THE First World War had been raging for nine months but life was little affected at home, away from the bloodbath of the trenches in France. It was May 1915 and the UHDOLWLHV RI FRQĂ LFW ZHUH EHLQJ brought home to increasing numbers of people. On 7 May the luxury liner Lusitania was sunk by a German submarine as she headed for Liverpool. As battles raged, Britain was counting the cost of the war – ÂŁ2.1 million a day. Politician David Lloyd George described Britain’s three main enemies as “Germany, Austria and Drinkâ€?. German Zeppelin airships FDUULHG RXW WKHLU Ă€UVW DLU UDLGV DQG several people were killed. Whit Monday 24 May was a Bank Holiday and people took outings as usual. In those days this usually meant seaside trips or long walks. An unsigned postcard, showing West Derby Courthouse in the Village, commemorates the Bank Holiday which was memorable for the correspondent. They may have bought the card at the shop and tea rooms to the left of the Courthouse, which held its last sitting in 1910. . In those days vans were

nice cool breeze.� From this description, the correspondent lived in the Sefton Park area. They took the bus to Long Lane in Wavertree before walking to auntie’s. The boulevard refers to newly-built Queens Drive and the aviary was in Sefton Park.
