Duo’s Marathon effort for charities

Group raises funds for charity at Hope Mountain Hike LOCAL businessman Keith McGowan of Old Swan Fireplace Centre Prescot Road, Old Swan and his partner Debbie Murphy along with four generations of Debbie’s family recently undertook the 12th Annual Hope Mountain Hike to raise funds for the Liverpool Broad Green Heart and Chest Hospital. The group hiked 13 miles
across farmers’ fields in Wrexham, through quarries, woods and a hill known as Cardiac Hill as it is over one mile long. Keith told The LINK: “It was a fantastic day with the great British weather holding out for all the hikers. A big pat on the back to everyone for giving their time, energy and efforts for such a good cause.”

THE Stroke Association holds an annual Know Your Blood Pressure Day each year in April. The campaign is to help people understand the link between high blood pressure and stroke, other risk factors and what people can do to reduce their risk of having a stroke. On April 14 Rotary Liverpool South worked with Liverpool John Moores University and Belle Vale Shopping Centre in Liverpool to carry out blood pressure tests of shoppers during the day. Senior Lecturer Phil Rathe and his team of student nurses from The Student mentoring Service L.J.M.U., Hollie Evans, Danielle Poynter, Hope McNulty and Jade Price carried out the tests. During the day 424 persons were tested, 157 males and 267 females. This was a new record for Rotary Liverpool South in the number of tests carried out.
The age groups of those tested: 72 persons were aged up to 35, 124 persons aged 36 to 55 and 228 persons aged 55 plus. 405 pressure tests were recorded as normal with 19 persons (4.48 per cent) advised to visit their GP, a further reduction in this number from previous years. Rotary Liverpool South would like to thank Denise Griffiths, Centre Administrator, Belle Vale Shopping Centre and her staff for making the day such a success in improving health in South Liverpool.

Judgement day JUDGE Thornyside was feared throughout the courts – not only by the accused but barristers and solicitors as well. He fixed a transgressor with his steely gaze and demolished any excuse or weak explanation with a withering comment. “Mr Simkins please leave this court and return when you have adjusted your apparel,” he once told a particularly unkempt junior counsel. A witness who asked to be allowed home after feeling unwell was told to “go and get your pills and potions”. The judge seemed to know no fear – no matter how grand the personage, he soon cut them down to size. The Earl of Speke, who tried unsuccessfully to argue a point of law, was told to “stick to your billiards and shooting parties”. The Bishop of Bickerstaff shuddered when Judge Thornyside told him: “Please remove your unsightly gaiters before entering my courtroom.” Despite his fearsome reputation, the judge was respected because of his fair and measured judgements. He was as fearsome as a wolfhound in his gown and full-bottomed wig. Even without the regalia he was a scary presence. Out of court, Judge Thornyside had a weakness. The lawyer became
emotional at the sight of delicate forms and fresh blooms. He would silently gaze at their beauty, going into a trance as his eyes greedily took in each delicate curve. The judge kept several which were very special to him in a secret lair away from prying eyes. His passion for orchids was well known but no-one knew how he brought his blooms to perfection. Even Beatrice, his wife, and only son Percy knew little of the secrets jealously guarded at the end of their large garden. The glass houses and potting sheds were off limits. Judge Thornyside could be rather dismissive of his son and heir, a spotty youth of 18.

