A Fixed Penalty Notice for dog fouling is £80.00 and Kingdoms cleansing enforcement officers are covering the city’s hotspots. For dog owners looking to avoid these costly fines, carrying a doggie bag with you is a must and keeping control of your dog so you can check in case they make a mess.

Offenders are issued these fines when enforcement officers see the dog fouling and their owner actively walking away. It is the responsibility of the dog owner or the person in charge of the dog to clear up any ‘mess’ left by their dog. The regulations state that being unaware that the dog has fouled, or not having a suitable means of removing it, is not a reasonable excuse for failing to clean up after a dog.

Fines can also be issued if owners pick up their dogs

business with a bag, but leave the bag on a tree, fence or in a public place. Doggie bags must be placed in a bin or taken home with you to dispose of.

It’s important to keep parks and public places free from doggie doodoo because it’s nonbiodegradable and has lots of very harmful bacteria. It has been estimated that a single gram of dog waste can contain 23 million coliform bacteria, which causes cramps, diarrhoea, intestinal illness, and serious kidney disorders in humans.

James Noakes said: “For dog owners who fail to remove their dogs mess, the Kingdom officers will be around parks and other hot spot areas issuing fixed penalty notices. If you’d rather not receive an £80 charge, please pick up after your pet and keep our city clean.”

Maureen Jones of Gateacre, recently came along to demonstrate the most fascinating art of making handbags out of supermarket plastic carrier bags for a charity craft/ supper evening at the home of Anita and Alan Dansky of Childwall, in aid of ‘The Friends Of Long Lane Jewish Cemetery’. There was also a raffle which was won by Sandra Ellenbogan and Hilary Rosenthal. Maureen also makes a lot of other things herself by either crocheting, sewing or knitting, in between doing ballroom/sequence dancing with her husband Cedric.

Hasn’t it been amazing.

Let’s hope that it stays with us during the school holidays.

There is so much you can do with the kids when the weather is good and of course with all the wonderful parks in Liverpool it doesn’t have to cost a fortune.

When I was a kid we used to love going to the park with a picnic. It was a day out! Mind you, living on the Dock Road with a waste ground to play on, going to the park was a luxury.

But I think it still is.

As much as kids love computers and toys, they also love the freedom of running around, feeding the ducks, being out in the open and us spending time with them.

While I am on about things to do, check out our What’s On Section, there’s always lots going on.

Whatever you have got planned, have a great July.

Castle hosts first food festival PREPARATIONS are well under way for the Great British Food Festival taking place for the first time in the grounds of the stunning Bodelwyddan Castle, North Wales, over the weekend of June 30 and July 1.

Over 100 different traders will be in attendance, amongst them artisan food producers and street food vendors will be busy making, preserving, baking and packing, jams, cakes, cheese, pates and lots of other tasty treats! Along with food and drink producers there will be a marquee full of craft and gift stalls, fantastic chef demos, foodie talks, men vs food competitions and live music.

Dan Maycock, one of the organisers, said: “We have got a great mix of local produce and best of British, coming from further afield. On the hot food front you will be able to try anything from traditional hog roast to Vietnamese and Mexican dishes, so hopefully something for all tastes!”

Gift to the people

By Stephen Guy, West Derby Society THE wealthy benefactor died on the day his generous bequest to the people was due to be opened by the Mayor of Liverpool.

Tragically it was also the golden wedding day of 80-year-old William Cliff who was struck down with pneumonia and the ceremony postponed until after the funeral.

The five-acre William Cliff Recreation Ground, off Mill Lane, stands as a memorial to someone who donated large amounts of money to benefit the public.

To advertise see page four William lived at Claremont (now flats), a mansion in Sandforth Road– the recreation ground was adjacent to his home.

The Liverpool Mercury reported on 2 June 1891, the day he died: “We learn with regret that Mr William Cliff, whose benefactions to the charitable institutions of Liverpool have been numerous, is lying dangerously ill at Claremont.

“Mr Cliff caught a cold which has provoked an attack of pneumonia and Dr Glynn considers the case a serious one.

“The Mayor had arranged to open today a recreation ground at West Derby, the gift of Mr Cliff, but the sudden illness of the donor had necessitated a postponement of the ceremony.”

