at The Royal Command Performance. They represented the UK in the Eurovision song contest in 1972 with their hit ‘Beg Steal Or Borrow’ and came second. Regulars on BBC1 Top of the Pops, The New Seekers were household names, performing on all the variety shows of the day including the legendary Morecambe & Wise Christmas Special. The band toured all over the world and were even invited to sing at President Nixon’s inauguration in America. “We appeared on all the big US TV shows Including the Sonny & Cher show, Ed Sullivan, Andy Williams, Johnny Carson” recalls Marty. They had numerous number 1 and top 10 hits totalling 36 million sales and Marty wrote some album tracks including ‘You Make Me Feel Like a Woman’ and ‘Country Lovin’. After leaving school Marty trained to be

an architect at Melbourne University. “After quitting architecture during the second year of the degree course I spent six months as a draughtsman before embarking on a pop singing solo career. In 1968 I was offered a cruise to England as an entertainer and it was here that I met Keith Potger after the Seekers had disbanded. He asked me to join as a member of the New Seekers.” Marty had always liked painting and drawing and “architecture seemed a good idea because it was both creative and socially useful. But I didn’t really enjoy the course so that when at the end of my first year my mother was taken ill and the bills started piling up it wasn’t a very hard decision to pack it in and take a job”. In the ‘90s he was commissioned to paint a series of murals at Queen Charlotte’s Hospital

Firework safety for pets By Kate Downham – Student Veterinary Care Assistant The ﬁreworks season is upon us and although they’re very pretty and it’s fun for the whole family, our fur babies may not always like this time of year, so we want to help you to help them to minimise any stress that may be caused. Some dogs may enjoy the calm feeling of being able to go somewhere dark and quiet, like a homemade den. Ways to do this could be to cover a table or crate with blankets leaving only a small entrance hole. We also recommend using your TV or radio as background noise, but don’t turn the volume up too much or this could also be stressful! Another way to minimise stress could be to use pheromone support which has been tested and

approved to provide a comforting and safe environment by recreating natural calming pheromones. And don’t forget to keep your pets away from the bangs! Bring cats inside when it gets dark and ideally walk dogs during the day while it’s still light. Ensure that your pets are microchipped in case they get panicked and can’t ﬁnd their way home. If you are at all worried, please speak to your Vet for advice.

Cats of the month – Minkie & Cornflower Minkie (mum) and Cornﬂower (kitten). Minkie is timid and had lived all of her life in a garden in Halewood, giving birth outside in all weathers, until her rescue. Now spayed, micro-chipped, de-ﬂead and wormed, she remains a rather timid cat but in the right home we feel that she will settle down. She has long hair and a beautifully bushy tail. As she has had all of her kittens removed

Dog of the month – Hunter HUNTER is an 18 month old, bouncy Patterdale Terrier, and it’s not often you’ll see a ginger one! He loves to play and has bags of energy, so is looking for a family with an active lifestyle that can keep up with him. He has a sweet and friendly nature and loves to say hello to people when he’s out on walkies. Hunter gets along well with other dogs and seems to enjoy their company very much. He isn’t fully housetrained but he has been toileting on puppy pads, so it shouldn’t take him long to progress. He would beneﬁt from some basic training, as he’s a bright boy. Hunter can live with children aged 16 and over, as he

AFTER a strong pre-season preparation, the team’s start to the season was stalled following a free week and then a void fixture against South Sefton who withdrew from the league at a late stage. This left Alder having to play catch up and their first game was under the floodlights at Walton Hall Park. The newly installed 4G pitch at the Geoffrey Humble Playing Fields hosted this fixture which in the opening minutes saw some quality football played at a fast pace. Although the visitors dominated possession their play lacked penetration. Midway through the half Kieron Ledson opened the scoring when he headed home from a Tom Stewart cross. Then direct from the kick-off Red Rum equalised and that remained the score until the sides went in at half-time. Five minutes after the restart some poor defending from the Croft saw them fail to clear their lines and the hosts took full advantage and took the lead. Play then became scrappy with both sides giving the ball away cheaply. The game looked in danger of just fizzling out when up popped Josh Quarless to equalise on the 80 minute mark. Five minutes later, following a brilliant run by Tom Williams, the prolific JK added to his mounting tally with an unbelievable 25 yard rocket which was worthy of winning any game. The visitors then withstood the late onslaught and saw the game out to move into top spot.

THE 2018-19 season kicked off for West Derby Hockey Club back in September with all 3 teams raring to go. The Men’s 1st XI took on Alderley Edge with the Ladies’ 1st XI up against Liverpool Sefton Ladies’ 4th XI in an exciting local derby. It was a different story for the Men’s 2nd XI with their game at St. Edward’s College cancelled due to a lightning strike, rendering the site unsafe. It’s been a tough start to the season for the Men’s 1st XI, losing out against top level opposition in all of their opening three games. The Ladies have also followed a similar trend though with their two new signings already contributing in the goals

The Men’s 2nd XI have played two games so far, losing out to league favourites Northern Men’s 1st XI before blowing away Bury Men’s 2nd XI 5-0 at home in their last outing. All three teams are looking forward to a busy month of hockey ahead with training taking place as usual at St. Edward’s College every Wednesday.