Strange Tale – By Anton Valdemart Percy shared his father’s love of orchids but the two had very different tastes. While his father was devoted to tropical varieties, Percy’s ambition was to be an expert on every type. The annual show of the Orchid Society was always keenly anticipated – as were the Judge Thornyside’s entries each year. The judge played no part in the running of the respected society, founded some years earlier in 1890. The hothouse was heavy with the scent of orchids on the show’s opening day. Rows of blooms stood on wooden trestle tables. Judge Thornyside spluttered under his breath when the judges were announced – to his amazement, one was Percy. “He is our youngest-ever adjudicator,” announced Miss Rose, the society secretary. Percy and his fellow judges walked gravely around the orchids, pausing at each, making notes and occasionally quietly exchanging a few words. Stopping next to a shocking pink specimen submitted by Judge Thornyside, Percy grimaced mockingly and made a stinging comment to his fellow judges. Up the junction By Stephen Guy
THE internal combustion engine started as a novelty in the 1880s but transformed transport within 40 years. Motors took over from horses and Britain’s roads had to change to accommodate the new arrivals. Just as the railways replaced stage coaches for long distance journeys, motor vehicles took over from horse-drawn carts and carriages – a process taking almost a century to complete. Cars and trucks largely replaced horse transport by the 1930s. Delivery vehicles such as milk carts and coal waggons – along with hand carts - continued until the 1970s. They still linger on in some parts of the country.
New roads needed more skilled engineers and builders. By-passes were designed to take traffic away from built-up areas – a process continuing today. Before the 18th century there were no real roads, just uneven tracks meandering around obstacles including swamps and steep hills. Pioneers such as John McAdam and Thomas Telford built wellsurfaced roads, allowing mail coaches to travel smoothly. Although there were few cars on the roads, planners knew that numbers would grow. Visionary schemes were devised to cope with future expansion. Queens Drive began as a tree-lined boulevard in Edwardian
times. It took about 20 years to complete and remains Liverpool’s ring road. A rare view (pictured) shows an unrecognisable Jolly Miller junction before it was obliterated when Queens Drive was constructed. The 1906 tinted postcard is captioned Moss Lane Corner. Before Queens Drive was built along the line of the original country lanes, the stretch between Mill and Derby Lanes was called Moss Lane. To the south was Black Horse Lane and to the north Lark Hill Lane. The view looks north towards Walton, with Mill Lane going towards West Derby Village on the right. Holly Lodge
house stands behind trees in the distance. Two boys on bikes are next to a drinking fountain, illuminated by a gas lamp, which stood in the middle of the road. The big mansion on the right is Barnfield, built by wealthy lawyer Thomas Toulmin around 1828. Barnfield was demolished in the 1930s to improve the junction – the Jolly Miller was built on part of the site. A few things to bear in mind if you regularly eat fast food DO you eat fast food? I hardly eat it these days for the main reason that my stomach can’t handle it. I might have an occasional McDonald’s, but otherwise, that’s it. Years ago, I would to go to the chippy every now and again but I don’t seem to be able to handle it now Anyway, the reason I ask is that people still like to eat fast food. Some people will eat it every now and again and some people will eat it all the time. The thing is, though, if you are eating it all the time then there are some things that you need to wary of: n Cost – eating fast food can be expensive. It’s probably about £5 for a main meal now. If you’re having fast food regularly, and

even feeding the whole family with it, the cost can sure add up. I always try and educate my clients about nutrition and trying to help them have the best diet possible at the cheapest cost. If you are beginning to exercise or have a healthier diet then you’ll probably need to increase your protein intake. Ultimately, you need to work around £1 for 30 grams of protein. A chicken breast or a tin of tuna is about 25-30g of Protein, and would cost about £1-£2. n Fast food can contain trans fats (invisible fats) which are high in calories and can contribute towards artery disease, diabetes and other things. Also, you’re probably not getting quality protein, fibre or vitamins etc from the meal. n The Body Coach, Gino d’Campo, Jamie Oliver etc, are always demonstrating in the media that you can cook great meals which aren’t too expensive and will give you all the nutrients you need. Try and check them
out. A lot of the meals can be cooked around in 15-20 minutes. Personally, I like cooking and the more I’ve cooked, the better I’ve become at it. n Time can be an issue with trying to cook meals, either for yourself or family, and meal prepping can help you overcome this. If you are going to meal prep, a Sunday is the best day. Cook some

Woolton in Bloom NHS fighting Insomnia Open Gardens THIS year’s open gardens event will take place on Sunday 8th July at 12pm to 5pm and will include a wide range, from a compact terrace garden to an expansive walled garden as well as the Bishops’ Lodge famous gardens. Woolton in Bloom has been transforming the village with beautiful floral displays since the beginning of the century. All of our work is carried out by our hard working volunteers and funded by donations and fundraising activities. We were gold medal winners in the RHS ‘Champion of Champions 2014’ Refreshments will be available, thanks to Woolton WI at the Bishops Lodge. There will also be a number of stalls for you to browse, including crafts by local artists and charities. We are also hoping to keep you entertained with local choirs. All proceeds to go to planting and maintenance of the village floral displays, and Woolton WI.