Large numbers of people lined the two-mile route of the funeral cortege from Claremont to St Anne Stanley.

After the ceremony, featuring moving tributes, William was laid to rest in the family vault at St Anne’s.

His many good works included building the Gordon Memorial Boys’ Institute in Stanley Rd, Liverpool, and

contributing to the Mariners’ Home, Egremont.

The Gordon Institute opening ceremony was reported in the Mercury in December 1886.

The brick and terracotta Dutch-style building provided school-leavers with technical education combined with mental and physical training.

“The social side has not been forgotten and ample provision has been made for concerts and entertainments of various kinds.”

William’s name was “a household word in connection with all works tending to ameliorate the condition of the working classes,” the report added.

He was chairman of the West India and Pacific Steamship Company and had a ship named after him.

Lloyd’s List reported in August 1888 that the 3,400-ton, steel screw steamship William Cliff had been launched in Glasgow. n Join the West Derby Society at West Derby Courthouse open 2pm to 4 pm most Sundays April to October, admission free.

Celebrity article – Sheridan Smith

By Tim Saunders BAFTA and Olivier award winning actress Sheridan Smith now has a record deal.

The star of stage and screen signed the recording contract with East West Records, which is owned by Warner Music and is home to such names as Jools Holland, Robert Plant and Bette Midler.

“It has been an ambition since a child to record my own album so I’m incredibly excited to be recording some of my favourite songs,” she said in a statement.

Sheridan comes from a musical family. Her great-greatgrandfather Benjamin Doubleday, a respected banjo player in Yorkshire, later played as a trio with his daughters.

Performing since she was a child, Sheridan sang alongside her parents Colin and Marilyn, who performed as country music duo The Daltons.

They toured the working men’s clubs near their home in north Lincolnshire. Her father died in 2016, aged 80, having lost his battle against cancer.

That year Sheridan pulled out of an appearance at the Royal Variety Performance and took time off.

In 2015 she received an OBE for services to drama, awarded

by Prince William.

Though she never trained at drama school, between 1995 and 2001 Sheridan was a member of the National Youth Music Theatre, performing lead roles in productions including Into the Woods and Pendragon.

She made her West End debut in a National Youth Music Theatre production of Bugsy Malone and has performed in musicals Little Shop of Horrors and Funny Girl.

She won two Laurence Olivier Awards for Best Actress in a Musical as Elle Woods in Legally Blonde in 2011 and Best Performance in a Supporting Role as Doris in a revival of the play Flare Path in 2012.

Recently she has been nominated for the Best Actress in a Musical award for her work in Funny Girl.

Her first taste of fame came in 1999 when she played Emma, Ralf Little’s girlfriend, in hit TV comedy The Royle Family alongside Ricky Tomlinson, Sue

Johnston and the late Caroline Aherne.

Two years later she could be found playing Janet in the long-running series Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps until her departure from the show in 2009.

There have been a great many other projects ranging from an episode of ITV’s The Royal to The Lenny Henry Show. She featured as Rudi in the second and third series of the BBC Three sitcom Gavin & Stacey and guest-starred in the Christmas 2008 episode of Lark Rise to Candleford.

Her appearance in The Moorside, which chronicled the notorious kidnapping of nine year old Shannon Matthews in 2008, saw Sheridan pile on the pounds for her role as Julie – and then she had to lose it for future roles.

In 2014, she appeared in the ITV crime drama The Widower as the first wife of serial killer Malcolm Webster.

Later that year, she featured in the series Who Do You Think You Are and played Cilla Black in the three-part ITV drama series Cilla.

Squelching and squirting

ADAM was worn out – up at dawn every day except Sunday, working himself to death for a pittance – but there was nowhere else to go.

The Killjoys had him in their power and there seemed no escape.

“What do you mean, you want a holiday?” was the reaction when Adam said he wished to visit his sister in Southport.

“You had one three years ago!”

Captain Killjoy walked over to the window and made a sweeping gesture across the meadows of Bull Farm, pointing at individual cows and reciting milk yields.

“You can’t leave me and Mrs Killjoy to cope with the herd. Each one of those fine animals depends on you.”

Adam insisted and got his holiday but at a cost. After his week’s break the farm was in disarray – just as it had been the last time.

Village, was hired – he had his own ideas about cow keeping.

The herd was upset because their routine had been disturbed – they were producing less milk.

Some of the bigger farms were introducing milking machines but Adam still did it by hand.

He wore a traditional smock to protect his clothing and carried the milk in pails using a wooden yoke across his shoulders.

Then the thunderstorm struck.

Adam was preparing to bring the cows in when huge clouds gathered and blocked out the summer sun.

The air went green, lightning lit up the summer sky followed by the roar of thunder sounding like a terrifying fusillade of cannons.

Rain cascaded down in torrents as Adam and 30 frightened cows squelched their way across waterlogged meadows to the milking shed.

Adam calmed them down and soon milk was squirting into pails, guided by his deft fingers.

The rain cleared and the sun came out and shortly the cows were back munching in the meadow.

Adam took his afternoon nap in the straw, a half-empty glass of warm milk by his side. He loved the peace and quiet of solitude.

He dreamt his days of toil were over: he was rounding up the cattle when a beautiful young woman came into view.

Smiling radiantly, she cheerfully demonstrated her milking skills.

Adam was captivated by her shimmering red hair flowing over her shoulders as she filled pail after pail.

When the work was done they danced together to mysterious music played on the pipes of Pan in a woodland clearing. Heavenly music filled the air.

“Wake up!” growled a gruff voice. “After all your moaning I’ve got you an assistant,” said Captain Killjoy.

Adam rubbed his eyes as a vision with red hair came into focus – it was Cluttock’s sister Veronica. His dream had come true – she was a brilliant milker.

Veronica was also a talented talker who went on endlessly with all manner of stories and tales.

A sprint finish, which will come to an end in front of the Royal Albert Dock, will determine the sought-after podium places for one of the toughest endurance challenges on the planet.

To celebrate the return of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race there’ll be performances and activities on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th July.

REVELLERS planning nights out to watch the 2018 World Cup are being warned their night could be cut short if they get too drunk.

Drink Less Enjoy More highlights that bar staff may refuse to serve them if they have had too much alcohol, as well as

encouraging people to cut back on how much they drink at home before going out.

It is expected venues around Merseyside will be busier when key matches are being played during the tournament, which runs until the final on Sunday 15th July.

Sugar Tax YOU may recall that a few weeks ago I wrote an article in the LINK about sugar tax being put on drinks (I also put this on social media).

A day or two later there were calls in the local media about putting a sugar tax on food.

The main reason for this is that diabetes and obesity are spiralling out of control and I was shocked to read that there are now up to 135 new amputations each week that are related to diabetes.

In fact, diabetes is now apparently costing the NHS £14billion a year (or £1million every hour).

I do wonder what the problem is though - is it lack of knowledge; food industry advertising; stress etc.??

The threat of having a body part amputated should be more than enough to change attitudes towards food and I now point this out to all my clients.

You have to be really careful when buying food and always check the labels.

If you are looking to add more protein into your diet and that protein source comes in a packet, or packaging, then it’s likely that sugar has been added to it.

A couple of snacks and then maybe one or two cans of soda (which we can all do,

especially if the weather is nice) then all of a sudden we’re taking in about 100 grams of sugar a day, which is well above the recommended daily intake Here are some points which, in my personal opinion, the government should consider to help end this crisis: n The public should be made aware that there is no biological need or nutritional value for added sugar. n Packaging should clearly state added and

Ideas for the amazing weather we’re having HEY guys and welcome to July’s issue of Life ‘n’ Style.

How amazing has our summer been so far??? It’s like being on holiday every day! I just hope it continues through July and August as I am in the middle of moving to a new house and want to organise a few barbecues and house warming parties.

Until then though all our family socialising has been taking place over at my mum’s.

As a little early birthday present I bought her this Coral Bay Multi-Functional Sun Lounger Set from www.very.co.uk.

Her garden looks like Nikki Beach! The cushions are so luxurious and comfortable we are all fighting over who’s turn it is to sunbathe on them. Definitely a summer must have for any garden days/nights.