Write away your worries If you tend to lie in bed thinking about everything you have to do tomorrow, set aside time before bedtime to make plans for the next day. 10. A CHOIR of 50 years old has had a new lease of life as a renowned conductor of national standing has taken over the helm. Thirty-strong Liverpool Renaissance Singers, a choir specialising in the stunning music of 1500 to 1600, was accidentally taken over by their new conductor when the auditioned candidate failed to secure citizenship for the UK. Deborah Catterall, who was one of the directors of the magnificent National Youth Choirs of Great Britain, offered to help for a term to stem the crisis. The official candidate never arrived and so Deborah is still leading the choir. After a successful year of a new and vibrant way of singing, a choir member said: “Deborah has made the choir come alive and we love the music.” Their previous and esteemed founder conductor, Morris
Davies, steered the choir for 50 years, introducing Liverpool and beyond to the music of Tallis, Byrd, Palestrina and other composers of so long ago, but whose music is ethereal and sumptuous. The new era brings a new energy and a new drive to bring the music to younger and bigger audiences. LRS rehearse at Liverpool University Music department and often perform at the Anglican cathedral, where the acoustic is, as one audience member said: “Like being in heaven. I would encourage everyone to come and hear this choir.”

Liverpool’s tribute to Sir Ken Dodd
MORE than 800 tributes which were written in a Book of Condolence to Sir Ken Dodd have been handed to his widow. Following Sir Ken’s death in March people from the city and around the world as far as Australia, Canada, USA, Spain and France visited Liverpool Town Hall to write their message. The book, which also contains photos of Sir Ken, has been specially bound and presented to Lady Anne Dodd by Councillor Malcolm Kennedy.

Shogun is up for any challenge By Tim Saunders
WHEN travelling with three young children and lots of luggage a large vehicle is an absolute necessity and the heavy duty long wheelbase Mitsubishi Shogun is well suited to such a challenge. This well-built vehicle has plenty of space and will put up with pretty much anything thrown at it. And that includes little Henry Saunders (21 months) insisting on pretending to drive it every time we park. We all like the third row of seats tucked away in the floor of the boot; great for additional passengers or a change of scene for the children. To put it through its paces we drive to Ringwood, the Isle of Wight and London. For all of these journeys we take in the usual dull A-roads and motorways where it cruises happily at 70mph. At Ringwood we visit a farm and this allows us to experience the Shogun’s abilities on farmland. It easily tackles slippery surfaces, mud and gravel. Ruts and speed bumps see the occupants bouncing all over the place at speed due to the hard suspension. “It’s struggling; it seems to be in the wrong gear,” says Caroline when the Shogun is faced with really steep inclines on the Isle of Wight. I disagree because we are travelling at 30mph and it is an automatic so the choice of gear is not my fault. It quickly becomes
clear though that at low speed there is a noticeable vibration from the 3.2-litre diesel unit, throughout the entire cabin as well as that chugging sound associated with diesels of the past. At faster speeds it is quieter. I’ve known the Shogun since I was a lad. The father of a friend of mine owned a short wheel base version and my friend (aged 11) was allowed to drive it across their land. What I do notice is that there is very little change in the Shogun, for which I take my hat off to Mitsubishi. Much like the Land Rover Defender didn’t change externally in its lifetime, neither it seems has the Shogun apart from of course all the technology inside. Today’s Shogun is fitted with everything from a sat-nav (the most complicated I have come across and I
can’t operate it!), a reversing camera, air bags, air conditioning, as well as power folding wing mirrors. The automatic gearbox makes for lazy driving and my only complaint is that when I rest my right arm on the door, over a prolonged period, it starts to ache due to a lack of padding. I like the large glass electric tilt/slide sunroof and the high up driving position provides a good view of the road ahead allowing passengers to see things they wouldn’t usually such as good views into people’s gardens and houses. The times I have heard Caroline, particularly, say: “I didn’t know that was there.” The rear seats allow for different set ups. So for instance if there are three passengers one might choose to sit on the middle seat and then the rest of the seats can be folded away and pushed forward. Schools sign up to prevent skin cancer EVERY primary school in the Liverpool postcode area is signing up to a scheme which aims to protect young people from getting skin cancer in later life. Malignant melanoma is now the second most common cancer among 15 to 25 year olds, with the number of people
being diagnosed in Liverpool doubling from 2001 to 2014. As part of the scheme all schools will commit to the use of sunscreen, hats and role models to promote their use, as well as providing shady outdoor areas and lessons on staying safe in the sun.