I have had a lot of lovely comments over my recent outfits whilst I have been out and

about lately.

I have found this amazing shop on Instagram called Trussella’s Boutique. They don’t have a website at the moment but you can find them on insta @trussella_boutique.

Everyone is loving their outfits so much that my aunty from Australia has been getting a few of her friends asking her to pick some things up for them while she is home.

I love finding little places like this with oneoff pieces with so much to choose from.

This is the ‘Roxy’ lounge set which I have in blue but it is available in other colours. This is so comfy and can be dressed up with wedges if you are going out for tea or with sliders if you wanted to go for a casual look.

This is priced at £50 and is perfect for any age range. I wore mine last week to go shopping and at least 10 people stopped me asking where it was from.

Another outfit I have worn lately and got tons of compliments is this Missoni inspired suit. There are a few different styles in this range and are about £90 for the suit.

They have kaftans, short and top sets and dresses. I will be uploading a few different pieces on my social media and blog so keep your eye out.

This is my fav one, though, it’s going to be one of those suits that I know I will get out

year after year.

The tones are gorgeous and again this is another comfy number. Ideal to travel in if you are going on holiday or again dress up of an evening for dinner or down of a daytime.

A classic Italian tiramisu recipe suitable for all ages ‘TIRAMISU’ actually translates to ‘pick me up’, due to the sugar and caffeine in the recipe.

And did you know that most Italians don’t even add alcohol to the recipe? With or without, it remains just as delicious and makes it great for the whole family.

This traditional Italian soft cake recipe has come from our chef Antonella who runs cookery holidays in Veneto, Italy. The region is home to famous towns such as Venice and Verona. Never has ‘la vita’ been so ‘dolce’.

Serves: 6 Ingredients n Three large eggs, separated n Three tbsp fine sugar n 250g mascarpone cheese n Two tbsp of a coffee liqueur or masala n 500ml coffee n 200g lady finger biscuits n Cocoa powder

Method With an electric mixer, beat the egg yolks and sugar until the mixture is thick and pale.

Add the mascarpone and keep whisking. Mix in the coffee liqueur and set aside.

In a large bowl, whisk the egg whites and a pinch of salt until firm.

Using a spatula, gently fold them into the mascarpone mixture.

Place the cold coffee in a shallow bowl. Dip the biscuits in the coffee then place them in the serving dish in a single layer.

Pour the mascarpone mixture on top and repeat the process until all biscuits have been used.

The last layer of the tiramisu is a layer of the mascarpone mixture.

Cover the dish with cling film and chill for a few hours.

Before serving, dust the tiramisu with cocoa powder or freshly grated chocolate. The end result is a soft, creamy dessert to be eaten

with a spoon.

Drink enough water Heatwave: how to during the summer cope in hot weather WITH summer now in full swing and the weather continuing to get warmer it’s vital to ensure we drink enough water.

Babies, children and the elderly are more at risk of dehydration and if it isn’t treated it can become a serious problem.

Symptoms of dehydration: n Feeling thirsty. n Dark yellow and strong smelling pee. n Feeling dizzy or light-headed. n Feeling tired. n Dry mouth, lips and eyes. n Peeing little, and fewer than four times a day.

Dehydration can happen more easily if you have: n Diabetes. n Vomiting or diarrhoea. n Been in the sun too long (heatstroke) n Drunk too much alcohol. n Sweated too much after exercising. n A high temperature of 38C or more.

MOST of us welcome hot weather, but when it’s too hot for too long there are health risks.

If a heatwave hits this summer, make sure the hot weather doesn’t harm you or anyone you know.

n Been taking medicines that make you pee more (diuretics) Carers should also be making sure someone drinks enough.

To help them: n Make sure they drink during mealtimes. n Make drinking a social thing, like “having a cup of tea”. n Offer them food with a high water content – for example soups, ice cream or jellies, or fruits like melon.

The main risks posed by a heatwave are: n Dehydration. n Overheating, which can make symptoms worse for people who already have problems with their heart or breathing. n Heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

Who is most at risk?

A heatwave can affect anyone, but the most vulnerable people are:

n Older people, especially those over 75. n Babies and young children. n People with a serious chronic condition, especially heart or breathing problems. n People with mobility problems – for example, people with Parkinson’s disease or who have had a stroke. n People with serious mental health problems. n People on certain medications, including those that affect sweating and temperature control. n People who misuse alcohol or drugs. n People who are physically active – for example, labourers or those doing sports.

Look after your pets’ teeth to avoid problems

YOU may not realise how important dental care is in your pets, but we see so many problems that could be avoided if you take care of your dog’s and cat’s teeth!

Animals’ mouths are full of bacteria, and because they can’t brush their own teeth, infection gets under the gum and causes

inflammation (gingivitis) and dental disease (periodontitis).

Dogs and cats are very good at hiding pain and discomfort, we have known pets to eat “normally” with very severe dental disease.

This is why it’s so important for us as owners to help them by checking and treating them.

Ways you can help your pet: Tooth brushing: there are lots of resources available to teach

you how to brush your dog’s and cat’s teeth. It is important to use a pet-friendly toothpaste as some of the chemicals in human toothpaste can be harmful. Daily brushing reduces the risk of dental disease.

Dental checks: our veterinary nurses perform free dental checks on cats and dogs. They can assess the teeth and advise if further treatment is needed.

Scale and polish: just like in people, we can perform regular professional cleans. You pet would have a short anaesthetic and we remove all the bacteria that is waiting to cause damage Dental extractions: in some cases we need to remove painful or damaged teeth. This is really well tolerated and often our patients go home and eat straight away!

He is a spectacular golden oldie who finds himself looking for a new retirement home. His owner could no longer care for him so this laid back lad is hoping to find a new best pal.

Max is mostly deaf these days, despite those enormous ears!

Max is house trained and is fine around children aged eight and above.

Tackling the topic of tyres

TYRES are a boring subject but I have been forced to research into them on my wife’s behalf.

She is one of those people who does not recognise different makes of cars and has even less idea about tyres. After noticing tyre wear on her car I have found out more about these bits of rubber.

A little over a year ago when Caroline purchased her 2002 Vauxhall Corsa its tyres were already showing signs of wear and over the last 12 months the cracks in the sidewalls of all four tyres have become ever more prominent.

Such cracks occur because over time the oils and chemicals in the rubber compound, that keeps the tyre intact, gradually evaporate or break down due to over exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays.

“They’ve probably been on the car since it was new,” I said to Caroline. After all it has only covered just over 23,000 miles.

So the time had come to replace them.

There is such a lot of choice out there but bearing in mind that tyres are the only thing between the motorist and the road it makes sense not to skimp.

I have tried this in the past, with one particular set of tyres I purchased for my

Mazda Xedos not even lasting for 12,000 miles, which was really disappointing.

The garage claimed that as it was a sporty saloon thanks to its 2-litre V6 engine coupled with the fact it was front wheel drive that this accounted for the excessive tyre wear. I wasn’t so convinced, though.

According to research from Michelin, 65% of European motorists use summer tyres all year.

I was none the wiser about this either.

Michelin, which was established in 1889, has launched CrossClimate, the first summer tyre with winter certification, which means it can be used in countries where fitting winter tyres

is a legal requirement.

It brakes in short distances on dry ground and has the highest European label rating of “A” for wet braking.

This sounded like a sensible option for my wife’s car because we haven’t got the time to be changing tyres twice a year nor have we the storage for four tyres.

Until now it has been thought that summer and winter tyre technology was incompatible.

The CrossClimate dispels this myth.

Its tread area is extremely supple and increases the ability of the compound to adhere to the slightest roughness of the road surface under all conditions (dry, wet, and snow).

A new material beneath the tread optimises the energy efficiency of the tyre by reducing heat generation.

Michelin’s engineers have reduced this heat build-up by introducing the latest-generation silica into the rubber mix – thus improving the fuel efficiency of the CrossClimate.

There is a noticeable difference when driving with a new set of tyres, not least the fact that they grip the road far better.

I am now confident that my wife is as safe as she can be on the road no matter what the weather might throw at her.

South Liverpool’s youth team who clinched the league title after their final day 3-1 win over main rivals Mossley Hill.