A few fashion ideas for your summer holiday HEY guys and welcome to June’s Life ‘n’ Style. I hope everyone is good and loving the start of the summer. I’ve not long got back from holidaying in Tenerife. It’s a place I like to visit each year but it was the first time I stayed at The Gran Melia Hotel. I have got to say that it’s one of the nicest hotels I have ever stayed in. The hotel was out of this world with some amazing views, the only down side for me was where it’s positioned. It was a little windier than normal and in the middle of nowhere but ideal for couples or people with small children who want to just stay in the complex. There are a number of restaurants you can choose to dine in of an evening – Italian, Japanese, seafood etc so there is something for everyone and the staff really look after you. Looking after your Dog of the month – Sheila pets this summer By Alice Lawson, Veterinary Surgeon at The Vet Liverpool
ALL animals (and people!) can be affected by the hot weather. It’s important to keep an eye on your dogs, cats and rabbits this summer. Heat Stroke Heat stroke can affect all your beloved pets, but dogs seem to be more susceptible to it, in particular short nosed breeds (like pugs, French bulldogs), black or thick coated dogs. We recommend only exercising dogs in the morning or late evening when the temperature is lower. Dogs can only get rid of heat by panting, so other things to do to help them is provide a paddling pool, shade and cool
water. You can even freeze some of their favourite treats and add ice cubes to their water! You can buy “cooling” jackets to put on dogs that keep them cool. Rabbits in hutches should be kept in the shade, or if allowed free-roam there should be shady places for them to hide and plenty of water sources. You should never leave your pet in the car during the summer – even temperatures on cool days can soar in cars and can make your pets seriously ill.
Cat of the month – Jaz THIS beautiful lady was found by one of our volunteers in December. She was severely underweight; so much so that she was too weak to walk. So, she was brought here into our care and over the last couple of months she has put on almost 2kg and is now fighting fit. She’s around maybe 8 - 10 years old and is very friendly and affectionate. Celebrity article – Hannah Gordon By Tim Saunders HANNAH Campbell Grant Gordon was born in Newhaven, Edinburgh in April 1941. Blessed with such well-known Scottish names you could be forgiven for thinking she has an association with soup, whisky or indeed gin, but none of it. Hannah was only nine years old when her mother died of a heart attack and two years later, after a long illness, her father died. Hannah was sent to live with a bachelor uncle who sent her off to St. Dennis School for Girls, a boarding school in Edinburgh, now closed. She remained there until she was 18. Hannah always wanted to go to university but in order to do so required two lowers and three highers, equivalent to our O and A levels. Not liking science and failing maths scuppered her chances. She took elocution lessons and threw herself into theatre. “I took a chance and went to drama college and don’t regret a minute of it.”
She trained at the Glasgow College of Music and Art and was awarded the James Bridie Gold Medal in 1962. Her early stage career included performances at the Repertory Theatre in Dundee and the Glasgow Citizens’ Theatre. “I used to do a huge number of plays spread over a few months but it was really enjoyable.” She made her first TV appearance in 1965 on Johnson Over Jordan and also guest starred in Dr. Who the same year. Hannah met her first husband, cinematographer Norman Warwick, on the set of Spring and
Port Wine in 1969. He died in 1984 and they have a son, Ben Warwick, who is also an actor. Hannah is now married to classical musician Robert Leighton. She still has a slight Scottish burr even after living in Surrey for over 40 years. “I came to London in the 1970s because the big work was here. I used to alternate between the television and the stage.” She is undeniably an extremely successful actress on both stage and screen. Her films include Watership Down and The Elephant Man.
However, she is perhaps best known for her television roles in Upstairs Downstairs, My Wife Next Door, Midsomer Murders and Watercolour Challenge (the Channel 4 art competition she hosted for three series in 1998) and the final episode of hit BBC comedy One Foot in the Grave. She regularly narrates for the radio but her true love is theatre. “Opening nights are fantastic – such a sensation. They can also be horrendous though – you want the floor to open up. A good audience is such a joy to work with but a poor one is a nightmare.” Not only does an actor or actress have to learn their lines off by heart they have to overcome certain pitfalls suggests Hannah. “For a performer there are two dangers – not knowing your lines well enough and knowing them too well because you will make a mistake”. “The great thing about this profession is that you never know what is going to happen next. One day the phone rings and it changes your whole life.”