THE West Cheshire league’s annual general meeting earlier this month showed how successful South Liverpool FC have been through the 201718 season when they were presented with the George Law Trophy, which is annually given

to the club of the season – the third time that the club have received this in the last seven years.

The first team won the West Cheshire League first division for the third time in four seasons, finishing thirteen points ahead of their nearest rivals.

The reserves finished a

highly creditable sixth in the second division having been in contention for a top two position until the final weeks.

Leading scorer David Mee won the award for most Man of the Match votes in the whole league as well as the divisional award.

The youth team retained

hockey players from any club, you simply pay to play.

Sessions cost £3 per person, bibs for teams will be provided on the night.

We’ve also started running beginner sessions called Back to Hockey.

Back to Hockey is ideal for anyone who’s considering trying hockey; you can come and have a go in a fun and friendly environment.

We’ve seen a wide range of people from those who never had the opportunity to learn the game to people who haven’t played for 30 years.

We often hear people say how they wish hockey was played in summer when it’s a bit warmer; well someone got their wish this year!

We’ve had some glorious weather for the mixed sessions at Liverpool College on Tuesday nights.

The turnouts have been fantastic so far and we’ve seen some thrilling games and some exciting hockey.

Record breakers ‘Croft finish on a double

BACK to back victories against closest rivals AFC Kirkby saw Stoneycroft crowned as champions of the I-Zingari League.

After a lacklustre performance, but still good enough for them seal a comfortable victory in the last game of the league season, they secured their place firmly at the top of the table bringing to a climax what has been a record breaking season.

Scintillating examples of the beautiful game coupled with clinical finishing from the league’s top marksmen saw them smash the previous record for most goals scored in a season. Delighted boss Paddy McBride paid tribute to his players declaring “They have been outstanding all season”. He went on to say “We’ve got a great bunch of lads here and we’ve got all the potential to go on to further and better things”.

Paddy’s side have not only broken the league’s records but also broke a club record; not since the 1969 side won the second division title, dropping just one point, have Stoneycroft been amongst the honours and to do it in such style has enthused everybody associated with the Maiden Lane based outfit. Smiles are back on supporters’ faces as they revel in the club’s success.

Having bagged the championship they turned their sights on the cup. Next up was

a final tie against Runcorn at the Liverpool County FA ground at Walton Hall Park. Victory in that game would see them complete the double, something no previous Stoneycroft side had achieved.

“We’re not taking anything for granted but I feel a Cup and League Double would be a fitting reward for the players’ efforts.

They have been fantastic” Paddy McBride said before the final.

And he was proved correct as his players went out and destroyed the opposition. The ageing Runcorn side could not match the League Champions for skill or energy as they were overrun by a Stoneycroft side determined to continue with their history making. The game ended 4-0 for the Croft to clinch the double for the first time ever. A remarkable feat and an understandably jubilant group celebrated well into the night. It’s been a tremendous season made even better when you consider the trials and tribulations suffered by the club over recent years.

All at the club can only hope it’s the beginning of brighter things to come. Stoneycroft win the Double – now that is history. Meanwhile, Stoneycroft Under-18s were pipped at the post on the final day of the season and finished runners up in the County FA Premier Youth League. The youngsters have been in good form and have shown great promise

Successful tour for West Derby Hockey Men

FOLLOWING a turbulent season a team from the men’s section entered into the annual tour at Formby Hockey Club.

With an opening match win the men strung together a great tournament, beating teams from several leagues higher in the process.

The tournament boiled down to a penalty flick shootout for a spot in the plate final which saw the men edge out tournament favourites The FOG (Formby Veterans) after the heroics of goalkeeper Will Gregg.

The final was a cagey affair which eventually ended in a 1-0 win to West Derby following a

cool reverse stick finish from club Vice Chairman Joe O’Riley.

Over the past few weeks the club has been involved in a busy summer programme including the annual Timperley Hockey Club Men’s tournament which saw West Derby finish as semi-finalists though some would argue they were robbed of a spot in the final after some controversial umpiring decisions!

Overall the mood within the club is good and positive and with a busy summer ahead we hope to be in a very strong position for the coming season – be sure to pick up next month’s copy to stay up to date with our summer league progress!