South Liverpool clinch title By Jim Stanway SOUTH Liverpool FC clinched the West Cheshire League First Division title after defeating their nearest rivals Ashville 3-2 and then, two days later, Ashville losing again to last season’s champions Newton, which meant it was then mathematically impossible for any team to catch South. South won their last four matches of the season while all their nearest rivals were dropping points, proving that their vastly experienced squad showed their mettle during the busy April period. A decisive 3-0 win at Newton with two excellent goals from striker Alex Woodcock and one from full back Paul Lundon was reinforced two days later by the 3-2 win at Ashville with two goals from midfielder Fraser Ablett and another from Paul Lundon. Liverpool Sefton Hockey – league winners, leadership awards and London visitors ... By Jen Radcliffe WE’VE finished another season with something to celebrate in the men’s section, this time courtesy of the M2s. They won the league outright with three games to spare and a 12 point cushion over second place. They conceded 19 fewer goals than the next best defensive record and hammered home a staggering 74 goals. They will now head up to NW Div 3 South. Not to be left out, the women’s section had something to celebrate courtesy of the W3s. They faced Formby in terrible conditions, held on after the opposition pulled back a 2-0 deficit and scored in the last 10 seconds to win the League Plate. They keep the silverware in the club as they take it from last year’s winners the W4s. Liverpool Sefton has been busy helping to strengthen the future of hockey in Liverpool as we ran
an England Hockey In2Hockey Leadership course. We had six keen youngsters learn about coaching, umpiring, managing and competitions. They are now ready to head out to their schools and other junior teams to help coaches with session planning, execution and matches. They were helped on the
day by 2017’s England Hockey Coach of the Year, James Cunliffe, National League umpire, Jen Ratcliffe and President of LSHC, Bill Chambers. We also welcomed London Royals, who are the UK’s first open and largest Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBTQ+) Hockey Club. The Royals were on tour and
stopped by Liverpool College to play a friendly game against some of our players. The sun came out to ensure that playing conditions were exactly what we wanted for a mid-April mixed match and the game evolved from a structured 70 minutes to fun mini challenges and games.

Tour joy for West Derby hockey By Mark Williams FOLLOWING a turbulent season a team from the men’s section entered into the Annual Tour at Formby Hockey Club. With an opening match win the men strung together a great tournament, beating teams from several leagues higher in the process. The tournament boiled down to a penalty flick shootout for a spot in the plate final which saw the men edge out tournament favourites The FOG (Formby Veterans) after the heroics of goalkeeper Will Gregg. The final was a cagey affair which eventually ended in a 1-0 win to West Derby following a cool reverse stick finish from club Vice Chairman Joe O’Riley. Over the past few weeks the club has been involved in a busy summer programme including the annual Timperley Hockey Club Men’s tournament which saw West Derby finish as semi-finalists

First season success as Alder FC finish third By Peter Harrison
IN their first season in the Premier Division of the Liverpool Premier League, Alder FC have finished third in the table narrowly missing out on the runners-up spot. After a disappointing semifinal defeat to Custys the team faced a daunting set of fixtures in their finale to the season. However, they picked themselves up and went on a five-game unbeaten run to secure maximum points. Included in this run was a 4-2 win against APH, a 2-0 defeat of Old Xavs, with Taylor Hill scoring a powerful first goal after a mazy run, and a 3-2 defeat of old rivals Waterloo Dock. Next came East Villa, who finished runners up, and a 2-0 victory with Alex Gofton grabbing a brace and finishing the season with 14 goals. The final fixture of the season saw a 8-0 demolition of Waterloo GSOB with top marksman Kyle Mulby scoring a remarkable six goals to finish his tally for the season with 23 strikes. With Peter Moore finishing the season with 18 goals the team boasted a powerful attacking option. The lads will be looking forward to hopefully another successful season under the stewardship of manager Mark Maddison and assistant Jack Ellis.
Centre stage for learning disabilities WORK has started on a Liverpool care hub to help give people more support to live within their local community. Besford House in Belle Vale has been granted £850,000 to create modern accommodation
